Russia Deploys Tactical Drones In The Arctic, Exposes Rarely-Seen US Spy Satellite Images

Tyler Durden's picture

While the USA is busy killing US civilians and terrorists with its drone program, Russia is set to deploy its own Orlan-10 drones in the oil- and gas-rich Arctic region (reportedly to monitor the climate situation). As SputnikNews reports, Colonel Aleksandr Gordeev stated "the drones' task is to maintain impartial control of the situation in the Russian sector of the Arctic, including the ecological and ice situation in the adjoining sea areas and along the Northern Sea Route." So, passive-agressive? However, Russia also chose this week to release rarely-seen images of a US intelligence satellite which as one analyst notes is provocative (but obscure in its intent other than the growing recognition of US space-based surveillance assets).

As Sputnik News reports, Russian drones will be deployed in the Arctic and along the Northern Sea Route starting May 1 to monitor the climate situation and the deterioration of Arctic ice, as well as to aid in navigation and search and rescue missions.

The drones — Orlan-10s from the Eastern Military District — will be deployed from the Chukotka Peninsula, which lies just opposite Alaska's Seward Peninsula.

The drone unit's mission will be "managing objective control over the situation in the Russian Arctic," added Gordeev. The UAVs will be delivered via heavy Mi-26 transport helicopters, and the station will be manned by graduates of the Defence Ministry’s remote control aviation center.

...

The announcement of the creation of the drone unit near the city of Anadyr in November came a few months after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the establishment of a separate public body responsible for the implementation of Russian policies in the Arctic and a unified network of naval facilities to host advanced warships and submarines to boost the protection of Russia's interests and borders in the area.

Russia is looking to build up its presence in the oil- and gas-rich Arctic region in accordance with the country's revised military doctrine, signed by President Vladimir Putin in December 2014.

But that was not all that Russia was up to this week... As The Federation of American Scientists reports, a Russian satellite tracking facility in Siberia has produced rarely-seen photographs of a U.S. intelligence satellite.

The U.S. LACROSSE radar satellite was captured in images generated at Russia’s Altay Optical Laser Center (profiled here), apparently between 2005 and 2010.

A selection of images was compiled and analyzed by Allen Thomson.

The images contain enough information (range, angular scale) to perform a bit of technical intelligence (i.e., sophomore high school trigonometry) on the radar antenna size, which is a significant parameter affecting capability,” Mr. Thomson, a former CIA analyst, told Secrecy News.

While provocative, the intent of the imagery disclosure was obscure, he said.

“Why did the Russians release the images?  The US is highly paranoid about releasing resolved images of spysats, ours or others. The Russian paranoia is at least as great, so how did these images get out? What was the purpose?”

The images themselves seem to be mostly just a curiosity. But perhaps they underscore the growing visibility and the corresponding vulnerability of U.S. space-based assets.

“Our asymmetrical advantage in space also creates asymmetrical vulnerabilities,” said Gil Klinger, a defense intelligence official, last year. “Our adversaries recognize our dependence on space and continue to think of ways to respond to our space advantage.”

He testified at a 2014 House Armed Services Committee hearing on U.S. national security space activities, the record of which has recently been published. Space protection, orbital debris, the industrial base and related topics were addressed.

*  *  *

It appears the Russians have been busy.

But one thing did jump out whewn gazing at the space images...

coincidence?

Let's have some fun with this.

12.5' Dish operating in the UHF bands for interception of microwave tower OTH (Over the Horizon) scatter transmissions...  Most likely close to 130 db of gain.

The appendage arm is the rebroadcaster for downlink of the information.

The *interesting* part is it has no solar panels. Can you spell N-U-C-L-E-A-R powered!!

Clearly this is my guess some form of Keyhole Satellite under NSA control.  One crashed in Peru back in 2007 with it's PU-238 Nuclear Core.

"Russian Military Intelligence Analysts are reporting today that one of the United States most secretive spy satellites, the KH-13, targeting Iran was 'destroyed in its orbit' with its main power generator powered by the radioactive isotope Pu-238 surviving re-entry and crashing in a remote region of the South American Nation of Peru, and where hundreds are reported to be ill from radiation poisoning."

It was destroyed in orbit but it's main body made a 30 foot crater in the earth (these bitches are heavy)

If there is something you know that we do not - the S-500 maximum altitude according to wikipedia is about 185 km, A low earth satellite starts at 160 and goes to 3000 km and most likely these Keyhole satellites are well outside the range of the S-500 system.

The thing that is fascinating I guess is the US is (according to public record) *out* out Plutonium-238 and unable to make any more nuclear batteries or can only make 2 more.  The thing I suspect about the 2007 Keyhole accident is did the Russian deliberately fire a powerful microwave signal to the satellite to deliberately cause it's battery core to overheat and explode?

I don't know Hobby People, but most modern fixed-wing models will likely work at -50 just fine: polystyrene construction with an ARM Cortex MCU to heat the interior. The 80km range, high winds, icing, and ANAV near a magnetic pole are bigger problems. Not unworkable, but still problems unaddressed by temperate zone flight systems.

True, but Nuclear power satellites are visible 24/7 to radiologal telescopes -- They actually glow and ruin the observation of the background radiation which can be extremely faint. Anyone who wants to can find a nuclear satellite -- even the newest spy ones. It has been that way from the 1960s. It is not a secret.

Considering that the typical parabolic reflector has 50-65 dB of gain, 130 would be impressive as hell. But you do know that without very advance DSP algos most of that gain would be wasted as the signals would be buried in kTB noise, far below what CDMA does terrestrially.

Which suggests to me advanced signal processiing long before it started to show up with consumers, which is not surprising.

Pure Bullsh!t.

Your numbers are off, WAY off.

The S-band WSR-88D NEXRAD S-band RADAR uses a center-feed, parabolic dish. Size (dia.) is 9 meters (28 ft.), beam width of 0.95 deg and a gain of 45.5 dB

At UHF (500 MHz) the gain would be LESS than 45 dB.

If Putin wants to engage in some asymetrical warfare, he can cause a lot of damage to the Anglo part of the Zionist Oligarchy by convincing the Argies to retake the Malvinas.

It took Thatcher months to mount a counter attack back in the 1980s and UK's is spending a *lot* less on defense these days - they would probably NOT be able to take the Malvinas back - this would blow a huge hole in the UK's reputation and expose them for the weak, rabid US Zionist lapdogs that they are...

Good in theory but there is a problem.

If Argentina took the Falkland Islands, which were never part of Argentina and whose population have voted overwhelmingly to remain part of the UK (hey, just like Crimea and Russia), the UK no longer has the naval ability to retake.  The problem is taking them now.

The UK didn't have troops stationed there previously so Argentina had an unopposed invasion and then the UK had to mount an invasion from the other side of the globe to retake.  And there was no expectation of Argentina attempting an invasion.

The UK now has troops stationed there and ability to augment quickly (since basically just infantry / special forces, no tanks, etc needed).  They are also alert to the possibility of an Argentinian invasion.

So Putin could try convincing Argentina to retake the Falkland Islands but it won't happen.  Putin is realistic about what he does.  He will concentrate on winners, not losers.

And Argentina's population is largely descended from immigrants.

After Britain retook the Falklands.  It was almost unanimous, stronger even than the Crimea.  And why would you expect it to be any different?  The Falklands were populated from the UK, not the mix of ethnic groups that populated Argentina (which of course is NOT ruled by native Indians).  Indeed the Falklands were colonised by Britain before Argentina came into existence as a discrete country.  They speak English, not Spanish.

In addition the Falklands are about 500 kms to the nearest point in Argentina, well outside what anyone recognises as a national maritime zone.

I always thought it a good idea for earthlings to put up satellites filled with tons of BBs that travel around the earth within opposite directions of all orbiting satellites so that they could expand the BBs out slowly across all satellite flight paths at a speed of around 38,000 MPH. Years ago I read that the gas has to be refrigerated to a very low temperature to make it become liquid. And the energy needed to do this consumed half the gas. Then it has to be transported, using more energy. And the LNG ships are absurdly dangerous when they are near shore (the mothers of all fuel-air weapons) and can take out cities.

Also, with most of the US west of the Rockies completely running out of water, we are going to ruin most of the fresh water in the East and Midwest by fracking the ground.

All so that we can irritate the Russians. And Russia really does not need Europe at all. (I think Europe is going to be toast anyway.)

But we will have to guzzle down gray water while Putin enjoys nice clear fresh water. We will show him!

Total disregard for the environment is pathetic. You make a good point about the Russians probably being atrocious.

Perhaps you were logging after the lumber industry quit logging practices that silted up the streams and decimated the California salmon fisheries, if not you should not be so proud.

bully for you dipshit. did you replace it with 'new-growth' or just steal it from 'your' forests.

your oceans? lmao

you've been voted down because too many of those old growth trees fell on your thick head.

What is more effective at doing what trees do, an old tree that is fairly static or new growth that is growing and processing more?  Cutting old growth to make room for new growth is actually more effective.

Facts, they suck nuts don't they?

BBC: Russia explores old nuclear waste dumps in Arctic

"Besides K-27, official figures show that the Soviet military dumped a huge quantity of nuclear waste in the Kara Sea: 17,000 containers and 19 vessels with radioactive waste, as well as 14 nuclear reactors, five of which contain hazardous spent fuel. Low-level liquid waste was simply poured into the sea."

Global warming is nothing more than a head game.....

This idea that the people in the USA can change the universe is nothing more than a very arrogant concept dreamed up by the elite to try to take the rest of our savings/ property from us in the 99.9%

They can fuk off......

We know better and can in time kick their asses............

I hope.

America (& west) relies too much on its satellites.

Kill the American military & GPS satellites.

America will become just like a third world country.

Easy to invade.

I think Russians should keep ready one anti-satellile missile (or 2) for each of the American satellite, and in the difficult times, kill them , blinded, then nuking America would be much easier.

Why invade, when the US is already taking itself back into the Stone Age by non maintaining infrastructure?

WTF would ever want to invade the USA now? It's got absolutely nothing to offer. Just tens of millions of grossly overweight brain-dead zombies, its natural resources pretty much sucked dry and an infrastructure falling into complete disrepair.

But look at Russia... huge tracts of land becoming more valuable by the day if the global warming story is even half true. Mountains of resources just waiting for the taking to be shared out by a comparitively smaller population.

I can see who really wants to take someone elses property in this case without question.

Perhaps in the Chinese Space Station,Tiangong, there is a 17,000 mph scooter that can spin around and about the LEO.

And on this Space golf cart there is manually operated and very long pogo like stick.

And a couple of Sinonauts can wizz around the ring of the world's satellites and punch the American communication and GPS satellites into bootless orbits.

Almost 50 years after being mooned, there are still some that "believe" that Mercans "landed" on the moon (no pun intended) USing fred flintstone technology, cruised in a "moon" buggy, shot a round of golf, had lunch, blasted off in a tinfoil covered tin can and got back to Earth in time to watch Archie Bunker. The Russian "tactical" drones look like toy RC aircraft I can build with bits from Hobbyking or something like that. Russia have a lot more sophisticated UAVs than the Orlan-10. I would say it's a pretty mild reconnaissance mission.

China will blockade Taiwan

The US will send their ships.

Then Russia will strike the fatal blow to the US from the North.

Dumitru Duduman vision 1995

Shortly after that vision Yeltsin and the president of China met and declared that the US should not be the world leader.

Then China did blockade Taiwan with ships and the US responded

It was a test run which also verified the above vision

It will happen in due time.

After the US shot down one of our own failing satellites the Chinese responded by shooting down one of theirs. If Bill Clinton hadn't gave them the guidance chip tech they could not have done this. I hope the Clinton's enjoyed the campaign contributions. The X-37B is scheduled to go back up next month. If the US actually put the "Thor's Hammer" satellite up with those tungsten steel "God Rods" in them I would want to take them down quick if I were opposing the US. A totally kinetic weapon that can't be defeated after launch is scary shit. Who knows what kind of Star Wars type shit the US has up there. I do know a guy who helped in making DU pellets that could presumably be shot in space. Not unlike the DU rounds made for use on the ground. I love America but hate our government. At least Putin cares for his country. Our HNIC doesn't give a shit about ours.
