Track The Real-Time Position Of Ship Which Pentagon Says Was Seized By Iran

Tyler Durden's picture

Following initial confusion about which ship was shot at, seized and confiscated by Iran, with Arabiya and Farsnews reporting it was a US ship with 34 soldiers on board, while the Pentagon subsequently stating there were no US personnel on the cargo ship which was a Marshall Island-flagged cargo vessel, the Maersk Tigris, the situation still remains fluid, especially considering the latest news out of the Pentagon:

  • U.S. SENT DESTROYER AND AIRCRAFT TO MONITOR SHIP, WARREN SAYS

But why if it isn't a US ship? And how will Iran react when the US naval "cavalry" arrives in its territorial waters?

Some more news on the ship in question: according to Bloomberg, the Maersk Tigris cargo vessel was in international waters when taken by Iranian navy, Cor Radings, external spokesman for Rickmers Ship Management, says by phone. Rickmers is manager of vessel. 24 crew on board ship; not known why vessel was taken. Rickmers trying to re-establish contact with vessel.

Meanwhile, those curious can track the confiscated Tigris, in real time courtesy of Marine Traffic (link). One thing is clear: there are no US cargo ships anywhere in the vicinity of the Tigris...

... although there may be some military ones soon. That's a different story.

As for this being "only" a Marshall Islands ship, a good question was asked moments ago:

My friend used to fly helicopters off of "merchant" ships under other country's flags to do Navy Seal drops for a few years.  Just because its a merchant ship under a different country's flag does not mean it doesn't have US soldiers on it.  Mind you most merchant ships are just merchant ships.

The Iranian leadership knows Obama won't do a damn thing.  Obama is so against any military action he is willing to give away 'the store' while negotiating the nuclear deal with Iran...even as the Iranian leadership says death to the USA, tells the world that US blacks are in worse shape than ever even though there president is black and now the shipping incident.  After telling Bashir al Assad not to cross a red line and then backing down after Assad crossed that line, Obama has shown the world he is impotent.  I agree with Obama that everthing must be done diplomatically to achieve a peaceful resolution, but in life when a bad person you are confronted by threatens you, your family, and then spits on you while grabbing one of your family members, well you stop 'pleading' with that person and kick his ass good and sound so he doesn't pop off again.  ALl of Obama's actions are leading to an emboldened enemy and in the end when the threat confronts us at home the mess that will need to be cleaned up will be way worse than cleaning it up now.  Time to spank the bad kid and make him sit in the corner with a dunce cap on.

Two Qatari and 6 Turkish officers were killed in a commando style raid by an elite Syrian Army special forces unit.  These officers were commanding al Nusra units that entered Syria in the past 8 hours from Turkey.  In addition to the Qatari and Turkish officers, two dozen senior al Nusra military and political officers were killed, the core of their command structure.

So much for 34 Anericans on board the ship:

The Iranian Navy has reportedly seized a US ship with 34 crew members on board, for violating Iran's waters in the Persian Gulf. An Iranian warship is taking the vessel to the city of Bandar Abbas, Fars and Al Arabiya report.

A Pentagon spokesman has confirmed that Iranian forces have boarded the Marshall Island-flagged Maersk Tigris vessel, Reuters reports.

The ship had no US citizens on board and was traveling through the Strait of Hormuz when it was seized, the spokesman said, adding that US planes and the USS Farragut responded to a distress call from the vessel and are monitoring the situation.

The Dear Leader has an entire congregation of true believers with not a single properly functioning brain cell among the lot of them.  They apparently dragged out Jefferson's copy of the Koran and passed it around like some sort of magic Talisman to sanctify their lies or idiocy.  If owning a copy of the Koran was proof of anything (other than perhaps trying to know one's enemy in this case) --I think Hugues de Payens probably also owned a copy of the Koran, he was certainly more likely than Jefferson to have actually held an Iftar, in the downtime between bouts of killing Mohammedans.

Son, hate to break it to you, but modern texts have been "dummied down".   My nephew's American History text was over 400 pages, when I looked at how it covered the Spanish American war, it got one long paragraph.   I kid you not.  No mention of The Maine, our preemptive surprise attacks on Spanish fleets, how we "kept" the Philippines after "liberating" them, yet how we never got around to supposed primary cause of the war which was "liberating" Cuba.   No mention of Nimitz's findings that the ship explosion at the start of the war was likely self inflicted.   Disgraceful then, just as disgraceful how we gloss over it now.

The key to our history of "bombing Libya" is to understand that Regan was the 2nd President to do so.  Thomas Jefferson was the first, authorizing shelling of a few shoreline cities from our fledgling navy as retaliation for hosting pirates.  Since Regan, I've sort of lost count of how many times the US has attacked Libya (only 10 fingers for counting).

US Owned vs Ships registry is a huge difference.

US owned commercial vessels are registered outside of US to avoid-circumvent US jurisdiction-laws-taxes and liabilities. Most US owned ships are registered in a foreign country and are called: Foreign flag or pirate flag ships. Greece, Panama, Honduras, Liberia are typical foreign flag registry countries.

All US registered merchant vessels, must have at least 80% of it's crews menbers to be US citizens, ship and crew fall under the command of:

The US federal government, it maintains fleets of merchant ships via organizations such as Military Sealift Command and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. In 2004, the federal government employed approximately 5% of all American water transportation workers.[4]

According to Farsnews (Iranian):

"The ship is a trade vessel and has been seized by the Iranian navy at the request of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization," the source told FNA on Tuesday.

"The ship was seized after a relevant court order was issued for its confiscation," he added, indicating that the the IPMO had monetary differences with the ship owner.

I can't speak to the legitimacy of the claim, but Iran isn't going to care to stir up any shit right in the middle of the nuke talks. It may have been a legitimate seizure if the ship owed the port authority money, even if the ship was in international waters. Still, odd timing considering the risk to Iran and the end of sanctions - they wouldn't do it as a simple provocation.

Maybe there was something especially interesting on board that either Saudi Arabia, the U.S. or the UAE would rather not have the world know about? One of the stolen Pantex nuclear pits, some hungry fruit bats or 50 tons of VX would be particularly embarassing for the offenders and probably help Iran at the talks.

Nice link to the marine traffic site that makes it easy to track the vessel's history. Between 08:09 and 09:00 UTC this morning (About 9-10 hours ago), the vessel did a sharp turn towards the Iranian island of Qeshm and headed straight for it in the opposite direction of its declared destination, the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai.

According to defensenews.com, the vessel was intercepted by the Iranians around 5am Washington time (12:00 UTC). At that time, it was steaming North-West directly towards Iran, fairly deep in Iranian waters off the coast of Qeshm having made two course changes, 5 degrees at 08:09 UTC and 304 degrees at 11:18 UTC. Both course changes in the opposite direction to its destination port of Jebel Ali.

Tracking history of Maersk Tigris

So, the MSM "facts" that it is a US container ship is false, that Americans are on board is false, that it was in international waters heading away from Iran is false. In fact, there does not appear to be anything truthful about this weird incident.

From the same Farsnews article above:

An Iranian warship is now taking the American vessel to Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.

So the track history seems consistent with Iran eventually stopping and seizing the vessel, then taking it to Bandar Abbas. This, after the odd turn towards Iran. The turn towards Iran was almost the same direction as the surface winds (not into but with the wind). There's no known nuke stuff that direction in Iran - it's all much further north.

Were you on your fairy wings when you observed the Iranians fire at the bridge?   As of now all are reporting that it was a shot across the freighters bow.  Which is to say "you are in our territorial waters and so you better make for our port so we can see if you are carrying contraband or weapons. Happens all the time but when the West does it, it doesn't even get a mention in People Magazine.

  1. Territorial waters are like national airspace.  And you must know how often Nato planes intercepted Russian planes that weren't flying in NATO airspace, BUT WERE FLYING TOO CLOSE TO NATO AIRSPACE

Just more double standard, baby boy.
