Massive Forest Fire Heads Toward Chernobyl
Have you ever wondered what would happen if a raging forest fire swept across an area severely contaminated by radioactive waste? We can't say that we have either, but we may be about to find out because there are around 400 hectares of woodland on fire in the exclusion zone around Chernobyl. While the Ukrainian government claims the fire is "contained," some say the mass burning of plants which may have absorbed significant levels of contaminants over the nearly three decades since the Chernobyl nuclear accident has the potential to "resuspend" harmful agents in the surrounding air. Here's ecologist Christopher Busby who spoke to RT:
And here's Reuters with the "official" word from Ukraine:
Ukrainian fire fighters have contained a large forest fire that threatened to spread toward the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power plant and radiation levels in the area are normal, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Wednesday.
The blaze in woodlands, parts of which are still contaminated by radioactive particles from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, had raised fears of increased radiation as high winds pushed it toward the plant about 20 km (12 miles) away.
Yatseniuk, speaking at a government meeting, said: "As of 1245 (05:45 EDT) the fires has been localized and contained. The radiation levels are normal."
And more from BBC:
Mr Avakov said authorities suspected the fire was started deliberately and had tightened security around the exclusion zone.
A state nuclear inspection official told AFP that the level of background radiation around the plant had not changed after the fire broke out.
A fire raged at the plant for 10 days after the reactor meltdown 1986, sending huge amounts of radioactive material into the surrounding environment and over large parts of Europe, particularly Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
The area around the plant was evacuated and a 30km (19 mile) exclusion zone remains in place to this day. Work on laying a new seal over the damaged reactor began in 2007 and is due to be completed this year.

Because sometimes a black swan just isn't black enough on its own...
contained....boy that word has been getting a lot of use since the second depression started.
I have a sneaking suspicion that at some point it will be used a lot to decribe people and fema camps....
I can hear the CNN headlines now.
See....It Was NOT Fukushima....it was Chernobyl.
HAARP, isnt that what angels play?
Buy Moar GE Stock.
RIPS
Appears they are getting PR advice from TEPCO
its putins fault.
A fire, lol, not much damage that can do now. The place had a freaking reactor meltdown already.
From what I understand, much of the biomass at and around the npp doesn't decay into soil properly. In effect, its burning nearly three decades of bio accumulation. Pretty neat!
Correct. G.E. designed these reactors so perfectly they exited the entire industry. Something about the corporate veil/soveriegn immunity. They still needed a challenge so they pretty much just write tax code now a days. It was not hard to get a lawyer to defend the revision of the articles of incorporation. When they went into court, the bumblefunk judge and states attorney had to bow down and lick boots. Every tax LLM is a JD but not all JDs are LLMs. LLM tax is the highest credential possible in the western world.
/semi-sarc
Most LLMs couldn't tell you anything about tax if you held a gun to their heads. Further, they'll pass responsibility to the client's tax return preparer for any tax issues. While there are a few that are the top tax professionals in the world, most are complete idiots. As between CPAs and LLMs, I'll take someone who actually prepares returns on a daily basis to someone who had a few additional tax courses following a JD (which is often preceded by an english/political science degree).

Mission is accomplished.

Oh my goodness, surely it was just an accident **Wisconsin voice**

HAARP wave inadvertantly reflected off of drifting contrails and teleported a Baltimore Social Justice Protestor, who, understandably confused, tossed his MoTov anyways and caused this.

400 hectares isn't what I'd consider massive...
Still, I wouldn't want to go fight the thing. The smoke we have to breathe fighting "normal" wildland fires are bad enough, with out the Chernobyl extras.
400Ha is less than 1000 acres.
It ain't like the (soon to be) burning Vallies of Cali.
Hell, I know peeps that farm that before breakfast.
Still a controlled burn after 30 years of accumulation to reestablish a duff layer, would be prudent.
Prolly clear some land mines too.
Well, fire can melt steel framed skyscrapers, why can't it fuse radioactive isotopes?
Or do you have to add Jet Fuel?
pods
I think you must add Silverstein
You gotta wreck a few airliners into a radioactive forest fire for best results.
there is some hard humor here
no punchs pulled...
+1
It only works if you blame an innocent country
A little radiation in your morning coffee aint gonna hurt no one lol
There already is radiation in your cup of coffee and in the cup itself. Isn't anything on the planet that isn't radioactive, including Tyler.
Yup, looks contained.
Just like the situation in the East of Ukraine is contained.
Chernobyl, that's were that hamsandwich making fox lives, right? What's the big deal?
Anyone see that Chernobyl Diaries flick from a few years ago? A disastrous mess befitting for a disaster.
I wood not breath if I lived there...
Death'll do that.
ROFL! Cures that o2 addiction Every Time :)

Fire is the coverup of choice when evidence needs to be disappeared
Not to be a bore, but I think they might be A LITTLE FUCKING LATE WITH THIS ONE.
This is the end, my only friend, the end.
Dump cement on the fire .... from helicopters .... with all the finese of Kruschev .... bangin' his shoe on the UN podium .... all the style of shooting down .... civilian airliners .... fucking Socialist brutes !
Conspiracy alert! - Dirty bomb? All that nuclear energy locked up in the biomass. Just need a good strong prevailing wind towards Russia and/or rebel strongholds. Of course, some loyalists will be in the path, just a small matter to an Oligarch....

400 hectares about 800 acres, 1 section which is 1 square mile is 640 acres, not that big a fire.
very dinky
toasting marshmallows
over a nuclear camp fire...
I saw a TV show on Chernoble X years after and one of the takeaways was that there are no micro organisms that break down vegetation into soil..So for all the years all the leaves etc that dropped to the forest floor none has been decomposed, its all sitting there dried out and very flammable as well as very irradiated....Good luck to all down wind...We be fucked.

Oh so that's how (w all our other nuclear issues also) as the predictive bot was saying nuclear gets airborne and does odd things not only like pacific evaporation.. But here too.
Does odd shit... Plants and stuff...... Weather and unexplainable things.
400 hectares Is a quote from the official Junta government
10,000 hectares Is an official Russian government assessment
Since Russia was the FIRST source to announce this fire, and went public, the Junta in Kiev responded hours later with their tiny figure.
Yes, and some zombified Ukrainians cheered about the forest fires in Siberia. Anyways, I hope this ends soon. Everyone near Ukraine is already sick and tired of it.
Thought I was looking at photos from a forest fire in California.
California is a tinder box.
If Ukraine weren't permanently broke, they could "phytoremedy" the Zone by cutting down all its vegetation and burning it in incinerators that emit only water and CO2. They could then do likewise with a few crops of goosefoot or milkweed; these fast-growing weeds are especially good at soaking up cesium-137 and strontium-90, the only isotopes that are still dangerous three decades after a nuclear accident.
Now why would he CIA light this up?
It depends where the fire is coming from.
If it's from the east, then it's relatively harmless, since on the night of the accident, wind was blowing in the northwestern direction, so it carried the fallout from the plant on the nearby town of Pripyat and further northwest into Belarus.
If the fire is to the west of Chernobyl, then they're fucked, it's gonna release all the radioisotopes into the air again.
BTW, in 2016 it's gonna be 30 years since the accident.
RBMK-1000 is one unsafe son of a bitch, it is large physically, so under certain conditions parts of it become uncontrollable even though the control rods are in.
There are several books written on that topic, some of them in Russian, but I haven't read them.
Actually, the same type of reactor was involved in an accident in Leningrad Nuclear Power Station in 1975.
I can't trust what that little rat-faced Ukrainian scientologist Yatsenfuck has to say about anything. If the Ukies breathe this smoke in, will they die or get even dumber than they are now?
I'm reminded of Roy Scheider in the movie 52 Pick-up:
"Something about your face makes me wanna slap the shit out of it."
Readings in the Red Forest are particularly high, even as compared to ground zero - the forests got the biggest dose.
Earth is beginning to feel somewhat scorched.
