Fed Mouthpiece Jon Hilsenrath Furious "Stingy" US Consumers Refuse To Buy The "Recovery" Propaganda

Tyler Durden's picture

No commentary necessary on this piece originally posted on the Wall Street Journal by Jon Hilsenrath (the same ad hoc, trial ballooning Fed mouthpiece whose work as it relates to the Federal Reserve has to be precleared by the Federal Reserve itself as we first reported five years ago).

And no, to our best knowledge, this is not the WSJ transforming into the Onion.

from HILSENRATH’S TAKE: A LETTER TO STINGY AMERICAN CONSUMERS

Dear American Consumer,

This is The Wall Street Journal. We’re writing to ask if something is bothering you.

The sun shined in April and you didn’t spend much money. The Commerce Department here in Washington says your spending didn’t increase at all adjusted for inflation last month compared to March. You appear to have mostly stayed home and watched television in December, January and February as well. We thought you would be out of your winter doldrums by now, but we don’t see much evidence that this is the case.

You have been saving more too. You socked away 5.6% of your income in April after taxes, even more than in March. This saving is not like you. What’s up?

We know you experienced a terrible shock when Lehman Brothers collapsed in 2008 and your employer responded by firing you. We know stock prices collapsed and that was shocking too. We also know you shouldn’t have taken out that large second mortgage during the housing boom to fix up your kitchen with granite countertops.  You’ve been working very hard to pay off this debt and we admire your fortitude. But these shocks seem like a long time ago to us in a newsroom. Is that still what’s holding you back?

Do you know the American economy is counting on you? We can’t count on the rest of the world to spend money on our stuff. The rest of the world is in an even worse mood than you are. You should feel lucky you’re not a Greek consumer. And China, well they’re truly struggling there just to reach the very modest goal of 7% growth.

The Federal Reserve is counting on you too. Fed officials want to start raising the cost of your borrowing because they worry they’ve been giving you a free ride for too long with zero interest rates. We listen to Fed officials all of the time here at The Wall Street Journal, and they just can’t figure you out.

Please let us know the problem. You can reach us at any of the emails below.

Sincerely,

The Wall Street Journal’s Central Bank Team

-By Jon Hilsenrath

Yes, dear broke American consumers which once made up the world's most vibrant middle class: please stop being such a nuisance and source of confusion to the nice people at the Fed and their $4.5 trillion in direct injections into the offshore bank accounts of America's wealthiest 1% and please write to Hilsenrath and let him know what the problem is at Jon.Hilsenrath@wsj.com.

More people are realizing that they have the power to destroy the FRN because WE create them when we get loans. So we stop getting loans and allow the compound nature of the function to work it's magic.

Tipping point is coming too, as the US Gov cannot expand the debt exponentially anymore.  And the FED is out of shit to buy with conjured joobucks that will expand the debt exponentially.

So we are winning. Fuck off and die banksters.

(Either that or people are just flat ass broke, but I am in a good mood and like Mulder, I Want to Believe)

The fact that this even got written and published in a MSM outlet is a clear and obvious tell.

The Fed is bluffing that it has an open-ended straight on the flop.

In fact, the Fed is holding 2-7 off-suit, and threatening to go all-in.

They're laying the groundwork to cast the blame on someone else when it does all go belly-up.  Be the scapegoat is Congress, HFT algos, or the recalcitrant "consumer" that won't spend despite the Fed's beneficence.

I'd say that would be beyond easy. In fact, I think we've reached a point where it's been so easy that what we are seeing now is either pure complacence OR the grab what you can as you head out the door.

If that is not an onion piece, I'll be godsmacked!

Haviing lived two significant booms in the US (dot con and housing), I try and tell people here about how we are being led up and down the garden path to the same fate as America, but no one listens.

So, India's hilsen WRATH would have nothing to complain about. India is in spend your debt heaven....

And so it goes....

Have another green, sir.

I haven't been offered anything close to 0%, and I get offers in the mail every freaking day.  They've even taken to calling my phone.  The credit card offers I get average about 4.25%, the auto loan offers average about 3.75%, the mortgage refinance offers average about 3.3%.  The entities making these offers?  Those are the fuckers that get 0% loans, thanks to Funny Money Benny and Smellin' Yellin.

The banksters are making noise about charging us to hold our savings (NIRP) and threatening to ban cash; we know the end is near.  Cyprus was the warning shot across my bow, and I yanked everything I had in the bank that day.  There is no way I am borrowing any money from these assholes.  Number 1, I don't need it.  Number 2, I have zero debt and very much intend to keep it that way, because I predict they're going to bring back debtor's prisons and I have no desire to occupy a cell.  Number 3, I know that debt is not money and I prefer to spend my fiat buying real money.  You know, the shiny kind that clinks together and seems to have a magnetic attraction to lake bottoms.

In conclusion, fuck you with a splintered 2x4, Hilsenrath.

Well, let's see...

You sell our children to the banks so they can get an education, which doesn't look very promising job prospect wise for about 90% of the graduates thanks to flooded job markets, not to mention that they've probably racked up some rather high interest rate credit cards to boot, partying and all, and then of course they'll probably go out and get even deeper into debt purchasing a home, furniture, and a nice car with all of this "great credit" they now have thanks to predatory banksters.  You cannot comprehend economically what the banks are doing to our nation, yet you call yourself an educated person who understands?

Obviously the only thing you understand is, the economy is tanking, but don't blame it on the broke consumers who are in debt up to their eyeballs, nor blame those uneducated moms who are going to the pay day / quick cash lenders to get raped weekly with 400+% interest on short term loans, and don't blame those dead beat dads who just sold what little things of worth they had to the innumerable pawn shops you have on almost every freaking city block now...

No, if you want to blame someone, blame the banksters, blame wallstreet, blame regulators, and blame capitalism, for they are thriving and alive, but at the expense of "We the people".

If you want the truth, here it is, there is a war going on out there, it's the haves vs the have nots, the haves are winning, and the have nots can do nothing to stop the corruption, extortion, theft via legislation, and who can stop the almighty military who feels the need to step into countries to serve them democracy?  The part that I find amazing is, the rich fags believe that everyone is suppose to bow and worship the mandates and thievery they've perpetuated upon the 99% for how long now?  GET FUCKING REAL WITH YOURSELVES.

    I sent the following letter...

The problem, Jon, is that you are believing your own bullcrap. Most Americans are insolvent if not technically bankrupt.

When the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes U3 as the reported Unemployment Rate, as you well know, there are five other categories. (U1 through U6). Besides that does not take into account the fact that many people have just disappeared off of the roles. You are believing fictitious numbers, Jon. John Williams over at Shadowstats has a more accurate rate of unemployment and it sits well above 20%. That is reflective of what I see in my community. I live in Southern Cal, San Diego East County. This is one of the richest areas in the Nation. And it is bad here. I can only imagine how horrific it is elsewhere. If you think that the average American's credit is any better then you still do not understand what the Housing Bubble did to American's Credit Scores. Bankruptcies stay on Credit Reports for SEVEN YEARS...maybe even TEN YEARS. People who lost their homes due to foreclosures and due to their loss of quality jobs during the last bust STILL HAVE NOT RECOVERED. That was such a widespread and pandemic bust. It affected MOST AMERICANS ADVERSELY. Then you write about "recovery"? There has been a recovery for the wealthiest few. That is who you associate with in your dealings. Therefore since you see that they have recovered your own bias has you erroneously believe that everyone has recovered...which is the farthest from the truth. For the vast majority of Americans there has been no recovery. That is why your journal has lost CREDIBILITY. We all know that it is bullcrap. It is hard to spend money when you donot have any money or any credit or any quality job. And without the consumer to spend you will find that there are limits, Jon, actual limits. Yes the Fed is about to cut off the easy money. That is the only source which has been keeping that Stawk Market afloat. There certainly has not been any REAL EARNINGS to justify the high Stawk Prices. And when Mister Yellen (She is such a shrew after all...) decides to elevate the interest rates by  lousy 25 basis point, along with the Greek Default that will send Warren Buffet's proverbial "Weapon of Financial Mass Destruction", the $1.5 QUADRILLION DOLLAR Derivative Market into a state of imbalance, due to the CDS claims, and subsequential Foreign Central Bank cascading failures THEN... ...the stingy American will be the least of your problems. Jon...All of those numbers reported by the Government. THEY ARE ALL FAUX INDICATORS. It is fake. It is FANTASY...It is MAKE BELIEVE. And then you do not even realize how arrogant you sound in your open letter? You want to rub our faces in it? Perhaps you ought to read Zerohedge.com and start listening to Greg Hunter. At least you will get some truth. end text... I hope that he reads it. Somehow I doubt that he will.

Demonstrate that John's Unemployment figures are not believable.

It's pretty clear he's just adding a % onto the government figure, which is demonstratably an inaccurate way to calculate unemployment.

Williams isn't providing any evidence. He has nice charts, a theory I concur with, but no evidence of scientic rigor. He argues that he uses the old computational methods for aquiring his figures, but he doesn't do the job of showing what those are.

I agree its useful to look at the "long term discouraged" workers, but that is not a steady figure. Williams says it is. Therefore, I can only doubt his computations because it's ridiculous to say, "Hey in 1994, X% of people were dropped from the official number of unemployed because they were long term discouraged, and that figure is exactly the same today as it was then, plus some additional amount from the 2008 crash."

He doesn't tell us where that measurement comes from.

Even if he did, telling people that U6 + long term unemployed = the real level of unemployment which is roughly 23 percent is a bit incredulous, even if it's technically accurate because U6 is kinda bullshit stat to begin with.

This is a good example of how statistics are a type of lie (as commonly described by Mark Twain). They can be technically true, but also misleading.

The other thing is under employment as well TT.So if someone works a few hours here and there every week they're counted as being in the work force.

Down here in Oz the official rate is 6.3% but if you factor in casuals and under employed(especially and very worrisome youth unemployment)you would probably think 9 to10% would be a more accurate figure.

    Wed, 06/03/2015 - 14:33 | 6160049 SeanJKerrigan
    SeanJKerrigan's picture

It's a deceiving question, because Shadowstats is based on government reports, plus whatever metric Williams decides to add on to it. If the government is lying about the numbers then Williams numbers are still wrong.

I've long maintained that the government (for the most part) doesn't need to produce false figures, because most people don't know how to read the BLS reports correctly anyway. Obfuscation is way more effective as a method of control than outright lying, which can be more easily exposed. Proving that the government statistics are misleading is a lot less sexy, and doesn't get the kind of play it should. The outcome is the same, people believe things are better than they are, but the idea that the government needs to lie in order for that to happen is false.

Dear Wall Street Journal Central Bank Team,

I'd be happy to go out and purchase many of the luxury items you banksters use to calculate consumer spending, but most of my income has been tied up in purchasing daily necessities (food, shelter, clothing, energy, transportation, Ag, Au, Pb) for the last seven years. I don't have a 2nd/HELOC/refi to deal with, and don't have granite countertops in my home.

Perhaps if you tribal fucksticks would stop skimming every transaction, stop buying/employing politicians through bribes and coercion, and return what you've stolen from me and others like me over the course of my lifetime - including and especially the return of the power to print currency in lieu of using sound money - I'd actually have some wealth to contribute to 'improving the economy'.

So, until that time, I am unable to participate in your skimming scam erroneously entitled an 'economy'. And, until that time comes - and it will, one way or another - please feel free to improve the mood of the 'consumer' by sodomizing yourselves with splintered broom handles and broken glass bottles.

Never mind the obvious fact that any truly sustainable increase in demand can ONLY come from saving.

Central banks not only debase the currency, but everything that relies upon it, like society for instance.

People (outside of ZH) don't know what money is, where it comes from, whom it benefits. Even in countries going through one hyperinflationary crisis after another, people go right back to using paper money. They ignore precious metals, instead buying up depreciating assets like cars and home electronics. People are ill informed and don't learn from their own mistakes or from history.

They're only capable of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

Like Banzai and Horseman I do political satire, mostly for economics bloggers. Sometimes I post images here. I use photoshop at home or during the lunch break at work. Here at ZH we know the identities of the puppeteers - Bernanke, Yellen, Krugman, Dimon, Blankfein, Warren, Boehner, Buffet, Soros, Icahn etc. Yet, every time I work on an image, someone walks by and asks: "Who's that?" Not a single person I know even recognizes Bernanke. The only faces they are familiar with belong to Obama, Kerry and the Kardashians. They think that the 2008 crash was caused by Madoff.

People think I'm weird for taking interest in money, history, geopolitics and the Constitution and avoid engaging in conversations. There was just one time when I ran into someone who didn't think I was crazy. That person, as it turns out, was a fellow ZH reader. What a breath of fresh air that was!

I own a small business of thirty years. I have savings but it has been no small feat to retain any over the last six years or so. With sales sliding, showing moments of promise (just enough to keep me in the game) and then dumping (like it is now) and burning money waiting on the "next" recovery, it has made it impossible to spend. I'll admit it. I'm a coward. I'm not rich and when my savings are gone, there is no way to get it back. I have no IPO up my sleeve, no once in a lifetime ponzi to sell, just my labor.

I'm sitting here, business is shit, I want to spend, to expand, to do SOMETHING, but I can't in any good conscience do it. It feels like the dumbest bet in history at this point. Admitted I have spent too many years following ZH and I'm sure my mind is completely poisoned, but listening to these arrogant asses that are whining because I am not spending enough to make their fucked up economic theories come true...PISSES ME OFF!

Sure, I understand consumer spending is what sustains an economy, and sure, I understand to not spend will have repercussions...but fuck them.

IT IS THEY, THE BRILLIANT ECONOMIC PLANNERS WHO HAVE CREATED THIS FUCKED UP MESS, AND FOR THEM TO EXPECT US TO THROW OURSELVES IN THE LINE OF FIRE TO SAVE THEIR DUMB ASSES IS THE MOST ABSURD AND NIHILISTIC THING I HAVE EVER HEARD.

The ship is sinking and while continuing to bail would seem at first glance productive, all it is doing is buying time while the "owners" make their way to the life boats. I say fuck them. I will skimp and conserve for as long as I can. I have done all the bailing I'm going to do.

Harry Dent nailed the reason people at least the Boomers are no longer spending in his first book "the long winter ahead" and went into much more detail over domestic and global demographic patterns in his recent book "The Demographic Cliff".  I really suggest reading it or getting it on Audio (as I did) its very informative.  Basically according to him, the US will not see spending start to pickup until about 2023, Southern and central Europe is toast along with China and Japan.  The next great expansive economy will be India followed up by some south east Asian countries.

All based on the assumption that we go quietly into the night. No fuss, no muss, just taking it.

I don't think so. We not only have his demographic patterns but political ones that could be even more important, for they are conjuring a social clash between all of the competing parties. We are watching as the dependency class realize that their teet O plenty is drying up, while the cops are caught in a war largely of political origins. Watch Baltimore for I think they may be the print going forward. Police will have their slowdown on calls for violent and major theft calls. They will watch as the hood goes nuts and just wait for the citizens to offer them just about anything for protection....just like the bankers did. This is going to swirl about the drain, first wealth will go quickly followed by escalating violence. They have successfully indoctrinated ALL OF US to believe we are justified in just about any act of self preservation, but more explicitly revenge and "justice". Once everyone is at each other's throats, it will be relatively easy to pick desired winners and losers.

Poople have no money. A paycheck of minimum wage works out to, perhaps, 35 hrs X $8 = $280 per wk. before tax.  Due to the fact tha most workers have no Cayman Island accts. they pay tax on that... so take 35 hrs X 52 weeks  =$14500 and take off tax.

    that is

HOW ON EARTH CAN ONYONE LIVE ON THIS???  Even double that with 2 people working? and a 2 kids?   That is well below any cost of uf living.  Say 2 people with min. wage jobs....below any level and more so when food prices accelaerate.

No matter the dsguise of food inflation by gov.  All food/utility inflation is going through the roof.  Cost of feeding a family.  Try to do it on minimum wage  Costt of utility is being inflated by the buyout of public assets by private co.s  (Enron never ended but just migrated)

SURE do like tto see Wall St. fines and bonuses.  Must be nice to enslave and spit an SPIT and SPIT again and again and again on anyone wh works for any job you did not sell out.  We as workers are being spit upon. We are being taxed. Corps. locate elsewhere  AND pay no tax.

How DARE I prepare for an uncertain future and not totally trust your cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die promises that you'll pay all my medical needs and for my eventual (like that's going to happen, ha!) retirement. Oh well at least I HAVE a job unlike a lot of my friends, and at least I don't have any student loans to pay off like almost my entire peer group thanks to the generosity of my parents.

Borderline retarded with the same death wish the banksters and wall street boys have.  I saw guillotine mentioned at least twice in the WSJ comments.  The preferred method there seems to be rope from lamp posts though. Tomato/Tomata.

so it is satire? Honestly, I have no clue what to think about such a letter, and your opinion that it is meant as satire, albeit from someone that is not in the position to make such, seems to me the most likely one

reminds me how written comments about religious matters can't be satirized or treated with sarcasm without a clear "/S", just because every extreme position has a few true believers

imo this is quite serious, if a known "FED Mouthpiece" writes this way. "heavy sarcasm is a possible sign of depression" is something a cute psychologist used to tell me often, long time ago

Yeah, guys like that should not write stuff like this. When I first started reading, I got a little angry - then I was like "he's not serious" then it was like mabey he is and he needs his butt kicked!

One way or the other, he just needs his butt kicked.

Hey, ObamaCare made it LAW that the government can ORDER people to spend money on whatever the government deems appropriate - or go to jail.  Next up, Dear Leader Obama uses his pen and phone to order everyone to spend more - or go to jail?  It is completely feasible - and ruled constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

    RECOVERY!!!!!

I've heard it said, that they'd shove a carrot in Ed's ass, in order to make his lips move... to make it look like he was talking.

I wonder if they do the same thing with Hilsenrath.

LOL. Logged in just to upvote.

NSA's new mission will be to spy on all non-patriots who are not consuming enough. Unpatriotic non-consumers will then get a visit from a SWAT team that kills their pet animals, sends family members to hospital with injuries, and destroys doors, windows, and household belongings.

Result: spending is boosted TREMENDOUSLY. And everyone gets the message. Thank you BIG BROTHER! All hail the PATRIOTIC REKOVERY!

Careful Cracker, that's actually a pretty good idea for the Elites because either people spend money and they make money out of that, or they don't spend money so they jail them, and as most of the prisons are private or going private, they'll make money out of that as well because they own them.

In effect theyt can't lose with your idea :)

FDR tried it in the thirties as a "retained earnings tax" trying to force money out of savings. The Supreme court stopped him then, but we are living in more modern times where the constitution actually breathes as a living organ, adaptable to the times with simple interpretive decrees. Its breath is rotten and stinks of death.

True. Take all his riches away and send this asshole off into the real world. Let him get a job without contacting anybody who already knows him. Just go cold into reality and see what a pathetic old guy with a PhD in Economics can get for work.

Then, when he's working for $10 or $12 an hour let him see how much he has to spend after food, rent and utilities.

Nothing more despicable on the face of the earth than rich fuckers who have had a greased path to success their whole life trying to tell the rest of us how we should live our lives.
