'Who' Really Runs Your State?

Tyler Durden's picture

A state's economy is nothing without the businesses that call it home. However, these companies are not created equally - bigger businesses naturally have outsized influence, generating more revenue, employing more people and (at least theoretically) paying more taxes. So given that corporations are now 'people', who really runs your state in this crony-capitalist land of the free?

Some may be surprising: Chevron (not Apple) runs California, Costco (not Microsoft) runs Washington, and Sands run Nevada.

Some are less so: Berkshire Hathaway runs Nebraska, GM runs Michigan, and ExxonMobil runs Texas.

Largest Companies by Revenue in Each State 2015

As Broadview Networks explains,

Using Hoover’s, a D&B Company, we searched through each state’s list of companies to find which had the largest revenue in the last fiscal year.  It was interesting to see how each company’s revenues have changed over the year (for better or worse) and to see if a new largest company had emerged.

At first glance, you may ask, “Where are Apple and Microsoft?”  Yes, these are huge companies but this map is specifically looking at total revenue from the last fiscal year.  If we look at California with Apple vs. Chevron, there is a large discrepancy between market value and total revenues.  Apple’s market value as of March 31, 2015 was $724 billion while Chevron’s was only (and we use “only” lightly) $197 billion.  In terms of revenue, Chevron comes out on top with $203 billion in the last fiscal year while Apple had revenues of $182 billion.

My state is run by the national and transnational entities that donate most to “my representatives” in the US House of Representatives and Senate.

..and there is a “trickle-down” effect to the State legislature as well.

More misinformation. Government is in control in all of these states.

Corporations, which are the bastard offspring of government anyway, are just the current variety of string-pullers.

Would religion, the military, unions, the AGW crowd, Stalin wannabes, organized crime syndicates, some other country's fiat currency, or your mother-in-law be any better?

Government is the poison, this is just one of the types.

Gibberish.

All government at every level owes ultimate fealty to.................................................its creditors. as do 95 percent of corporations.

Spend a few hours with Damon Vrabel on youtube and you will completely understand this fact:

Express Scripts global HQ here in STL is literally so close I could throw a rock their lobby window from my apt across the street. I moved here 7 years ago, they had 1 big building. Today, they're past a dozen, with 6 more under construction and have spread across and down both sides of I-70. They jumped all the way to the fortune 20 in the process. INSANE growth.
People protest Monsanto, also right down the street, but ES could buy them 1000x over, and no one is ever here protesting ES.

Wisconsin is run by the public education rackets that bleed us dry. They are terrified by competition and mercilessly lie about even the least controversial proposals to save a few nickles.

Johnson Controls is a good company for the most part. I do not recall anything that they have done to directly get the taxcows to subsidise their business. They ask for decent treatment so I suppose that is reprehensible in the left lexicon.

That is not to say that there are no companies that work the taxcows from the states to give them irresponsible gifts.

It's basically the "perfect storm" of football popularity down here. Football is (down, under the surface, in the subconscious) a war game, and being as this nation currently stands on the brink of war, football's popularity naturally increases. Down here, football has always been popular due to us hating to suffer under the Yankee yoke, and with us seeing that things are worse than ever and getting worse by the year, people are BIG into this football thing. Nick Saban coming along and returning the Tide back to its former glory after years of lackluster performance was the icing on the cake. You would not believe how many Tide stickers, signs, slogans, street names (seriously), etc you see everywhere. This is Serious Business. If Nick Saban declared tomorrow he had formed a secret army and was planning to overthrow the Alabama government and assume dictatorial powers, in the name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I think a lot of starry eyed people wouldn't even blink.

Alabama is one of the richest states in this nation, actually.....at least if you count the things which matter. Like natural resources, and people who have intelligence and values.

No idea why Regions Bank is so big here; I guess they must have headquarters here or something. We've got plenty of real industry in every part of the state, and plenty of agriculture too. Lots of chickenhouse "owned" by Koch Bros these days.

After TSHTF Regions will go down the drain, Koch Bros will be minding their own business wherever else they live, and the ownership of a lot of these buildings and businesses will be changing hands from corporate conglomerates to local businessmen. Of that I can assure you.

corporations have been legal persons for hundreds of years - they can sue or be sued in court, which is in essence all the term means.

Whenever I see "corporations are now people" I know the person writing is neither someone familiar with Constitutional or common law, and also likely hasn't contemplated the alternative - the inability to sue a company, the ability of government to ban mass produced books if by a 'corporation' leaving only the wealthy the ability to self publish...etc.

Donations to the 2 major parties means significantly more than a state's largest employer.

okay, so how many companies have been arrested, stripped of all wealth and left in prison to rot for bad choice that they made.

Here is the flipside of it all...   ...as a "limited liability person" you can expect individuals to behave the same way.

As far as publishing goes, any fool can publish on the internet now.  Words are not worth shit anymore, actions are.

Have you ever been to Iowa? Then you'd understand. Most boring state in the Union, with the worst radio stations. Any kid unlucky enough to grow up there must hate himself.

Let them continue the monopoly. Once no one participates in crony capitalism, the house of cards fall.

Next emergency measures to bailout the bankers will bring the second ammendment fear within ZIRP money circles.

Now that ZIRP is installed, I wouldn't want to be a employed banker in the United States of America. 318 million people will turn into a Bonnie & Clyde bank withdrawal heist.

Once the funds are not available, bankers will be killed. Manhattan will turn into a fox hunting game. It's been banned in the UK, not US. ;)

The voted civil servants are getting paid under collusion. This is a direct violation under the Constitutional Laws.

Technically, they can be removed from their position under accepting bribes within the penile code. No one seems to remember these active laws.

Just have to say..  In the most hostile to business state in the union, its not big business, but big public employee unions running the state.  Top of the list CTA.  The teachers unions, seiu, ect..  are bankrupting the state and having laws written to enhance thier benefits and pay at the cost of the taxpayer and local economy.  If the republicans ran the state, I would agree that chevron or any other major corporation would hold the biggest purse strings.
