There are tons of republicans on welfare all across the south and southeast. I even know some hardline republicans who fake disability so they don't have to work and then they bitch about black people being on the government dole. Never underestimate a person's ability to rationalize and live counter to their belief system.

Many variables are not considered. Is the respondent a business owner or a union member. Those differences make up the thinking of the person. Anyone who owns a business hates big government or they have been subsidized. Anyone who still believes unions work on the behalf of employees is a fool.

Even smart people I know still engage in this left vs right, liberal vs conservative drama. Let me tell you, it's 100% bullshit! Both parties are controlled by the same bunch, but to satisfy "democracy" there must be at least 2 parties and they intend to keep it that way. Most of the "debate" we hear from MSM is almost scripted on the same old topics, welfare, abortion, gay rights. It's all a smokescreen to divert our attention from what they're really doing.
