The problem isn't the gun; it is perception and expectation. Cops deal with people who need to be policed (think military when you had to police the barracks - pick up the garbage). Their perception of individuals carrying weapons is influenced by their reality. Urban black vs suburban white. The natural tendency is to think the worse about the urban dweller. Suburban dweller not as many negative events. The cops perception is influenced by his reality. Perceptions drive expectations.
I believe in open carry. Every one would be nicer and polite. However, I can understand why the cops acted differently. I'd be curious to know what neighborhoods these events occurred in. If the white guy did that in the hood, things might turn out differently. Someone from the neighorhood may have "stopped" him well before the cops arived.
For a more 'controlled' study you could look at the incident where the cops shot a black guy for holding a toy gun in wal-mart (ohio, open carry state). White people love to open carry in wal mart.
