Getting A Job At McDonald's Harder Than Getting Accepted To The Ivy League

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Dark Bid

In society, exclusivity creates desirability. Whether it's that special country club or elite college, privilege is defined by the rejection rate. In the previous era, the Ivy League was one of those prized organizations, and McDonald's was the exact opposite. Now, the New Normal has seized our social convention and turned it on its head.

In 2011, McDonald's announced it would hire 50,000 new employees on April 19 for its National Hiring Day. They eventually hired 62,000 people. Over 1 million people applied. This is noteworthy because many commentators have accused the unemployed of being lazy and unwilling to work. One Zero Hedge reader summarized it best:

With 62,000 hired out of more than 1 million, that leaves the McDonald's acceptance rate at 6.20%. Let's see how that compares with the Ivy League acceptance rate in 2011.

The results are not good. Of course, some commentator will inevitably scold me for comparing the two, as the difficulty of these two tasks are obviously very different. When I say it's "harder" to get a job at McDonald's, I mean it's harder statistically speaking, as if you were a gambler in Vegas playing the odds. From this perspective, the results are indisputable. It would make more sense to bet on the Ivy League applicant than the McDonald's job seeker.

It has been four years since McDonald's National Hiring Day. Time for a check-up. Let's see how the McDonald's Class of 2015 compares with the Ivy League Class of 2015.

While the average college student accumulated over $25,000 in debt, the average McDonald's part-time employee made $40,000 over 4 years. At an Ivy League school, there are generally three possible ways to confront the bill: get a scholarship, have wealthy parents cover the entire bill, or go into massive debt. Some of these Ivy League students might be paying off their debt for decades. Meanwhile, instead of being in the hole, the part-time McDonald's workers made money overall. Of course, they are all on food stamps, but never mind that.

It makes sense that the Ivy League is exclusive. A ticket to the American aristocracy and a seven-figure income in investment banking or consulting is definitely quite the adventure. But not everyone can make it, and not everyone is interested in that lifestyle. Most people just want to live a normal life. But "normal" isn't what it used to be. Forget the Alpha Beta Kappas and the Gamma Theta Vegas. Now, if you can get into the French Fry Fraternity, you are living high in the new American dystopia.

The McDonald's job situation shows what a farce the official unemployment rate really is. According to the government's goal-seeked data, the unemployment rate is 5.4%. Meanwhile, in reality, 93.8% of applicants can't even get a job at McDonald's. If you can't get a job there, where can you work?

Can the situation get any worse? Yes. A company called Momentum Machines has dubbed themselves "The Next Industrial Revolution." They made a machine that can make 400 hamburgers per hour.

Momentum Machines cofounder Alexandros Vardakostas said the device "isn't meant to make employees more efficient. It's meant to completely obviate them."

The McDonald's acceptance rate will keep getting lower and lower. In a society where efficiency is all that matters, eventually, the economic concept of "human capital" will be superseded by "human liability," where humans are targeted for replacement or outright extermination.

These stats are misleading.  Ivy League schools have a filing fee that discourages some applicants.  If Micky D's was to charge an application fee, I imagine the gap would close.  And it would be yet one more ludicrous facet of that clown orgy pig puddle that we call the American Economy.

In this shitty economy...

I'd be willing to bet there are some Ivy-League grads...

Actually flippin' hamburgers at McDonald's!

You would win that bet.  However if you were to receive a federal loan in order to purchase your own spatula, headset, and team uni, I imagine that the gap would close even further.

Surprisingly McDonalds and prison are also very similar. All day you serve Big Macks and you go to sleep smelling of special sauce.

Before y'all get cooked up about this, let me remind you it's alpples and oranges. What was the GPA of said million applicants? Compare the criminal records of both Ivy-League schools and McDonald's applicants. Ethnic make-up? IQs? There is a hell of a lot more than just the body count.

68 million with criminal records (felonies is smaller, but still substantial). That's 68 million already on the electronic plantation.

True.  If you paid McDonalds 50k a year tuition they would have a good incentive to hire you.  They would even let you party and pull the bird all year like in college.

you know, there are 3 kinds of students who go to ivy-league schools ... very wealthy or extremely smart or a favoured minority ... of those 3 group i see none who would be working for minimum-wage jobs.

Then again, McDonald's has a salary that discourages some applicants, too. Although that doesn't balance things out perfectly, it's still a deterent for many.

You have to pass a DRUG TEST to go to work for McDonalds - no such thing is part of getting into an Ivy League School.   I suspect Ivy Leaguers would fail drug tests at the same - or higher rate - than McDonalds applicants.

One more reason the 'War on Drugs' is serving as an excuse to further polarize US society.   Most minimum wage jobs involve a drug test - and often have ongoing tests.  It's a real problem to find applicants who CAN pass.

The Deep State is making a fortune off drugs (NO Heroin problem when the Taliban was running Afghanistan - now after a dozen years of US presence it's an epidemic.... not to mention Iran- CONTRRA drug running, Vietnam era heroin and more).  Instead of the state providing SOMA to its underclass - it profits from having those people BUY the drugs they use AND selectively enforces laws to fill prisons with the underclass.

The poor and uneducated are too ignorant to see how they are being used and manipulated. If you're black or Hispanic a few joints mean serious problems while while Wall Streeters spent a fortune on coke.    The former blue collar workers of America are now using meth or heroin (after getting hooked on prescription pain killers).  Meanwhile music and media still push drugs and glamorize it.   You have to be smart enough to realize the traps being set for you and avoid them.  Easier said than done but if you're black and get an engineering degree you are set.  And it's a hell of a lot easier to do that than getting an NBA or record contract.

Fuck them, if I can't have the cheesy clown job, then all bets are off!!! Big maC's or not.  Greasy fries or not.  Having the shits everynight after working there , or not.

Imagine so many want a low paying job to poison others.  Dealing drugs would be more fun and at least the clients felt better than being all bloated full of shitfood.

McDonalds will pay a person money to work for a living.

An ivy league will loan you money like a bank.

That's the plan, no one works and everyone is in debt up to their eyeballs with loans that will never be paid back while carrying degrees that don't mean a damn thing from places that are as credible as a vocational college by their over selling their position for 'quality' education.

america has been sold out by economist that think free trade is really free and fair. free trade is great if the living conditions and freedom and the same across borders but they are not.

my grandfather fought ww2 came home worked till he was 70 for 2 co. one paid for his nd both trained him for his position.  scumbag managers that learned that money and profit are the most important learned that if they make congress sign free trade agreements they can move productin overseas and pay penniesor unskilled labor even after training expense. they also learned that they could convience millions of parents to pay theyre hard earned money or their kids money they havn't made yet on school to get a serv/mng job they would save. now we have too many degrees and no unskilled labor jobs. the corupt politicans will advcate more trade and co will say they need to import educated labor from overseas (visa) but its all to cut expense and its unamerican.
