Execution By Anti-Aircraft Gun: The Photographic Evidence

Tyler Durden's picture

North Korean defense minister Hyon Yong Chol made a mistake: he fell asleep at an official event at which Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un was present.

Kim, keen on sending a strong message amid rumors that his grip on absolute power may be slipping, reportedly decided that the appropriate punishment for napping during a rally is execution by anti-aircraft gun.

If true, this would mark the latest in a series of “purges” which seem to lend some credence to the notion that Kim’s family name is no longer sufficient when it comes to securing absolute power and universal admiration both from his inner circle and from North Koreans in general. At a more basic level, executing someone with a ZPU-4 pretty much ensures that nobody will ever be caught napping at official events ever again.

Since the story broke there have been a few competing accounts of what fate ultimately befell General Chol, but according to the Committee For Human Rights In North Korea, satellite images from last October confirm the defense minister might well have met his fate at the hands of four 14mm heavy machine guns normally used to shoot down helicopters.

Via HRNK:

While examining satellite imagery of an area near the North Korean capital city, the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) and AllSource Analysis, Inc. (ASA) may have come across evidence of a ghastly sight: the public execution of several individuals by anti-aircraft machine gun fire.

A military training area generally known as the Kanggon Military Training Area is located approximately 22 km north of the capital city Pyongyang (Pyongyang-si). Given the size, composition, and location of the training facility, it is likely used by both the students and staff of the elite Kanggon Military Academy (6 km to the southwest) and units from either the Pyongyang Defense Command or the Ministry of State Security. Encompassing approximately 12km2, the training area is composed of a number of dispersed small facilities. One of those facilities, located 1.5 km northeast of the small village of S?ngi-ri, is a small arms firing range (39. 13 48.64° N, 125. 45 29.03° E). This firing range is approximately 100 meters long by 60 meters wide and consists of 11 firing lanes. A range control/viewing gallery and parking area are located immediately south of the firing range. A small drainage ditch horizontally bisects the firing range. This firing range is typical of many ranges throughout North Korea and is designed for small arms training and maintaining proficiency for weapons ranging from pistols to light machine guns, and chambered for 7.62mm (the standard AK-47 rifle round) or less.

Sometime on or about October 7th, 2014, some very unusual activity was noted on satellite imagery of the Kanggon small arms firing range. Instead of troops occupying the firing positions on the range there was a battery of six ZPU-4 anti-aircraft guns lined up between the firing positions and the range control/viewing gallery. The ZPU-4 is an anti-aircraft gun system consisting of four 14.5mm heavy machine guns (similar to a U.S. .50 caliber heavy machine gun) mounted on a towed wheeled chassis.

And would anyone in full possession of their faculties fire an anti-aircraft gun at this small arms firing range?

It is neither safe nor practical to use such weapons on a small arms range, as the combined weight of fire from the six ZPU-4 (a total of 24 heavy machine guns) would quickly destroy the downrange backstop and necessitate reconstruction.

A few meters behind the ZPU-4s there appears to be either a line of troops or equipment, while farther back are five trucks (of various sizes), one large trailer, and one bus. This suggests that senior officers or VIPs may have come to observe whatever activity was taking place. Most unusual in the image, perhaps, is what appears to be some sort of targets located only 30 meters downrange of the ZPU-4s.

In case you are still skeptical, here is why those “some sort of targets” were likely human beings who we assume committed “some sort of” treason in Kim’s estimation:

The satellite image appears to have been taken moments before an execution by ZPU-4 anti-aircraft machine guns. Busing in senior officers or VIPs to observe a ZPU-4 dry-fire training exercise at a small arms range amidst North Korea’s fuel shortages would make no sense. If the ZPU-4s were brought to the range solely to be sighted in, conducting this exercise at a 100 meter small arms firing range would be impractical. A live-fire exercise would be even more nonsensical. Rounds fired by a ZPU-4 have a range of 8,000 m and can reach a maximum altitude of 5,000 m. Positioning a battery of six ZPU-4s to fire horizontally at targets situated only 30 m downrange could have no conceivable utility from a military viewpoint. The most plausible explanation of the scene captured in the October 7th satellite image is a gruesome public execution.

Just out of morbid curiosity, how might an execution by anti-aircraft fire unfold?

Anyone who has witnessed the damage one single U.S. .50 caliber round does to the human body will shudder just trying to imagine a battery of 24 heavy machine guns being fired at human beings. Bodies would be nearly pulverized. The gut-wrenching viciousness of such an act would make “cruel and unusual punishment” sound like a gross understatement.

We'll close be reiterating what we said earlier this week. Even if General Chol was indeed an unwilling participant in a recreation of the scene which HRNK claims played out last October at the Kanggon Military Training Area, it could have been worse. He could have merely had a visit from a lethal drone operated out of Nevada, and disappeared in an unsourced explosion, with the same effect.

"Inhumane and barbaric".

OK, becuase lethal injections and electric chairs never go wrong, taking ages to poison or burn the victim to death?

After the first round hit him, that guy was very dead. Anything afterwards is literal overkill.

The set up may be very barbaric, the method used is oddly humane and pretty efficient. American MSM commentary is without any sense of self analysis.

Don't forget Guantanamo Concentration Camp, where framed victims get tortured to death.

The North Korean method of execution inflicts no physical pain beside the potential psychological impact prior to the firing. But if the target was a general, that's to be discounted.

I have never shot one of these guns -

But I bet they are not all that accurate at 30 meters - good chance the first few hundred rounds fired were not on target.

Or

Maybe Dear Leader ordered the first few hundred rounds to be missed on purpose

At 40 rounds per second a couple hundred would be spent in 5 seconds.

Furthermore at $5/round that amounts to $200/second. Even Dear Leader has a pocketbook and a budget.

My bet is that he was dead in the first second. Not a bad way to go...quick...painless....IF...if it happened at all.

A guy I knew was in Long Bin, army lieutenant. Talked his way into a river run on a specially modified Swift Boat.  The modification was a quad .50 mounted on the deck--everytime they came back from a patrol, if they'd used it,  they'd have to refasten the deck.  They rigged it up because they got sick of being shot at from jungle cover.  Anyway, the time my buddy went up the river with them, gunner says: see that?  There was a tiger on the muddy river bank.  He opened up for a few seconds and the basically the whole beach went 30ft in the air, trees fell over.  "Yeah it tears the boat up but you can see why they don't shoot at us much anymore."

Yes, I know the gun mount you are speaking of. It was developed way back in WWII. It was half track mounted by the army as mobile anti aircraft artillery. And the Navy did indeed mount it on river craft during the Vietnam war. It was one hell of a weapon! The Navy had developed a whole array of river craft. The Swift Boat was large and fast, the PBR's fast and small. All kinds of landing craft were armored and fitted with cargo space to carry Marines and ammo. Also special gun boats were built from landing craft. The Navy also brought in it's own helicopter gun ships to support the river forces. They operated sometimes from big LSTs docked on the river. It was the Brown Water Navy, and pretty large at it's peak. They even had an armored landing craft with flame thrower. As far as I know the Navy got all the volunteers they needed to man these craft. There was even competition to get the assignment.

When  I was in the Navy, the word was if you got in some deep shit, you might get out by volunteering for brown water. So there were volunteers and then there were "volunteers." Lots of people joined the Navy in the late 60s to avoid Vietnam.

These guns are used often to engage ground targets by both sides in the Ukrainian civil war. Just don't be caught out in the open when these shells are flying! The Germans perfected the use of light and medium anti aircraft artillery in infantry combat. During the winter of 41 and 42 during the Soivet counter attack before Moscow, the Germans desperate to hold ground built defense points around 20MM and 88MM anti aircraft guns. It worked so well, they used tha tactic throught the war. Quad 20MM being especially effective, unless or until a Soviet T-34 tank came along, then it was game over.

One military expert called the Ukrainian civil war "World War II without airpower". The tactical fighting is just like WW II on the eastern front. Only the rebels shoot down any Ukrainian aircraft that attempt to engage ground targets.

As for a firing squad with these guns, well, hell, you sure aren't gonna know what hit you!

http://rt.com/news/kim-jong-il-ill-dead-north-korea-135/

ZH commentators are not very good observers of sheeple behavior.  Comments like NK why don’t you fight back are sophomoric and uniformed.  NK people were crying when Jong ILL died.

Stockholm syndrome is capture bonding:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

“ Identifying with the aggressor is one way that the ego defends itself. When a victim believes the same values as the aggressor, they cease to be perceived as a threat.”

Note that Hitler did not attack his people, but instead employed and housed them.  The German’s loved Hitler because he was their protector, especially after the Versaille treaty had induced both privation and hyperinflation.

Stalin, in 1930 started collectivizing, thus raping the countryside to pay for forced industrialization.  This privation of the people was complete, disenfranchising them from the land and taking away their independence.

The Ukrainian holocaust or the Holodomor (1932-1933) was part of this collectivization, to then pay for forced industrialization, so the communist international could then take over the world. Ukrainians were reduced to eating their own children as the Bolsheviks confiscated all the grain, to then sell on world markets. In 1930 Hitler wasn’t even in power (1933), yet the Communists were already planning on carving up both Poland and Germany.  And from there, they wanted the world.

Communism is a failed ideology, where all power pyramids to a great leader.  This great leader then holds the people captured.  NK communism is a vertical power pyramid, with money power, religious authority, and political power all coming to a point in one person.  If one psychopath is in that position of authority, then it becomes a hell zone for everybody else.

Today, when money makes division of labor, then people don’t live off the land.  They specialize in their work, which makes them vulnerable to invisible money power pyramids.

The west is run by an invisible money power pyramid; yes more subtle than communism, but still enslaving.

Doesn’t it seem ironic that the promoters of these power pyramids, those that formed communism, and those that shill for private credit money, are of the same tribe?

Yes, it is our friendly jews and their ill effects on humanity, still on display and still with us.  The Jewish problem remains.

If the NK people were monetarily free, then they would not be identifying with their aggressor.

It all begins and ends with the money system.  Humanity cannot be free with our money system being owned (loaned into existence credit) by a private oligarchy.  This oligarchy in turn, does not have compassion for others; they only have elitist compassion for their in-group.

This article is silly.  I would expect the rate of fire of just one of those guns to be about 20 rounds per sec.  A single 50 cal (14 mm) round will do a boatload of damage to a human.  So you get hit by a burst from two four gun batteries - about 160 rounds maybe?  You wouldn't know what hit you.  Over very quickly.  Humane I would say.  Unlike lethal injection in this country.  What would I care what my corpse looks like?

So the execution by a very high-ranking member of a regime that comes about as close to qualifying of the definition of the embodiment of evil as any I have ever heard of (as someone who refuses to reify the concept evil) is good or bad? I'm confused here.

And all of the political prisoners and forced laborers and victims of repressions and brainwashed subjects (so brainwashed they make the average US, scratch that, the average PRC citizen look downright iconoclastic, Borg-tier brainwashed)? Instantaneous death by anti-aircraft barrage is about as far removed rom typical human execution methods that it's practically not on the same scale at all. The only way it could be more humane, as executions go, is if it he didn't have time to suspect it.

(Oh by the way, the argument about impracticality is a textbook denial tactic in the context of just about every crime-against-person you can think of: "there's no way Medieval executioners used <any of the methods they bragged and documented about using and for which there is ample physical evidence of the use of too>, it's just so impractical! They would have just cut people's heads off or drowned them and been done with it!" How is it impractical if the entire point is to cause maximum suffering, to the extent that, in the case of Medieval torture, "doctors" could make a living ensuring that the victims failed to expire for as long possible?)

North Korea is an engineered state, with only one purpose; to be so bizarre and revolting so that ANY leader in any country/regime can point finger at it when questioned by its own citizenry, and say "you call us dictators? how dare you, what do you think this is? North Korea?" and the crowd response can only be "oh, yeah, you're right".

Even Saudi royal family (which must be 2nd place behind Korea) can say "You think beheadings are cruel and barbaric? Look at North Korea? They kill people with AA guns for dozing off at a meeting!" And who among us hasn't dozed off at a meeting, so we go "fuck, he does have a point".

It's a James Bond villain country, for a reason.

A real James Bond villian would use an over engineered, prone to failure killing contraption. He would then secure the executee in an easily escapable position.

Then he would go attend to some other nafarious venture, presuming that the execution proceeds flawlessly.

The gut-wrenching viciousness of such an act would make “cruel and unusual punishment” sound like a gross understatement.

How the fuck is instant death more, "cruel and unusual" punishment then strapping someone down, helpless, in an hours long ceremony, and injecting them with paralytics and poisons that take hours to kill them?  I don't trust any government with the power to kill, but when my time comes, please punish me cruelly and unsusually by blasting me with 24 cannon rather then injecting me with a series of poisons that torture me to death.
