Mapping Marijuana Prices In The US

Tyler Durden's picture

Want cheap weed? Don't go to North Dakota, where you'll pay nearly $400 an ounce. You're far better off in Orgeon where the going rate is just $204. And while some evidence indicates that the tax-related markup on legal, recreational marijuana has driven buyers back into the black market, the average price per ounce looks to support the idea that legalization drives down prices.

As you can see from the map below, the mean price for an ounce of marijuana in the United States is $324, according to the subtly named “PriceOfWeed.com”, a site which crowdsources average prices from users across the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Not coincidentally, the states where prices are lowest are also the states where recreational use is legal.

As a side note on taxation and legal marijuana, it appears that while some legal weed proprietors are happy to pay their fair share, the inconsistencies between state and federal laws make the reality anything but equitable.

Via NY Times:

Dispensary owners who once feared raids by drug enforcement agents say they take pride in paying taxes like any other business. They say it brings them out of the shadows and distinguishes them from the black market. Marijuana advocates trumpet tax-collection numbers to show that the industry is pouring millions of dollars into state budgets.

“It is the last domino that has to fall for us to be treated like any other business in the country,” said Tim Cullen, a co-owner of five marijuana shops in Colorado. “We’re not a black-market cocaine dealer. We’re totally on board and on the level. We’d like to be treated as such.”

A normal business, for example, might pay a 30 percent federal rate on its taxable income, which would represent its gross income minus deductible business expenses. A marijuana business, on the other hand, might pay the same federal rate on all of its gross income because it cannot take these deductions. The difference can raise the rate on a marijuana business to 70 percent or more of its profits.

Whatever the case may be, we suspect the widespread legalization of marijuana wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to the US right now because although the $53 million in tax revenue Colorado took in during the first year of legalization was underwhelming by some estimates,  the massive underfunded pension liabilities and gross fiscal mismanagement that plague the country’s state and local governments seem to suggest that every little bit of incremental revenue would help especially if legalization saves on drug enforcement costs.

What world is this website talking about?
The government runs the Fed and the government is interfering in the market?
The Fed is 100% owned and controlled by the banks.
The Fed is the reason the government has to tax you.
The market is 100% manipulated by the banks. It creates shit the market doesn't need. It breaks the market. The market fails to punish the banker parasites. The market fully subsidizes the banks but that's not enough, the government subsidizes the banks and they get to commit dozens of crimes with impunity.
So WTF is Tyler talking about with this government "central planning" shit?

"Marijuana Prices In The US"

A friend tells me...yeah that 's the ticket...a friend tells me that in HS 1972 weed was $10 a "lid" (ounce).  Good, not best, but damn good.

Acid was $2 a "hit" (mostly blotter), and thus cheaper than pot.

Same for "cross tops" (amphetimine).

Cost-push inflation is part of the increase, but mostly its just typical margin, adding to margin, adding to margin being passed around the upward spiral.

Funny how "dilution" sounds like "delusion"....

More $2 acid "capitalism"!

Smokers who are unmotivated are in similar proportion to type-A smokers, as non-smokers.

More propaganda, unscientific polling, or both.

I started 45 years ago, yet you use things I invented or helped develope every day. My pals can all make similar claims. Your life would be different if mj lowered just MY motivation. Besides, productive smokers seldom admit it (they have prestigious jobs) and this skews any casual poll.

Don't be shilly.

all these "old " prices you people throw out are stupid. Location and quality are key in the argument.

Pot is 20 times more potent than decades ago.

It's $50 here in playacar.  great stuff

it's $150 in Patagonia . like smoking dirt.

It's around $200 in the US where it is apparently " legal " in some states, yet your prison system is full of drug dealers doing decades for selling pot.

Interesting economics.  I found an article about grow warehouses in Denver.  25,000 sq foot warehouse can grow 120 pounds a month.  16 ounces to a pound.

So that is 1,920 ounces per month x avg $300 retail. $576,000 a month.

Indiana has a better climate for it if you know what to look for. Picking the correct location is key, you could easily get 2000 pounds in one harvest from a couple acres outdoors. Processing is the only real draw back, harvesting, drying and curing are all labor intensive. You wouldn't want to process more than a ton of it at a time. That's not a bad business if you're lucky enough to possess the skills and patience to do it. Its not everyone's cup of tea.

Outdoor grow does not have the same potency as the medical grade indoor grown variety. The potent indoor stuff commands a high price and higher demand and thats why the medical dispensaries can charge obscene prices per gram.  The best outdoor grow in the whole US comes from Cali, hands down.

This is patently false. The reason for this is growers are genetically manipulating the strains to produce high THC plants in the environment they are growing them in. California has few natural cannabis groves, if any. A natural cannabis grove is a rare thing to find these days. Mostly it has to do with the taproot and the soil type that its in. I could take the best cannabis going right now, put it in its natural habitat and after a few years of freedom, this plants would be the best in the world. Hands down. Its been done in these parts before and it will happen again. I've seen California outdoor grows. You people are something special, I'll give you that much.

Here in Oregon there is a burgeoning cottage industry in "home growing".  Anyone with a steady habit knows how, and some take it seriously.  Most legal growers, who are licensed to grow for medical permit holders (which has been a joke since medical use was legalized a few years back) grow a few extra plants and sell them off to friends.

Point is, a liquid and vibrant "black" market/home grow scene keeps the dispensaries honest.  Since there is little to no risk in using the black market (the cops don't care; it's no big deal at all to see people walking down the street smoking a joint in downtown Portland at midday), most folks simply won't let the legal dispensaries gouge them.  The only advantage the dispensaries really have is edibles and tinctures; and if you don't know how to make nice candy or cakes, the dispensaries are worth the price.

It's simple supply and demand.  I cannot figure out, though, why the totally legal pot shops across the river in the Couve are so outrageously overpriced. My guess is taxes, as your average Warshington pol is a malignant little confiscator.

In Washington, you'll be dealing with the following as a producer, processor or retailer:

- You cannnot both produce/process and retail.  You must choose one or the other.

- Retail shops have no COGS to deduct from their taxes, so basically all profit gets a ~35% hit.

- Best case scenario, you have a 25% excise tax from a producer/processor and a 25% tax at the retailer, plus WA sales tax, plus local tax.

- All producers, processors and retailers have to have 24/7 camera surveillance with 45 days of storage.  Each camera must be covered by another camera, doubling the number of cameras.

- Marijuana liability insurance is required and is generally upwards of $10k / year for a modest operation.

- All plants, clones, seeds, etc. must be tracked in a state traceability system.  That will run a producer/processor about $400 / mo and thousands in labor for data entry.

- Then, you've got to worry about your local regulators.  Let's say the county commission decides to rescind your permit to grow marijuana because they have a come to Jesus moment.  You're fucked.

- And that is just the tip of the iceberg.  It is literally THE hardest industry to make a living in.  If someone can make money in the WA I502 recreational marijuana system, they really know what the fuck they're doing.

- Oh, and everybody thinks they grow good dope.  Very few can actually pull it off, especially in a mass-production environment.

Interesting info.  Reminds me of how everyone things they can own a wine vineyward especially SillyCon Valley billionaires who want to retire and become big wine growers.  Billionaires buy vineyards to make high end vinegar.

Creating a craft beer sports bar looks pretty easy compared to being a legal pot farmer.

I am curious if all this pot legalization has hurt beer and wine sales.

Thanks.  Just from personal experience, marijuana reduces my interest in alcohol.  I'm guessing that is true for most people.  But, as the population continues to swell, I'm sure you'll see demand for craft beers continue to pick up regardless of competition from pot .. in times like this, people need a break from sobriety.

In college I had a good conversation with an older guy who'd been in the business for a while. Apparently, an eighth had been around the same for almost two decades (~60, low as 50 for friends) and its only getting more potent. Thats price deflation over that term. From a quick google search:

"Since 1972, ElSohly says, the average THC content of marijuana has soared from less than 1% to 3 to 4% in the 1990s, to nearly 13% today."

A dime on the east coast would be a half gram (never heard of someone buying that little) so its still more expensive / THC content if your number is right but not nearly as bad as it sounds. Take out inflation and I wouldnt be surprised if the cost was the same.

I was a user long ago. It depends on your equipment and your smoking practices. With my bong, I could stretch an ounce a looong time (over a month). I had a one hit bowl and a larger party bowl. Did not break out the party bowl much. My friends would come to my place when they were out. I would let them have 1, mind you, 1 bowl, toked up my way, and they knew it. They had to follow my instructions or they could not toke again at my place. I aways had it, because I did not waste it. I would also save resin, scrape seeds and stems, I was the queen of cheap. But I could always get you high. Hardly ever wasted it on a joint.

My friends also shared. That too helped me stretch it. The other thing is, if you are a chick, you should be able to get it for free more often than not. I mean free.

Mind you, that is not to say that weed was not provided by a committed partner, ever, in my past (it was), but men will share with you just to go out with you. Don't have to "put out." Just go out. It's a trip, some men will get status being seen with you. That is all they want. Others, yeah, they are hoping things develop, but meanwhile everyone is having fun. No harm. Never led anyone on, always told them where they stood. They still want to take you out, share their resources, no harm. Mind you this is me in my teens and early 20s. I would be really different if I was on the market now. But it was fun.

This chick does. I have been called out for it by feminists. I am what you call a sex positive feminist. I do not view my sexuality as a form of oppression, but rather a potential site of empowerment.

What I don't like about the standard feminist take on this is that they assume that we (chicks) have "false consciousness" and only if we see it the way they do (that we are oppressed by men through sexuality) do we have a mature class consciousness. Pisses me off. Very nanny state. Meet the new objectification, same as the old objectification. You are not feminist if...it serves as a way to control folks.

For me, a mature feminism means that both men and women are free to express themselves how they are comfortable with and they need not be constrained by gender. I am okay with men in drag if that is what they want to do, I will even help with the makeup (its fun). BUT THAT MEANS IF A WOMAN WANTS TO ENACT TRADITIONAL FEMININE VALUES, SHE SHOULD NOT GET GRIEF FOR IT. And if she likes being a "chick" that should be okay too.

Hope that cleared that up.

i remember back in  the late 70's down where the banana boats docked, you could get a non pleated baggy full of buds broken off at the length of the bag, completely full of lambsbreath from jamaica.  we were use to columbian or gold columbian being the primo, one decent joint of this stuff would get 20 people stoned.  cost 40.00. after two good tokes it was like you smoked 3 joints of gold bo all by yourself.

those were the days, charleston sc in the 70's

I don't like today's pot. I still enjoy smoking a joint with a good cocktail but the shit today is toos stong to do that. It's anti-social! One hit wonder weed doesn't lend itself to a slow evening of getting baked.

Totally agreed, but high THC numbers are what's selling right now, so that's what growers grow .. plus people are developing crazy levels of tolerance.

I have several ounces of seed from the late 60's - early 70's.

Last time I was in Amsterdam, I was told (at the Museum), that even though the survival rate was quite low, these were worth $$$$ because they had not been interbred.

The breeders are looking for pure stock, which is long gone.

Hell, I only want to grow from the best seedstock just to see how good I can be.  I am a horticulturist and I love plants.  I have not fired up in almost two years but that will change.  So much for the addiction and "gateway drug" bullshit.  I would love to fire up and chill out but not yet.  I am proving a point.  I like getting high and studying something, like say, my numismatic coins or etymology.  I also like reading up on the history that the research results tell me.  Going fishing or gardening is far more enhanced by some smoke for me.  I won't answer my phone or anything like that.  Anything more than two hits on a pinch-hitter is bullshit.

All the same, if you don't like it then don't do it and then don't preach to me about how I am a drug addict.

California Proposition 19, AKA: Regulate, Control & Tax Cannabis Act, was defeated by the California voters on November 2, 2010.  The final vote was Yes: 4,597,684  No: 5,291,583

It was not susprising that most of the conservative counties voted against legalizing marijuana, but what was surprising was that counties in the "Emerald Triangle," such as Humbolt and Mendocino, known far and wide for producing some of the finest cannabis in the world, and home to countless hippies, voted against legalization.  The growers knew it would lower the value of their product so they put the word out to vote no.

i remember a blind older college student at a college in north carolina that had glaucoma. he legally got weed. sent to him by the federal government in a tin box.  they were machine rolled in blue paper and had a serial number on each of them.

i hit them a couple of times and it was primo good stuff, tasted great and gave a great buzz.

the government was growing it somewhere along the mississippi i think it was missouri. that was about 79, for the time it was extra primo good stuff,  as cheech and chong sang, no stems no seeds that you don't need, government blue is bad assed weed.

Haven't been into street weed since college.  OMG that was over 40 years ago!  But now that it is legal in WA I have tried a few flower strains in a PAX vape and some insanely potent liquid in a Vuber pen vape.  Vaporizing is mild on your lungs - I can't take actual smoke anymore and I don't want a big ass bong on hand to invite questions from, well, nevermind...  If your lungs can't handle burnt weed, vape it.

It's interesting to observe the clientele in the weed shops - they are of all ages, and there's plenty of white hair like mine..!

I have to say, what we could get back in the 60's was rather like catnip and oregano compared to this new 'government weed'... One mere toke of top quality 'government weed' is WAAAAAY plenty.  If you dare more, it will blow your freaking socks off.  It is not like anything I've known short of pure psychedelics. Of course, after all these years I've become a lightweight... but just sayin'.

I'm no shill for WA tourism, but y'all might want to plan your summer vacations accordingly...

Evidently you were never in Vietnam or Thailand during the war.   Key of  thai stick -35 bucks, all flowers.   Also OJ  (opium cured).  The Sergeants Association of the USAF helped the girls orphanage outside of DaNang.   Coincidentally those girls bagged the weed for us.

True Story.    not to mention the Friday night  T-39 flights from Laos by Air America to bring in the ''horse'.  95 percent pure.

One guy in supply send the smack to his GF in NYC, via mail.  packed in envelope and wrote  ''Do not bend , photos enclosed''.   He bought new Datsun 240Z  CASH.

In the late 60's I was pulled over in Chicago for going too slow.  (20 mph in 70 zone).  Cops asked me ''have you been smoking pot''?   I said ''Pot? I wouldn't touch that shit'' in my best southern redneck accent.   He said what are you doing in  Chicago with Nebraska plates.  I told him looking for my cousins house.  Cops says ''Whats your cousins name?.  I told him  Wendell Kistler,  He says ''I know him, follow me I will show you where he lives''.   This is a true story.   I was laughing my ass off while following. still rushing from the weed.  I had short hair and was in the USAF at the time.

Recently got some very good stuff for $1300/lb. It smells heavenly, sticky fingers, I cut it with scissors to fit in my small pipe and it's almost like cutting hash. Very good quality couch lock stuff. I would guess this stuff came out of CO. Fresh, not compacted in a press like the South of the border imported weed. Also had some sensi-bud for about the same price, a little lower iirc. $300/oz in TX? Laughable. Someone's dealer is taking advantage.

An oz/month keeps the wife and I happy.

I scored  a piece of hash in Thailand back in 1970.  2 dollars,  it was so perfumy you could smell it a mile away.  Texture of chocolate fudge deep dark inside and light brown on the outside.,  one sliver would get you almost tripping for 12 hours.

This photo was taken in 2003 in Bangui, Central African Republic.  Bought this bag of weed for 5 US dollars.  When the kid brought me the weed I looked at him incredulously.  He said ''Whats the matter, Mister, is 5 dollars too much''?

Next day we flew their President  and his entourage to Niger for a conference. Me, the Captain, and Co-pilot were still rushing at takeoff.  What a rush.  LOL

While at DaNang AB Vietnam 71-72  we had a room in the barracks made into a kind of opium den with blacklights etc,  (F-4 avionics troops).

We got a big water pipe with 6 hoses and fitted them with oxygen masks from aircraft.

One lid fit into the bowl. Of course lots of weed bits and pieces all around the floor.

One day we had monthly inspection by Squadron Commmander (Colonel).

He left us a note  ''' I will let this slide but for heavens sake clean up a little and don't make it so obvious''.

He knew that if he was to bust everyone he would have NO ONE to fix the aircraft.

We had an F-4 jock that used to take bong it before a flight and drop his bombs into the East China Sea.  They DID bust him.,

Shows there are still good people in the world.
