Americans Not In The Labor Force Rise To Record 93,194,000
In what was an "unambiguously" unpleasant April jobs payrolls report, with a March revision dragging that month's job gain to the lowest level since June of 2012, the fact that the number of Americans not in the labor force rose once again, this time to 93,194K from 93,175K, with the result being a participation rate of 69.45 or just above the lowest percentage since 1977, will merely catalyze even more upside to the so called "market" which continues to reflect nothing but central bank liquidity, and thus - the accelerating deterioration of the broader economy.
End result: with the civilian employment to population ratio unchanged from last month at 59.3%, one can easily on the chart below why there will be no broad wage growth any time soon, which will merely allow the Fed to engage in its failed policies for a long, long time.

The first chart is such a tell, holy smoke...interesting to note that labor force participation shot up during the first big oil-shock.
Wonder why....

If this keeps up, the unemployment rate will disappear altogether!

When those involved in the labor participation rate get jobs will the "unemployment" number go negative?
yea and when that happens and the labor rate surges back over 67% the FED will raise rates back to 10% and everyone will be given a free pony...

320,000,000 = total population
74,500,000 = children *1
40,300,000 = age 65+ *2
Simple math time
320,000,000
-74,500,000
-40,300,000
= 205,200,000 working age
-93,194,000 *unemployed
= 112,006,000 potentially working full or part-time
= 41.2407% true unemployment rate

Excellent. Now subtract all goobermint workers from that number. And if you want to get really depressed, also subtract out all the useless eaters like educators, lawyers, pharmacrooks, doctors, grant money grifters, nonprofit scammers, and every other indirect parasite, and you'll see that it's already over but the shouting.

41.2407% unemployment, eh?
Given what I see when I leave my house and go anywhere in the public realm, I think you could be not far from correct.
If everyone is working, who would have time to shop, to consume? We don't need more jobs, just more consumption. The Fed will make up the difference.
Automation and robots have grabbed a large chunk. Don't forget the disabled, the unabled and the entitled. That's another 15-20 million.
Bullish. You want fries with that?
And half of them are driving new cars, thanks to securitization backed by Uncle Sugar.
Must be why I'm caught in traffic at 2pm.
But if they give jobs to those children and elderly, making shoes or something, they could get their numbers up to negative unemployment in no time.
That's why we have to pass TPP to find out what's in it. Emporer Hussein promises 10,000 new manufacturing jobs here in
'Murica making Air Jordans. Then, the underpriviledged youth will loot them for free while you make Chinese minimum wages.
Everything's awesome!
Scrape the Bottom With Rodham!
I was just calculating this out, and you beat me to it. This is 94 Million working age population too... Even if it was every aborted baby and senior citizen with alzheimers, it would still be 29% of the population. This is massive. One out of every two people you meet is unemployed. That's approaching 3rd World employment status.
Correction: It is third world employment status.
@Evil Peanut,
Nice work but your math at the very end is off. According to BLS as of April 2015, there are 148,523,000 people employed. (See: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t01.htm )
Using your number of 205,500,000 people in the labor pool, that would leave 56,677,000 as the real number of age-eligible unemployed Americans (includes those institutionalized).
56.677M / 205.5M = 27.6% true unemployment rate.
27.6% unemployment rate is a staggering number. Much worse than the "Great Depression".
EDIT: A post by @spooz shows there are 8.8M people age 65+ in the workforce. So... Adding them back into the workforce:
214.3M workforce - 148.523M jobs = 65.777M unemployed. Which leaves an adjusted unemployment rate of 30.7%.

Yes, that first chart is telling. Especially when you think about what was going on when we were this low on the graph back in the early '70's. Women were no longer staying at home to raise their kids. They were having careers all of their own. So, it's even worse than what it appears at first glance.
Of course, I'm all for the right for everyone to work, but I believe that a big reason the feminist movement was succesful was that establishment knew it would hide inflation. One man (who didn't go to college) could provide for his wife and 3.5 kids. He could save up money and retire with dignity. Fast foward a few decades and the picture is much different: a man and woman boh work, they have to wait until they are in their 30's until they can (somewhat) afford to start a family (1-2 kids), they both have enormous debt, and retirement is as likely as winning the lottery.
Inflation is simply an increase in the money supply. We know that there ismassive inflation today with all the QEs. The affects of the inflation is what is a little more hidden. One way to protect your wealth from the 'hidden tax' is by getting out of the dollar and obtain real assets. Things like real estate, gold and silver. Right now silver is the best buy (look at the gold-silver ratio and how high real estate is currently). I'm making these candles with silver coin prizes (www.etsy.com/shop/ScentSavers) to help raise awareness of inflation and spread real money. They make great graduation gifts as well.
Good insight. How are sales?
Time for the FED to raise rates then, right?

over 93 Million sounds like a LOT to me... but, what do i know? (i don't even work for the Government)
and the majority are sucking some shape and form of a tit which is deserved or not.
I guess they could all just die.....................................................on your lawn.
GET.OFF.MY.LAWN.
If they die on my lawn it will be because they have gone zombie and are threatening my survival.
While your bleeding heart sympathy is surely appreciated by some, please go feed the bears and coyotes. See how many you have on your lawn then.
If this trajectory is maintained, there will be bodies on the lawn.
Just yell at them to go to the White House. Maybe we could get 100,000+ storming the gates demanding their Obama money.
Add to that list 14,096,000 in local government employees, 5,075,000 state employees, and 2,727,000 Federal government employees - http://www.governing.com/gov-data/public-workforce-salaries/monthly-gove... - and you have 115,092,000 non-producing Americans. So 217,800,000 people are between the ares of 18 and 65, so that means 102,708,000 employed in a productive capacity, which would mean an TRUE unemployment rate of 52.8%. Sounds about right.
No wonder the few that want the system of economics and government to be changed are drowned out by the masses in the FSA!
That would be an interesting calculation to make. Take out all govt employees, including military, from both the previous record low and today's, and see what the result was. Last time it was this low, there were no where near as many govt employees, so removing them from the working population number probably wouldn't mean much, but doing that to today's number would have to drop it another 8-10%. It's very disingenuous to count them as employed since they aren't paying taxes, they are consuming them. The true number is even worse than this one.
Don't forget everyone who works for any bank or on Wall Street. Also, don't forget about anyone who works for GE or anyone who owned any stock in 2008. That gubmint titty sure is large and we have all taken a drink. Don't be hypocrites!
I've never taken a government dollar for employment purposes.
then you have never worked, ever
You know what I mean. Never worked in the public sector or any industry that is subsidized by uncle sam or his minions. Public sector employees are just as big of a leach as are unemployed welfare recipients.
You might as well add in all the silicon valley geeks who work to create the newest smart phone apps, & Facebook, & any other bullshit non productive tech whose business model is ghost ad sale revenue & momos forced to bid up the stock price because they're in the S&P.
& whose "life's work", accidentally, turned your 17yo daughter into a Kardashian wanna be amateur porn star.
As much as most will hate to consider it, if we are to be brutally honest, how many working in any capacity are actually contribution to real production? The employment market place is stuffed full of millions trying to squeeze themselves into the middle of every production transaction, from the bankers and salesmen to the middle management corporate person who does virtually nothing but calculate ways to either save or promote their asses. We have government that buries us in "accountability" processes and paperwork and through their "equality" agenda has ensured that many, many people are employed simply because it is too expensive to get rid of them. Not to mention the fact that many of these "Too Diverse To Fail" are moved from positions that require actual performance to "management" positions, that while likely create little effect on production, DO provide a workplace contagion that destroys the spirit of productivity of those who really do want to produce.
Stuff that into your calculations and explain how fucked we are!
@Oldwood
You are EXACTLY correct about everything you say.
But here's the thing. The SYSTEM of government & processes that you refer to become manifest based on one dynamic & one dynamic only... THE FRACTIONAL RESERVE DEBT MONEY SYSTEM...
Occasionally, there is an opportunity to berate that SYSTEM (& otherwise who were responsible for it coming into being - witting or unwittingly)
1. conjuring it up in the first place
2. Who benefits from it (disproportionately)
3. Who, still, CONTROLS it
4. Who has PARLAYED that control into other nodes of power (namely, MSM. political activism, & corrupt jurisprudence)
There should be ZERO denying of any of the above as to "HOW WE GOT HERE"... I believe if an intelligent & otherwise unbiased space alien were to come to this planet and see everything for what it was, they would come to that conclusion.
But THERE is where it all breaks down... Why? because THERE IS A FACE to the "creators" of this system (witting or unwittingly)... Sadly ~ Here' an example... EVEN HERE ON ZH... of what happens when you finally expose the root of the problem...
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-05-07/why-we-have-oversupply-almost-e...
Any involved with social media or phone apps actually contribute to employment because the employed are so busy texting and FBing that productivity goes to shit and you need to hire more texters to get the same level of output.
The USD is subsidized by more productive economies, so if you live in 'Merica you are subsidized BY DEFAULT regardless of how "detached" you are from direct government subsidizes (which you aren't, no one is).
This is the truth. No one is really detached. Show me what you are 'producing' and somewhere, the fool buying it, or the fool paying that fool's paycheck, or the fool paying that fool's paycheck, is being watered by the spigot of Free Cash From Above.
There is no use in pretending "I'm part of productive industry, so I'm OK!" -- it just aint true. I'm close to someone who supplies the computers inside of American automobiles. Pretty private sector, pretty free market, right? He would have completely gone under without the 2008 funny money bailouts. Right now his sales figures are benefitting hugely from the bubble in auto loans.
Let he who is a true "producer", cast the first stone.
Dr. Dickhead~
What is the high % of school kids planning on just doing a "permanent" gov job which all the many pensions and such and good health care. Plus there is no place up the crony "capitalist" ladder than the revolving door to the top positions.
What was that percentage it was super high how many 8th graders are planning for those "permanent" gov jobs with multiple pensions for double dipping....
Just wonder who is gonna pay for it! Lol
How the bots gonna pay for so much gov? And why not replace gov with bots besides the fire, police, military, etc....
Doc, you nailed it, the truth is 52% of the working age people dont produce
also add in the entire DC area, oil subsized companies, GM charity, the war on drug employees (prison guards, money for police dept.), even hollywood propaganda (zero dark thirty types), large drug companies especially with the mandatory vaccine and obamacare laws. Even small businesses sell to schools, govn offices & employees.
sad predicament.
Corruption succeeds because it is so damned profitable. It is based on the concept of profit for nothing and you can't get a ROI like that on anything else. Further, it sustains itself by enlisting all of those in the decision making realm to make sure the cash keeps flowing.
That is funny. My son is leaning the same way. He has always been a STEM kid. Loves the computer/robotics stuff.
One of his STEM club projects was underwater ROVs... really fun project. His group even went to competition with it.
there is a oversupply of engineering grads (has been for decades). The way to get a job is being in a top engineering school OR getting in a co-op/summer intern program.
In the very late 70's, early 80's an engineer could get their first job in aero, in the 60's and 70's a first job in petroleum, but that is the exception. Good grades in an average university will not cut it by itself. Look at the peter schiff video from burbon street in new orleans as an example, this is everywhere in America - not just new orleans. Anyway hope your son gets some job experience.
if you disagree give me an example, sadly kids go through engineering and find out there is no jobs out there. Timing is everything when getting an engineering degree from a lesser ranked school, not many employers will interview and offer.
Or you can ignore me, hope it isn't true, finish without decent intern experience from a non-top 10 school and see if any offers come in.
There are plenty of jobs in Engineering. The problem is that we keep filling them with imported slave engineers and the new grads get left hanging.
h1b's usually are for IT types - which is a very easy degree to get - and yes Indians are the preferred workers.
Many engineering grads from lower tier 1 and tier 2+ schools will not get job offers and end up going into grad/mba and not be consided unemployed, or some just get employed doing unrelated jobs/part time job.
Why do you think corporate America has the visa program? Some jobs get farmed out, some get farmed in.
I hope he likes you. Invites for dinner a few days a week.
we can do better. there are still some people out there supporting themselves with a decent job. this must change.
Mine's writing code at 10.
The govt babysitters got a long way to go if they want to learn about education.
Any one that deals with govt schools today knows that all to well.
If you want your kid educated in the new normal, you have to do it yourself.
+1. DIY if you want your kids to get ahead in the world to come. The current mainstream approach for education is missing the mark by a country mile (for so many reasons).
I teach at one of them there top engineering schools in the country. (We have a Department of Humanities and Social Sciences...as in one department for ALL of them. The piece on yesterday's ZH concerning salaries made me just shakemy head, "yes, of course.")
So my kids get free tuition up here. And you better believe they will be using it. In fact I'll start them earlier than others, taking one class a quarter while being homeschooled.
More importantly...the kids are learning work ethic. The whole family was up at 6am, taking care of the meat chickens, checking on the laying coop, working on the tractor, planting a few more things into the garden, looking to see if the rabbit had her litter, etc. If the kids can push bots around a lot, this is great. It is better to make sure you can feed yourself.
Then I head into the office, they get schoolwork done, and I finally slow down to have lunch and write a bunch of shit on ZH, acting as if I'm a useful member of society...
It is all DIY. All of it. I just heard about a guy who pays $80 for his oil changes. It's synthetic, but $80??? DIY!
I can't wait until mine is old enough for this: http://www.codecademy.com/

Who is going to pay his salary? The unemployed?
While I'm 100% sure there is a participation decline, I'd like to see how many Americans are actually in the labor force and what is being counted to determine these numbers. I'd also be curious if these are men or mostly women leaving the workforce. With the credit boom over "historical balance" is returning, there aren't enough jobs for both sexes, which should be mainly resulting in the wives returning back home, where - per the natural law - they belong anyway.
Robots and tech eventually = mechanical engineers working for shit wages and living in huts with dirt floors. Just like other countries. No one will escape.
"My son went into mechanical engineering knowing this day was coming..."
Hopefully he'll have a few good years of earning power before the robots start to make other robots.
My mechanical engineer brother in law making 105k per yr. was replaced by a Chinese engineer on a visa making 60k.
Robots don't evolve, and they were never alive to begin with.
I guess everything is dying then.
Wages in the USA will never rise due to illegal immigration and globalization.
You typo'ed: Wages in the USA will never rise due to immigration and globalization.
H1B is legal and has killed more US jobs than lettuce picking
One guy from India on H1B can, after a year here, bring his wife and 11 children across the sea to join him. It's very wrong.
The birth rate among educated Indians is very, very low. In fact, the overall fertility rate in India is pretty low (2.5 births per woman), and it would be even lower if it were not for the Muslims there. Indians, like Chinese, frequently abort their baby daughters, so he'd be bringing over his wife and his son and his elderly parents.
Dems & GOP will NEVER fix the usa.
White vs black vs mex vs White http://wp.me/p2kmGE-3WB
It's a permanent, structural decline.
With Miggers, you get Mexico.
With blacks, you get Detroit and Nigeria.
lester has a good point; merikans are being attacked from every angle...globalization, CEOs pusing Congress to open the borders even wider for moar cheap labor, higher taxes for the average Middle Class worker, soaring health care costs, soaring food costs, lower wages, and on and on. We're tumbling into a century of depression and unrest. One might call it soon, "Merika's Dark Age."
Between automation, globalization, and the flood of slave labor coming across the southern border, we will never see wage growth again. Well, maybe after war wipes out a few billion people, but not before then.
Perhaps in just a few percent of top professional jobs. A small band of professional services (tech, medical, etc.). "Hunger Games" world looking more realistic every day as a future outcome.
I guess it depends on the group that is killed off. Decreased population can lead to decreased demand.
TPTB aren't worried about demand. Once they don't need the proles for slave labor then they can have it all to themselves.
They are using their stolen wealth to buy up all real assets and invest in technology that will make the typical citizen completely redundant. They will lament endlessly that our new utopia will unfortunately NOT be able to provide those life extending things such as healthcare and FOOD to the masses. AS our leaders, they will of course need to maintain such things for themselves, for as they have demonstrated through their "strongarming" of the public for funds to save those who were too important to fail.
We need them...up until our dying day.
Truth is treason in the empire of lies
I getting ready to try. Been working for myself, in one way or another, for 20 years +.
I'm in construction. It's getting too, too hard to market my skills, and get paid.
What I have been hearing, from many angles, is high level projects need supervisor talent that just does not exist. It can't be taught. You have to live it. Youngsters with masters degrees are being given the task, and think they can get the job done with an I-pad and a power point presentation.
And they are totally fucking up, and costing developers big bucks in slow jobs and re- dos.
So I have a line on a big boy commercial developer who is starving for talent. I'm going to present my terms, and see what happens. I'll take 150+ to start. Off my clock, and onto his. That's what it will take, or I'm going on permanent vacation, and fuck you world. If I need to run on a treadmill, I'm getting paid, finally. Ride this sucker as hard as possible. The work is fun and easy to me, but bitchez going to pay. Time to learn Spanish. 52 yo. I'll let you turds know how it goes.
