Putin Celebrates 70th Anniversary Of Victory Over Hitler, Warns Of Dangers From Unipolar World
Below is the transcript of the speech given by Vladimir Putin at the military parade on Red Square in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory in the 1941–1945 "Great Patriotic War."

Fellow citizens of Russia,
Dear veterans,
Distinguished guests,
Comrade soldiers and seamen, sergeants and sergeant majors, midshipmen and warrant officers,
Comrade officers, generals and admirals,
I congratulate you all on the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War!
Today, when we mark this sacred anniversary, we once again appreciate the enormous scale of Victory over Nazism. We are proud that it was our fathers and grandfathers who succeeded in prevailing over, smashing and destroying that dark force.
Hitler's reckless adventure became a tough lesson for the entire world community. At that time, in the 1930s, the enlightened Europe failed to see the deadly threat in the Nazi ideology.
Today, seventy years later, the history calls again to our wisdom and vigilance. We must not forget that the ideas of racial supremacy and exclusiveness had provoked the bloodiest war ever. The war affected almost 80 percent of the world population. Many European nations were enslaved and occupied.
The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the enemy's attacks. The elite Nazi forces were brought to bear on it. All their military power was concentrated against it. And all major decisive battles of World War II, in terms of military power and equipment involved, had been waged there.
And it is no surprise that it was the Red Army that, by taking Berlin in a crushing attack, hit the final blow to Hitler's Germany finishing the war.
Our entire multi-ethnic nation rose to fight for our Motherland’s freedom. Everyone bore the severe burden of the war. Together, our people made an immortal exploit to save the country. They predetermined the outcome of World War II. They liberated European nations from the Nazis.
Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, wherever they live today, should know that here, in Russia, we highly value their fortitude, courage and dedication to frontline brotherhood.
Dear friends,
The Great Victory will always remain a heroic pinnacle in the history of our country. But we also pay tribute to our allies in the anti-Hitler coalition.
We are grateful to the peoples of Great Britain, France and the United States of America for their contribution to the Victory. We are thankful to the anti-fascists of various countries who selflessly fought the enemy as guerrillas and members of the underground resistance, including in Germany itself.
We remember the historical meeting on the Elbe, and the trust and unity that became our common legacy and an example of unification of peoples – for the sake of peace and stability.
It is precisely these values that became the foundation of the post-war world order. The United Nations came into existence. And the system of the modern international law has emerged.
These institutions have proved in practice their effectiveness in resolving disputes and conflicts.
However, in the last decades, the basic principles of international cooperation have come to be increasingly ignored. These are the principles that have been hard won by mankind as a result of the ordeal of the war.
We saw attempts to establish a unipolar world. We see the strong-arm block thinking gaining momentum. All that undermines sustainable global development.
The creation of a system of equal security for all states should become our common task. Such system should be an adequate match to modern threats, and it should rest on a regional and global non-block basis. Only then will we be able to ensure peace and tranquillity on the planet.

We welcome today all our foreign guests while expressing a particular gratitude to the representatives of the countries that fought against Nazism and Japanese militarism.
Besides the Russian servicemen, parade units of ten other states will march through the Red Square as well. These include soldiers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Their forefathers fought shoulder to shoulder both at the front and in the rear.
These also include servicemen from China, which, just like the Soviet Union, lost many millions of people in this war. China was also the main front in the fight against militarism in Asia.
Indian soldiers fought courageously against the Nazis as well.
Serbian troops also offered strong and relentless resistance to the fascists.
Throughout the war our country received strong support from Mongolia.
These parade ranks include grandsons and great-grandsons of the war generation. The Victory Day is our common holiday. The Great Patriotic War was in fact the battle for the future of the entire humanity.
Our fathers and grandfathers lived through unbearable sufferings, hardships and losses. They worked till exhaustion, at the limit of human capacity. They fought even unto death. They proved the example of honour and true patriotism.
We pay tribute to all those who fought to the bitter for every street, every house and every frontier of our Motherland. We bow to those who perished in severe battles near Moscow and Stalingrad, at the Kursk Bulge and on the Dnieper.
We bow to those who died from famine and cold in the unconquered Leningrad, to those who were tortured to death in concentration camps, in captivity and under occupation.
We bow in loving memory of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, comrades-in-arms, relatives and friends – all those who never came back from war, all those who are no longer with us.

You are the main heroes of the Great Victory Day. Your feat predestined peace and decent life for many generations. It made it possible for them to create and move forward fearlessly.

Western propaganda about this speech makes me puke. Putin's speech is almost entirely about the historic contributiions to the defet of Nazi Germany, and includes praise of the West in addition to mentioning all the USSR's ethnic groups, China, India etc. Only two short paragraphs mention the violations of international law and attempts to establish a unipolar world, and no country is mentioned by name. A following paragraph simply describes the effor to counter this lawlessness.
Yet even the Guardian has a propaganda-filled article about this.

(The people of Hungary had not forgotten the short-lived Communist regime led by Bela Kun ["Cohen"] that had drenched the country in blood before being overthrown by popular forces in 1919.) Failure at the polls in 1945 did not faze the Reds, who set aboutto undermine the Hungarian Republic. After all, as the author reminds his readers, "the whole Communist advance is based on conspiracy and intrigue, and Party members relish and revel in it." By the end of 1947, the Communists, backed by Stalin's Red Army, aborted the fledgling Republic.
To run his Hungarian satrapy, Stalin picked one Matyas Rakosi (born "Roth"), described by Irving as an "ugly Jewish dwarf"who had "the tact of a Kosher butcher." Irving, not one to fear an awkward truth, discovered that the Communist regime and its terror machinery was viewed by the Hungarian people -- and, it turns out, the U.S. State Department -- as being almost entirely in the hands of Jews. He cites the work of an American sociologist, Jay Schulman, who interviewed many Hungarian refugees after the events of 1956 and found that "the Communist leaders were perceived as Jews by almost 100 percent of the people we have seen."

Douglas MacArthur was driven out of the Phillipines in no small measure because FDR diverted a lot of supplies from the Phillipiens to Vladavostok.
The Soviets entered a neutrality pact with Japan in 1941 which allowed them to remove forces from their eastern flank and successfully defend Moscow. Later when victory was assured, the Soviets declared war on Japan. So where were the Russian helping the Us defeat Japan when we really could have used it. Pearl Harbor was attacked after the pact was struck.
Russia was trying to grab half of Poland and entered into an alliance with Hitler in early 1939 to accomplish that end.
Stalin stopped his offensive against the Germans on the banks of the Vistula river outside of Warsaw just as the residents of Warsaw rose up in rebellion. Stalin let the poles do his dirty work for him. Poland was much wealer afterwards and easier to subdue.
Stalin massacred in the Katalin Forest, a very large contigent of the Polish officer corps which had fled to Russia in order to continue the fight.
US/Brits sent all sorts of supplies to Russia through the Artic to Archangel. On one of those convoy runs, more than 80% of the ships were sunk.
Stalin purged more than half of the legacy officer corps in the '30s. if he had left his military alone, hitler never would have thought of invading.
The loss rates of the Allied bomber forces was on the order of 50%. How many Russian bombers were rading Berlin, Hungarian oil fields/refineries, ball bearing factories, etc?
Yes, the Russians lost many more lives that the Aliies, but they were stoooooopid in their use of assets. The Soviets never would have won the war w/o the Allies.

Rommel totally had 2 divisions and a few battalions in North Africa.

But Guderian's troops were but a part of von Bock's Army Group Centre that as of October 1941 (before battle of Moscow) apart from Guderian's 15 divisions included von Weichs' 2nd Army - 8 divisions, von Kluge's 4th Army - 11 divisions, Hoepner's Panzer Group 4 - 11 divisions, Strauss' 9th Army - 15 divisions, Hoth's Panzer Group 3 - 8 divisions.

As of October 1941 the number of German divisions on the Eastern front: 149, the number of German divisions in Africa: 2. These numbers kind of put the skirmishes with Rommel in Africa into perspective.

Poland was a part of Russian Empire until 1918. Upon the Bolshevist revolution and civil war Poland grabbed as much Ukrainian and Byelorussian lands as they could. With all major powers turning a blind eye on Hitler, while USSR was fighting Japan on Khalkhin Gol in 1939, the USSR and Germany agreement allowed to postpone the war to better prepare for it and also it allowed to bring back Ukrainian and Byelorussian lands from Poland.

Yup, carpet bombing, bombing of civilians as in Dresden and Hiroshima, "bombing back into the stone age" are distinctive features of the US and UK way of war.
So what are Poland's natural borders? In the 18/19th century, the Polish military had the upper hand and used to invade Russian all the time. I think perhaps the Danes did as well. One of those Romanov's - Alexander the Great? - put a stop to it. The Muslims/Turks used to invade Crimea all the time. I can't quite recall what th Crimean War was about. I think that Russia got a little too assertive about owning Crimea. The point being that those borders have been rearranged for centuries.
I noticed that you didn't refute Stalin letting the Warsawians and Germans destroy each other while the Red Army sang campsongs on the banks of the Vistula. Stalin slaughtered the Poland officer corps in order to better defeat the Germans. They must have been consuming too many rations.
Thanks for enlightening me about the relative number of troops in Russia vice North Africa. I read a book by German Gen Manfred van Melathin some time ago. He asserted that the movedment of assets from Russia into North Africa was a game changer.
THere is quite a bit of speculation that Stalin leaned very hard on Churchill to bomb Dresden. It would have been unlike Churchill to give in to that sort of pressure. Dresden was a borderline war crime. Hiroshima no doubt saved ten of thousdands of of both Japanese and American lives. Go read about Coventry and the Zepplin raids on London during WWI.

Going back to the 18th century, Russia consistently defeated Poland and ultimately took over their lands. When indeed Poland had an upper hand, it was in 16/17th century. You are off by 2 hundred years. But in 16th century it was not exactly Russia as we know it now. It was rather the Moscowite kingdom. Natural borders of Poland is hard to define based on their 16/17th century borders. It was an expansionist multi-ethnical empire on its own. It was trying to expand until ultimately clashed with Russian Empire, and the Russian Empire prevailed. After this defeat Poland was reduced to its ethnical borders.
Crimea was invaded by turks during the times of Mongolian conquest. It was theirs since then. They have been invading Russian lands from there from time to time, until turks were defeated during the rule of Catherine the Great. So Crimea was annexed to become another part of Russian Empire. This happened in 1783.

The operation resulted in the almost complete destruction of an entire German army group, with the loss of Army Group Centre's Fourth Army, Third Panzer Army, Ninth Army.
But Soviet Army also suffered big casualties during this operation: 200'000~ killed and missing, 590,848 wounded and sick.
Is this what you call singing campsongs? The soviet troops were exhausted and could not continue the offensive, they needed reinforcements, resupplies, and such. This is war. Warsaw uprising was instilled by British empty promises and Polish government in London exile, who were again hostile to Soviets and simply didn't like the idea that it would be Soviets troops who liberate Warsaw from Nazis. So they tried to do this on their own. Stalin was open from the get go that the Soviet troops were not ready for further advances at that point. And when Russia-hostile Britain-supported elements failed once again to show any credible resistance to Nazis, of course, this is once again Russia's fault.

Total Soviet casualties in Poland amounted to some 500 thousand deaths. This is about the same figure as total US casualties in WW2. So that's really funny to see in work absolutely Orwellian accusations of Soviet Army not helping Warsaw uprising. Why then the US waited until 1944 to go to Europe, until the bulk of German war machine was annihilated by Soviets?
Before WW2 Poland and USSR were hostile nations having border disputes. There was covert activity by each side to help their cause. Very unlike Britain and France who were supposed to be friends of Poland. What these friends did to help Poland? Nothing apart from supporting their anti-russian stance. Perhaps Soviets unjustly punished those of the Poles whom they found to be their enemies. This is a controversial story. There are some accounts that Katyn massacre was actually done by Nazis.
