Chinese State Paper Warns "War Will Be Inevitable" Unless U.S. Stops Meddling In Territorial Dispute

Tyler Durden's picture

Whereas over the past year, ever since the outbreak of the hostilities over the fate of Ukraine following the Victoria Nuland orchestrated presidential coup, relations between Russia and NATO have devolved to a Cold War 2.0 state as manifested by countless interceptions of Russian warplanes by NATO jets and vice versa as depicted in the following infographic...

... at least China was mercifully allowed to stay out of the fray between the Cold War enemies.

This all changed this month when first the Pentagon's annual report to Congress this month cast China as a threat to regional and international peace and stability, followed several weeks ago when, with China aggressively encroaching into territories in the South China Sea claimed by US allies in the region such as Philippines, Vietnam and Japan, the US decided to get involved in yet another regional spat that does not directly involve it, and started making loud noises about China's territorial expansion over the commodity-reach area.

China promptly relatiated by threatening a US spy plane during a routine overflight, while immediately thereafter the US retaliated at China's escalation, and warned that building sea "sandcastles" could "lead to conflict."

Far from shutting China up, earlier today China said it had lodged a complaint with the United States over a U.S. spy plane that flew over parts of the disputed South China Sea in a diplomatic row that has fuelled tension between the world's two largest economies.

Quoted by Reuters, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday China had lodged a complaint and that it opposed "provocative behaviour" by the United States.

"We urge the U.S. to correct its error, remain rational and stop all irresponsible words and deeds," she said. "Freedom of navigation and overflight by no means mean that foreign countries' warships and military aircraft can ignore the legitimate rights of other countries as well as the safety of aviation and navigation."

China had noted “ear-piercing voices” from many in the U.S. about China’s construction on the islands and reefs.

In other words, China just imposed an effective "no fly zone" for US spy planes, a dramatic shift from its recent posture when it tolerated and turned a blind eye to US spy plane overflights. Going forward, the US has been explicitly warned not to fly over China or risk the consequences.

This handout photo taken on March 16, 2015 by satellite imagery provider Digital Globe shows a satellite image of vessels purportedly dredging sand at Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea

And just to confirm that if the US had hoped it could threaten Beijing into submission and force the Politburo into curbing its expanionist appetit, it was dead wrong, the nationalist Global Times, a paper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper, the People’s Daily, said in a Monday editorial that war was “inevitable” between China and the United States unless Washington stopped demanding Beijing halt the building of artificial islands in the disputed waterway.

PressTV has more details:

A war between the United States and China is “inevitable” unless Washington stops demanding Beijing halt its construction projects in the South China Sea, a Chinese state-owned newspaper warns.

“If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea,” The Global Times, an influential newspaper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper the People’s Daily, said in an editorial Monday.

“We do not want a military conflict with the United States, but if it were to come, we have to accept it,” said The Global Times, which is among China’s most nationalist newspapers.

Beijing last week said it was “strongly dissatisfied” after a US spy plane defied multiple warnings by the Chinese navy and flew over the Fiery Cross Reef, where China is reportedly building an airfield and other installations.

“The intensity of the conflict will be higher than what people usually think of as ‘friction’,” it warned.

The paper also asserted that China was determined to finish its construction work in the South China Sea, calling it Beijing’s “most important bottom line.”

Such commentaries are not official policy statements, but are sometimes read as a reflection of government thinking.

More importantly, they serve as populism-timestamped warnings that US demands for a Chinese retreat over what the world's most populous nation considers' its own national interest, will backfire dramatically and the next time a US spy plane flies over the Spratly Islands, or Beijing's smog for that matter, a very serious diplomatic incident may ensue.

Paper tiger purring at paper eagle. Neither want to go to war. US would be in a quagmire to occupy China. We all know US hasn't won a war since WW2. I mean a real war.

Russia has a long history of shooting down US spy planes with no out break of WAR.  China will join the camp soon with a shoot down.

US will keep teasing the dragon until it bites.  The Chinese dragon is on a leash though,  the US is working to determine how short or long the leash.

'THE LOS ALAMOS SECRETS CASE: THE OVERVIEW; Nuclear Weapons Engineer Indicted in Removal of Data'

"A federal grand jury in New Mexico indicted a nuclear weapons engineer today on 59 counts of illegally removing highly classified design, construction and testing data from the Los Alamos weapons laboratory where he was employed.

The indictment charged that the engineer, Wen Ho Lee, had violated the Atomic Energy Act and Foreign Espionage Act, assembling collections of 19 computer files that contained some of the country's most closely held nuclear weapons secrets."

"Separately, officials said they were aware that the government would be criticized for singling Dr. Lee out for prosecution and would be prepared to show at his trial that unlike any other scientist or laboratory employee who mishandled secrets, Dr. Lee had selectively stripped the Los Alamos files of every conceivable secret related to nuclear weapons development over the last 50 years, an incalculable loss of research that in the wrong hands could alter the global balance of nuclear arms."

China nor USA will ever wage war against each other

it doesn't benefit the rich people in either country in any way

TALKING about it benefits them by controlling the 99% with nationalism

but they'll never actually do it.

most Chinese elite want to use nationalism to keep getting rich and the poor distracted, but don't want to actually have to act on their threats because they also want to send their kids to California or Vancouver... buy up Greek and Italian factories.... French and New Zealand farms, etc, send their 2nd girlfriends to LA or London, etc.

China is a paper tiger militarily speaking, and a full on military conflict with the U.S. utilizing all of its military might (no technology spared) would render China impotent before China could launch any significant response or counter-response.

I say this NOT as some sort of hawkish neocon, and incredibly critical of the U.S's recent military campaigns, yet am just stating a fact that I'm sure will incite many down arrows.

Truht you are forgetting that Russia is now a Chinese ally; if a war comes to China, Russia would stand behind the 'tiger' so your military analysis is fatally flawed.

I get what you're saying Truth, but we're currently 14+ years into a war with bearded cave-dwelling goat herders in Opiumlanistan.....and we seem to be barely holding ground, if not outright losing. We underestimate the chinese at our own peril. Besides, they would not engage us only in full-on frontal military combat. There would be massive cyberspace action avalanched into the mix as well, etc. They also happen to have nukes, which is the great equalizer when it comes to global games of Risk.

creonnoir's picture

The most realistic assessment I've read to date regarding this.  The ones controlling the wealth on either side do not benefit from a real (i.e. nuclear) war.  The same logic applies to most other perceived conflicts ( Ukraine ) currently taking place.  Moves on the chess/go board, nothing more.

That's not to say that accidents can't happen...

You make it sound like Americans are OK with having all their major cities wiped out in a few minutes. The Chinese Navy can nuke all US cities from inside the Bohai Sea with their submarines. Who knows how many they have off the American coast right now. Many are too stealthy to track.

You make it sound like Americans can just sit in front of their TV's and watch China get wiped out with no retaliation. Russia would probably take advantage and send over a couple of thousand missiles to make sure American is never a factor in anything again.

In the highly unfortunate & hopefully never to happen full scale hot war between China & the U.S., China would be defeated before ever being able to successfully launch a single nuclear payload carrying missile having any remote possibility of striking the continental United States.

China stages many "beauty pageant" military exercises and demonstrations of allegedly advanced technology, yet remains a true paper tiger militarily speaking.

Or Hillary's Chinese campaign contributions? Remember the Chinese nuns?

'Clinton’s Campaign Contributions–Chinese Communist Candidate?'

"The Times examined the cases of more than 150 donors who provided checks to Clinton after fundraising events geared to the Chinese community. One-third of those donors could not be found using property, telephone or business records. Most have not registered to vote, according to public records.

And several dozen were described in financial reports as holding jobs — including dishwasher, server or chef — that would normally make it difficult to donate amounts ranging from $500 to the legal maximum of $2,300 per election. …”

I am more worried about the Financial war against the SAVER.

I have seen nothing that tells me that China will not be a Fiatster like the US FED.  They need their gold just to get part of the upcoming New Fiat.

Once they get into the club, what is to stop them from being Repothication dickwads just the like the US Fed Banksters?

Comte de Saint Germain's picture

PRC population = 1.2 billion
US population = 320 million

Either nuclear or conventional war, China wins:

- After a nuclear war China's population will be reduced to about 300 million inhabitants, while in the north American landmass there will be survivors ranging only in the dozens of thousands (40 thousand at the most); thus People's Republic of China will send some 20 million of its citizens to recolonize those territories.

- The United States have no longer the industrial capacity, financial resources or manpower to sustain a major long term conventional war against China - and it will be a war of attrition. PRC will occupy America without too much resistance and the US will become a protectorate of China. Moreover, the PLA will show no mercy with those who may intent to challenge the new Sovereign; however, Americans who accept the Chinese political system will be treated with respect and dignity (in fact, they will enjoy successful lives).

post turtle saver's picture

eat shit and die... the Chinese would be scared to get out of bed every morning if they attempted to occupy the US... they want no part of that action, it would make occupying Afghanistan look like a walk in the park...

Most will not even know when the war started(EMP's knock out the power grids) 6 months laterafter millions of Americans have killed each other most people will look to the Chinese as saviors that finally stopped the endless localized wars...

willwork4food's picture

A very interesting thread here. I tend to agree with all, but deflator brings up a good point. TPTB want us to kill ourselves off. Everyone knows America is the last fully armed country in the world, albeit with only 300m people. America also has the majority of nukes. If the PRC wanted to do something stupid, they would get HAMMERED 10x the nukes we would take..which means 10x the radiation. I doubt they would really want to jump on a ship and sail over here to take out the rest of the remaining survivors with weapons.

But they might. Never underestimate the gall of the wealthy entrenched elite whether in Russia, China or the US.

I'd like to say you're right.  But the Afghans were able to live in frikking caves - they're battle hardened from years fighting whichever badass superpower thought they could win.  My gun cabinet and ammo stash would frighten most sheep in the northeast US or any liberal state, but that doesn't mean much unless it's in the right hands.  Do I have what it takes? Who knows.  We're the doughnut nation anymore.  I say I'd fight alongside my brothers... but does that mean I need to give up my sleepnumber bed?

Money_for_Nothing's picture

The battle hardened Afghans starve to death if they can't play one group against another. If it gets serious enough then some empire will do them like the British Empire did the Afrikaners. Gather all their women and children into concentration camps and (maybe) give them a chance to surrender or die out. Without outside resources they run out of bullets and beans.

It may be one hell of a conspiracy theory, but anyone else remember the story that was quickly scrubbed from the internet about Hillary Clinton's firstt official trip to China (virtually immediately after she became Secretary of State)? As the story goes, Obama had her issue documents granting eminent domaine for the USA to China as collateral for continuing loans.

Far fetched? Not one bit...

The Darwin Mode's picture

"PRC population = 1.2 billion, US population = 320 million; either nuclear or conventional war, China wins." --Comte de Saint ...

Premise: military superiority is a function of greater population. Let's test this premise with, say, Nigeria vs Russia: Nigeria population = 183.0 million, Russia = 142.1 million; either nuclear or conventional war, Nigeria wins. Hmmm. How about Bangladesh vs UK and Germany combined: Bangladesh population = 160.3 million, UK and Germany combined population = 146.1 million; Bangladesh wins. Again, hmmm. We could go on and on...

...Maybe Comte de Saint's premise is flawed?

Parrotile's picture

Neither Nigeria nor Bangladesh have any nuclear capability, and pretty scant military capability.

China has both (significant nuclear and delivery capacity, the World's largest standing army, with the World's largest trained Reservist capacity to call on). In any significant conflict, the Chinese WILL be very highly motivated.

Should the US decide to "Make an Example" of China, things WILL escalate, and should the "Making an Example" include attacks on mainland China, remember there are a LOT of ethnic Chinese in America (lots of "China Towns") and there are a LOT of very choice infrastructure targets in America too, targets that would be very difficult to repair  (the National Grid being one, along with major highway intersections, rail marshalling yards, bridge infrastructure - all "easy to attack" and difficult to effectively defend).

The Darwin Mode's picture

Nuclear capability was not a factor in his argument, Parrotile, elsewise he would have at least acknowledged the US' significant nuclear superiority over China. No: the argument was predicated on the assumption that population superiority dictates military superiority.

Parrotile's picture

Well in this case China has both. Population supremacy, and Military capability.

So it may not be such a good idea for the US to be indulging in needless provocation. Can you imagine the outcry if China was to do the same to "US" outposts - such as Diego Garcia??

The Darwin Mode's picture

"Well in this case China has both. Population supremacy, and Military capability. So it may not be such a good idea for the US to be indulging in needless provocation." --Parrotile

That's not the original poster's point at all, as you can clearly see for yourself. As for the US' imperialist provocations being unwise: yeah... ya think?! Of course it's stupid. As for just how stupid it is, I'd much rather talk about China's aggregate military capability than dwell on the intimidation factor of its billion-plus peasantry armed with pitchforks and hoes.

teslaberry's picture

yea the ethnic chinese would be scapegoated and like the jews, the nazi american oligarchy would see the property of 4 million ethnic chinese as a ripe fruit to be harvested as they are dispossessed and moved into forced camps for 'security'. like ww2 with the japanese americans, only worse and more efficient.

in fact, the existience of so much property for the taking is actually a point weighing in favor of the likelihood of war between the us.. and china.

On the contrary, you forget that the US Military is spread out all over the world, it has A scale nuclear missles it can shoot in mass as well...

It would be ugly to see a nuclear war, China would lose a lot of people, that is for sure, and fast.

Which smells much like something the elite would want anyway....

In the end a lot of poor defenseless people will die...

Enough said.

Tarzan's picture

After the "poor defenseless people" die, I suspect in a SHTF situation, neither the US nor the Chinese States will have much success "ocupying" the suburbs and countrysides of the US with armed jackboots.  We are BY FAR the most armed people of any nation.

We will not be defeated with an armed invation, but by monitary suicide, a death march of apathy that leads to a sudden collapse from within.
