Europe Has A Solution For The Unemployment Problem: Fake Jobs

Tyler Durden's picture

The jobs gap that has characterized the global economy since the crisis has cost some $1.2 trillion in lost wages and nearly $4 trillion in GDP. Employment growth worldwide has been just 1.4% since 2001, well below the 1.7% pace that prevailed prior to 2008. The result: there are 61 million fewer people employed globally than there would have been if pre-crisis trends had prevailed.

In the eurozone, where unemployment stands at 11.3% and where some countries — Spain being a prime example — are struggling under unemployment rates that approximate what the US experienced during the Great Depression, the ECB has been forced to effectively abandon its “single mandate” of promoting price stability in favor of a stance that’s more in-line with the Fed’s dual mandate that encompasses both price stability and maximum employment.

Against this backdrop, many Europeans are struggling to find work, but have no fear, Europe has a solution: fake jobs. The New York Times has more:

At 9:30 a.m. on a sunny weekday, the phones at Candelia, a purveyor of sleek office furniture in Lille, France, rang steadily with orders from customers across the country and from Switzerland and Germany. A photocopier clacked rhythmically while more than a dozen workers processed sales, dealt with suppliers and arranged for desks and chairs to be shipped.

Sabine de Buyzer, working in the accounting department, leaned into her computer and scanned a row of numbers. Candelia was doing well. Its revenue that week was outpacing expenses, even counting taxes and salaries. “We have to be profitable,” Ms. de Buyzer said. “Everyone’s working all out to make sure we succeed.”

This was a sentiment any boss would like to hear, but in this case the entire business is fake. So are Candelia’s customers and suppliers, from the companies ordering the furniture to the trucking operators that make deliveries. Even the bank where Candelia gets its loans is not real.

Candelia is one of a number of so-called “Potemkin” companies operating in France. Everything about these entities is imaginary from the customers, to the supply chain, to the banks, to the “wages” employees receive and while the idea used to be that the creation of a “parallel economic universe” would help to train the jobless and prepare them for real employment sometime in the future, these “occupations” are now serving simply as way for the out-of-work to suspend reality for eight hours a day. Here’s The Times again:

These companies are all part of an elaborate training network that effectively operates as a parallel economic universe. For years, the aim was to train students and unemployed workers looking to make a transition to different industries. Now they are being used to combat the alarming rise in long-term unemployment, one of the most pressing problems to emerge from Europe’s long economic crisis.

Ms. de Buyzer did not care that Candelia was a phantom operation. She lost her job as a secretary two years ago and has been unable to find steady work. Since January, though, she had woken up early every weekday, put on makeup and gotten ready to go the office. By 9 a.m. she arrives at the small office in a low-income neighborhood of Lille, where joblessness is among the highest in the country.

While she doesn’t earn a paycheck, Ms. de Buyzer, 41, welcomes the regular routine. She hopes Candelia will lead to a real job, after countless searches and interviews that have gone nowhere.

“It’s been very difficult to find a job,” said Ms. de Buyzer, who like most of the trainees has been collecting unemployment benefits. “When you look for a long time and don’t find anything, it’s so hard. You can get depressed,” she said. “You question your abilities. After a while, you no longer see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

This comes as Europe's long-term employment problem deepens and triggers what we have described as a sell-fulfilling prophecy wherein unemployment leads to lower aggregate wages which in turn spells lower consumer spending, crippling the economy and discouraging companies from hiring:

Yet long-term unemployment — the kind that Ms. de Buyzer and nearly 10 million others in the eurozone are experiencing — has become a defining reality.

Last year, a staggering 52.6 percent of unemployed people in the eurozone were without work for a year or more, the highest on record, according to Eurostat, and many of those have been jobless more than two years.

“If you have a significant part of the population that’s not integrated, they won’t increase their spending, which dampens a possible recovery,” said Paul de Grauwe, a professor of European political economy at the London School of Economics. When a large number of people go jobless for long stretches, “you also subdue optimism, which will weigh on an economic turnaround"...

"It’s worrisome because we’re talking about many people who have been out of work for a very long time,” said Stefano Scarpetta, the director of employment, labor and social affairs at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. “Their skills can become obsolete. They get stigmatized. They risk being disconnected from the workplace and society, with negative implications for them, their families and the economy.”

Of course, in today's global economy, it's difficult to propser even if you're a make-believe company which is why it shouldn't surprise you to learn that "Animal Kingdom", a fake pet store, is on the verge of fake bankruptcy:

She looked at a stack of invoices, including some orders from virtual companies that had not been paid. “If this keeps up we’ll go out of business,” Mrs. Banuelos said, handing the papers to two women with instructions to follow up. “What’s our strategy to improve profitability?” she asked the group.

But never fear Potemkin companies, because you are not alone. There are other entities out there who are going bankrupt on paper while making things up as they go along in a "parallel" universe — those entities are called "central banks."

Just think that this is the Dystopia of the future where nobody does anything productive as robotics have taken over everything and "businesses" like this have to turn people away as the population panics trying to find something, anything from which to carve the slightest sense of self esteem and a raison d'etre.
Gonna suck even worse than today.

pretty much what i was thinking- but a mix of brave new world, resident evil , soylent green and the matrix where the slave classes (ie pretty much everyone cept the overlord bankers/umbrella corporation heads and those with specialized skills) are fed their soma drug and a place to go to pretend to work during the day--all part of the system to keep the uneducated masses placid... (this is before they figure out how to plug people into the matrix directly) and the masters can use the masses as they need for slave labor if necessary. (they feed the masses to the masses, of course). increasing welfare societies and these fake jobs are the beginning of a sad kind of future for humanity perhaps.

In the 80's, my wife's home town smelled like shit, literally.  They had a papermill, a chemical plant, a couple of fisheries and canning plants, there was a dock that unloaded god-awful shit from ships, and thre were so many planted pine trees that pine pollen would lay many low during the season.  Her home town had a population, in 1983, of about 5,600, the papermill employed 7,000, the chemicla plant employed 1,300, the fishery employed 600 and the cannery employed 400.

Today, her hometown has 25,000 people.  The papermill is gone, the chemical plant is gone, the fisheris are gone, canning is gone, and the dock is a harsh, empty place.  Her hometown was absolutely destroyed by flood then yellow fever, back when it was the Capitol of Florida...now it's been destroyed by Government.

The only jobs there are highly coveted at various seafood restaurants and MikkieD's.  My nephew works in the AF, my oldest niece, his wife, works as a nurse...all the rest are meth heads and welfare addicts, save one young lady that is desperately trying to get her shit together (I have little hope for her.)

This town literally had a split down the middle by railroad tracks...and the other side of the tracks were the black people.  When I arrived there in 1978 the park in the middle of the town still had segregated water fountains.  I had never, in my life, seen a 'White's Only' sign anywhere.  (I'm a white guy.)  It was appalling.

At the gas station next door, across the street, from the park I mentioned to the owner that it was really weird to see a 'White's Only' sign in this(that) day and age.  Turned out the gas station owner was the mayor of the town for the last ten years and the next thirty or so.  He asked who I was and I said I was Hubert's son in law.  He said "you're the kid that married Debbie ain't you?"  I said yes.  He said, "You're from California, we do things a bit different here, get used to it and you'll go places."

Never did like that guy.  And didn't accept the horrific invitation to join the local social club.

Spent the 80's and 90's as an outcast from the democrat scene, which was fine with me, I used to be republican.

Don't even get me started on Charleroi. Rijsel is pleasant in comparison... but it's all good - if they're not 'Foods' then they make up the demographic distortions of a post industrial society and introduce their own unique distortions into the civilization.

Doesn't matter if the jobs have been offshored to a different Bubble-continent now does it?

Some people post about the Civil war and how the North wanted to ruin the economy in the South and had a post war program to continue to run the people in the South into the Ground.

Today Globalism and Free Trade are most of what is mentioned. Unions often did get too expensive in the North and the West Coast I would guess, compensation out the roof and few good private executives able to negotiate with the smart, clever, benefit savvy Unions.

Of course Private Executive Compensation has since got out of control to full retard level as the Unions died. Unions now are not the problem.

But I wonder about any hateful plan behind this.

TPTB seem to care little about the people or damage done to communities.

It would be great to see where the jobs are now. Good paying full time jobs. Charts or maps of cities or regions. Obviously if it is a tight knit Mormon community, then that might indicate Networks exist which advantage certain people. Union Shops might also keep us from jobs like in New Jersey or some place.

Maybe BusinessInsider has charts on this, but ZH might not post them here for various reasons. I'll have to look.

BULLSHIT, Prober!

Most of the "money" that the Greeks "borrowed" was created out of nothing as debts. The groups of people that actually "lend" their own money, that they earned inside of the economic systems, are relatively trivial. Similarly, those people that "buy bonds" with their own money, that they earned inside of the economic systems, were also relatively trivial components of the overall systems based upon making billions and billions of Euros out of nothing as debts, which frauds were being enforced by governments.

Your view of how the political economy works, Prober, is a ridiculously superficial one. Unfortunately, judging from the up-votes that you have received for you comment above, as well as other similar comments you have made under other articles, too many other people who read Zero Hedge also have that distorted and over-simplified view of the political economy, where their own tiny keyhole of perceptions regarding what is going on are what they believe must be the whole story.

What you are stating is but an tiny aspect of the bigger picture, which you then are asserting as if it were the whole story, like the parable about the blind mind deciding what an elephant was, after each one touched a different part of that elephant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant

EVERYONE is living INSIDE of a political economy based upon a foundation of ENFORCED FRAUDS. Those few people who use their savings to invest in bonds, or lend to others, are TRIVIAL in the overall bigger picture of what was really going on.

Sat, 05/30/2015 - 14:45 | 6147166 Radical Marijuana
Radical Marijuana's picture

The history of the enforcement of frauds was not fake. The violence that backs up the lies was real enough. The PARADOXES of "fake money, fake jobs, fake statistics," etc., develop because it is actually possible to control civilization by systematically enforcing frauds. The established systems of legalized lies backed by legalized violence are both real and surreal, due to the ways that backing up lies with violence drives those lies to be treated as if they are true, despite that those lies never were true, and never could be made to become true, no matter how much violence backed those lies up.

Young people being trained in the context of fake jobs, where there will probably never be any real jobs, are young people being trained to accept the overwhelming systems of the biggest bullies' bullshit dominating everything. "... we all make exceptions" because of the history of successful warfare based upon deceits and treacheries, morphing into the history of successful finance based upon enforcing frauds.

"Who even still knows what is real?"

It is an extremely complicated, indeed, hyper-complicated situation! Anyone attempting to figure out "what is the difference" between relative lies and relative truths has to try to comprehend the ways that lies can be backed up with violence, or frauds enforced. EVERYTHING in our political economy is based on privately controlled banks being able to make the public "money" supply out of nothing as debts, while that fraud is being enforced by governments. Meanwhile, pretty well nobody who is socially successful is going to admit and address that is the foundation of the established political economy system, that young people are supposed to be learning to get a job within.

Since there has been a long, long history of civilization being controlled by backing up lies with violence, enabling those lies to become to dominant social stories, almost everyone who is socially successful has learned to become the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites, in proportion to their position within the social pyramid systems that were built on that basis of being able to enforce frauds.

The thread to follow through labyrinth of the GRAND PARADOXES that civilization is controlled by entrenched systems of lies backed by violence is that there MUST BE DEATH CONTROL SYSTEMS, & THERE ARE!

It made sense that there had to be some death control systems. It made sense that the most socially successful death control systems were those operating through the maximum possible deceits. Therefore, it makes sense that we live inside of a society where almost everything is fake, EXCEPT the force that backs up those fakes.

Young people are being brainwashed to believe in the biggest bullies' bullshit world view, regarding how human beings and civilization operate, i.e., by them getting productive jobs, when actually the production of destruction controls production. Of course, in a thoroughly paradoxical, but still consistent way, even those whose jobs are to apply the legalized violence to enforce the legalized lies (such as the banksters' frauds), also tend to believe in utter bullshit about their jobs too.

In my view, it IS possible to untangle the paradoxes that civilization is controlled by systems of enforced frauds. However, doing that requires profound series of intellectual scientific revolutions, due to the degree that pretty well everything has become almost totally FAKED. What continues to be "really real" is that the only connection between human laws and natural laws is the ability to back up lies with violence.

Civilization has created cultural systems of artificial selection, which were driven to develop by natural selection pressures, in extremely PARADOXICAL WAYS! The essential problems continue to be now what they always were, that there must be some death control system, while those which were the most deceitful were the most socially successful.

To diminish the degree to which civilization has become pretty well FAKE EVERYTHING, in which the financial enforced frauds are the most important manifestation of that, would require that the necessary death controls were done in ways which were less deceitful. However, there are no practical ways to do that. Rather, there is pretty well nothing but systems of the biggest and best organized gangs of criminals (governments controlled by banksters), surrounded by controlled opposition groups which stay within the same basic bullshit frame of reference, that asserts there should not be any death control systems, or at least none that human beings are consciously aware of operating.

The existing death control systems are NOT FAKES, however, those have become runaway criminal insanities, due to the ways that they have become so totally based upon deceits that they no longer have any rational relationships left to what they are really doing, nor how and why they developed to do those things.

In that context, the news published on Zero Hedge continues to seem more and more like the satires published on The Onion. Stories like the one above become SURREAL, to the point where, at first glance, they appear to be satires. However, they are "real" because of the ways that enforced frauds have developed into runaway social psychoses.

That is how I regarded your comment, bytebank. You are correctly pointing out the degree to which everything else is fake, so why not fake jobs. However, I have attempted to explain how and why that kind of appearance of FAKE EVERYTHING developed during history, and therefore, why the realities regarding the death control systems, no matter how PARADOXICAL those become, are still the thread of analysis to follow through the maze of the social situations where everything is based upon enforced frauds, and therefore, everything appears to be FAKES! Although the laws of man have no other connection to the laws of nature than the ability to back up lies with violence, human laws still DO HAVE THAT REAL CONNECTION!

I love it.

To paraphrase the late Jean Baudrillard, we have fake fake jobs exist to prevent us from recognizing the disappearance of fake real jobs (to prevent us from recognizing the disappearance of real jobs?).

Seriously though, this is just a symptom of failure to admit/accept/acknowledge that all economies are repricing labor itself - downward. It's only been happening for about ... 30 years now.

(The only labor that is still bid is that (as ZH has repeated again and again) of industries/institutions which can (a) pay themselves (FIRE), (b) finance themselves (government, NGOs, major corporations), and/or (c) serve the luxury market.)

It's the cause that vexes people. The notion that labor itself can lose its (utility) value is rather unpalatable and therefore ignored.

We're still mining rock, crushing it, selling it and using it to make ready mix cement that the government buys to build elaborate shooting ranges and tank parking lots.  We by and resell steel and steel components, and have a division that took that steel to build 450 FEMA rifle towers (yeah, we really did).  We take in concrete and get money to dump it, then crush it into powder and sell it as road base.  Yep, we get paid to take it and even more to sell it.

There still is real industry and manufacturing going on.  You won't find it on Wall Street.  It's the local mom and pop's that made desperate sacrifices, along with their employees, back in 2006 that are still in business.  Those sacrifices paid off and they became free of debt and extremely lean...not to mention voloptuously hungry.

We're in such good shape that we not only totally bought out a competitor in an area, that we are now leasing an area of land to them that they used to own.

IN spite of the Fed and our War Criminal Government, there are still mom and pop's that still listen to people like me when the shit is about to hit the fan.

We are a lean, clean, locally social, machine, employing 250+, $35m Revenue and $4m profit, with active envolvment, company-wide in local charities.  This years audit should be complete in nine days and be morally, enviromentally, legally and ethically, clean as a whistle.

If only our war criminal government could brag the same.

The reason it's unpalatable is that most people know they are considered means to an end by their masters, and that when robots are able to do all the work the masters will take great pleasure in exterminating the proletariat.

If I thought the end of work would result in everyone getting a no strings attached national dividend to live on, I'd welcome it. It will actually result in the 99 per cent being shoved into gas chambers by their robot replacements.

Y'all keep resisting the fact that a new paradigm is forming whether we like it or not.  Refer to Kurt Vonnegut for a primer on labor and its downward spiral, and how it was handled by government and other employers.

"Player Piano", captures a near future society in a dystopic state due to the fact that human beans, 90% of them have nothing to do.

We're going to have to invent other things to do with our allotted 90-120 yrs. on earth, finding other ways to 'work' or we need to lose about 4 billion people to extinction.

It's not goofy.  I have a peer in the extended family who managed to make it very large in the stock market on a single stock, 3 homes in various parts of the country, retired from his VP  job at a Mutual Fund, likely near a centimillionaire or close,  who advises $5 million clients in his after work life.

Talked with him at a family gathering and,  having a lot of respect for his intelligence, (his skull can hardly contain his brain) asked him about his thoughts on how his grandchildren, children, and great grandchildren are going to earn a living, and if he gets together with a group of men similarly well off to discuss the future.

He replied that none of his family have to worry about the future, financially. They will be trust fund offspring for the next 100 yrs.  When he and the other guys get together all they talk about is how to protect and enhance their wealth thru Private placements, and their health.

He is not concerned about the 99%, being firmly ensconced in the 1%. I thought he might apply his intelligence to the problems of the 99% forgetting he, like other multimillionaires have made certain their progeny are substantially above the upper upper milddle class.

His solution as to how the 99% are going to make out with all the jobs being taken over by computers and robots and a living wage and benefits being harder and harder to come by, even with formerly solid careers in accounting, the sciences Education and business administration disappearing, his answer was: Entrepeneurship.

In other words, inventing their own jobs,  likely several times over in a career lifetime.  (here I tuned him out since he obviously has not spent much time thinking about this solution, which is impossible for the vast unwashed).  Even his own kids have not been able to get careers going and relying on him to get them jobs, businesses, government work, like Judges.

The formidable task ahead for the young, middle aged, and those not born yet is going to result in the United States becoming like all others, a third world country, like Britain, where most people live a meager life on the dole.

We are locked into a permanenrt state of being where the 1% will have it all and the rest of humanity is on their own.

Good insight. There was a time not too long ago when I thought I might be headed to some rarified heights of financial independence and it was amazing how little you can care about the world, politics and so forth. It was then that I realized that 401k's and IRAs were the "poor man's" retirement and that it really did not matter what the governmnt did or did not do since I was on my way to be a viceroy of the universe or so I thought. I did not care about dems or rebubs giving money to both parties. An election outcome would not affect me.

Well, it all did not work out as I planned. So here I am trying to figure out which way the "wind" is blowing and hoping I don't get trampled under foot by events outside my control.

People will invent their own jobs. We have before, and we will again. The job I do didn't exist when I was a teenager.

Is that going to work for everyone? No. But then even though I've had a good education, I certainly wasn't smart enough to invent all of the stuff that had to be in place in order for my job to exist - even though I'm more or less competent to do the job itself. That was a cooperative effort, headed by people who have made out well during the Information Revolution - Gates, Ellison, Jobs, Andreesson, etc. So how is my situation really that different from one of the "vast unwashed?" As far as I can see, the only difference is that I had enough intelligence and education opportunities to be qualified to do a job in the 'new' economy.

I think we need a more encompassing plan to build a global economy that works for everyone, including the "vast unwashed," and there's nothing impossible about doing that. In some sense, every job that doesn't directly contribute to fulfilling the basic requirements of life - clean air, water, and food, secure shelter, energy, clothing, medical care, and education, is from a certain perspective 'fake.' It's an entertainment expense.

In other words, it's optional. It's something we choose to spend time and effort and resources on rather than spending them on making sure that everyone's basic needs are taken care of first. It's not really logical, because it slows the long-term rate of progress by promoting conflict, and it contributes to vast amounts of human misery, but the allure of the future is so strong, it causes the .01% to want to drag it into the present as fast as possible, regardless of expense, as long as they get to enjoy the benefits of getting their Christmas presents from the future early, and essentially for free. They get away with that as long as enough of we-who-could-change-things are content with watching their consumption, dreaming it might be ours too some day, and in the mean-time remain sated with their lifestyle and technology hand-me-downs and the propaganda used to justify the whole shit-show

But the economy shifts its focus because of the mass actions of individuals, not because of policy. So if, as a species, we wake up and decide to start valuing those businesses that work towards providing the basic needs for everyone in the world, and those businesses that are devoted to training several billion minds that no longer have to spend most of their mental energy just figuring out how to survive until the next day - if we figure out a way to 'turn on' all of that idle human brain-power, just watch how quickly the wealth of that new economy surpasses what passes for 'rich' in the world we currently inhabit.

Henry VIII probably thought he was rich too, but by modern standards, in many ways, he wasn't. He had a lot of power, sure. But so what? He didn't have penicillin or Netflix. I wouldn't trade my life experience for his, would you? Our descendants, presuming we're clever enough to stick around long enough to have them, will look back at the 'wealthy' of this era in the much the same way (I hope).

And yes, I realize that not every third world mind is going to suddenly turn into a 'little Einstein' just because they no longer have to worry about food, water, housing, power, security, or medical care and they have high-bandwidth access to the very best educational content we can produce. The vast majority will probably want to be high all day and immersed in virtual worlds. They'll be lining up for The Matrix, once it's offered to them.

Is that really such a bad thing? It would be cheaper than imprisoning them, and a hell of a lot more just than killing them.

For my part, I'll stave off boredom with games of Chess and gardening - YouTube tutorials to play piano; and join the Navy in hopes of another war. If none comes, I'll ride the ships, writing poetry and learning whatever trade they'll ply me to. I"ll Sit in Churches, wishing I could have the Pastors' wife, and waiting for Kingdom come, all the while vacillating between my appalling lack of masturbatory control - and my inability to seduce even one women. Top that off with the conscience thought of many an Evangelist: that most of humanity will spend an eternity in hell-fire, and I may become dejected, to say the least. A woman - foolish enough to settle down, would lift my spirits. She'd have to be content with little, or course, not upset by fits of melancholy and impressed by silence, that comes from the voice of the poor, the cowardly and the comfortable. She'd imagine me grave, and inflate my already exaggerated sense self of worth with her lies.

Though, the ZH community’s likes' will be a happy substitute until then.

God Bless
