New Russian High-Tech Tank Suffers BSOD Moment During Army Parade

Tyler Durden's picture

Russia unveiled its new main battle tank as part of practices for Saturday's Victory Day parade (commemorating the end of WWII). According to RT, the Armata "is a cutting-edge vehicle with an unmanned turret armed with a brand new 125 mm smoothbore cannon, which is the most powerful gun of its kind to date in terms of muzzle energy." You decide...

Of course, the painful 40 seconds could be seen as an anology for The Fed's effort to revive The US Economy.

Not at all like the medals of exceptional honor, valor, and glory earned by US officers for such feats of bravery as rape in a "friendly" country or remote control wedding party extermination.

That is one strange universe really.

The Armata tank is probably not much behind a Leopard 2 tank. Except that the Leopard was designed in the 1970ies and the Armata is brand new.

When you're a nuclear power, you don't need to waste money on meaningless militia.  Just spit and polish on the red button is enough, after all what is a shiny new tank gonna do to your intercontinental ballistic missiles?

Now I'd be more worried about the 20kiloton nuclear suitcase bombs Russia has made, aka. RA-115 that have since coldwar, gone missing to a neighborhood near you...

Fist of all, Armata is not a tank. It's a platform. T-14 is tank. And Leopard 2 is behind T-14: tehnologically, in terms of armament, armor, manouverability, etc. Ammunition of Leopard 2 is made of tungsten and it cannot pierce even T-90 armor.

But the best part of T-14 is that its price is only half the price of Abrams and Leopard 2. You can get 2 T-14 for the price of 1 Abrams or Leoprad 2. And that means a lot. When you put things into context, probably the best tank today is Israeli Merkava, but you know what? Hezbollah took out 50 Merkavas in 2006 war probably using some older Russian anti-tank weapons. That is how "big a deal" tanks are in today's warfare. The time of tanks have passed.

A main battle tank is a combination of armor, speed and mobility and of huge fire power. Still what you want to have on a battlefield to win. Doesn´t mean tanks alone will decide who wins these days.

I agree but Armata is destined to be the first remote control, crewless, MBT, with some capable auto loading and targeting. If they can mass produce these, like the Reapers, what would you like, an overhead drone with Hellfire, or a tank that can fire a 125mm every few seconds and has SAM to deter drones? Not sure but, a tank might worry me more.

Some of us actually use electronics for more than twitstuff and fadebooking. I use a powerful, as opposed to your wimpy tablet, phablet, or smartyphone, desktop computer every single day at work and at home. Why is it that stupid humans (no offense Bellevue, as ALL humans are stoopid) seem to think that every other human thinks like they do. They do not. This pathetic human trait has a serious negative effect on many facets of our lives. It also spotlights one of our worst traits..........self absorption. Humans suck.

I don't twitshitt or faceblast either...So what's your point again? I'm telling you right here and right now that a battle tank is no longer needed in warfare. The next war will not be fought from the ground. To summarize, let's just say there's a generational difference between your stoopidness and mine.

This is the Microsoft windows blue screen moment, Russian new tank version, I knew this would happen.

The Armata brakes are full on, like any commerciaal vehicle brakes that fail safe; so recovery tank will not be able to pull it, only a crane onto a low-loader will do.

Space X seems to be doing just fine.

They killed the heavy booster comptetition.

I very much wanted to see a modern variant of the most powerful rocket booster ever...the F-1 (which now could be built even more powerfully as the F-1B).

No dice.

The SpaceX Falcon-heavy booster seems poised to make them irrelevant.

But, IMO, a Kerox booster is more logical.  And the F-1 is awesomely large and powerful.

The design doesn't have to be revolutionary if the methods used to make, maintain, and launch it make the price revolutionary.

The Auto Industry's hey-day was not built on luxuries, or technological marvels, but on solid capability at an everyman price.

The more Industry has cartelized and consolidated, the more this has been forgotten.

What do I need a technologically superior new design for, if the engineering goes, instead, into making an older design economical to operate?

I have eyes.  And I know what older Russian Tanks look like.  If you think this Armata is not more angular, then please post these photos next to T90's, T80's, T72s, T64's, T62s, etc.

It is more angular.  Even a blind man could see it.

And I can see the height of the tank's deck relative to the men standing next to it.

Post pictures of men standing next to older Russian tanks.  Their heads and chests are above the deck.  On the Armata, their heads are level with the deck.   There should be plenty of May-Day parades to compare to.

And I can read articles about transmission break-downs.  (It also happened during practice.)  You don't believe Channel 1?  RBK news? RT?

Engineers, can work out kinks.

The M1 is an old tank, already.  The creme of 1960's technology.  It would be no shame to be equaled by a tank 50 years newer.

Just went little browsing about T-14 specifications and this is the best description I've found:

The Armata is a new-generation tank. It has little in common with the current T-90. Exact technical specifications of this MBT remain classified.

It has been reported that this main battle tank is operated by a crew of only 2 men, including commander and driver. If it is true, so far it is the only MBT to have such a small crew. Older Russian tanks have a crew of 3. While most Western MBTs have a crew of 4. Reduction of the crew to just 2 men allowed to reduce crew compartment, overall the size of the vehicle and improve protection.

The Armata might be one of the most protected MBTs in the world. It has been reported that it has newly-developed armor, made of steel, ceramics and composite materials. Also it has been reported that Armata has a Malakhit add-on explosive reactive armor of new generation. As usual this MBT is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. It has been reported that Armata will be fitted with new Afganit active protection system. It seems that it also has a new countermeasures system that reduces the chance of being hit by enemy ATGW with semi-automatic guidance. This new Russian tank uses smoke grenade dischargers of new type.

It has been reported that crew members are seated in a well protected armored capsule. It is separated from automatic loader and ammunition. The tank has improved resistance to damage. It can fight even with penetrated armor, as far as the crew cell is intact.

It was reported that Armata wil be armed with a 2A82 125-mm smoothbore gun. It has improved ballistics comparing with a 2A46M gun of the T-90 MBT. The gun is mounted in unmanned turret and is completed with an autoloader. This tank will be capable of firing gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary rounds. These missiles have a range of about 5 km and can also target low-flying helicopters.

The Armata MBT is fitted with new fire control system. The tank has a hunter-killer capability. It is also equipped with a battlefield management system.

In addition, as I read on some other site, T-14 is the only tank today that has capability of surviving an encounter with the tanks' killers - helicopters. All of the stuff is pretty unique for the tanks. Would make dead iron out of Abrams and Leopards, which is all that matters. :)

The Leopard 2 tank has hunter-killer capability since decades. And it looks like the T-14 armor is a copy of the Leopard 2 armor. And there is a 140 mm cannon with auto loader on the shelf at Rheinmetall for the Leopard and the Abrams tanks since 15 years read for use if needed. Having just a 2 men crew is new, but i doubt this will be an advantage in battle. So, the Russians just catch up with the Western tank technology the West uses since decades, lets see if they can afford to build them. If so, the West will just build the next generation of MBT and the gap will be as large as before. That kind of arms race killed the USSR and will kill the Russian federation too.

Like i said here before, the T-14 /Armata MBT is probably on eyesight with the Abrams/ Leopard 2 tanks of the western armies. This is hardly a great achievement, since the later were designed in the 1970ies and the T-14 is brand new. Up till now the western tanks had the advantage of quality and the Russians of quantity of MBT so things were petty much even. If the Russians really are building the T-14 in huge quantities, the West will react and introduce a new generation of MBTs. That´s no problem for the West at all since the technology for that is on the shelf already. So what´s the purpose for the Russians to do this? Is "national pride" for having a new main battle tank really worth wasting Russia scarce resources for that?

I don't know why the Russian, American and other military feels the need to show off what they have. The best way to fight a war is through the element of surprise. Let the enemy think they are superior then prove yourself on the batlefield.

That will never work. If the enemy is determined they are going to attack regardless of how powerful you are. If anything they can be among the crowd looking for weaknesses before they attack. Remember war mongers aren't sane people so you can't convince them that they will lose. Rational people don't go around looking for wars only irrational and insane maniacs do that. So flaunting what you have is the equivalent of exposing your weaknesses to an irratonal lunatic who's only interest is in finding an easy way to defeat you.

Hey, what's with you guys?

Wasn't this parade supposed to be a demonstration of the new Armata? Well, a new tank isn't like a new Mercedes.  You don't just make the tail lights cool in the extreme and then demonstrate them.  No, there are other mechanical features to point out to friend and foe.

Like Tracklock. (tm)  The ability to make an Armata immobile without entering the password. (at least one capital letter and one lowercase one. plus a few other requirements.)

So if NATO finds a gaggle of Armatas on the field, they will need the tanks' passcode to get them on a flatbed rail car  or tank hauler truck.

That cloud of diesel exhaust was for General Breedlove to choke on.

There are gaggle of reasons that the tracks on the now notorious Armata tank did not turn when the tow tank gunned its engine.

And one of them was that the event was a demonstration of the Armata's ability not to move when movement is counterproductive.  No one who saw the video has any idea what caused the track and its wheels to freeze.

You can be sure that every armoured cavalry officer in NATO has seen that brief demonstration, and like the commentors at zh has an opinion as to why it froze.

It prolly was the transmission or the brakes.

But there is a longshot chance it was purposely done because my man Putin, wanted to show the world what his new tanks can do without having a halting, stop and start segment to his commemorative  parade on Saturday honoring the 70th Anniversary of the Defeat of the Nazis, whose cock all of the leaders of Western Europe are cheerfully sucking on the advice of Obama.

Smoothbore?  What?  Why?  I personally like rifling.  Is the 125 mm gun a flintlock blackpowder as well?

Well, I am not throwing stones at the Russsians here because I have a Honda motocrycle that has a bad coil so no spark on the right cyclinder, a Harley with a bad speed sensor which fucks with the speedometer, the turn signals and the idle and a Hyundai that will run just fine down the freeway but as soon as you come to a stop it dies but then will restart.  The common thread is that it is all electrical bullshit.  So to fix that tank I would start with the electrical components and then move to the hydraulics.  I doubt that the tank has mechanical gearbox.  If nothing else there should be a bleed off on the hydraulic motor that can be opened so that it can be towed.

To me all vehicles, governments and financial systems are pieces of shit that are all ready to break down at any given moment.

A smoothbore enables you to fire types of munitions you can't fire from a rifled barrel, such as rocket/rocket assist projectiles or wire guided munitions. Also, the spin of imparted by a rifled barrel disrupts the shaped charge effect, reducing or nullifying it's armor piercing potential.

A tank without fast exchangeable components is not suitable. Take Leo-II: Each technical part is exachangeable between minutes - e. g. the whole motor in less than 20 minutes. Assembly takes 5 minutes.

Anyone who has served in an armored unit knows that these buggers can happen at any time.

But the folks at RT.com showed that -after waiting for the rest of the rehearsal parade to pass by- the crew got the gears unjammed, by rocking the tank backward a few times. It then drove off under its own power - to the cheers of those nearby.
