IRS Hacked: Government Admits 100,000 Taxpayers' Data Stolen

Tyler Durden's picture

In an unprecedented move against a government agency, which we are just waiting to hear blamed on Russia, The IRS has admitted that its data has ben compromised...

  • *IRS SAYS THIEVES ACCESSED TAX INFORMATION ON 100,000 PAYERS: AP
  • *IRS'S KOSKINEN SAYS THERE WAS UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS FEB-MAY

As AP reports,

Thieves used an online service provided by the IRS to gain access to information from more than 100,000 taxpayers, the agency said Tuesday.

The information included tax returns and other tax information on file with the IRS.

The IRS said the thieves accessed a system called "Get Transcript." In order to access the information, the thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address.

"The IRS notes this issue does not involve its main computer system that handles tax filing submission; that system remains secure," the agency said in a statement.

The IRS said thieves targeted the system from February to mid-May. The service has been temporarily shut down.

"In all, about 200,000 attempts were made from questionable email domains, with more than 100,000 of those attempts successfully clearing authentication hurdles," the agency said. "During this filing season, taxpayers successfully and safely downloaded a total of approximately 23 million transcripts."

Tax returns can include a host of personal information that can help someone steal an identity, including Social Security numbers and birthdates of dependents and spouses. However, the IRS said the thieves appeared to already have a lot of personal information about the victims.

The IRS said it is notifying taxpayers whose information was accessed.

One wonders if they found Lois Lerner's emails while they were in there?

The IRS calling some other group / person a thief? I wonder how many .gov employees see the irony in that.

Unreal..

once the currency is all digital we won't have to file returns anymore.  We won't need to check our info and the IRS won't have to talk with anyone.  They will just help themselves to our digits.  They will say congress requires us to fund the government and we took what we needed.  They will just tap everyone for 10, 20, 30 percent and more of what you have on record until they have enough to cover the congressional hookers.

A moar important question.

Does anybody really expect digital currency / banking to be secure?

"once the currency is all digital we won't have to file returns anymore. "

Yes and no.

Since their gulags will still need prisoners--slave labor--there will still be a "filing" requirement.

"What did you do to get sent here to Guantanamo #34? My computer filed my "return" with the European date format. And you..."

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

"Your filing said you owed SDR2,546.78, but we estimated it to be SDR2,546.79. Therefore we assessed and took out an additional SDR876.89 for penalties and interest."

I would expect nothing less from an organization run by a Physics PhD. Put an engineer in charge of the IRS and we all might sleep better at night. Warren buffet and his toy trains/tax code does not count.

HEY!!!!    Watch that slander, buddy.

He does NOT have a Ph.D.   he has a batchelor's degree in physics (which just about qualifies you to be a technician).  His post-grad work was all in law.

....And if you are going to try to slander physicists, be sure to distinguish between theorists and experimentalists..... you can badmouth theorists all you want.   (Ph.D. experimental physicists are who folks hire when the going gets tough and the engineers can't get the job done....)

(so there!)

I stand corrected and will improve my process. That is what engineers do. But I am pretty sure the dude who has a physics degree and is also running the IRS has enough "physics" type acolades from prestidious instutions to be a LLM in Physics.

the degrees don't matter if you work for NIST and are a physicist. Accolades are more important. Something about jet fuel and steel. History will not be kind. Neither will the scientific method.

Critical emails lost. Sensitive information for 100000 clients leaked to online thieves. In a private corporation, the head of IT (at least) would be fired. And the head of the company might even be forced out. But the IRS is a government monopoly, so no one will even get a mild scolding for these failures.
