I agree with you on the futility of digital significance if you are referring to the lack of physicality.
When I issue a print, it will be around 100 years minimum.
I have old pictures on floppy discs and I am too lazy to convert them.
I suspect the next big thing will be to try to force eveyone to store all their images in the cloud by default. Flickr is already trying to convince everyone to do this.
