You're Fired – Now Train Your Much Cheaper Foreign Replacement

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

If you were laid off from your job, would you be willing to train your replacement if your company threatened to take away your severance pay if you didn’t do it?  And how would you feel if your replacement came from India, and the only reason your company was replacing you was because the foreign worker was a lot less expensive?

Sadly, this is happening all over America – especially in the information technology field.  Huge corporations such as Disney and Southern California Edison are coldly firing existing tech workers and filling those jobs with much cheaper foreign replacements.  They are doing this by blatantly abusing the H-1B temporary worker visa program.  Workers that had been doing a solid job for decades are being replaced without any hesitation just because it will save those firms a little bit of money.

There is very, very little loyalty left in corporate America today.  Even if you have poured your heart and your soul into your company for years, that ultimately means very little.  The moment that your usefulness is over, most firms will replace you in a heartbeat these days.

When I learned that Disney was doing this, I was absolutely outraged.  Talk about a company that is going down the toilet.  The following comes from the New York Times

While families rode the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and searched for Nemo on clamobiles in the theme parks, these workers monitored computers in industrial buildings nearby, making sure millions of Walt Disney World ticket sales, store purchases and hotel reservations went through without a hitch. Some were performing so well that they thought they had been called in for bonuses.

Instead, about 250 Disney employees were told in late October that they would be laid off. Many of their jobs were transferred to immigrants on temporary visas for highly skilled technical workers, who were brought in by an outsourcing firm based in India. Over the next three months, some Disney employees were required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.

I just couldn’t believe they could fly people in to sit at our desks and take over our jobs exactly,” said one former worker, an American in his 40s who remains unemployed since his last day at Disney on Jan. 30. “It was so humiliating to train somebody else to take over your job. I still can’t grasp it.

Honestly, I don’t think that I could do it.

I don’t think that I could train my much cheaper foreign replacement.

But if you are the average American that is just barely scraping by from paycheck to paycheck, I guess complete and total humiliation is better than losing your home to foreclosure.

Out on the west coast, Southern California Edison did the exact same thing that Disney did.  The following is an excerpt from a Fox News report

Anonymous workers who were displaced by the visa holders also submitted written testimonials to lawmakers detailing their firings. Several claimed they were forced to train their replacements, and threatened with losing their severance if they did not.

We had no choice in this,” one anonymous worker who claimed to have been one of those let go from Southern California Edison, said in a letter. The worker described how when the two vendors were picked – Infosys and TCS, both major Indian companies – SCE employees were told to “sit with, video chat or do whatever was needed to teach them our systems.”

If they did not cooperate, according to the testimonial, “we would be fired and not receive a severance package.”

That is wrong on so many levels.  But this is what corporate America has become today – a cold, heartless place that has absolutely no empathy for the average worker.

These workers at Southern California Edison were even told that the firm “could replace one of us with three, four, or five Indian personnel” and still save money on the deal

They told us they could replace one of us with three, four, or five Indian personnel and still save money,” one laid-off Edison worker told me, recounting a group meeting with supervisors last year. “They said, ‘We can get four Indian guys for cheaper than the price of you.’ You could hear a pin drop in the room.”

The original intent of the H-1B temporary worker visa program was to allow U.S. companies to import foreign workers to do jobs that they were unable to fill with American workers.

But that is not what is happening.

Instead, the H-1B temporary worker visa program is being used to replace thousands upon thousands of well paid American workers.

It is a disgusting practice and it needs to stop.  There has been so much outrage over this that it has even gotten the attention of the U.S. Senate.  The following is from a letter that a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators sent to the Attorney General

A number of U.S. employers, including some large, well-known, publicly-traded corporations, have reportedly laid off thousands of American workers and replaced them with H-1B visa holders.  To add insult to injury, many of the replaced American employees report that they have been forced to train the foreign workers who are taking their jobs. This troubling practice seems to be particularly concentrated in the information technology (IT) sector, which is not surprising given that sixty five percent of H-1B petitions approved in FY 2014 were for workers in computer-related occupations.  Though such reports of H-1B-driven layoffs have been circulating for years, their frequency seems to have increased dramatically in the past year alone.

So has anything been done about this?

Of course not.

Instead, Barack Obama is working on an extremely secretive global economic treaty which will reportedly allow far more foreign workers to come into this country and which will result in millions more good paying jobs being shipped overseas.  It is called “The Trans-Pacific Partnership”, and it is basically NAFTA on steroids.

Why is it that Barack Obama has to be on the wrong side of every single issue?

The U.S. middle class is being systematically ripped to shreds, and most Americans are showing very little alarm about this.

How much damage has to be done before people will finally start waking up?

I've been fired a few times.  They asked me to "transition" my accounts to a new rep.  I pointed to the paper files and said "There are the accounts.  Everything you need to know is in there.  If you have any questions, call this number and leave a message and I'll get back to you."  The electronic files on my work laptop, I had, of course, already wiped cleaner than Hillary Clinton's email server by the time I turned it in.

They paid me my severance.  They said I had to do it, but failed to specify how well I had to do it.

It seems like Indians, and most likely, many other peoples, are culturally programmed to desire coming to the USA, and we are culturally programmed to accept them. One of the nearby hi skools I pass on my commute had a new sign up: a picture of kids from multiple races and the text "Preparing today's kids to thrive in a global society". I see...

A couple of years back I worked on a large (100 million+) SAP upgrade. One of the key 'savings' identified was the use of infosys, etc Indian programmers. Heard the same BS about 3-4 indian guys to one US programmer. Well, the project ballooned up to 250+million and added 2-3 years.....

And the reason? Cultural differences. There were language barriers. The US people on the project were used to giving basic directions for changes and implementation and then the programmers, admins etc would run with it and make it happen. This was not the case with the Indian guys. The team had to develop its on internal structure of management that didn't exist with Americans.

So, I say let these mega corps continue down this path of ignorance of letting the MBAs run the show. What they don't know is that is with any project or product there are always hidden costs that can't be seen just on paper. In my honest opinion, the ratios is more like 5-7 indian guys to one US programmer and then ,guess what? The US programmer wins out....

So, our company got charged 150+million more for the project than was originally intended. Some of this had to be expensed immediately (lowering profits) and some was capitalized. The capitalized portion is now hitting the SG&A of the business and since this was an upgrade there aren't enough efficiencies to cover the increase in SG&A. So, now the prices of products are increasing or either the margin are eroding. So, I congratulate the MBAs/Execs for hasting the downfall of megacorps with decisions like this....keep it up. It will painful for Americans but this could also eventually be a liberating force.

Exactly. See India. They're crooks and morons in general. It's still a dump despite British coddling for centuries. 30 years ago, my mom made the mistake of subletting her apartment to an Indian college girl. First thing, she brought her mom over w/o asking. Her mom started making calls back to India. My mom had to take the telephone to work with her! Then the fool turned the stove up on high, got a pan red hot and then set it on the parquet flooring. It put a big black charred circle on the wood and it's a wonder she didn't burn the apartment down. Mom had to get them out immediately before they took everything she had and made her homeless. God help a country stupid enough to let them in, or, has he already turned his back on it?

It was ... painful and stretched for months.  Nothing raciss or whatever as they were very nice, but it was like who is doing what and what's going on?  Who am I supposed to talk to? Huh? Requirements have changed and now they want what?  Very disorganized.

Thanks for posting that article Oh Regional Indian - good insight - and I fully agree with the statement:

Let’s go back to being different and relishing it.

This, to me, is what makes other countries so fascinating - their cultures are why I'd want to go visit them.  The parasitic busy-bodies like Gates et. al. who want to make everyone "homogenous" can go fuck themselves - preferrably right off a cliff.  Just seeing how Westernized Japan has become is very sad for me - and I can imagine that it's just as bad in India.

As it turns out though...unless they are MD doctors, most people here do not accept them and not because of their race but because of their attitude.  Any company hiring them is batshit crazy unless every customer is Indian too.  In my varied experience with them, I was done at about 1 minute, every time, no matter who it was because they are just plain rude...and not even that smart!!!

Call me a racist but I am a realist as far as reality goes.  I would not buy anything from an Indian with an attitude against Muricans as much as Muricans need an attitude.

US energy comsumption per person (in kilograms of oil equivalent/year)  7164.4

India                                                                                                             565.5 so American use energy equal to 4.0 Billion Indians who do not exist on date

US food (grain) comsumption per person per year is 5 times that of India, Meat consumption is about 25 times. So before you point fingers get your facts straight. Why do you think 66percent of America's population is overweight ?? Do me a favor keep your mouth shut here and at the dinner table.

If you've seen what it is like where "those" people live, you'll understand why it is 1000x better to go West.

The absolute worst (in terms of for the ones who come over) are those who are sold the dream that they can make it here no matter what.  I recall a news clipping about immigrants who for fear of seeming unsuccessful and losing respect/face they tell family and friends back home about how well they've done.  Instead they're barely scraping by and you hear about doctors and engineers coming over, but only able to land a job as a cabbie.

Great posting, but this stuff has been going on for 20 years, and increased dramatically around 2002; before Disney there was Palm, Bank of America (remember Kevin Flanigan's suicide at their Oakland site), and many, many more.

This morning in Seattle, WA, USA, on the KIRO radio station, our local faux crat, David Ross, and some female twit, fully embraced globalization and American worker replacement by broadcasting the official Corporate/Bankster nonsense story:  they have to import foreign visa scab workers because there just aren't enough programmers, engineers, scientists, janitors, bridge construction workers, doctors, attorneys, etc., etc., etc.

Problem, of course, as this blog posting points out, these workers are ALREADY ON THE JOB, and then replaced with these foreign visa scab workers again and again and again.

Some bullcrap University of Washington comp. science professor repeated the bullcrap story, just as Microsoft's legal counsel, Rob McKenna, former unpopular Washington state attorney general (he brought an unpopular lawsuite against the Obama administration against the ACA, or ObamaCare).

It's all bankster bullcrap --- and only bloody violence will change it.

Now do you understand why Chinese scab workers were attacked in the early 1900s by laid off railroad workers, who were starving as the monopolists (Money Trusts) brought over Chinese replacement workers by the boatloads and replaced them?

I understand fully, that's why the overlords win everytime! Attacking the workers, not the overlords - same as it ever was. And that's why we are in trouble.

Hi,

I know, I am about to make myself very popular on this site, still I think what I need to say has to be said so here it goes.... I have worked for Microsoft for over six years and HP for another five, I can tell you from first hand experience that Indians beat hands down most Americans in tech knowledge, pure coding and work ethics. To be honest so do Japanese, Koreans, East Europeans and Russians. I can only guess what has caused it, people have lots of distractions and money to go and pursue them, focus is on enjoying life, slowly work ethics/hardwork/real knowledge have been replaced Jargon, being cool etc. Today more worringly most of the family units are broken, of people I know personally around 80 percent are either divorced or single parents or  having a step parent. This I believe severely impacts healthy growth of the children who end up getting neglected and suffer in many ways including education, self confidence etc.Systems and practices especially in schools and colleges today are broken, only paper-overed  "tick mark"  approach covers the rot. I really, really do worry about the education, knowledge and ethics of the coming generation and their ability to compete in a global, competitive envoirnment - which our businesses and politicians have created and contnue to foster on date. I think time has come to get our heads out of our posteriors and understand what we face and how we have reached here rather than trying to insult other nations or races.

I beg to differ.  I worked for Dell for 10 years and Left HP last year after 8 years. I have worked with some bright Indians but the ones that I saw as equal to or better were those that were consultants, where you have to generally be a cut above.  The direct employed individuals that I worked with at HP were not exceptional and in fact 1 particular person I had to deal with was quite incompetent. I never culd understand how he stayed employed but it was probably becuase he was in Singapore and his direct supervisor was in Germany. From my experience the ratio of intelligent and competent Indians is no more higher than that of the American technology workforce.

Blazing, you took a beating with the down arrows, but your words do have truth to them. There is one key thing you're not aware of though: despite the sad state of the average person, the smartest computer geniuses are in the USA. I happen to know one of the most brilliant of them all. He's assembling a team at this moment that will change the world.

Gladius,

Just one quick question "the smartest computer geniuses are in the USA." how do you know that?  here's how

1. You are infact the smartest person and all knowing on top so you know the UNIVERSAL truth which no one else does. Best part is that you are humble enough to come and tell rest about it.

2. You are a delusionist who is actually worse than tall tom, who is clearly uninformed, uneducated and uncouth (in my view)  but is happy with acknowledging that on an open forum, through his posts. You are a bit more clever - just add "In my opinion" in front of your claim and I will discuss - if you act like ALMIGHTY who KNOWS than refer to some of the language used by Tom to understand what I think of you. Remember Einstein, Martin Luther King , Gandhi, could not make a dent, but this.. er.. friend of yours will change the world, I am SURE....

India has 3 times as many people as the USA.  So India OUGHT TO be able to generate 3 times as many smart young people.  And 3 times as many not-so-smart people.  I have worked with some Indians, and they were smart and hard-working, but I would not say they were smarter or more hard-working than the Americans in the same office.

I see the State legislature is going to cut money to the libraries and parks again, and increase money gifts to corporations to "lure them into the State".  I think the rich people who run the State are showing me what they value.  Themselves.  Their airplanes, castles, cars, vacations, and social standing at their country clubs.  And, of course, "law and order", since those laws and that order provide them with airplanes, castles, cars, vacations, and social standing at their country clubs.  And that money has to come from somewhere, so they will take it from the things that make children smarter, and then they will blame the children.  I don't blame the children.  I blame the citizens who don't vote.

Why is this just getting press now? This has been going on for 15 years in the U.S. Politicians have never understood it because the Indians don't work for the company laying off the people, but work for Infosys, Accenture, TaTa, IBM, Wipto, Cognizant, etc.

They just think the people are getting laid off due to downsizing, but they have always been replaced by H1B labor. Its is an old story, and has cost about 1 to 2 million U.S. Jobs over 15 years. This is a big chunk of middle class wage stagnation.

Come on, at least have some fun with it. I would diligently train my replacement to do the job in the most inefficient, error prone, wasteful, time consuming, and costly way possible. If the replacement were to have any concerns or suggestions for improvement, I'd just keep hammering the point that, "this is the way things are done here, and if you even suggest any changes, you won't be around long enough to train your replacement."

edit: I see that unplugged has expressed the same idea far more succinctly.

You obviously hae not spent anytime READING.

Competent people are perceived as threats to the incompetent in any organization.

So instead of the incompetents concentrating of building their own competency the will divert attention to the destruction of the threat. This further erodes corporate efficiencies.

Incompetents rise to a level where advancement is no longer possible.

Perhaps you ought to READ "The Peter Principle", understand the basics of CORPORATE ORGANIZATION, and then draw the inferences from that information provided.

But, alas, it seems as if you have advanced to your own level of incompetency and are now diverting your energies to stymie the advancement ,and attempting to rid yourself of your CORPORATE INFERIORS (Inferior only by position in the Corporate Structure as sme are most definitely superior to you in personal character..YOU FUCKING RACIST PIECE OF SHIT..)

So good luck with that. I will be celebrating the demise of Microsoft during the oncoming Economic Collapse...and your personal demise along with it. Corporate employees will be amongst the very last people that I will assist. You can starve as far as I am concerned.

It didn't involve training his replacement, but I have a buddy that was placed in a similar situation.  His job involved working on pumps in a natural gas field.  In order to keep them going, he and the others had to come up with bypasses on circuts and whatnot because they didn't always have the necessary replacement parts to repare things in the OEM way.  The accountants figured that they could just hire subcontractors on an as needed basis and got rid of the entire crew.  When they figured out that it doesn't work that way, the people who had been shitcanned all told the company to fuck off, and they lost the contract.

Zinn was a fucking communist who was successful indocrinating more useful idiots for the Marxist movement. His entire "history" is just a tome of communist ideology promoted as enlighted "alternative" viewpoints.

Howard Zinn was teaching a class, but he wasn't yet a professor and his classroom wasn't at a university. It was late 1951, and the students who gathered for Zinn's lessons in Brooklyn were his fellow members of the Communist Party USA.

One of Zinn's comrades described him as "a person with some authority" within the local CPUSA section and said that Zinn's class was on "basic Marxism," the theme being "that the basic teachings of Marx and Lenin were sound and should be adhered to by those present."

What a load. I almost stopped reading after this non-sensical statement--"There is very, very little loyalty left in corporate America today. "--but thought the author might actually go on to provide some support for implied contentiont that there was loyalty in the past.

Then I came across this little chestnut, "But this is what corporate America has become today – a cold, heartless place that has absolutely no empathy for the average worker."

Or maybe the author thought just because Citizens' United guaranteed corporate personhood it magically created corporate conscience.

My first day in a foreign not to be named country I found the same mess but with CAT5. They had about 90 runs of 4 pair of assorted colors from the server room to the operations center tied to cheap SOHO switches on the ops side. Mind you, this was to connect 3 CLASSIFIED networks from the server room to the Ops Center. I spent a week installing a service shelf they had in storage just to run one fiber pair per network, separated as per standards and spent a day cutting the mess of cables just to pull them down from the former "service shelf".

Each of those lines acts as an antenna, in a country rather famous for monsoonal storms . . .

Reliable power (let alone "clean" power) is still an issue in the major cities. Out "in the sticks" power cuts are commonplace (daily), since infrastructure costs money, and the moneymakers prefer to minimise their costs.

It is very useful to remember that India is one of the very few countries where the really big "supergrid" transformers are still built from scratch. So, if the is an EMP event (man-made or natural) you'll be hoping that India might be able to provide you with those big network transformers / reactors / HV control gear. Current lead times for new build are about ten (10) years, so you could be in for a wait.

Thirty five years ago (early 1980's) our neighbour in the UK was a senior engineer for the CEGB (Marchwood Laboratory). Even then, he was forever complaining that they had problems getting HV bushings on contract from their always overseas, usually Indian suppliers - there was either no, or very little UK manufacturing capacity, and that was before Thatcher gutted whatever was left in favour of the FIRE future fiasco.

Now? I'd be VERY interested to hear comments from HV Distribution engineers, as to where they source their parts for "routine" servicing / reconditioning from. I suspect it'll not be very local, and I'd be interested to hear how far ahead you need to place orders, especially for the less common components (i.e. higher working voltage).

It occurred to me the other day while doing the only "constitutional" function that still seems to work anymore that this open borders and particularly H1-B visa nonsense in the hard sciences and medical is in the short term about money of course, but ominously, in the long term I think it is about controlling access to cutting technology and innovation. Illegals and work visa types have a rather nasty added level of control to ensure compliance.

The dumbing down is full spectrum. Lip-service to "education" with bullshit degrees, yet hard science people can't get work with theirs, unless they want to work for third world wages. In the longer term, I see only vetted large club/tribe members/spawn having access to the cutting edge stuff, with H1-B's doing the grunt work.

It's about control of every. single. molecule. of. your. existence.

Alas, this is war after all.

Americans have been successfully drugged out on scientifically controlled TV.  It has turned them into non-productive zombies incapable of critical thinking.  They have become far too dependent on other people and the collective for the basics of their life, which is the foundation of survival.  They think they bought into an easy way forward, but life was not designed by nature to be easy.  Americans will pay a price for allowing this to happen.  They don't see it coming, but they will have it in their laps nonetheless, likely sooner than later.

That's true; but just like the Nazis, others will learn from our mistakes and quietly solve their own problems, and label themselves heroes for it, while we get all the ridicule and blame.

Zion's plunder of the American country and American people has gone full retard.

Have you cleaned your weapons lately?

I was listening to a radio talk show the other late night and the host claimed that not only did the Disney wokers have to train their replacements, but that the workers were "black listed" from employment at any Disney contractor.

Disney admitted that they had been black-listed, but it was "inadvertent." However, the reason it was inadvertent was because Disney already had in place a policy of automatic black-listing of any and all ex employees--do as we say or be cut off from your livelihood forever (Wonderful World of Serfdom?)

Disney cut off responses to the reporter when they pressed on as to why a black-list policy existed in the first place. Later they came back and said that it was not a black-list per se, just a policy of not letting previous employees work in same or similar jobs with Disney or contractors working for Disney for 18 months--in corporate speak: a black-list.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

With everything that's going on in this country, I have to believe that there is a master plan to eventually replace it's citizens, period.  What's really frightening, is that every politician knows what's happening and very few even speak out, never mind try to do something about it.  Instead, they seem to be fostering it.  The Baby Boomer generation will be the last American generation.

I could write on about how the Zionists and their Amongst have set about plundering the American country and people since 1896, but I will leave that up to one of Zion's upper level subordinates:

“Once we squeeze all we can out of the United States, it can dry up and blow away.” -- Benjamin Netanyahu, 2002

If one always keeps in mind that it is about money, power, and division--plunder--then they will fair well on understanding what is happening. If they try to digest it based on understanding beliefs and motives of misdirected good will, they will become utterly confused and lost.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

Always about money, power, and division--plunder.
Don't let them take it. Don't let them have it. Don't believe it.

luckily, my group has dodged the bullet every time, because there's so much proprietary info at such ridiculous depths that it remains simply impossible to just bring in the H1Bs and have any semblance of functional troubleshooting left.  they tried it with lower levels, to ....well let's just say less than stellar results.

Agreed. I was working at HP late 90's when they were forcing us to train chinks to take not just our jobs, but crucial proprietary knowledge that they could not have developed on their own for years. Was a forced surrender. We monkey-wrenched some stuff just to fuck with them, but of course hopeless when the leaders are selling you out. Like to see them shot or better yet burned at the stake.

a real story. a cook who is a native born and works part time at a local supermarket has been cooking/grocery shopping/cleaning the house for an Indian IT worker family who live in a multi-million house in a gated PGA golf community. The Indian guy who came to the US in 2009 pays him $8.75 an hour for about 20 hours a week but the cook only gets paid 15 hours a week. He is a really nice guy and wants to ask a dollor increase in his hourly pay recently because he has put in three years by now but just doesn’t know how to do it.

Read an interview in Forbes around 2010 I believe it was.   An Indian family that had HB-1'd their way over here.   Tech industry (what else), had purchased a house in 2006, etc.     Then some layoffs happened and along with it their house value took a buzz-cut.    The lady said she and the family were moving back to India as there were opportunities popping up all over the place in that market.   She said there was no reason for them to stay here any longer as things weren't turning out the way they had thought.

Stood in line at the store, ended up chatting with a chinese girl whose family had immigrated here. She said her family can't understand why the US govt doesn't just sell Every Single opportunity to be a US citizen; of course, they already do, it's called vote buying and they give you special loans (which is why all corner stores are owned by foreigners now and all the tax drivers in NY ....and most big cities...are muslim) and lots of stuff. Seattle Times had an article on a deaf foreign older couple who will be getting their free benefits for the rest of their lives because they've been designated as not able to work/disabled.

Meanwhile, out in California, Jerry Brown said in the LA Times a couple of days ago that California can absorb ten million more foreigners! Holy You Know What, do we have to have tomatoes at ten dollars a piece before we say NOT ONE MORE IMMIGRANT. The last drought in California was around 1976 when they turned water off everywhere. Now they have double the population at 40 MILLION Not Counting ILLEGALS. 1/3 of Mexico now resides in the US. Then the LA Times yesterday said they will be cutting off water to those with pre-1914 water rights. Good luck with that eating thing.

Where will your children live? Your grandchildren? All in the name of "diversity" cause white people must be punished.

A Bank of America employee was forced to do the same several years ago,,, on his last day he committed suicide.

I immediately cancelled a bank account I had with them and urged others to do the same.... but like everything else, it was too much a hassle for them. Most said the individual was an idiot.

Amerikans are a heartless bunch,,, that is until it happens to them. Then it's a tragedy. Please help, they say. But their compatriots do to them what they done to others.

We can come up with every stupid excuse in the world why something is happening but we don't have the desire to inconvenience ourselves a little to stop it.

We could have stopped this years ago but now all we can do is come up with lame excuses to deny responsibility and whine.

I work in technology for a rather old company. Getting ready to hit 20 years with them but we have the "Disney" model tee'd up for the CIO to take a swing  - with the board of directors as approving spectators. The similarites are between Disney's IT and us are striking.

I may survive this cut ..but then again....I am the only American-born citizen in my department. Such is America today.

I would probably just do a shitty job of training them. I wouldn't want to get sued for damaging company stuff.

I'm pretty sure the guy before me sabotaged everything. Documents would NEVER have dates in the file names; I think he removed all of them just to make things difficult. Versions were also a mess. There would be things like version 1, "final", "final revision 2", "100%". Of course, none of the files have dates on them, so you can't tell which order they are. Another brilliant thing he did was have files located on 3 different servers, and it wasn't immediately clear which copy was the working copy. Suppose we have a project consisting of a house, a car, and a yard. The working (most recent) copy of the house might be on server #2, the car is #1, and the yard is on #3. The catch is that all 3 servers have plan sets for all 3 locations. That means you have a total of 9 drawing sets, of which 3 are up to date. The other 6 are obsolete. If you didn't carefully inspect every single drawing, you might put an engineering stamp on a drawing that is obsolete, and that opens the door to huge legal problems if the thing fucks up and someone gets hurt. Another hilarious and awesome thing he did was related to file sorting. What he would do is create 1 giant folder containing a bunch of different files, create shortcuts to each file, and then sort the shortcuts into folders. That means all of the sorting was shortcuts. If you ever wanted to fuck everything up, all you had to do was delete the folder structure containing the shortcuts. All of the files are still in the same place, but all of the sorting is gone. Oh, and did I mention these files didn't have fucking dates in the file names? It took months to fix that fucking thing.

The big companies were doing this as far back as early 90s. Sun, Intel, Microsoft personal experience. At Sun they did tricks to make sure no US born would apply for the job, but if they did just tossed the resumes anyway. Once they got someone they were a slave to get a green card, etc...

Now it is just fully formed for all companies. My last company doing HDTV the CEO said he could hire five Chinese for price of one US. Then he did and the company disappeared except the corporate guys managing the Chinese. Lot of smart chip designers and hardware/software designers. All turned to dust in the wind.
