all good points, and no-doubt problems each and every... i once thought along the same lines; reckoning a twist or tweak here or there would remedy the malady. but seems to me that the breakdown in the political apparatus is but a symptom of a more serious cultural/societal disease rather than the cause of it...a pervasive malaise has invested the environs of the west with its funk; like a haze descended on the peoples that won't seem to let up.
people are tired of having to refashion their identity every decade or so; people seek purpose and meaning in life; people want their existence to matter for its substance...people want to believe that what they are is associated with 'who' they are, and they want to take pride in that.

and, yes, i'm rather pissed over a specific something. janus' eldest just took the SAT. scored a perfect 800 on the reading. 720 on math (but that's only because many of the questions are no longer an evaluation of the student's ability to solve problems, and by the solving reveal a competency with the concepts of mathematics; rather, the student must be able to, from rote, list the steps they've imposed on bright minds...these convoluted steps are to be memorized, and are a deliberate attempt to 'level the playing field')...and then it gets much-much worse. believe it or not, my seed all possess a keen aptitude for the written word. and yet, my eldest scores a 500 on the writing section. and this section purposely solicits the opinion of the student on issues that are specifically divisive. moreover, the grader is allowed to see the name and handwriting style of the student, inviting (nay, encouraging) prejudice. sadly, my son has a very waspish last name and an equally waspish christian name. and so, he gets a 500 on the only section where subjective bias is invited into the scoring.
