Well That Hasn't Happened Before - Exhibit 5

Tyler Durden's picture

We have never, ever, seen more trades per second in stocks than at the peak of yesterday's post-FOMC reaction...

One glance at this chart shows the 'arms war' under way in the so-called markets - this frequency of trading is 10 times higher than 2010 averages... and just keeps getting higher.

This burst of high-frequency-trading - 864,000 trades per second - coincided with the short-term top post-FOMC as the machines "gave it all they could, Cap'n" to prove The Fed has a bloody clue what it is doing now...

It appears the 'oomph;' of HFT is running out of gas.

I just squared-up all my trades.

I'm staying flat, and watching the markets. The European situation, and the BoJ save during late N.Y. have me spooked.

I'm sure you've enjoyed banking all those Bernanke bux over the last 5+ years.

 You're probably a neurosurgeon?

Covering a trade, is going flat "the position".

Squaring-Up a trade is covering the "entire" position.

 Have a nice day :-D

Was not being sarcastic Yen, was being serious, have followed your posts and don't think you have ever mentioned being spooked. No I'm just a hack programmer, family man, barely making it pay check to pay check in this great economy. Have not had any "position" since I had to cash out my 401ks.

Someone who is more knowledgable than I am should calculate how much revenue would be generated per period of time if a 1/100th of one cent tax was levied on each trade; awww to hell with that, Virtu and their likes shouldn't have to bear such an onerous burden.

At 864k trades per second at a 1/100th cent tax per trade you would generate $7,464,000 per day in revenue or $2.7 billion per year.

Absolute pocket change, not even a rounding error compared to the amount of money HFT brings in to firms like Virtu.

I say make it one cent per trade to bring in $2.7 trillion. Still pocket change compared to what the central banks have given to the tradesters over the past six years.

Or what about just not allowing it in the first place? Just how muddled in the head are you to think that outright theft should be a source of tax revenue?
