Caught On Tape: Navy Releases Clip Of Russian Warplane "Buzzing" US Destroyer
Last week saw what was seemingly the first 'close encounter' between a US warship (USS Ross) and a Russian Su-24 fighter jet in the Black Sea (after America's "provocative and aggressive" behavior). The fly-by was 'caught on tape' aboard USS Ross and as Alert5 notes was released by The Navy this week who said both the ship and warplane were both in international waters and airspace at that time.

Or hvae atmospheric conditions changed so much that water vapor behaves completely differently than it ever did.

That seems like an exaggeration. According to Wikipedia, the Moskit's normal speed is Mach 2.35, with 2.8 being the fastest it can do. Maybe, there are newer, faster modifications, but Mach 5 seems way out of it...

About 25 yrs ago I was sailing down the Chesapeak having my morning coffee, minding my own business when - I was buzzed by two F16 flying at about 200 ft. Shit! Those things are loud!

In the RAF we flew 100ft routinely over land and water, and sometimes 50ft over water. Buzzed loads of Russian and nato ships - the sailors love it. That SU24 was quite respetfully distant from the Destroyer. No doubt just taking photos as we did.
When my dad went through Navy flight training in 1944 in Pensicola his flight instructor told him to fly his Corsair as low to the ground as he could. Then the FI asked him if that was as low as he could take his bird and he replied in the affirmative. My dad said at that point the FI flew his plane underneath my dads' plane just feet over the tarmac.

My thoughts too, they were at a very safe distance and at most just made their presence known, the only real effect would be a nice 1 plane airshow put on for the visiting warship, hardly something to complain about!

I've had US jets fly closer to my house when they put on an air show over Ft. Lauderdale beaches and nearby areas.
It's a common occurrence by me. 3-4 times a day groups of 2 or 3 fighter jets take off from the local airport to waste fuel / money for now reason at all and deafen the entire city for a minute or so.
Maybe you need to run around in the back yard and throw aluminium flakes into the air as you run in evasive circles? It probably won't do any good but it will give the neighbors a laugh. NEEEEIIIIIIRRRRRRRMMMMM!!!!!!!

Not much of a close approach. We (US Navy) would come that close all the time just to get a visual id. First you get Radar contact then electronic signatures last you get visual. They are taking pictures anc collecting electronic data the whole time. Very normal.

If an Su-24 tried to fly at 100 feet at M.99, the crew of the US ship would be rescuing him from the water - IIRC, the minimum altitude for Su-24's terrain following radar is 200-ish meters.
