George Soros Warns "No Exaggeration" That China-US On "Threshold Of World War 3"
While admitting that reaching agreement between the two countries will be difficult to achieve, George Soros - speaking at The World Bank's Bretton Woods conference this week - warned that unless the U.S. makes 'major concessions' and allows China's currency to join the IMF's basket of currencies, "there is a real danger China will align itself with Russia politically and militarily, and then the threat of world war becomes real."
Much in global geopolitics depends on the health and trajectory of the Chinese economy, was the undertone of George Soros' comments as he spoke this week, but as MarketWatch reports,
Billionaire investor George Soros said flatly that he’s concerned about the possibility of another world war.

If China’s efforts to transition to a domestic-demand led economy from an export engine falter, there is a “likelihood” that China’s rulers would foster an external conflict to keep the country together and hold on to power.

To avoid this scenario, Soros called on the U.S. to make a “major concession” and allow China’s currency to join the International Monetary Fund’s basket of currencies. This would make the yuan a potential rival to the dollar as a global reserve currency.
In return, China would have to make similar major concessions to reform its economy, such as accepting the rule of law, Soros said.
Allowing China’s yuan to be a market currency would create “a binding connection” between the two systems.
An agreement along these lines will be difficult to achieve, Soros said, but the alternative is so unpleasant.
“Without it, there is a real danger that China will align itself with Russia politically and militarily, and then the threat of third world war becomes real, so it is worth trying.”
And while on the topic, Soros also spoke recently, as ValueWalk notes, on the situation in Europe...
“The European Union was a very inspiring idea to people like me,” he commented, reflecting back to when EU economies were more balanced. “It was the embodiment of the idea of an open society, like minded countries getting together and sacrificing part of their sovereignty for the common good. It was meant to be a voluntary association of equals.”
Soros continued to say: “Because of the Euro crisis, [the E.U.] has been transformed into something radically different.” He also emphasized that over time two different classes of countries have evolved: creditors and debtors. “The debtors had difficulty meeting their obligations and this put the creditors in charge. They (the creditors) set the rules and made it very difficult for the debtors to exit their inferior status. A voluntary association of equals turned into an involuntary association of un-equals.”
While avoiding making predictions, on Greece Soros noted: “Greece is a poisonous situation. All sides have made a lot of mistakes, and there is a lot of hostility, a lot of negative sentiments…Both sides are willing to hurt the other side even if it hurts them.”

I get that he is a believer in a utopian globe where everyone works together for the 'common good', and that if we just had the right design, we could achieve Shangri'la. Point well taken, but I think you're confusing the U.S. and China with rational stakeholders. Weak and out of shape, the U.S. is determined to hold on to #1 spot while China is ready to flex its new financial/military/diplomatic muscles. There is trouble up ahead between these two....just not sure if this is (yet) the time for the sparks (though hopefully not nuclear-tipped missiles) to fly.

As for the military might of the US : it is clear that until the SHTF, what matters most is the perception that opponents have of your military might, because it is largely the perception that deters or not. So it is axiomatic that any great power will exaggerate its own military power. The only question is how much.
As long as there is no doubt about who is militarily superior, war between states will largely be avoided imho. ( for example, chances of a war between Belgium and US are pretty much zero, for other reasons as well of course ) When that is not so clear, the risk of war becomes much bigger.
With China's ascent and US's decline as the dominant world system narratives of the day, we can be worried.
I do not know much about it at all, but it seems US aircraft carriers are sitting ducks close to the coast of a great power like China, waiting to be taken out.

I think there's a lot of truth to what you say... But mostly with regards to the the nature of picking through cadavers (a hobby which 'these people' have cultivated as a lifestyle for decades & indeed centuries)...
I was living in Europe when the Euro came into operation. It was a terrific windfall for me because I'd made dollar investments (into Europe), when the dollar was stronger & proceeded to see the dollar value of those increase as the Euro became strong for awhile...
At that time, I kind of 'drank the kool-aid' that the Euro was working (but never really went full retard Giselle Bundchen, who, at one point, demanded her fees in Euros... LOL ~ Actually, when I heard about that, I KNEW the Euro had top ticked & in fact, started shuffling illiquid assets back to dollars)... I wasn't a TRADER, but I saw the writing on the wall & as I described before, this was mostly just 'windfall' 4 me, though I hustled things around at times...
But back to the story... I fully believed (ALL ALONG), that the Euro was sort of a TEST TUBE BABY for an eventual SINGLE WORLD CURRENCY... In short, testing to see whether it was viable or not... I don't think anyone really knew (even Soros types), what would eventually transpire...
The fact of the matter is that it's easy to get people to adjust to a new currency (I can't say they're thrilled by it, but all life is about to most people is having a few coins in their pocket to buy some bread & smokes)... But it's a completely fucked up matter when you apply soverign debt to the equation of a single currency and especially a single controlling entity (which is truly a case of foxes guarding henhouses)...
In summary ~ 2 things:
1. I have to agree with you, because I'm sure the only ones who even thought about the NEGATIVES (like the soverign debt fiatscos), are the Soros of the world...
2. Now ~ that the EURO 'template' has proven to be an abject failure (except to enrich a few & enslave & impoverish the rest)... Applying that SAME TEMPLATE worldwide must make them jizz in their pants...

What is there to lose if the US Dollar becomes one of a handful of currencies -gold included- upon which international exchanges are measured? Nothing! The US Dollar will still be regarded as a safe currency, just not the only one.
I would take this further:
None of the Asean countries have the will nor the means to develop the South China Sea. Let China do it. Meanwhile there is enough opportunity for Korea and Japan to explore and extract resources from the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan. And fishing fleets can work to provide food for all the countries nearby.
