Thousands Gather At McDonald's Headquarters Demanding Higher Wages

Tyler Durden's picture

On Wednesday, we got a look at a leaked WalMart training video in which a series of “associates” (read: hilariously bad actors) patiently explain to new hires why unions are bad.

The video is especially relevant in light of the retailer’s recent battle with intractable “clogs and leaks” at several locations and if “clogs and leaks” actually means “unions” then it makes a lot of sense why the company closed its Pico Rivera location because if ever there were a WalMart store that suffered from stubborn “plumbing problems” then Pico Rivera is surely it.

But WalMart isn’t the only giant multinational that just can’t seem to get the “plumbing” fixed because as you’ll see below, legions of McDonald’s workers descended on the company's Illinois headquarters ahead of the annual shareholders meeting in an effort to show the company that they are most assuredly not “Lovin’ It.”

Here’s The Chicago Tribune:

Potesters hailing from as far away as Kansas City and New York City participated in a demonstration at McDonald's Oak Brook headquarters Wednesday, urging that hourly wages for the burger giant's front-line workers be increased to $15 an hour.

Darrell Miller, 35, who said he left Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday night on a bus filled with other protesters, said he decided to join in because it was his dream to march like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and fight for freedom.

His job at McDonald's, he said, gives him no control over his life or his independence because the $7.75 an hour he is paid barely covers his bills.

Protesters, who had gathered about a half a mile west of the headquarters, slowly marched toward McDonald's campus shortly after noon. At the head of the long line of protesters several held aloft a banner: "McDonald's $15 and union rights, not food stamps. #fightfor15."

The Oak Brook police estimated the crowd at about 2,000 people. Organizers had projected that upward of 5,000 would participate in the demonstration.

Before demonstrations began, Heidi Barker, a McDonald's spokeswoman, said the company does not have the power to raise wages of workers employed by its franchisees. She said it's possible that franchisees will follow the company's lead and also raise wages of front-line workers.

McDonald's will increase starting wages to $1 above the local minimum at 1,500 company-owned restaurants effective July 1. While that increase affects more than 90,000 employees, those restaurants account for about one-tenth of McDonald's restaurants across the country. Franchisees, which operate the majority of U.S. restaurants, make their own decisions on pay and benefits. Overall, about 750,000 employees work at company- and franchisee-owned McDonald's restaurants in the U.S.

Given that McDonald's can play the "it's up to the franchise owners" card when it comes to wages, one approach to dealing with rising wages if you're the company is simply to decrease the number of company-owned locations, which is why we aren't surprised to learn that the company is refranchising thousands of stores:

  • MCDONALD'S WILL REFRANCHISE 3,500 STORES GLOBALLY BY 2018
  • MCDONALD'S SAYS MOVING TO 90% FROM 81% FRANCHISED GLOBALLY

And while the company's employees may not be getting rich, its shareholders sure are, and it's all courtesy of central banks. McDonald's completed its largest reverse Yankee bond sale in history this week, raising $2 billion, money which, as you can see below, will be promptly used to buy back stock, enriching shareholders and management even as workers strike for higher wages. In other words: not only is the QE 'wealth effect' not working, the exact opposite is happening. Central bank policy is serving, once again, to exacerbate the wealth divide:

  • MCDONALD'S SEES RETURNING $8B-$9B TO SHAREHOLDERS THIS YR

Of course Illinois’ fiscal nightmare isn’t helping matters for workers in the state, as budget cuts aimed at closing a $6 billion funding gap are driving up prices for services:

Adriana Alvarez said that since joining the Fight for $15 campaign last year, her hourly wages at a McDonald's on Cicero Avenue jumped by $1.75 an hour, reaching $10.50 an hour. But the single mother of a 3-year-old boy said her costs also continue to go up and state budget cuts affected a child care subsidy she receives.

And according to union officials, the battle for higher burger flipping wages is just getting started:

Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, called on McDonald's to sit with a union at a national bargaining table and put some of its profits into the pockets of workers.

"Even when we get $15 and a union we will keep fighting," Henry said.

We suspect it might be just a matter of time before McDonald's and some McDonald's franchisees decide that now might be a good time to fix the plumbing at certain locations.

*  *  *

A reminder to McDonald's: WalMart suggests you discourage this kind of thing early on by showing this to new hires...

This will just bring about more automated processes thus hiring about 1/5 of the current staff just to make sure all the automation runs smoothly.  Wage inflation pop then an employment drop.

Fighting for freedom like MLK????  hahaha

Freedom:   Making Big Macs for fat-asses...

I hope McDonalds meets their demands...I really do.  Can't wait for everyone to experience those "unintended consequences" when a Happy Meal costs 15 bucks, McDonald's loses massive profits, stocks tank, stores close all over the country, thousands laid off even though for a very short period of time they were paid 15 bucks an hour...and then it all comes crashing down.

Thats what happens when you are scared to death to raise your prices.  All these big corporations think about is their top line---but an increase in revenue doesn't necessarily translate into an increase in PROFIT.  So, they constantly find ways to cut cost in food, and that is a direct translation to lower food quality.

They're protesting McDonalds for paying shit wages for a shit job that used to be done by teenagers.  They should be asking why they're in that situation instead.

Save_America1st's picture

you bet they should ask that, but the only people around them they could ask either don't really know or will lie to them and whip them up in a frenzy like our Community Agitator In Chief...knowing the truth is just not the mentality anymore.  They don't care about the cause...the Fed Res fiat money printing...taking America off of Constitutional silver and gold money...inflating the fuck out of everything by devaluing the dollar now by 98% from what it was worth 100 years ago...etc. etc. etc.

They have no concept of this.  Fuck...I have a hard enough time teaching these concepts to highly educated people who make lots of fiat, ya know?

Talk to someone in their 60's or older now about sound money and how when they were a kid they might make 25 or 50 cents an hour (and that was real silver coinage), and how far that little bit of money could get you back then and you bet they know what's going on today.

Talk to someone about those concepts who are between 15 and 55 or so and you get blank stares.  But somehow those same people know how to say some bullshit back at you like, "you can't eat gold".

Now how they all somehow learned that phrase yet haven't learned anything logical or historically true is totally fucking beyond me.  lol  But they all sure like to say shit like that.

Drives me fucking crazy...so I have pretty much given up trying anymore.  So okay...they win.  I'm the big dummy stackin' phyzz and supplies I guess.

Not 1% of any age bracket knows this. Believe me, I talk with more senior people than most.  They are just as clueless as the rest, but with more fake patriotism.

Sure they know about the depression and "a loaf of bread cost a nickel" but they have no clue about our money system.

My dad, when we talked about how the Mint wanted to do away with the penny.  "That's cause it costs too much to make them."

I asked him if he ever thought WHY they cost too much. Nothing.

This is a guy who GOT ME into silver coinage, specifically junk silver.

Nobody knows, that is why it still goes on.

"I wish we'd go back to gold and silver coin for transactions."

But he's an odd duck.  He got arrested once in his life, and when I brought up keeping quiet, his response was amusing:

"I didn't tell those motherfuckers anything!"

People never ask why teenagers once held so many of these jobs after school and summers.  The adults had better opportunities and pay elsewhere.  And the adults could accomplish something for themselves with those better opportunities and pay. Those adults saw a benefit to their work and were self sufficient even though only semi skilled.  (No, not all adults.  There has always been a group who were unmotivated.)

Not only were the teenagers doing the work they could pay for a chunk of college with what they saved. Or pay for their own car or truck.

The adults work these jobs full time now and still have no chance of making ends meet.  Better opportunities are hard to find and even those no longer pay enough.  So they learn to work the system to get by.  And why do hard work if it leads no where or does not provide an avenue or resource to take the next step upward?  Thing is, this problem now extends past the unskilled and semi skilled and into the more skilled trades.  People used to have middle class type lives framing houses.  No more where I live.

It has been pulled right out from under us and no one see it.

Approx 80% of the workforce in the 50's was basically considered "low skilled." Guess what? They were still able to afford cars, houses and a family. And that was with one breadwinner in the house. Yeah let's make fun of the poor people who can barely get a living wage and not the dickheads who have created inflation, outsourced all our jobs, allowed illegal aliens to kill any sort of bragaining power that low skilled workers have, that have allowed cheap, shitty imports to flood the country... etc. etc. etc. Nah, that takes too much thinking power. Automation is coming their way fast.  Wage increases will just make it happen faster.  Not too much in a fast food place that can't be replaced by a robot or automated machine.  And, hey, at zero % interest, they can payoff at some point.

There are going to be a lot of professions that disappear in the coming years - and probably faster than most expect.  Driverless cars and trucks exist now.  How long until taxi drivers are extinct?  How long until it impacts Uber?  How many young adults living in cities will be buying cars when they can hire a driverless taxi that will get them there faster, cheaper and let them text at the same time?  There is a lot of automation headed down the pike.

If only for every layoff the salary saved was distributed to others. Unfortunately, most low wage places run at optimum capacity, hiring only those that are needed. They have no idle employees. They're not the public sector. Cut staff and profits will decline more than the net sum of salaries.

If these companies had second thoughts about expediting automation, I'm sure those concerns are completely gone now.

A few years ago, the carpenter's union actually did go to a temp agency and hire workers to protest places that had work done by non-union agencies.  Some fuckwit would fly out from CA every week to organize the protests, and then he'd treat the temp owrkers like shit.  Fucking hypocrite.  They'd also get some local members of the union out there when they could, and it kind of fizzled out when a day care center was protested because the owners of the building, (not the daycare center, they were leasing,) hired a non-union company to do the work, and a daycare worker got cussed out by a couple of the protesters while she was getting the mail, and it hit the news.

What was the price of a beer burger in 1960 ~ 25 - 35 cent what was the mimimum wage 50 - 1.25 and hour. Always at least twice the cost of a single plain burger. Thats if you want proper accounting. So yes printing money is a bad thing for those who get the money last.
We once had a real economy now we have a snake eating its own tail.

That would require skills beyond their current jobs, and most other employment opportunities require a realistic world view that understands that extortion via union will only mean loss of employment for many, higher wages for some, with a healthy side of automation.

I want video of someone asking "So why is your labor worth more than, say, anyone else making minimum wage, performing the same work?"

Wrong answers include, but are not limited to: because McDonalds makes so much money! (which says nothing about the relative value in the market place of your skills)

Not to mention, increase the minimum wage to $15.  Congrats, that might work ceteris paribus, but things are not held equal in the real world.  You'll still be at the bottom of the wage bracket, except everyone else with real skills will be demanding more money since now burger flippers with low-skill jobs make so much.

Skilless Murikans wanting something for nothing. No thinking ability,,, don't understand that prices will just rise and next they'll be screaming for twenty bucks, then twenty five and so on. Then you have those making 15 now wanting 20, 30 and so on.

But hey,,, what do you expect from the same bunch who let the production be exported, think operating a telephone is high tech and have not a clue on how economics plays out. Why do they think today it's call trained rather than skilled or educamacated. One trains monkeys and dogs.

"No thinking ability,,,"

That's on purpose. The public schools (and society in general) have been purposefully dumbed down so that nobody develops critical thinking skills. Unless you have parents or mentors who teach you, or are a driven self-starter, you are going to end up being the type of stupid fuck that protests in front of the McDonald's HQ.

Our education is not to create a desire to learn, but to simply memorize and puke back up on command. A low powered computing machine that behaves more like a hard drive than a logic processor. Productivity through massive redundancy. Watch these people work and it reminds of the joke about how many does it take to screw in a light bulb. In this case...a lot.

Automation will be the response. You already see all the 'self service' checkouts at big box stores. Imagine the theft that they enable, yet it's still better than paying wages and benefits to cashiers.

It won't be long before you are punching in your order at the Mickey D's counter yourself, or doing it on your iphone before you even arrive. I haven't been to one in a while but I don't think they even actually grill the burgers anymore? Anyway, all easily automated.

All these these people believeing they are worth $15 an hour plus benefits better be able to back that up and find someone willing to pay them that, and soon. If they were smart, they'd be learning a trade, that's where they can make a great wage.

Same here; the last time I had McD, I felt "out of sorts" for two days. It has to be all the chemical shit they put in their food. These days, when I gotta have a fast food burger, it's the double bacon cheese from Sonic. Tastier, and I don't feel like I have toxic sludge in my veins afterwards.

That's because of the projectile diarrhea you get 30 minutes after you eat it. It doesn't hang around long enough to stop your heart.
