Charlie Munger Compares Greece To a "Frivolous, Drunken Brother-In-Law"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having previously effused over gold and holocaust jews, bailouts, and handouts, Buffett & Munger took aim at Europe, well more implicitly Greece, during today's annual octagenerian-fest.

  • Munger on Euro strains: You shouldn't create a partnership with your drunken, shiftless brother in law.
  • And Buffett's (implicit Grexit) retort: the euro can and probably should survive but it will take some changes...

As he previously said, Germany must stop Greek dog peeing on its rug.

Buffett added...

  • *BUFFETT SAYS EURO IN ITS PRESENT FORM WON'T WORK
  • *BUFFETT SAYS EURO IS FLAWED BUT CAN BE CORRECTED

With just a little hard austerity or Grexit?

*  *  *

And here are some previous pearls of wisdom to the plebes coutesy of Chuckie Munger:

Stop whining about bailouts: "Hit the economy with enough misery and enough disruption, destroy the currency, and God knows what happens," Munger said. "So I think when you have troubles like that you shouldn’t be bitching about a little bailout. You should have been thinking it should have been bigger."

Stop whining for moar handouts: "There's danger in just shoveling out money to people who say, 'My life is a little harder than it used to be...  At a certain place you’ve got to say to the people, ‘Suck it in and cope, buddy. Suck it in and cope.'"

Gold: "gold is a great thing to sew onto your garments if you're a Jewish family in Vienna in 1939 but civilized people don't buy gold - they invest in productive businesses."

*  *  *

So they are both well worth listening to, we are sure.. since they have so much money.

Guess I am not "civilized."

On an aside -- the Jews were sewing gold into their clothing because its the only wealth of theirs that hadn't already been confiscated or was too large to carry off (e.g., houses).

What savages.  /sarc

This is just another assault on currencies going on worldwide & Greece is definitely a perfect window of what is to come for many other nations..

The door closed for Jews in Austria in 1938 with the Anschluss.  It's not like the octogenarian oaf wasn't around at the time, so I'm not sure why he is spouting drivel about 1939

Prior to the door closing it was probably more efficient and safe to by US stocks and then arrange for some unfortunate Jewish lighting to burn the certificates.

But with either gold or equities the difficulty was often getting decent pricing on the assets that needed to be liquidated in a buyers' market. (Who was buying houses in Vienna after Louis Rothschild broke Creditanstalt and took a huge chunk of the European banking system along with it?)

Moral of the story- stack early and often, don't wait until the last minute, by then it's too late.

I guess Charlie munger is like the stupid uncle who gives his opinion when no one cares.  Europe foolishly supplied periphery nations with credit to steal GDP back to nothern European states and now they are shocked(!) and suprised(!) that these countries mathematically cannot pay it back.  Go figure.

Sorry but i have to reply,   I remember this puke, speaking in front of a college audience, and told them to "quit whining and take it" after the 2008 melt down.  Mean while he and his crummy toady warren were looting the u.s. treasury "for the greater good"

"It was an inside job,

by the well connected,

your trusted servants,

have left you unprotected"

Of course the Euro is flawed. Thats the way they purposely designed it in the first place to create the current crisis and force the formation of a budgetary union and subsequent defacto United States of Europe.

" They " may have been smart enough to form the EU but no group without paranormal powers could have actually planned and executed this mess. The European problem is a result of the old adage " the road to hell is paved with good intentions. "

The problems now plaguing the EZ were certainly known before it was even created. It was extensively debated in national parliaments and then ignored by the governments. The Zermans were especially worried but because integration into Europe was the price they accepted to pay for unification they went ahead with it anyway.

When 2 men who have dedicated their lives to feeding off the working class like a couple of blood sucking parasites speak, its best to listen to something else and hope they go away, like the boogeyman.

If Greece is pissing all over the rug, then surely Buffett has been taking massive dumps in peoples living rooms daily before serving them a foreclosure notice.

You know, at the start of the whole Euro scam, Germany was please as punch to be replacing Greece's crap currency with something that could buy German goods, and then happy to lend out the wazzo to their shiftless brother-in-law.   Only decades later, when the debt has piled to the sky in Greece (and the goods have been flowing out the door from Germany the whole time) does the impudence of their deadbeat partner suddenly seem to matter.

Hypocrisy of the highest order.  Shouldn't have borrowed, how about some "shouldn't have lent?"

Munger the misanthrope should be grateful that Greek political traitors did not pull the plug six years ago rather than taking the bailout which enslaved them. Had the Greeks pulled the plug Munger would have ended up on a street corner begging for alms. Come to think of it, it still might happen.

The drunks are called politicians and they are drinking to forget what happens when the day comes the taxes are finally due after decades of "No New Taxes" which got them elected.  The flim-flam men/women who should be selling snake oil but are running our financial institutions create the loans to cover their asses but only for so long.  Time the rich start paying some taxes and the banks to be dissolved and the banksters held accountable for irresponsible lending practices.

The only thing that the European Union leaders achieved with the vulgar attack against Prof. Dr. Yannis Varoufakis and his dictatorial replacement, was to make Yannis Varoufakis a hero in Greece. If elections were to be held at this present moment Yannis Varoufakis would have taken at least 70% of the votes. Not even President Obama when he was elected as President of the United States for the first time was so popular among the people like Yannis Varoufakis is in Greece today ! Just show me one of your politicians that can walk through an angry demonstration like Yannis is doing here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=32&v=JWVl-MPLl-M
