"It's A Madhouse" - At Least 6 Dead, 12 Missing As Floods "Hammer" Texas & Oklahoma

Tyler Durden's picture

"We got hammered," Houston's emergency management coordinator Rick Flanagan told CNN, and as the following stunning images show, that is an understatement. "We've seen flooding before, but not nearly to this extreme," said one resident, adding "It rains and it rains and it rains, and there's really nowhere for the water to go... It's ridiculous." Perhaps even more stunningly, as Mashable's Andrew Freeman notes, the floods have been a remarkable turn of events for a region that was still mired in drought as of three weeks ago. That drought, which had affected Texas since 2010, is now effectively over in most areas, as is a long-running drought in Oklahoma. Authorities are still searching for 12 members of two families who went missing over the weekend.

As Reuters reports,

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday described the flash flooding that had killed at least three people in his state as "a relentless wall of water that mowed down huge trees like they were grass."

Abbott declared states of disaster in 24 counties and flew over the area south of Austin to assess the damage caused by tornadoes, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding that forced evacuations and rooftop rescues and left thousands of residents without electrical power.

"This is the biggest flood this area of Texas has ever seen," Abbott said.

"It is absolutely massive - the relentless tsunami-type power of this wave of water," the governor said.

He described homes that were "completely wiped off the map" by the dangerous weather system that struck Texas and Oklahoma.

Widespread severe thunderstorms were forecast to continue on Monday in north-central and northeast Texas and southern Oklahoma, likely bringing destructive winds, tornadoes and hail, the National Weather Service said.

So many broken windows! Somewhere a krug man just blew his load...

As far as global warming is concerned, you can't really blame the faithful. It's even better than religion because:

Dry day = Global Warming

Rainy day = Global Warming

Snowy day = Global Warming

Hot day = Global Warming

Cold day = Global Warming

High crime day = Global Warming

No crime day = Global Warming

Picked up a hooker? = Global Warming

Dog shits on the rug = Global Warming

Wife goes on the rag = Global Warming

Lost your carkeys = Global Warming

It's just one of those things that no one can prove or show ANY physical evidence of, but it can be used to explain LITERALLY everything bad that happens in your life!

BoredRoom, you obviously have little knowledge in science...

Climate change is intensifying the circulation of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth — causing drought and floods to be more frequent, severe and widespread.

Higher temperatures increase the amount of moisture that evaporates from land and water, leading to drought in many areas. Lands affected by drought are more vulnerable to flooding once rain falls. Like Texas and Oklahoma

As temperatures rise globally, droughts will become more frequent and more severe, with potentially devastating consequences for agriculture, water supply and human health. This phenomenon has already been observed in some parts of Asia and Africa, where droughts have become longer and more intense.

This was merely a 100 year Type 2 rainfall event with a higher intensity and shorter duration than the typical Type III Cyclonic event for Texas.

Type two events always have higher intensities and shorter rainfall durations, coupled this with the sun bakled soil from a long drought and it  causes the run-off coefficients to skyrocket and the dicharges to increase.

Maybe mankind's infernal [sic] combustion engine and his coal-fired power plants are to blame.  Maybe CO2 is the most efficious greenhouse gas (it's not- H2O is), and maybe Al Gore is an honest and forthright commoner from Tennessee (my proximate northern neighbor) who has no agenda and only wants that which is best for me and mine.

Thanks for the kind words....

And yes, H20 is the most important GHG in terms of effect, but it is a feedback not a forcing. Remove the C02 and CH4 and the world becomes a snowball in 20 years. Remove the water vapor and it will return to normal in 10 days or so...

It has to do with the fact that C02 doesn't evaporate or condense...

BTW, don't you know Gore's Law? It is same as Godwin's Law except whoever brings up Al Gore in a debate about AGW automatically loses...

Tue, 05/26/2015 - 20:44 | 6134443 acetinker

Gore's Law- did not know that one, and I think it's very candid of you to reveal same.

Remove carbon dioxide?

That would kill all the green shit.

I don't wanna kill the green shit.

Remove methane?

How could you (or Al Gore, who apparently cost me the argument) prevent the emission of gas by decomposing dead stuff mitigate this atrocity?

They'll do it with a tax!  We can prevent the emission of methane with a tax!

Reminds me of a story, if I may;

One day a rancher was visited by an IRS agent.  The agent demanded to inspect the property, and showed his official badge.

The rancher said you can look all you want, just don't open the door to the red barn.

The agent angrily replied that he was an agent of the US gubmint, and in this capacity he could go where he damn well pleased.

Predictably, the agent headed straight for the red barn.

Inside the barn was an angry, horny Brahma bull, which also predictably caused the agent to soil his bottom and run, screaming, toward the farmhouse.

The ranchers' reply?  Show him your badge!

Just like speed and velocity are the same eh?

To experts they have very precise meanings which are different...

BTW, climate is typically taken to be a 30 year average of the weather...

EDIT: Pinched this quote from an expert:

Weather concerns an initial value problem: Given today's situation, what will tomorrow bring? Weather is chaotic; imperceptible differences in the initial state of the atmosphere lead to radically different conditions in a week or so. Climate is instead a boundary value problem — a statistical description of the mean state and variability of a system, not an individual path through phase space.

What about the average climate over the last 3 bilion years? What if 30 years is not a long enough window? /Rhetorical Question.

So much for the "experts" which are more rare than tits on a bull, and about as useful. So much for your appeal to authority, and appeal to fear.

Let's say climate is changing and that it is caused by humans. What do you propose as a solution? By whom should your plan be executed?

What about it?

The fact that the planet was pretty much unihabitable for humans until relatively recently is the relevant observation...

Take it to the logical conclusion and the prevailing climate since the dawn of civilization/agriculture is really what matters...

BTW, 30 years is based on the length of time for weather to average out... All related the observed variance of weather data...

The climate is a far-from-equilibrium self-organizing dissipative system.

These types of systems emerge only in the presence of a large energy gradient.

Example far-from-equilibrium self-organizing dissipative system: http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/outreach/education/science/convection/RBCel...

The energy gradient that our climate system feeds off of is amount of energy that the atmosphere is capable of absorbing.

This is called thermal capacity, heat capacity, specific heat, etc.

The thermal capacity of the atmosphere is directly related to its concentrations of green-house gasses.

As green-house gas concentration goes up so too does thermal capacity.

As the thermal capacity goes up the climate system must evolve to dissipate the increase in the thermal gradient.

As that evolution occurs the stable climate system we've grown to rely on begins changing.

Now these systems ARE very stable so long as the energy gradient remains within a stable range.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgrU3tzgxXo

Push the gradient out of the required range and changes are bound to occur.

What does it look like when the climate system is forced to dissipate more energy than it is used to?

Well...

Look at Texas...

This is typical cyclical patterns as any person who has lived on this earth long enough will tell you

Yes it does.  Weather weapons heat certain places either by electromagnetic energy or by blanketing the area with cloud cover (remember that greenhouse effect).

The weapons cause temperature changes that in turn cause high and low pressure systems to move, to weaken, or to strengthen, depending upon where they are applied.

As the two cirdulations move into the intended position, their combined flow reroutes moist ocean air.  This is accompanied by injection of aluminum, barium, strontium, and plastic micro-fibres into the warm air causing it to get even warmer.  Warmer air can contan higher water content before it precipitates, and so the warmer air masses cam be directed around or even over their natural rain zones.

The result is that massive, fast moving moist air cells reach the central plains along with a N-S wind.  (The high pressure warm cell on the west coast rotates clockwise, while the low pressure cold cell on the east coast rotates counter clockwise, and the two mesh together through the tornado belt, driving wet storm air into the south central states.

West==Hot and Dry
East==Cold and Wet
Central==Windy and Stormy

South-Central (OK, TX)==Massive water dump kills people.

Question is, ... who is doing this?
