Looked at the numbers and the true cash on cash cost was something in the 10+% range.
I mention it to the guy, he just nods his head and says "Well, that's what they give me." He knew the low rate math wasn't for real.

My wife has a friend who's husband is charming, good-looking, totally charismatic, but it otherwise a completely typical ghettoland deadbeat who spends his days playing video games, hanging out, running little scams here and there, and almost certainly chasing a bit of tail on the side. He has never held down a job for more than couple of weeks, despite the fact is he young, healthy, and perfectly able to work. The wife and friend has historically been the breadwinner, and she has always toiled to keep some kind of roof over the heads of themselves and their two young children.
He got himself into a bit of real legal trouble with a bad credit card situation, and the family had to flee NY. The ended up in California, on the edge of being homeless with barely enough to feed themselves.
Then the state stepped in. They now have "shelter housing" (which is a beautiful, brand new 3BR apartment with granite kitchens, etc), free day care, free health insurance, food stamps, WICS, and some kind of cash allowance to boot. The apaprtment wasn't ready so that state has put them up in a Holiday Inn Express for 3 weeks. They went out for sushi to celebrate. Two nights in a row. It's not totally free. At some point, they will be expected to pony up $800/mo. for this package. And there is a time limit. 5 years. At which point they will be transferred to a different program, which might even be more generous by the sounds of it.
He can play vids all day. I toil 60 hours a week. And I'm pretty sure he has more disposable income than me.
I'm a tax donkey for the top and the bottom, and they both live better than me. So yeah, I'm ready for a revolution.

Guy I know in CA is on Fed and State welfare programs. Same type of "low income housing" (top of the line by most standards, 3 br, etc.) has full medical, EBT, subsidies/stipends, etc, drives a year or 2 old Jag and same age Mini cooper. No pain. Doesn't do shit. Unemployable as something or other supposedly.
Over here, people quit their job, apply for social housing which is also pretty nice, appartment if you’re alone, a house with a yard if you have children.
They pay 75 to 100 euro’s for it a month which working people would need to pay up to 1000 euro’s a month for the same thing.
And once they get the house, they start looking for a job and they get to keep the house for 75 to 100 euro’s a month.
And even if they don’t get a job:
They get like 900 euro’s a month minimum. The house costs 100 euro’s and they can spend 800 on luxury.
On the other hand.
A normal person who works gets 1600 to 1700 euro’s a month
These pay 1000 for rent and get to spend 600 to 700 a month minus car costs to get to work and they need to work at least 8 hours a day.
Guess who’s the smart guy in the story?
And we believe this system is normal and can last forever...
Here in the US, states get block grants for TANF (TEMPORARY assistance for needy families) and kick people out of the program if they can't find employment after 36 months. After that, their kids go into the foster care system if their families can't manage. Tough love in the bastion of capitalism...but ZH doesn't like telling THOSE stories. I had an MB 500SEC AMG back in 1998. Fine car , very fast, (260kph) but wait until you see the insurance bill and tires cost about 300 euros each,. not to mention the front disc rotors which you wil wear out FAST.
