In my opinion, the root cause is the growth and impact of government entitlement systems (almost all of them) that have been the major factor in the breakdown of the family and the requirement that people take care of themseleves.

Rly? In that case the state is the biggest drug dealer there is, tobacco, alcohol, prescription drugs you name it. And about drugs destroy people's lives, i don't think its the drugs but the barriers of entry into the market that drive the price of drugs so high and in conjunction with the addictiveness of some of these drugs that destroy people's lives.
