Americans Not In The Labor Force Rise To Record 93,194,000

Tyler Durden's picture

In what was an "unambiguously" unpleasant April jobs payrolls report, with a March revision dragging that month's job gain to the lowest level since June of 2012, the fact that the number of Americans not in the labor force rose once again, this time to 93,194K from 93,175K, with the result being a participation rate of 69.45 or just above the lowest percentage since 1977, will merely catalyze even more upside to the so called "market" which continues to reflect nothing but central bank liquidity, and thus - the accelerating deterioration of the broader economy.

End result: with the civilian employment to population ratio unchanged from last month at 59.3%, one can easily on the chart below why there will be no broad wage growth any time soon, which will merely allow the Fed to engage in its failed policies for a long, long time.

320,000,000

-74,500,000

-40,300,000

-93,194,000 *unemployed

= 112,006,000 potentially working full or part-time

Even if it was every aborted baby and senior citizen with alzheimers, it would still be 29% of the population.  This is massive.  One out of every two people you meet is unemployed.  That's approaching 3rd World employment status.

@Evil Peanut,

Nice work but your math at the very end is off.  According to BLS as of April 2015, there are 148,523,000 people employed. (See: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t01.htm )

Using your number of 205,500,000 people in the labor pool, that would leave 56,677,000 as the real number of age-eligible unemployed Americans (includes those institutionalized).

56.677M / 205.5M = 27.6% true unemployment rate.

27.6% unemployment rate is a staggering number. Much worse than the "Great Depression".

EDIT:  A post by @spooz shows there are 8.8M people age 65+ in the workforce. So... Adding them back into the workforce:

214.3M workforce - 148.523M jobs = 65.777M unemployed. Which leaves an adjusted unemployment rate of 30.7%.

Yes, that first chart is telling. Especially when you think about what was going on when we were this low on the graph back in the early '70's. Women were no longer staying at home to raise their kids. They were having careers all of their own. So, it's even worse than what it appears at first glance.

Of course, I'm all for the right for everyone to work, but I believe that a big reason the feminist movement was succesful was that establishment knew it would hide inflation. One man (who didn't go to college) could provide for his wife and 3.5 kids. He could save up money and retire with dignity. Fast foward a few decades and the picture is much different: a man and woman boh work, they have to wait until they are in their 30's until they can (somewhat) afford to start a family (1-2 kids), they both have enormous debt, and retirement is as likely as winning the lottery.

Inflation is simply an increase in the money supply. We know that there ismassive inflation today with all the QEs. The affects of the inflation is what is a little more hidden. One way to protect your wealth from the 'hidden tax' is by getting out of the dollar and obtain real assets. Things like real estate, gold and silver. Right now silver is the best buy (look at the gold-silver ratio and how high real estate is currently). I'm making these candles with silver coin prizes (www.etsy.com/shop/ScentSavers) to help raise awareness of inflation and spread real money. They make great graduation gifts as well.

Add to that list 14,096,000 in local government employees, 5,075,000 state employees, and 2,727,000 Federal government employees - http://www.governing.com/gov-data/public-workforce-salaries/monthly-gove... - and you have 115,092,000 non-producing Americans.  So 217,800,000 people are between the ares of 18 and 65, so that means 102,708,000 employed in a productive capacity, which would mean an TRUE unemployment rate of 52.8%.  Sounds about right.

No wonder the few that want the system of economics and government to be changed are drowned out by the masses in the FSA!

That would be an interesting calculation to make. Take out all govt employees, including military, from both the previous record low and today's, and see what the result was. Last time it was this low, there were no where near as many govt employees, so removing them from the working population number probably wouldn't mean much, but doing that to today's number would have to drop it another 8-10%. It's very disingenuous to count them as employed since they aren't paying taxes, they are consuming them. The true number is even worse than this one.

As much as most will hate to consider it, if we are to be brutally honest, how many working in any capacity are actually contribution to real production? The employment market place is stuffed full of millions trying to squeeze themselves into the middle of every production transaction, from the bankers and salesmen to the middle management corporate person who does virtually nothing but calculate ways to either save or promote their asses. We have government that buries us in "accountability" processes and paperwork and through their "equality" agenda has ensured that many, many people are employed simply because it is too expensive to get rid of them. Not to mention the fact that many of these "Too Diverse To Fail" are moved from positions that require actual performance to "management" positions, that while likely create little effect on production, DO provide a workplace contagion that destroys the spirit of productivity of those who really do want to produce.

Stuff that into your calculations and explain how fucked we are!

But here's the thing. The SYSTEM of government & processes that you refer to become manifest based on one dynamic & one dynamic only... THE FRACTIONAL RESERVE DEBT MONEY SYSTEM...

Occasionally, there is an opportunity to berate that SYSTEM (& otherwise who were responsible for it coming into being - witting or unwittingly)

1. conjuring it up in the first place

2. Who benefits from it (disproportionately)

3. Who, still, CONTROLS it

4. Who has PARLAYED that control into other nodes of power (namely, MSM. political activism, & corrupt jurisprudence)

There should be ZERO denying of any of the above as to "HOW WE GOT HERE"... I believe if an intelligent & otherwise unbiased space alien were to come to this planet and see everything for what it was, they would come to that conclusion.

But THERE is where it all breaks down... Why? because THERE IS A FACE to the "creators" of this system (witting or unwittingly)... Sadly ~ Here' an example... EVEN HERE ON ZH... of what happens when you finally expose the root of the problem...

This is the truth. No one is really detached. Show me what you are 'producing' and somewhere, the fool buying it, or the fool paying that fool's paycheck, or the fool paying that fool's paycheck, is being watered by the spigot of Free Cash From Above.

There is no use in pretending "I'm part of productive industry, so I'm OK!" -- it just aint true. I'm close to someone who supplies the computers inside of American automobiles. Pretty private sector, pretty free market, right? He would have completely gone under without the 2008 funny money bailouts. Right now his sales figures are benefitting hugely from the bubble in auto loans.

Let he who is a true "producer", cast the first stone.

What was that percentage it was super high how many 8th graders are planning for those "permanent" gov jobs with multiple pensions for double dipping....

Corruption succeeds because it is so damned profitable. It is based on the concept of profit for nothing and you can't get a ROI like that on anything else. Further, it sustains itself by enlisting all of those in the decision making realm to make sure the cash keeps flowing.

there is a oversupply of engineering grads (has been for decades).  The way to get a job is being in a top engineering school OR getting in a co-op/summer intern program.

In the very late 70's, early 80's an engineer could get their first job in aero, in the 60's and 70's a first job in petroleum, but that is the exception.  Good grades in an average university will not cut it by itself.  Look at the peter schiff video from burbon street in new orleans as an example, this is everywhere in America - not just new orleans.  Anyway hope your son gets some job experience.

if you disagree give me an example, sadly kids go through engineering and find out there is no jobs out there.  Timing is everything when getting an engineering degree from a lesser ranked school, not many employers will interview and offer.

Or you can ignore me, hope it isn't true, finish without decent intern experience from a non-top 10 school and see if any offers come in.

h1b's usually are for IT types - which is a very easy degree to get - and yes Indians are the preferred workers.

Many engineering grads from lower tier 1 and tier 2+ schools will not get job offers and end up going into grad/mba and not be consided unemployed, or some just get employed doing unrelated jobs/part time job.

I teach at one of them there top engineering schools in the country. (We have a Department of Humanities and Social Sciences...as in one department for ALL of them. The piece on yesterday's ZH concerning salaries made me just shakemy head, "yes, of course.")

So my kids get free tuition up here. And you better believe they will be using it. In fact I'll start them earlier than others, taking one class a quarter while being homeschooled.

More importantly...the kids are learning work ethic. The whole family was up at 6am, taking care of the meat chickens, checking on the laying coop, working on the tractor, planting a few more things into the garden, looking to see if the rabbit had her litter, etc. If the kids can push bots around a lot, this is great. It is better to make sure you can feed yourself.

Then I head into the office, they get schoolwork done, and I finally slow down to have lunch and write a bunch of shit on ZH, acting as if I'm a useful member of society...

It is all DIY. All of it. I just heard about a guy who pays $80 for his oil changes. It's synthetic, but $80??? DIY!

The birth rate among educated Indians is very, very low.  In fact, the overall fertility rate in India is pretty low (2.5 births per woman), and it would be even lower if it were not for the Muslims there.  Indians, like Chinese, frequently abort their baby daughters, so he'd be bringing over his wife and his son and his elderly parents.

They will lament endlessly that our new utopia will unfortunately NOT be able to provide those life extending things such as healthcare and FOOD to the masses. AS our leaders, they will of course need to maintain such things for themselves, for as they have demonstrated through their "strongarming" of the public for funds to save those who were too important to fail.

I getting ready to try. Been working for myself, in one way or another, for 20 years +.
I'm in construction. It's getting too, too hard to market my skills, and get paid.
What I have been hearing, from many angles, is high level projects need supervisor talent that just does not exist. It can't be taught. You have to live it. Youngsters with masters degrees are being given the task, and think they can get the job done with an I-pad and a power point presentation.
And they are totally fucking up, and costing developers big bucks in slow jobs and re- dos.
So I have a line on a big boy commercial developer who is starving for talent. I'm going to present my terms, and see what happens. I'll take 150+ to start. Off my clock, and onto his. That's what it will take, or I'm going on permanent vacation, and fuck you world. If I need to run on a treadmill, I'm getting paid, finally. Ride this sucker as hard as possible. The work is fun and easy to me, but bitchez going to pay. Time to learn Spanish. 52 yo. I'll let you turds know how it goes.
