Greece Breaks America's Heart, Will Sign MOU With Russia For Gas Pipeline

Tyler Durden's picture

Greece has received what The New York Times recently described as “dueling sales pitches” on two proposed natural gas pipelines.

One proposal comes from Russia, where the Kremlin is keen to use the tumultuous negotiations between Athens and creditors to advance Moscow’s energy and geopolitical interests. Moscow hopes to essentially buy Athens’ participation in the Turkish Stream pipeline which, as a reminder, will allow Russia to bypass Bulgaria by piping gas through Turkey, then through Greece, Serbia, and Hungary straight to the Austrian central hub.

(Greece's options)

Some have suggested over the past several months that Athens may be able to secure an advance on its potential profits from the pipeline, thus giving Greece some much needed breathing room in what have a series of suffocating negotiations with the troika. This would suit Vladimir Putin just fine as it would allow him to solve the South Stream ‘problem’ while securing a Greco-Russo economic and energy alliance just as Europe debates how to proceed with regard to the conflict in Ukraine. For its part, Europe has responded by filing antitrust charges against Gazprom.

The US proposal involves The Southern Gas Corridor, a project aimed at “improving the diversity of the EU’s energy supply” — in other words, it’s an attempt to help break Gazprom’s stranglehold. Essentially, the corridor will allow the EU to tap into Caspian gas via a series of connecting pipelines running from Azerbaijan to Italy.

(The US-endorsed pipeline project)

Early last month, US State Department envoy Amos Hochstein met with Greek foreign minister Nikos Kotzia to make the pitch and told Greece that participating in The Southern Gas Corridor would help make the country attractive to investors again.

(Hochstein and Kotzia in May)

It appears Moscow may have made the better sales pitch (or perhaps it was the fact that Russia lobbied Athens far more aggressively) because Greece is set to sign an MOU for the Greek portion of The Turkish Stream pipeline in June.

RT has more:

Greece plans to sign a document on political support for Gazprom’s Turkish Stream project at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June, its Energy Minister announced on Monday. The country plans to invest $2 billion in its construction.

A memorandum on political support for the gas pipeline project will be prepared by June 18-20, when the International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2015) will be held in Russia’s St. Petersburg, Greek Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis announced on Monday…

Greece’s part of the pipeline, which will be delivering Russia’s gas on from the Turkish border, will cost some $2 billion, Lafazanis said in an interview with the Rossiya24 channel. The minister said that a Greek state company will be involved in the project, adding that there has been “big interest” from many companies wishing to take part in the construction and future operation of the pipeline…

The new pipeline, which Gazprom plans to build from Turkey to the border with Greece, will be part of the Turkish Stream project aimed at delivering Russian gas to Europe without the participation of Ukraine. Russia intends to completely abandon its gas supplies through Ukraine by 2019. The EU would construct the pipelines leading further on from Greece.

According to Lafazanis, the Western-backed proposal and The Turkish Stream are not competitors and Greece will, if it can, participate in both initiatives.

Via The Greek Reporter:

“We do not considered them to be rivals. On the contrary, we think they both contribute to energy supply of European countries. That’s why it is odd that the Russian project is raising concern and doubts in the US and the European Union. We will not submit to the interests and wishes of any third country. Greece is nobody’s property. We move based on the interests of our people and our national interests. The country must become a development hub for Europe’s energy supply."

The US and Europe of course do not see things that way as indicated by the following quote from The US Embassy in Athens:

The United States is concerned that Greek consideration of an extension of a “Turkstream” pipeline across Greece will not increase energy diversification, may be of concern to EU competition authorities, and is not a long-term solution to Greece’s energy needs.

Essentially, Greece and the West have just suffered a bad breakup, and the West is not keen on Greece dating anyone else for the foreseeable future and so presumes to exercise a kind of post-split overbearing paternalism to ensure Athens can fend for itself in a world occupied by anti-NATO vultures who have been circling for the better part of six months. Greece, however, is prepared to make its own way.

Or, as Vladimir Putin puts it: "

"Just because Greece is debt-ridden, this does not mean it is bound hand and foot, and has no independent foreign policy."

Now the next move (if Tsipras has the khidhia) is to default on all external debt in lieu of war reparations, introduce the drachma and issue an IPO for the Greek gas pipeline company, which can only be subscribed in drachmes.

I imagine the tourist spots (e.g Myconos, Santorini, etc.) will be the same, but Athens will be quite different.  There was a basic but very cheap hotel in Exarchion I stayed at a couple of times, with a nice square nearby for cocktails, that I will not stay in this time as that district is where there has been a lot of troubles.  I guess it just means shelling out more bucks for a 3 to 4 star hotel with security so as to do Athens, the Parthenon, and the museums before heading out to the islands....

It will be interesting to see.  It seems like the Russians typically make the better trade offer (see Ukraine), but America (I guess) sees itself as a Mercedes brand that people will choose over any other consideration.

Greece sure will get some blowback from the west for this.  Does Greece now ruin the unanimous vote Europe needs to extend the Russian sanctions are part of this deal?

Maybe this is just more game theory being played against the common Greek.  Did they really raid the pension plans and central accounts and then transfer that money to the foreign bankers with any intention of seperating from the EU later?   If so it was an incredible blunder.

More likely this is another attempt to distract the common Greek by giving hope while continuing to raid and plunder the country on behalf of the foreign bankers.

If it is built then all profits will simply be funneled to the foreign bankers as loan payments.  Or it will be used as collateral for new loans with the intention that ownership be transfered to outside interests in the near future.

yeah, only the problem is that Greek Nazis are not quite Nazis but hardcore nationalists (meaning they hate the USA and bankers to the bone). It would be impossible to use them as a puppet, as they would get out of control much faster than those silly fools in Kiev. I heard one of their leaders say something like: "We have so many suicides in Greece and that is so sad and unnecessary. I would know how to solve it fast." "How?" "Well, some bombs placed in the banks...those are the ones who need to be eliminated." I kind of like that "Nazi" after this speech:-) Of course, they would also start purging the immigrants and that spoils my admiration. But those words: "Just some bombs to the banks..."

Putin is playing chess against us - and winning.  So what if ISIS takes down Syria?  Now with Turkey and Greece inside the Russian sphere, Russia now has a second tier of roadblocks against Middle Eastern natural gas reaching Europe.  While not stopping any competing pipelines, the economic reality is that any 'new gas' from the Middle East -- if it ever gets there -- will likely tie into the Russian controlled pipeline and distribution system -- effectively giving Russia control over the Middle East natural gas.  Thus Russia can levy a tax on this new Middle East natural gas, and can both literally and figuratively suck off either some of the gas or some of the profits.  Well played, Mr.Putin!

http://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-pc-california-senate-approves-health-coverage-for-some-immigrants-here-illegally-20150602-story.html

The state Senate on Tuesday approved a hotly debated measure that would allow many immigrants in the country illegally to sign up for special healthcare programs that would offer the same benefits as Medi-Cal.

The action comes just days after lawmakers significantly scaled back the plan, which originally would have offered state-subsidized Medi-Cal to people in the country without authorization.

State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) said his proposal provides “what we can realistically achieve now” for the estimated 2 million people in the state illegally.

“We are talking about our friends. We are talking about our neighbors and our families who are denied basic healthcare in the richest state of this union,” Lara told his colleagues.

America has a broken leg in John Kerry, a broken promise in relation with Saud, a broken ethics in relation to Patriot Act and Nsa, a broken moneyline in FED print to infinity, a broken hand which has lost its invisibility in WS steroid pumped shenanigans and derivative scams, a frigid market in commodites and an insane Congress now pretending that debt is asset and bad is good for USA.

So a broken heart is the least of its current concerns. And Greece is moar grease on the flywheel of Casino games gone mad.

When was the last time an empire lost its head and stuck it you know where in deep denial?

Interesting interview that discusses a wide variety of topics, not just the Middle East.  I loaded the transcript, and mp3 for download if you'd rather not watch the 25 minute YouTube clip.

Personally i do not believe ANY of these Snide EU leaders.

Greece ( current .Gov) for example should have:-

1) Opened up the contract Goldman helped them pen on entry ( this would expose the treason )
2) Jailed Samaras & The Previous Government , pending . .
3) HUNG Papandreou

Will Spain try Rajoy that corrupt POS for treason?

SLAGS every fucking one of them.

Greece will go with Putin because he always slaughters the Americans on every move. Additionally, the Russian Federation is a BRICs member country and they have the wearwithall to get Greece into better circumstances. America has utilized the Greek people, and Greece, as their personal bitch for too long, and Greece is well aware of that, as is the rest of the World. American politicians are anal retentive, as are the American Banks, and banksters. Who in their right mind would craft a deal with an anal retentive sadist like Goldman Sachs, TBTF, American Gubberment, et cetera, when we all know that America is completely, and unequivocally, insolvent?

No debt's in rare form.  Kinetic Democracy raining down.  Ha!  Funny.

My comment:

Greece is a sovereign country.  Having debt outside of your law is a NO NO.  Debt instruments that vector away from your law should be forbidden.  I don't expect for modern economists to understand this because they are brainwashed.

Putin  has it right, even though Greece is in debt they can still maneuver.  All countries can invoke their sovereignty and tell international creditors "we are not going to pay for fraud."  In most cases, debt instruments are fraud, and are demanding excessive and usurious gains.

Austerity is to grab real productive assets in exchange for fraud debts.  The debt is canceled during the magick swap.

In this way, Greek people become debt-slave share croppers, in the land of their forefathers.  Foreign Oligarchs then own Greece's means of production.

Same goes for citizens of the sovereign states currently comprising the USA.  They should not consider themselves bound by the debts created by an out-of-control agent in Washington, D.C. which has illegally allowed a group of bankers to bankrupt the nation with a printing press.

Thank God, George Mason gave the states the option of an Article V convention at which they, and they alone, have the power to amend the their agent out of existence in the Constitution.

However, for this to happen, citizens of each state have to educate themselves, and their state legislatures, about the power that they have to radically change, or kill off, Washington, D.C. and then push their legislators to make it happen.

Otherwise, just like the airline attendant says, if the plane goes down, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

>>> Greece will, if it can, participate in both initiatives.

If both Russian and Azerbaijan pipelines are built then there can be real price competition between them. And Turkey stands to gain enormously from that since Turkey has large domestic needs. It also means that moving energy hungry industry to the Greece/Turkey border (near the Turkish hub) will give that industrial plant a huge price advantage over industry elsewhere in the EU.

Same megalomaniacal delusionary character surrounded by a crew that's scared to tell them how thigs really are.  One on TV, one in real life, with 8000 nukes.

Oh, and say "Buh-bye" to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.  And even if it does take place in Russia, it will be a re-run of 1980 Olympics when nobody showed up.
