Deutsche Bank Head Of Asia-Pac Equities Loses Control Of His $580,000 Ferrari, Kills Innocent Bystander

Tyler Durden's picture

As recently as several months ago, the financial press was surprised when a wave of Deutsche Bank employees, particularly those in the bank's legal department (such as here and here), decided to take their own lives. Now at least one Deutsche Banker, perhaps perturbed by the recent news involving the unexpected departure of his co-CEOs coupled with the even more unexpected raid of the bank's global headquarters, has decided to show the jump from sui- to homicide is a simple one.

Earlier today, Hong Kong police arrested a 48-year-old Deutsche Bank employee on "suspicion of dangerous driving and causing death." The fatal accident happened early on Tuesday at a car park near Deutsche's office at International Commerce Center, across the harbor from the city's financial district.

According to Reuters, the driver was Deutsche's head of Asia-Pacific equities trading, Robert James Ebert, 48, who was behind the wheel of a Ferrari at the time of the accident.

Below is his Linkedin profile:

Police said the arrested driver, whom it identified only as James, had said he lost control of his car. The police said a 53-year-old man, who was next to the barriers, died after suffering serious head and shoulder injuries. He was pronounced dead in the hospital early in the afternoon.

The Apple Daily newspaper also identified the driver as Ebert and said he was driving a black, HK$4.5 million ($580,502) Ferrari 458 Spider, which was in collision with a HK$2.4 million Maserati at the car park entrance before hitting a security guard.

The police said the driver was not charged.  "We are investigating whether the car was driving beyond the speed limit of 30km/h at the time," a police source said.

It is safe to say the answer is yes, as a simple check of the security cameras would confirm.

Ebert was released on bail in the early hours of Wednesday and has to report back in mid-July, the police said.

Ejiinsight adds that Ebert’s car went on to sweep across three barricades and hit the guard, who was pinned to a post at the carpark entrance.

Koo was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead by 2 p.m.

Ebert and the Maserati driver were unhurt. Police said both drivers passed a breathalyser test.

Skid marks stretching 10 meters were found at the entrance of the carpark.

Ebert told police his car had a brake failure. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

So guy drives a car which costs more than most Americans will make in a decade (pretax), crashes in what may have been an improvised drag race, kills an innocent bystander, and promptly posts bail and is allowed to roam, and drive, in freedom.

Meanwhile Nav Sarao rots in the UK's worst prison unable to pay his ridiculous $5 million bail, for the simple reason that he was a good trader and dared to expose the HFTs' rigging to regulators. He faces a maximum sentence of 380 years in jail.

It's ok though: when Stan Fischer and Mark Carney said bankers have to go to prison for "at least" 10 years when caught rigging markets they said nothing about bankers who engage in homicide. It appears the legal system will need a central bank explainer on how to proceed in that specific case.

As a banker he probably had his car insured for 3 times its real value and will actually make money on the accident.

If you think the idea is absurd just look at the airlines.   They MAKE money on air crashes and then book the profits as the "involuntary conversion" of an aircraft.

LOL...yeah, that's it...a half million dollar new Ferrari's has shit brakes at 30mph and wipes out all over the place while smooshing a bystander.  Uh huh...yeah...Ferrari's are so well known for super cars w/ shit brakes.

And oh yeah, Michael Hasting's new Mercedes ENTIRE ENGINE AND DRIVE-TRAIN EXPLODED AND ERUPTED OUT OF THE CAR 150 feet BEFORE the car bumped into a skinny little palm tree and burst into white hot flames.

Check the photos in that link...insane.  Yeah, it's alaways the cars fault, not the idiot drivers or the CIA blowing the car up with overly well-placed thermite charges.  LOL

Thermite is not explosive. it merely burns HOT HOT HOT. With so many cars having electronic throttles and accessible wi-fi entryways into the computer system(s) I would not be surprised if we later found that the throttle was remote controlled.

Hard time in a Hong Kong jail..... Ewwwwwww

What I can't understand is why someone would need a car like that in Hong Kong.

It is not like there are many places one can take the car out and stretch it's legs.

Perhaps a more frugal Aston Martin One-77, McLaren P1 or Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse would have been more appropriate.

I am afraid this HK based banker should not get the accolades for learning the sport of driving in an expensive car to kill poor people on the street.

A top Indian female lawyer from Mumbai deserves more than him...that too last night.

She drove for more than 10 kms...get this..on the wrong side of the road...while she was drunk....and then ended up killing not one but two people...

So what if she was driving a cheaper Audi......she nailed two 99 percenters...there has to be more points for that!.......sarc.

Risk abounds with banksters around.  Speaking of risk,, By my quick look, current M3 in the Euro area is €10.4 Trillion Euros VS €450 Billion in actual cash circulating.  In the US, M2 stands at $10.5 Trillion VS $1.2 Trillion in circulation (Tyler correct these figures if I'm off)  Is it no wonder the 'elites' are seriously considering banning cash?  Digital money is so new, and there is so much of it compared to physical currency it's CRAZY.  Whoever (with)draws first wins.

I think it's time we started using exponential notation for government debt and money in circulation, it's getting difficult to quickly count how many digits there are in these numbers.

That would also have the advantage that the denominations of paper money wouldn't be limited to the available space on a Federal Reserve Note, Euro, etc.  The government could print paper currency denominated in Centillions!

The question is easy to answer...

The banks get a percent of the electronic transaction funds as a fee (typically 3%).  The bank gets little to no precentage on cash transactions.

How do you get a percentage fee on ALL purchases everywhere?

Simple.

Eliminate all cash transactions.

No need for a conspiracy even thought it sure makes this pig a bit sexier to behold...

This is within the confines of a parking garage. Not even on the parking floor by the looks of it. Close to the exit and barriers. I know, I drove with a friend. Older Ferrari but still quite thrilling. Fast yes. But not like a projectile. If he pinned the guy straigt to the wall at 30k, it wouldn't be game over. Lower front end also. The guy could jump the hood easy.

Very weird accident given location (parking garage in HK of all places) and the profile of the driver.

Would help to know which parkade and if the entrance is right off a major road. The banker was driving into the garage. No speedbumps before the barrier by the looks of it? Who was the deceased and why was he standing there? Was it the ticket / cashier box? Doesn't look like it.

The blood stain is on the passenger side of an incoming vehicle. The damage is to the front of the car.

Maybe WB7 can give us some insight. He's familiar with the locale.

The Feds went after Reason.com because a judge was threatened. They are really very protective of their own, which is why it is probably not safe to read the Declaration of Independence aloud in the presence of any Federal agent. Something about it being a duty to oust the bad guys....

Ferrari is too eager to make money, rather than mandate that drivers of such ultra-performance cars take the Ferrari Safety Classes.  Racing classes.

By contrast, years ago, when German tennis star Boris Becker got a new Porsche 959, Porsche made him take racing classes first -- "Lest the horses get away on you", was how they framed it.

I have a blunt potatoe peeler right here that I have been braying with a piece of filthy rat infested lead that is doing nothing, blunting the blade, just waiting for the child molesting cunt that wants to be a woman called 'Miranda, D-Lister' cunt called Tony B.Liar, if anyone wants to use it before I get the chance.

I would cry myself to sleep knowing the blade was even a touch sharper than need be for keeping this cunt alive for at least three weeks.  Perhaps this lads bones might blunt it a bit more than rat infested lead??

Anyways, its here if you want it...

My, how far you have fallen, Zero Hedge. Linking banker suicides to typical collateral damage from spoiled "rich boy" behavior is trashy, and an incredible overreach. Hey Tyler, can you say "mission creep?" This story is someone's personal tragedy, now being used to generate net traffic. Now I know why I have avoided posting here for so long.

Hahaha, I'll take that as a compliment from you, given your above post.

And you're as wishful as yours.  I knew James T. Kirk, and you're no Kirk.

A new revolution is what it's going to take to get our country back from the clutches of tyranny, not the spirit of a past one.

Junior, I commend your idealism.  It's healthy and natural, given your youth and limited experience.

This will change with time, when you've enough robust encounters with Zi'Borgs.

Eventually your youthful idealism and exuberance will morph into pragmatism and guile, when dealing with Invasive Species that does not subscribe to your charming idealism and Starfleet theories.

p.s. A revolution is a revolution, is a revolution. The style (American, French, Russian, Spanish)  only matters insofar that it's an adaption to a country's history, culture and circumstances.

pps. I will concede that ZH has changed, insofar it used to be a site of Forensic Finance & Economics, then added Forensic Politics, and finally sprinkled it (ever more) with tabloid-like click-baiting articles. Maybe it's the New Management that's playing with its biz model (the high-brow segment has plateaud, and they're adding the low-brow segment to fuel site stats), or we have a more impulsive Tyler.  Given the site ads, I'd wager on the former being more likely.

See you on the Set for the next movie, when we get to work together -- just to show those old and young Spocks.  ;-)

Kirk out.

So typical.

People get the cash and go out to buy the Big Ticket toys.

These cars are not playthings.  That's a high-performance system.  Unless you have a lot of experience, or proper training, you can smash yourself up pretty easily.  This is not the first incident ... it's not uncommon on the West Coast.  Probably happens in  lot of places.

Big mistake to do it in Hong Kong. Should have done it in China proper, where you can pay to stay in a luxury jail or pay even more and be allowed to roam the streets as if nothing had happened.

Mess with the State, however, and you get the 9-center in the back of the head and become spare parts.
