Someone Is Lying: Job Optimism Plummets To Levels Unseen Since Financial Crisis

Tyler Durden's picture

The percentage of respondents to University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Survey that "think they (or their spouse) will lose their job over the next 5 years" soared to its highest since March 2009.

Either the BLS' workers are lying, or the government's data on jobs is 'misleading'

According to UMich Curtin:

  • CURTIN: TRADE GAP'S INFLUENCE ON JOBS BIGGEST SENTIMENT RISK

And worse still:

  • CURTIN: MAJORITY OF DECLINES THIS SIZE OCCURED IN RECESSIONS

But do not worry:

  • CURTIN SAYS DOESN'T EXPECT CONSUMER SPENDING TO RETRENCH

Though he offered no actual reason for his expectation.

Finally, we note the last time this happened...

Personal Spending Collapsed!

I find it curious the MSM lack of interest in the background of AMTRAK engineer Brandon Bostian.

For some reason I feel if Mr Bostiam had been photographed at a Tea Party Rally holding a flag, rather than a gay rights march holding a cardboard sign saying “Hugs for free” there would be much more interest.

Then again I am very cynical.

Right, because he's gay, the real problem is the lack of spending on safety features, the lack of effort by Amtrack from their federal funding to improve safety, the tightness of the turn.

If he had been cisgendered and gun-toting, he would of course be the problem that caused the accident.

CE- are you saying he set the auto-pilot on the train to zero altitude on that section of track to intentionally crash it into a mountain?

That would be freaky because I made exactly the same joke on here a few weeks ago about the derailed crude oil train.  That was about the same time that wack-a-doodle flew the German Air plane into the side of a mountain because he was gay and "depressed" or whatever.

But it was just a joke at the time.  Now it may actually be happening?  A depressed gay guy intentionally wrecking a train?

Another self-absorbed, distirbed pervert's self-loathing finally overcame him. Not having access to a jumbo jet, he figured he'd commit suicide by high-speed train to get his fifteen minutes of attention whoring from beyond the grave.

Unfortunately for him, he only succeeded in killing other people.

Oh dear me, Bostian is not going to enjoy prison.

People, whether productive or not, all have to eat and shit, period.  If people are fortunately enough to have additional income, after eating and shitting, they might spend that money on other non-essentials.  As far as I am concerned, the government should have minimal say in terms of exactly what those non-essentials are.

Retailers like Macy's, J.C. Penney, and Kohl's have all reported mediocre results this week.

The companies have blamed a variety of temporary factors — such as delayed inventory shipments, bad weather in February, and fewer international tourists — for the slowdown in business.

But Americans are increasingly spending less on clothes and home furnishings, a trend that could hurt the companies' businesses for years to come.

Gold has been weak compared to dollar drops. In my head as I watch lately. I know talks of stronger silver and gold holding if not rising some but.... Gold hasn't been responding to falling dollar as it was being held back when it was acting like it wanted to rise on a stronger dollar. Though gold demand is still there. Golds been lazy from my point of view when dollar has had some real fall out crash downs.

I am one to blast the wellfare state as much as anyone but the core of the problem lies not in the wellfare programs but the bank bailouts.  TARP, TARP II, and the QEs are the problem.  Let's remember it is not just Obama, but the WH that makes these decisions.  Rahm, Dick, Rummy, these fuckers too.  Let's put Obama on blast but never forget the problem stretches bac decades to Billery, Bush the ELder, and yes, even Ronald McDuchebag.

Nobody has to be lying. The two metrics obviously no longer correlate. Look at the spike in worry in 2011 that has no spike in claims. All this tells us are that people are more worried about job loss since the Great Recession, and they are getting a little more worried of late. But initial claims are still going down.

Consider this: Employers probably have more ways to cut hours now without actually laying people off. It is easier to reduce someone from 29 hours to 20 than it is to chop a full time person from 40 to 30.
