The Leading And Most "Distinctive" Causes Of Death In Your State

Tyler Durden's picture

In a nation in which every third citizen is obese, it should come as no surprise that the leading cause of death in virtually all states (except the "healthier" ones) is heart disease. Which the map below, of most common sources of death in any state using CDC data, confirms is precisely the case.

Fig 1: Leading Cause Of Death By State

No surprises there.

However, that doesn't mean that every "average" American is doomed to die from a heart attack.

According to a recent study by the CDC looking at the most distinctive deaths by state, by which they mean which type of death is abnormally represented relative to the national mean, Americans have a veritable cornucopia of ways in which they "pass" depending on which state they call home.

As the CDC observes, the resulting map depicts a variety of distinctive causes of death based on a wide range of number of deaths, from 15,000 deaths from HIV in Florida to 679 deaths from tuberculosis in Texas to 22 deaths from syphilis in Louisiana. The largest number of deaths mapped were the 37,292 deaths in Michigan from “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, so described”; the fewest, the 11 deaths in Montana from “acute and rapidly progressive nephritic and nephrotic syndrome.” The state-specific percentage of total deaths mapped ranged from 1.8% (Delaware; atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, so described) to 0.0005% (Illinois, other disorders of kidney).

For the Illinois fans: the reason "gunshot wounds" is not shown is because it is not a part of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, which is where the CDC pulled its disease sample from.

So without further ado, here is the color-coded map of "most distinctive causes of death by state, 2001-2010." Twenty-three different causes of death were identified. The most common was “other and unspecified acute lower respiratory infections,” seen in 6 states (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin).

This is pretty interesting. If you think it through you can figure out the underlying causes of the cited medical conditions.

New York and California: The obvious underlying cause is sexually transmitted disease. In New York, it's females who predominate, in California it's the men. Exactly what you'd expect given that these two states are the Sodom and Gomorrah of the USA.

Kentucky, WV, and PA: coal mining-related respiratory disease.

Upper midwest and Maine: cold-weather.

Texas: Illegal immigration

Florida: The HIV deaths are probably more due to drug use than sexual activity. Unsurprising considering it is a major gateway for drug smuggling.

Louisiana: New Orleans!!

Tennessee and Mississippi: Stereotypes are based in reality.

Vermont, New Hampshire, and North Carolina: People assume that rednecks only live down south, but there are plenty of them in New England too.

I guess what "R" and "W" mean is, we don't have a fucking clue what kills these people. Does this mean that Georgia, Indiana, Massachusets, Utah, and Rhode Island have something in common that we don't know about?

Deaths due to homelessness might fall under "legal intervention".  It's open season on bums in Albuquerque, as long as you have a license to kill.  $400 bounty on the varmints.  The police union calls it trauma pay.  Google James Boyd.  Of course, the pigs weren't traumatized at all.  They were whooping it up.  http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/when-cops-break-bad-albuque...

Funny murder and suicide wasn't mentioned.  Wonder which states would list those for "most distinctive" cause of death.  Automobile accidents were not listed either.  Accidental discharge of firearms is listed.  Why are these listed while other causes not related to illness are?

Also note the difference between "most distinctive" and "most prevalent."  These are not the cause occuring most in each state.

Edit:  I see transport accidents are listed.

I am more interested BTW in death-cause stats for people under 55 or some threshhold of past peak vigor like that.     Humans beyond 70 are falling apart in numerous ways with the same end.  In the old days they correctly diagnosed elderly deaths at very low cost indeed by writing in "old age" or "consumption" or whatever.

Well, either Morbid Obesity (BMI > 35) gets your Ticker after age 55, or...

If you live long enough, some form of Cancer will get you. Humans are not meant to live to 100.

Also, as a rule of thumb... You can live up to 80 with the right life choices in diet, exercise and stress minimization. Everything >80 is determined by genes (having picked the right parents and grandparents).

I recall seeing a TV program on some Science, NatGeo or Discovery channel some years ago, that researchers in Sweden found that men whose Grandfathers had good nutrition during puberty, got to live long. Likewise, women whose maternal grandmothers and mothers had good nutrition while in their mother's womb, lived longer. Apparently the DNA in the sperm and egg is of better quality if proper nutrition is available during its creation.

Thus... "Your kids and grand-kids are what You eat".
Betya, ya didn't know.

p.s. Hence, for these reasons, stay away from GMO's, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Food Additives, meats with Growth Hormones and Antibiotics, and Monsanto. Of course with the super-secret TPP, you'll never know.

Quantum Nucleonics's picture

"Everything >80 is determined by genes "... recent research has disproven this to an extent.  Diet and activity play a large role than thought.  A study of populations with excess centenarians showed diet an exercise have a correlation.  But the key to the diet part appeared to be not much meat but lots of beans.

"Humans are not meant to live to 100"... This doesn't have any basis in fact or reality.  Aging is a cumulative error process, not a programmed feature.

Genetics strongly interact and modify the pros/cons of diet and activity.  I work on a gene that is directly responsive to diet and exercise and is one of the very few genetically linked to human longevity.  The current thinking in the field is that due to the complexity of longevity and all the influencing factors there is not 1 gene that will ever be known as THE gene.  This complicates genetic mapping studies because what you end up with are numerous weak associations that may have higher-order interactions which require ever larger study populations to test for significance.  I work on a real unicorn and have quite a discovery about it :D

I disagree about cancer. Cancer was pretty rare among all age groups until the 20th century. Now it is a leading cause of death amongst ALL age groups.

Cancer has little to do with age other than the fact that elderly people have to die of SOMETHING, and given that cancer is a leading cause of death nowadays, your odds of dying of it increase the longer you live simply due to statistics.

Multiple reasons.  A major one being vastly improved diagnostics.  Yet another is since people are dieing at age 30 of typhoid we tend to live to ages where we will get cancer, therefore incidences are truely higher as well.

Good links, A.

The wisdom of the ancients proved yet again.

Fasting was practiced for thousands of years.

Cleanses the body- restores the soul.

WTF is legal intervention as a cause of death ? I fully realize the gov is far too big and intrusive , but wonder what "U" is based on ?

I wondered the same thing what is "Legal Intervention?" Does that mean you were killed by police or that you suffered from severe withdrawal symtoms in rehab? Inquiring minds want to know...

AL and TN - "accidental" discharge of firearms.  Could be just a lot of dumb rednecks (lots of Scotch Irish here) or the favorite euphemism for shucking your mortal coil - intentionally.  I believe that Hemmingway died while "cleaning his rifles".  Back in the olden days, a gentleman often died by "cutting himself while shaving".  Another euphemism.  Interesting factoid:  90% of the time a white ends a life with a firearm it's his own life.  When a black ends a life  it's almost always someone else's life.

LA and syphilis.  Is that not easily curable?  Blacks have btw the highest rates of VD - by far.  Seven  to one over whites.  Pacific Islanders are pretty high too but not too many of those in LA.

And Appalachia PA, KY and WV still lose bunches to black lung disease.   I'm a big advocate of open pit mining.

Lots of Scotch-Irish in AZ also but they must know how to aim and/or confuse the court system resulting in "discharge, undetermined intent".  Either that or McStain and Nepalitano (former governor) just proved too much for them and they offed themselves.

Fluoride is a toxic poison which hardens the arteries, and is the primary cause of heart disease in America, since almost all of our water is fluoridated and almost everybody is bathing in it and drinking it daily.

Wow! Really shows how lazy and decadent the U.S. is.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il died of "physical and mental overwork".

I'll bet that it is by far the most common cause of death among NORKs.

I saw this misleading garbage last week and am surprised it finds it way to the ZH page.

The title of the article is WRONG. How can Meningoccocal infection, which kills 100-200 people in the whole of US a year be the leading cause of death in WA state ?

What the data says is that the particular disease listed for individual state is more prevalent in that state compare to others. That is all. SHAME ON YOU ZH !!

Some guy gets shot or has an accident that is nowhere near lethal, but due to some "mistake" dies in the hospital.  What do you think the cause of death is listed as?  How many actually die from chemo and radiation rather than the cancer?

Leading causes of death in ALL states

1 - fake food

2 - big pharma

3 - doctors
