Our Crazy-Making Economy's Endgame: Festering Frustration Seeking An Outlet

The consequence of policies that exacerbate injustice, inequality and double-bind demands is a madness that will find a social and economic outlet somewhere, sometime.
We all know crazy-makers: people who make contradictory claims about reality, who say one thing and do another, who change their stories constantly to justify their own pursuit of self-interest, who demand the impossible of others while giving themselves unlimited excuses.
When they can't change reality to suit their purposes, they change their accounts of reality, and stick with the revised stories even when they are contradictory.
This describes the entire financial structure of the U.S.: crazy-making.
We all know the U.S. economy is diseased, and the Powers That Be are attempting to mask the sickness with contradictory accounts of reality.
To get ahead, you need a 4-year college diploma. But oops, the student debt you'll need to shoulder acts as a brake on getting ahead. And it turns out many of those who became debt-serfs to get a diploma actually end up in jobs that don't require a college education.
One reality--soaring student loan debt and diminishing value of the product, a college diploma--and two contradictory stories.
Systems theorist/anthropologist Gregory Bateson developed (with others) the concept of double bind, a psychological and social conflict in which contradictory demands generate a form of schizophrenia:
Unlike the usual no-win situation, the subject has difficulty in defining the exact nature of the paradoxical situation in which he or she is caught. The contradiction may be unexpressed in its immediate context and therefore invisible to external observers, only becoming evident when a prior communication is considered. Typically, a demand is imposed upon the subject by someone who they respect (such as a parent, teacher or doctor) but the demand itself is inherently impossible to fulfill because some broader context forbids it. For example, this situation arises when a person in a position of authority imposes two contradictory conditions but there exists an unspoken rule that one must never question authority.
Consider the schizophrenia-generating contradictions underpinning all U.S. economic policy.
We have to keep interest rates near-zero forever because the economy is weak, but the economy is strong--look at the low unemployment rate.
Well, which one is it? The official answer: both. The U.S. economy is both strong and weak at the same time. Interestingly, it's strong in terms of official measures of employment and jobs, but weak in financial terms.
This means there's nothing to be fixed for those working for a living, and everything to fix for financiers and banks, who are struggling due to weak financial fundamentals.
Meanwhile, corporate and financier profits are soaring to record levels and wages have stagnated for years. Wait a minute--weren't we just told that the financial fundamentals are weak, hence the need for zero interest rates for ever, and that job growth was strong?
These are internally inconsistent accounts of reality, i.e. crazy-making. Here are corporate profits--to the moon, baby:

Financialization has enriched the few with access to free money for financiers and those who own assets favored by the Fed and left everyone earning a living in the dust:
The Federal Reserve insists on maintaining this crazy-making double bind because the stock market depends on both conditions being true at the same time: the economy must be expanding so profits can loft ever higher, but the economy must also be weak and ill so the Fed will continue its policies of zero interest rates (ZIRP) and free money for financiers that have pumped trillions of dollars into "risk-on" assets like stocks.
If either of these contradictory conditions is erased, the stock market will tumble, as neither a weak economy nor zero interest rates (ZIRP) alone is sufficient to maintain the stock market's current sky-high valuations: profits must continue rising and rates must stay zero to enable carry trades, stock buy-backs, and all the other financial finagling that has driven stocks into the stratosphere.
In effect, the Fed and all the other organs of propaganda are telling the American public:don't you dare trust your lying eyes, ears, mind and awareness of rising insecurity--believe us.
Crazy-making contradictions generate free-floating anxiety, frustration and rage that then seek an outlet. The essence of official crazy-making is that dissent--protests that the official stories are patently false--is suppressed, marginalized or ridiculed. This is the purpose of a militarized Police State--to suppress anything that questions authority and that might undermine the schizophrenic policies and propaganda.
The endgame of crazy-making is that just about anything can suddenly become an outlet for the rage, frustration and anxiety that is the only possible output of schizophrenic policies. A minor civil disturbance morphs into a major riot; a limited melee at a sports event metastasizes into a destructive free-for-all, and a peaceful gathering turns ugly seemingly without cause.
These are expressions of the social and economic double-binds that are being imposed on the citizenry as the last-ditch method of retaining control of the nation's wealth and power--both of which are flowing into the hands of the few at the expense of the many.
You can impose crazy-making policies and propagandize a schizophrenic economy, but you can't bottle up the resulting frustration, anxiety and rage forever. Our oligarchic Elite reckons it can suppress anything and everything with Police State tactics, but the madness they have created will not be so easily controlled.
The consequence of policies that exacerbate injustice, inequality and double-bind demands is a madness that will find a social and economic outlet somewhere, sometime, and probably at a moment when few in the Power Elite expect it.

Let me be clear, there is not, nor will there ever be, an economic, fiscal, monetary, or political solution to scarcity.

When my fourth grade class of 44 students got a little unruly, I used to take great pleasure in telling them to get out their crayons and draw a picture of a square circle.
I would get those "deer in the headlight" looks from the little kids that we get from that Yellen-creature, and I would assure them they could use ANY COLOUR crayon and use either end of the crayon.
The request to draw a round square worked just as well. Baffled and confused, they calmed down.

Anything that violates this is a lie plain and simple, logically it can't be both at the same time in the same space. It applies to the most elemental things like a single molecule of Oxygen can not be both a gas and liquid at the same time. Politics continues to be so totally dominated by various old-fashioned religions and ideologies that it appears to be practically pointless to bother to point out what real problems have become! For several decades, I have been worrying about the ways that the society I was born into was based on presuming endless exponential growth, while that economic system was being backed up by weapons of mass destruction. Despite those worries being the primary factors that directed every important decision that I have made throughout my life, the only consistent theme has always been that the more I learned, the worse it got.
The established social pyramid systems, based upon thousands of years of history of being socially successful by backing up lies with violence, enabled the development during the last few centuries of the "Illuminati," or the international banksters, becoming the biggest bullies, who were able to apply the methods of organized crime to the political processes, in order to accomplish the supreme achievement of organized crime, which is that they can legally counterfeit the public "money" supply, while that fraud is enforced against everyone else by governments, run by politicians who are the banksters' puppets, who perform for the muppets, on stages set up by the mass media, which are also puppets for the banksters, the "Illuminati," or "oligarchic Power Elite," or whatever other label one wants to apply to the pyramidion people in the currently established social pyramid systems, based upon integrated systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, headed towards psychotic breakdowns, because being able to back up lies with violence never makes those lies stop being false.
The civilization we were born into was based upon thousands of years of the history of successful warfare being able to back up deceits with destruction, which became the basis for a political economy based on enforcing frauds. THE PROBLEM with doing that now is that, after the development of weapons of mass destruction, the rulings classes have becoming criminally insane, and so, attempting to join them, or to work for them, has become criminally insane. MEANWHILE, they already totally dominate society, by already claiming to own everything which can be owned, while their claims are backed by coercions, through the established systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, which are trapped in the vicious spirals of their own crazy-making contradictions, that being able to enforce frauds does NOT stop that frauds from still being false.
The root cause of the crazy-making schizophrenic economy is human history being based on successful warfare, which then morphed to become successful economics based on enforced frauds, DESPITE THAT BACKING UP LIES WITH VIOLENCE NEVER STOPS THOSE LIES FROM STILL BEING FALSE, but only drives society as a whole to become more psychotically insane. That situation is WAY WORSE than guys like Hugh-Smith ever present, because they do not go through deeper analyses of how and why natural selection pressures drove the development of artificial selection systems to become based upon the maximum possible deceits and frauds.
There is almost nothing but a core of organized crime, surrounded by controlled opposition groups. To "join the Illuminati" amounts to joining in with the dominate systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, which is the same as to work with, or for, any of the big banks, or the big corporations that grew up around those banks, via their vicious spirals of corrupting big governments to enforce those frauds.
Doing that means that one can then make more "money," but inside of fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems, so that successfully making more "money" inside of that system is to due to participating inside of runaway criminal insanities. Making more "money" inside of monetary systems based on enforced frauds suffers from the contradictions that enforcing frauds does NOT stop those frauds from still being false. Thus, the more "successful" one becomes at "joining the Illuminati" the more one facilitates the runaway criminal insanities that are controlling civilization, in ways whereby that civilization automatically becomes more psychotically out of touch with what it is really doing, both with respect to its social polarization, as well as with respect to its irreparable destruction of the natural world, because every economic decision is being made using the bent rubber rulers of fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems.
Although many articles on Zero Hedge superficially discuss the problems regarding "bad investments," those are actually orders of magnitude worse. Almost every article on Zero Hedge grossly understates what the problems are, and so, then grossly overstates what the "solutions" could be. It is almost impossible to fully comprehend the degree to which the civilization we were born into has become criminally insane, due to progress in physical science having nothing like that allowed to happen in political science.
The weapons of mass destruction have literally become trillions of times more powerful, and similarly the capacities for global electronic communications have also become literally trillions of time greater too. HOWEVER, those are primarily employed through the social pyramid systems based on the history of the social successfulness of backing up lies with violence, to become globalized electronic monkey money frauds, backed by the threat of force from apes with atomic bombs. While, at the same time, almost all of the publicly significant opposition to that continues to promote various sorts of old-fashioned religions and ideologies ...
Indeed, after I post this comment, I expect several, almost immediate down-votes, from people who have developed an automatic dislike for my point of view, presumably because they prefer to adhere to their favourite old-fashioned religions or ideologies. The established social pyramid systems are based upon a tiny minority, the banksters, Illuminati, or oligarchic Power Elites, etc., who have specialized in being dishonest, and backing that up with violence, while the vast majority of the rest of the population have adapted to that by becoming ignorant and afraid, and indeed, afraid of not continuing to be deliberately ignorant. The article by Hugh-Smith about was basically CORRECT, except to the degree that it grossly understated the degree to which the civilization that we are living inside of has become psychotic and is manifesting runaway criminal insanities. Similarly, nothing that Hugh-Smith, or guys like him, say tend to ever get out of their ruts, of continuing to presume in their own basic world views, based on old-fashioned false fundamental dichotomies, and related impossible ideals, which are implicitly present in their notions of what the "solutions" to the problems could be.
Actually, there is NOTHING less than intellectual scientific revolutions, which would enable political science to become more consistent with physical science, that might approach being sufficient, and those advances would primarily be based on making artificial selection systems become more consistent with natural selection systems. HOWEVER, more than 99% of currently living human beings are NOT interested in that, and NOT willing to do that!
The tragic trajectory that we are on is that we are running out of time to go through the sorts of paradigm shifts that we would need to go through, so that our politics would become less psychotic. Dewey, THANKS for those links to the possible ways that quantum mechanics enables our mysterious sense of smell! I have read lots of interesting speculations about what MIGHT be the relationship between quantum mechanics and consciousness. Since smell is the oldest mental faculty, at the base of the brain, demonstrating that it was based on quantum mechanical principles would have many other awesome implications!
As far as "detecting liars" goes, I always think of Mark Twain's quip that the best liars believe in their own lies. After there has been generation after generation, gradually adapting to systems based on the long history of being able to back up lies with violence, it is hard to tell what people born into taking those systems for granted really think!
As articles on Zero Hedge have often pointed out, many of the people who run the Federal Reserve Board have personal histories of being academics. It is practically impossible to tell whether people like Bernanke or Yellen really believed their own bullshit! As far as I tell (from the perspective of being a total outsider, with no first or second hand knowledge whatsoever), they appear to believe their own bullshit. Indeed, my view is that they are picked and promoted to fill those official roles because they were the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites available to fill those roles.

Good points in the article but I think the elites have everything under control.
If you look at your hand, you only see the 'solids'; you don't even notice the 'spaces' that separate the fingers, or the space beyond the perimeter of your hand.
And yet, the spaces are just as much a part of your perception (both conscious and un) as the solids, but your brain has been conditioned to ignore the spaces and thus an equally, if not an essential part getting the whole picture is never considered.
