Where The Rich Buy Their College Degrees

Tyler Durden's picture

Pakistan

When it comes to world traveling, nothing beats the sights and sounds of Pakistan. While traveling through the country, you might stumble upon a Navy SEAL mission to kill the most wanted terrorist in the world, get acid thrown in your face, or earn a diploma from a fake American university. One person from Saudi Arabia paid $400,000 for various degrees and certificates. Generally, counterfeiting signals strong demand for a product. However, with less and less people with college degrees actually getting jobs, eventually, you'll look at the rich Saudi who blew $400,000 on a fake degree and the unemployed American graduate and wonder, "What's the difference?"

As The Daily Mail reports:

A Karachi-based IT company, Axact, has been accused by software agencies of operating 370 bogus institutions. The company's fake education empire encompasses hundreds of high-schools and universities with mostly American names. At least 370 fictitious high-schools and universities operated by Axact were discovered by an American media group. The firm, with a team of over 2,000 employees who are mostly educated youth in Karachi, creates fraudulent websites, mainly using deceptive tactics.

One of the "schools" is Barkley University:

Barkley University

The American version of Axact is Corinthian Colleges. The "Heald" branch gamed its job placement numbers to attract students. The LA Times reported:

Heald considered graduates "placed" in jobs they had well before they enrolled. At Heald's Honolulu campus, staff members considered a 2011 accounting graduate to be "employed in the field" based on a food service job she had at Taco Bell since 2006.

Everest College, another Corinthian subsidiary, created fake jobs to boost their employment numbers. The college paid contractors $2,000 to hire graduates for 30 days. Corinthian filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, and 78,000 students are requesting loan forgiveness from the federal government.

Apparently, part of the secret Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is exporting our educational fraud to Pakistan. And thanks to free trade, consumers around the world can benefit.

Here's one guy who wasn't buying degrees from the Pakistanis:

No Degree Lambo

Of course.  Hillary will be getting her Ph.D in Presidential Concepts and Theory from the same place W did and the name that need not be spoken.  Yet we are all up in arms about some country whom we would have guessed was New Jersey or California had they not put the nice little words on the map.

I mean, what would you do if you were Pakistani?  You can't go outside on most clear days for fear of... you know... may as well chill, smoke some hash and fire up your laptop and laser printer.

Yes, let's let high school drop outs design buildings, bridges, etc, and maybe be doctors as well.

I don't mind people shitting on women's studies degrees, but the overall hatred for higher education here is absurd.

"I Call You My Base" - Dubya. There's a great example of a real Harvard MBA and Yale degree yeah?

And someone with a fake CE degree could do no worse that the MIT, RPI, or Purdue guy who designed Bldg. 7 that collapsed as soon as the toaster caught on fire.  Same for N. and S. towers.

I wonder would a fake engineer have made the New Orleans levees 18" too short like them real LSU cats did... (sorry LSU, probably was Tulane).

Doctors?  Ever been to a f'kin US hospital and been at the mercy of a "real" doctor?  LOL... don't get me started.

Can't be no worse with fake degrees.  Yeah, let 'em build the bridges. By the way, let'em repair the railroads in PA.

Buddy, as an intellectual snob with real degrees (plural) from Global Top 50 Universities, I am NOT against higher education. Quite the opposite, in fact: I've mentioned several times that if there is an 'Agenda 21', that it should use filter criteria of IQ and EQ, to take out the dumb, warped and the cruel.

My point was (do I have to spell it out?) that...

(A) Working at a 'real' or 'reputable' company means jack shit, given the felonious companies cited,

(B) Going to Harva'd clearly is no assurance that its students are truly top-shelf brains.

(C) Given A and B, it is very ironic that we are making fun of foreign degree mills, when there are plenty of them right here in USSA. Univ. of Phoenix, anyone?

I concur with the Captain.

I'd say, get rid of NCAA "Scholarships" as well.  I don't like seeing dumbasses on the Pre-game Lineup with Shit-eating grins boasting about Majoring in "General Studies".   Send the Pro Hopefuls directly to Semi-Pro Leagues.

If they want to "play", they need to study.  I'd be open for "extended matriculation programs" for those within 12 Months of an Olympics Run; but that's about it.

That being said, I've met some good Men and Women who were great Scholar Athletes at my Alma Mater.  Being a Service Academy, we (naturally) had a higher "Athletes/Physically Fit Persons per Capita" Headcount on our "Campus" than any Geek School.  Still, after reviewing more cases where the SATs of recruited athletes (and some minorites) continue to weigh down the "Averages", I'd rather see my Alma Mater scratch lowering the standards (read, Math SATs and IQ) for any Sports Hopeful( and Minority - they can never find enough Qualified Negro or Hispanic Officer Candidate to fit the National Population Representation - the School Recruiters aren't looking hard enough); and have the School play/join the Ivy League and other Geek Schools rather than bump heads with Regional NFL Mills.

Yes, that would mean dropping the "General Engineering" and "Physical Science" Majors.  I'd drop the Humanities "Bull" Majors as well - make Bull Courses  "Electives for All", ROTFL - I don't want to persistently hear about fracking History or English Majors making it to Nuke or Flight School, only to fail out - or  "flushed out" as whom we call "Nuclear Waste"(who are sent to Surface Ships with a chance to redeem themselves) or (I don't recall the Aviator Failure Nickname - since the end of the Iraq War for the Military(not for the Mercs), they were called,) "Recently Discharged Civilians".  Again a waste of Tax Payers' Dollars.  I'd say put the Flight School Washouts on Ships, or send them off to the Marines.

Mids' Curriculae qualify for Minors in both General Engineeing and Naval Science for crying out loud.  If one can't hack the Defined Majors, he/she shouldn't be there.  We've a Tech Intensive Fleet; and it's not going to get simplified anytime soon.

That's my Beef.

The hatred of ALL Corporations and ALL CEOs is also pretty strange.

The fact that you admit or purport that we need Corporations and also CEO's for each and every aspect of our lives (even bathing!) shows how they have imposed themselves disproportionately on society to our disadvantage.  Sure, we need them now, but it shouldn't be.

Also, no one said all corporations are bad.  Korean Samsung for example are good.  They keep Apple in check and free the world from Steve Job's tyranny.

It's not that all higher education is bullshit, it's that so many people get useless BS degrees because they're brainwashed into thinking that they have to have a college degree to get by.  If somebody wants to go to college to actually learn, then good for them.  Even in a post collapse wolrd, having some knowledge of things like physics and biology would be useful.  If you actually enjoy history, and understand that the best job that you can hope for is either being a professor, or a host on some TV show that most people won't watch, then I say great.  But the vast majority think that a magic little peice of paper called a diploma is going to land them a high paying job, and it's all being subsidized on the consumer end by the government.  This locks people who may have a genuine interest in learning out or forces them into student loans, which are pure evil, all so that kids who don't know shit from shinola can get one of the less than useful degrees and not learn a lot in the process.

The term higher education is an incorrect use of the language. The only thing higher about it is what they smoke between classes. An eighth grade grad in 1920 would absolutely demolish most Bachelor of Science Grads today.

If you are attending using government or corporate tuition, your guaranteed a 'C' to keep the funding rolling in. I've worked with Electrical Engineers who thought Ohm's Law was a Federal Statute.

Come to think about it these types of fake degrees are along the lines of ROI levels similar to majority of US universities meaning almost zero.

After forced educational egalitarianism, pushed by US ruling elites scared to death of evaporation of their authority, power, privileges and stolen wealth during cold war, only to save them from demise, now old times are coming back when retarded Ivy league-rs went to school to meet their fellow elitists with whom they suppose to continue robbing blind American nations. No strangers were allowed there.

Now the charade is over and true intentions are on display namely to dummyfy and pauperize US population as in good old days.

Interesting take on what education system in US as well as in other nations is truly for I found in:

Beautiful 'Barkley University' offers advanced degrees in sports gambling, NCAA special needs tutoring, broadcast sports/memorabilia, and remedial golfing majors.

Barkley University guarantees their graduates will be fully capable of "jawboning" their way into the professional world.

In the IT industry, "coding interviews" prevent this from being a problem.

Try 'fewer and fewer people' and then review the grammar rules for the use of 'less' and fewer' before you upset my delicate sensibilities with your 4th grade usage of the English language again...shameful for a professional writer.....we grammar snobs must be appeased.

It doesn't mean you're a grammar snob for such an outrage ('less' instead of 'fewer') to grate.

Years ago I knew an old American guy in his 70s. He had purchased an official "degree" from a US diploma mill based in California.  With his "doctorate" he moved to Thailand for a teaching job at a university there.  He was getting all kinds of pussy at that late stage of his life.   The diploma was probably the best investment he'd ever made.

You don't need to be in your 70's with any academic credentials to get pussy in Thailand...

I respect some schools, but the schools of business of ecnomics is just bullshit waste of time. I dont regret I took it, because in my country, I actually got paid to study it.
However if I consider what i "learned" in micro and macro economics, the only guy being happy must be Paul Krookman who sold all all his bullshit books.

I haven't needed to for quite some time but when I was first starting out I padded the living hell out of my resume.  According to a book I read "machiavellian guide to getting the job" (or something to that affect) the majority of fortune 500 hires do.  It worked flawlessly.  Now I often have to have pretty serious federal background checks so I wouldn't even consider it.  I never exaggerated about education just everything else.   =)

I have never been fired or been accused of poor performance and the way I see it corporations lie all of the time so I have no guilt for my transgressions.  I really don't miss sweating bullets during interviews as I worried that some savvy human resources chick would discover my egregious exaggerations.

Those Pkaistani Universities are a bit more extreme than some western univerities that have given MBA to  George Bush of the members of the Royal Families . So we appear to be scandalized for some person paying 400 thousands for a fake university degree  but we are not upset with some western leaders often glaring ignorance and incompetence .At time ,people from the public , have the impression that the fantastic piece of paper those leaders have has been obtained by purchasing a packet of pop corn  .  In the western world  some of the  known universities are corrupted and practice a certain amount of discrimination in favor of members of the TRIBE and some other  minorities but that's another story , The fact remains that having money and connections help tremedously in achieving a glorious piece  of paper .

Have a look at Obongo with school records disappeared , George Bush with an MBA , Prince Charles and other members of his family .

Everything and everyone in Pakistan is corrupt. Nobody will pay unless you get it up front.  They rip off anything they can. They'll sell you anything and call it anything.  Was I glad to get out of that place.

Yes, a dgree can be bought, but why geniune degree holders so often fail to prove their superiority ( which edege of competition the education should have provided). Higher education sadly,  has more intrest of mas propagating hollow academic degrees instead of tackling with more important real life issues .
