Americans “Looted” Nazi Gold – Reminder of Gold’s Role in Times of Crisis
- Documents uncovered in Washington show American’s seized Nazi gold in last days of war
- Himmler stashed emergency fund of gold and currencies in post office of small Eastern town to protect from bombing of Berlin
- Loot quickly shipped to Frankfurt where trail ends
- Story shows strategic importance of gold in times of crisis

In the last days of the Second World War American troops uncovered a large stash of gold, silver and paper currencies at the post office of a small town in eastern Germany called Plauen. Documents show that the stash was directly linked to SS chief Heinrich Himmler.
The Americans seized the town on 16th April 1945. Documents uncovered in Washington by German historian Peter Heintje show that eleven days later a convoy left the town for Frankfurt.
Apparently the post office of the small town was also a secret branch of the Reichsbank. As the bombing raids on Berlin intensified in 1944 Himmler arranged for the stash to be secreted in the quiet eastern town.
Hitler’s Nazis had looted gold throughout Europe. Indeed we featured the frightening but compelling video which details the plundering of Austrian, Czech, Polish and other national gold reserves and the theft of German and European citizens, especially Jewish people’s gold, for the German Reichsbank back in 2008 – see video here.
On 26th April, 1945, a post office employee was interrogated. “He spoke of a safe in the post office building. In it were 900 kilos of gold mainly in the form of coins, 70 kilos of silver and cash found, ” Heintje told German press.
The key to the safe was not available and so US engineers broke into it with explosives. The bullion was stashed in 35 sacks. The hoard also included one million Swiss francs and 151,560 Norwegian kroner and 98,450 Dutch guilders. The fund would be valued at 32 million euros today.
Only one day transpired between the discovery and accessing the safe and its hurried shipment to Frankfurt. This was because Plauen was in the zone which was to come under Russian control at the end of the war as agreed at the Yalta conference.
Apparently the stash remained in Frankfurt for some time but no documents were found that show its final destination. It is believed that it was shipped to the U.S. as war reparations and likely ended up in Fort Knox or the New York Federal Reserve.
The story is a reminder of the extremely important role gold plays in times of crisis and chaos. Himmler’s stash was predominantly made up of gold and silver bullion as opposed to paper currencies.
The U.S. also placed great importance on gold and it was partly due to its enormous gold hoard that it was able to have the dollar placed on an equal footing with gold at the Bretton Woods conference in July 1944.
With so many factors gravitating towards potential global financial stability and potential chaos today it Is prudent for investors and savers to own and have a healthy allocation to physical gold as financial insurance.

Wow!! Look at how well hoarding all of that gold preserved Himmler's wealth.. ;0)

Today if an invading army, found a hoard of Gold they would just let it laying in the street, since it's not worth anything according to the fed... /s
Good thing the Aliens are hauling it off the planet, we sure don't need it..
Interesting that the 8000 tons of gold seized from the Nazis is about the same as the US's purported gold hoard, no?
There are rumors that much more gold than this piddling amount was found and squirreled away by the US both from Germany and the Japanese controlled lands. It makes some sense, do you think China had no gold before it was overrun? Do you think the Japanese were kind and fair and let the Chinese keep their gold? Where is it now and who controls it? These rumors are the main reason I hesitate when I read how the suppressed gold exchanges are almost out of physical and are about to go bust at any moment. We really don't know how much gold is out there and where it is. Gold is being suppressed and this re-looted gold may be a back-up for the suppression. In other words when we wonder if Goldman and JPM are about to bust their bullion banks we should also wonder if they have a bunch of remelted fillings secretly at their disposal to meet those delivery demands.
It is impossible for the market to run out of gold, because gold is not consumed. Therefore, by definition, the only thing that can change is the price.
Biggest mistake, after supporting the Korean War, that Clement Attlee made was - when coming to power (only a week or two before Hiroshima) was to fail to link up with Charles de Gaulle and together, British and French Armies, to seize Switzerland on a basis of Switzerland having been Nazi collaborators. And to confiscate and share between the two allies all valuables in Switzerland that could not be convincingly proven to have no Axis Powers connections to them (i.e. almost all of them).
a) It was Spencer-Churchill who blocked going after Swiss banks because The City did not want its loot discovered.......there had been some kind of war apparently and stashes were everywhere !!!! Who would have guessed ? Spencer-Churcill also owed a lot of rich men big favours for keeping his finances afloat pre-war. Like Spencer-Churchill and FDR, Attlee was a Freemason and in 1946 Britain was bankrupt - 50% GDP in 1947 was Marshall Aid.
As for Korea there was no choice if the Britsh wanted US help in Greece and in propping up Europe where the Communists were poised to take France. The last thing the British could do was work with de Gaulle who had Communists in his government and anyway he was out of power 1946-1958.
Obviously you have never been to Switzerland. It would be impossible for any country to "seize" Switzerland. Every man in the country is trained in weaponry, and every access route into and out of the country is rigged with explosive charges.
Yeah, yeah. We've all heard that.
I'll bet that meme is way overblown. Give me three armored brigades, plenty of close air support and all the assets at Whiteman AFB and I would crack that nut wide open.
Kelly's Heros, wagon wheel patch, 35 div. Santa Fe Div. I had lots of them as a kid. My dad brought them home from his service in WWII.

+10,000! Sutherland was perfect. The beat tank commander.
I'm surprised at the ratio of silver to gold
Hitler’s Nazis had looted gold So, Rosevelt's Democrats looted gold too. And Stalin's Communists looted everything.
There is the very important WWII story everybody keep quiet about.
Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin had met in Yalta, USSR , from February 4 – 11, 1945. The purpose of this meeting was to work out a post-WW II "New World Order".
At this meeting, communist-sympathizer Roosevelt suggested that he and Stalin would rule the NWO with England taking a back sit. Churchill went ballistic. On April 12, 1945, Roosevelt suddenly died. The autopsy was not performed. Stalin requested an investigation into the Roosevelt death but the new US president Harry Truman had different ideas and had nothing to do with Roosevelt's vision of the post-WW II world.
Some people thought that British killed Roosevelt. In any case, the world was saved from a Roosevelt-Stalin world nightmare.
Yeah .... The Nazi's looted gold that was looted from someone else who looted it from someone else only to have all that looted gold looted by Americans.
Gold in the hands of a bank is looted gold. Gold can only be owned by an individual.
Thousands of years of war with rape, pillage and burn as the official plan. As it always was, so shall it ever be......
Was Kelly involved? How did they get him to give up his share?
Actually wondering if the movie was loosely inspired by this event, of if life actually is stranger than fiction...
Likely, this has been known for a long time and that's one of my favorite Eastwood movies.....
Me Too!
I am just SHOCKED !
I am shocked by the quality of that color photo of the Nazi gold. Ididn't know that they had digital cameras in 1945. I thought they only had awful Ektacrhome and the like.
If you look closely, notice the hay is arranged in the Star of David form. That’s Jewish gold in them thar wooden boxes!
Yay, another Nazi gold story.
I don't buy how they leap into Story shows strategic importance of gold in times of crisis
The story shows that in the past, gold and a basket of foreign currencies was perceived to have value during times of turmoil, but there is no guarantee that yesterdays performance is a forecast of future performance. I'm a gold fan myself, but I don't fool myself into thinking I can force someone to trade me goods or services for gold in the future if we have a complete meltdown.
900 kilos...?? Pfffttt...
I find the "Golden Lily" treasure to more interesting:
