You're Fired – Now Train Your Much Cheaper Foreign Replacement

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

If you were laid off from your job, would you be willing to train your replacement if your company threatened to take away your severance pay if you didn’t do it?  And how would you feel if your replacement came from India, and the only reason your company was replacing you was because the foreign worker was a lot less expensive?

Sadly, this is happening all over America – especially in the information technology field.  Huge corporations such as Disney and Southern California Edison are coldly firing existing tech workers and filling those jobs with much cheaper foreign replacements.  They are doing this by blatantly abusing the H-1B temporary worker visa program.  Workers that had been doing a solid job for decades are being replaced without any hesitation just because it will save those firms a little bit of money.

There is very, very little loyalty left in corporate America today.  Even if you have poured your heart and your soul into your company for years, that ultimately means very little.  The moment that your usefulness is over, most firms will replace you in a heartbeat these days.

When I learned that Disney was doing this, I was absolutely outraged.  Talk about a company that is going down the toilet.  The following comes from the New York Times

While families rode the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and searched for Nemo on clamobiles in the theme parks, these workers monitored computers in industrial buildings nearby, making sure millions of Walt Disney World ticket sales, store purchases and hotel reservations went through without a hitch. Some were performing so well that they thought they had been called in for bonuses.

Instead, about 250 Disney employees were told in late October that they would be laid off. Many of their jobs were transferred to immigrants on temporary visas for highly skilled technical workers, who were brought in by an outsourcing firm based in India. Over the next three months, some Disney employees were required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.

I just couldn’t believe they could fly people in to sit at our desks and take over our jobs exactly,” said one former worker, an American in his 40s who remains unemployed since his last day at Disney on Jan. 30. “It was so humiliating to train somebody else to take over your job. I still can’t grasp it.

Honestly, I don’t think that I could do it.

I don’t think that I could train my much cheaper foreign replacement.

But if you are the average American that is just barely scraping by from paycheck to paycheck, I guess complete and total humiliation is better than losing your home to foreclosure.

Out on the west coast, Southern California Edison did the exact same thing that Disney did.  The following is an excerpt from a Fox News report

Anonymous workers who were displaced by the visa holders also submitted written testimonials to lawmakers detailing their firings. Several claimed they were forced to train their replacements, and threatened with losing their severance if they did not.

We had no choice in this,” one anonymous worker who claimed to have been one of those let go from Southern California Edison, said in a letter. The worker described how when the two vendors were picked – Infosys and TCS, both major Indian companies – SCE employees were told to “sit with, video chat or do whatever was needed to teach them our systems.”

If they did not cooperate, according to the testimonial, “we would be fired and not receive a severance package.”

That is wrong on so many levels.  But this is what corporate America has become today – a cold, heartless place that has absolutely no empathy for the average worker.

These workers at Southern California Edison were even told that the firm “could replace one of us with three, four, or five Indian personnel” and still save money on the deal

They told us they could replace one of us with three, four, or five Indian personnel and still save money,” one laid-off Edison worker told me, recounting a group meeting with supervisors last year. “They said, ‘We can get four Indian guys for cheaper than the price of you.’ You could hear a pin drop in the room.”

The original intent of the H-1B temporary worker visa program was to allow U.S. companies to import foreign workers to do jobs that they were unable to fill with American workers.

But that is not what is happening.

Instead, the H-1B temporary worker visa program is being used to replace thousands upon thousands of well paid American workers.

It is a disgusting practice and it needs to stop.  There has been so much outrage over this that it has even gotten the attention of the U.S. Senate.  The following is from a letter that a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators sent to the Attorney General

A number of U.S. employers, including some large, well-known, publicly-traded corporations, have reportedly laid off thousands of American workers and replaced them with H-1B visa holders.  To add insult to injury, many of the replaced American employees report that they have been forced to train the foreign workers who are taking their jobs. This troubling practice seems to be particularly concentrated in the information technology (IT) sector, which is not surprising given that sixty five percent of H-1B petitions approved in FY 2014 were for workers in computer-related occupations.  Though such reports of H-1B-driven layoffs have been circulating for years, their frequency seems to have increased dramatically in the past year alone.

So has anything been done about this?

Of course not.

Instead, Barack Obama is working on an extremely secretive global economic treaty which will reportedly allow far more foreign workers to come into this country and which will result in millions more good paying jobs being shipped overseas.  It is called “The Trans-Pacific Partnership”, and it is basically NAFTA on steroids.

Why is it that Barack Obama has to be on the wrong side of every single issue?

The U.S. middle class is being systematically ripped to shreds, and most Americans are showing very little alarm about this.

How much damage has to be done before people will finally start waking up?

Yeah, I don't blame the Chinese but it is sad.  I started in manufacturing in Ireland, an ICT engineer was like a hero.  Then all the manufacturing started pulling when the wages went up and the tax breaks finished.

People put a lot into these jobs and the companies disappear, a lot of hardship amongst the boom in the early noughties.

Agree.  It started here in '92 with the election of Clinton adn the passage of NAFTA.

My first factory job out of college, as an Industrial Engineer, went away after 9 months. They told me they were moving the factory to Mexico because there they didn't hvae to pay minimum wage, worry about OSHA, EPA, and bonus: the disgruntled workers could not sue for 'injuries' acquired on the job.  No workmans' comp in ole Mexico.

500 people who worked at that now vacant plant for many years were also let go. Fast forward 20 years and I'm working as an IT manager for a clothing company that formerly moved its mfg to China in 2000 (laying off 600 workers).

My last year there was spent automating all IT related systems (cloud based PBX, virtualization, Cloud based data, IP telephony) and training a local semi-literate $8/hour son of the the HR lady to remove viruses, install Windows, configure POS systems, change printer cartrides etc.

Not 2 months after the old data center was decomissioned and the IP telephony in place (old PBX that I ran also decommissioned) I was let go with 1 month severance.

I worked there for 3 years. When I was hired there were 10 in the IT department. 2 years before that there were 20. Now there are 3 including the CIO and the semi-literate kid. I survived 3 rounds of layoffs then got the hook once my important projects were done.

I saw the writing on the wall months before and queried my supervisor about it so I'd have time to look for another job if that was happening.  He patently denied it more than once.  I knew he was a liar.

In fact, the only people who could succeed at the company once the son of the founder took over were lying sociopaths including the CIO.  Hence the reason the company's sales have declined from $80M per year in 2007 to $18M in FY 2013.

80% females and 20% manginas. Doomed to fail.

This county is full of abandoned mfg facilities that once employed thousands of local residents. Now most of them have moved away, gone on disability, turned to drugs and crime, or they work at Walmart or Lowes. Main St is full  of available space/vacant store fronts. Also there are many large industrial buildings available for rent very cheap. Outside minimum wage service jobs, are no jobs other than .gov, HC, and edu -- government backed monopolies.

Free trade is full of win. For somebody but not your average person who has to work for a living.

And at the same time they're gutting white collar jobs, they allow unlimited immigration of 3rd worlders to gut the wages of every blue collar trade. I have friends that were making $15 per hour in 1985 in different trades (carpentry, masonary, sheetrock, auto body).  30 years later they're still earning $15/hour but their standard of living has crashed. Back then these guys had nice clothes, new cars, and hot chicks. Now they drive beaters, live in trailers, and stay home a lot. Because they're broke even though they make more than the US median wage of $13.26 per hour.

Hmm.  Could the federal reserve have anything to do with the destruction of our purchasing power?  Eh could be.

Could we all say a small ll he told us so for Ross Perot. This country has almost 400 MILLION People and the ones who built this country are too stupid to keep it; they stand around twiddling their thumbs while it's sold off to the chinese and the mexicans and the muslims and anyone who isn't white or Christian. But be aware, the foreigners aren't happy. You think they don't know they are being paid slave wages...I met a guy who had a green card to work as an accountant. Just nasty, angry and unhappy about what he was being paid and he funneled all that anger towads every US citizens in lots of ways.

>At Sun they did tricks to make sure no US born would apply for the job, but if they did just tossed the resumes anyway.

NO, it didn't work exactly that way...

If you were white you had to be interviewed by a white manager to get hired at SUN. The Asians and the Indians who were given management positions always hired their own.

WHICH IS WHY YOU NEVER PUT AN INDIAN INTO A MANAGEMENT POSITION AT YOUR COMPANY.

I would like to get in touch with you to discuss the names and contact information of some of these smart chip designers and engineers, particularly any who live in the southeast, and/or are willing to relocate to north Alabama. There is a large project (private, non government) just getting started that requires the brightest minds. If you see this post would you mind contacting me offline? Email server is gmail (.com), username nathan.klein.17 . Thank you in advance.

Y'know, the penalties for being convicted of damaging a computer system are ridiculously huge, like being a terrorist and a bankster molester all in one.  On the other hand, it's probably next to impossible to actually convict anybody of that sort of thing in a court of law.  I'm surprised there aren't more cases like that.

It is about to become even WORSE, I think it is very likely that the TPP will pass Tuesday. Let us all hope it will not...

EPI Identifies Poisonous Immigration Acceleration Ingredients In Trade Agreement

Since the GOP leadership proposing to try again next week this essay is imperative reading for Immigration Patriots.

The authors point out that the poisoned chalice is not the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) (about which assurances that immigration is not effected have been given) but something called the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) about which there has been silence.

…there is little doubt that it will constrain the future ability of the United States Congress to regulate U.S. immigration policy. In fact, deregulating the U.S. work visa system, and therefore opening it up to foreign corporations that provide services (as opposed to goods) is the explicit purpose of an entire annex (section) in TiSA, entitled “Movement of Natural Persons.” The text was heretofore secret until Wikileaks published it on its website last week.

The proposals include elements which would

…prohibit member states from “maintain[ing] or adopt[ing] Economic Needs Tests, including labor market tests, as a requirement for a visa or work permit” in the sectors where commitments are made. (In other words, U.S. laws or regulations limiting guestworkers only to jobs where no U.S. workers were available would violate the terms of the treaty.)

They conclude

TiSA has been written in secret by and for major corporations that will benefit greatly if it becomes law. If the House of Representatives grants the Obama administration the fast-track trade promotion authority it seeks, the authority will be valid for six years, which means TiSA (like TPP) would also get an up-or-down vote in Congress without any amendments—making it very likely to pass and become law without the necessary democratic deliberations on immigration that such major changes should have. The leaked TiSA text makes it clear that contrary to the claims by proponents of fast-track trade promotion authority, the reality is that those voting for fast track are ceding key powers to make immigration law and policy to an unelected group of corporations and foreign governments.

They are absolutely right. This Fast Track legislation is designed to smuggle in the Immigration Acceleration aspect of the Gang of 8 Bill. That is why President Obama wants it.

Every summer heat wave brings it a little closer to wild fire. These cycles always correct violently. It is a race. The real powers, directing the frontmen of the state to build up the walls and firebreaks between the people and them, before the fires run wild. But ultimately, the power cannot pay enough, long enough, to keep them safe from those they have driven to desperation. Even their police catch conscience and desperation. Family ties. Eventually, there is not enough to take from the masses, to offer token payment back to keep them molified. It resets. Two or many more steps back. Then a slow trudge back to where we were. Forgetting lessons along the way. Repeat till there is no way back. One less semi intelligent lifeform braodcasting into the universe. Does SETI really have to filter out signals from Earth?

Not just the USA.

Only yesterday I got talking to a young chap in Cheshire England - in a charity shop.

The company he had worked for making sheds and similar had fired him and every employee and replaced them all with lower paid Poles.

However I asked him if he had voted in the election but he hadn't bothered - all the same he says.

Well I gave him a kindly talk on how he had to start voting for the only opposition Party in Britain - UKIP - but what can you do - with such apathy.

People are so conditioned and seem to have lost any fire or spunk.

This is the class that created the 'Labour' party - albeit Labour in Britain is about as Corporatist as you can get since the war Criminal Blair hijacked it.

Its almost collective surrender and 'social suicide'.

Frankly its odd.

What IS in the water - no longer seems a completely stupid question.

There isn't a single academic, peer-reviewed published study that schills can even point to that there is an explicit need for H-1B visas or that there is really a huge and credible 'skills gap' in the American workforce in almost every area.  Instead the rhetoric is driven by 'think tanks' (often right-win ones but even some middle of the road ones/left-leaning like Brookings) and corporate-organizations that point to this perceived huge gap.  Strategy consulting firms who also don't want to bite the hands that feed them also regurgitate this garbage.   After a while the lay public begins to believe it.  All an attempt to ensure they can broaden various visa programs as much as possible and make off-sourcing more palpable when some dickhead like Bill Gates comes on to say we can't just find any US native programmers & computer engineers.

Future is going to be dystopian for most because localized labor in the industrialized world can't effectively organize and challenge on a widespread basis like it did in the late 19th century/early 20th century.  Global supply chains and logistics along with communications enable it and there is no longer really any country you can't do business with (communist) anymore either.  You'll have 5% to at most 20% of a population living fairly well but for the rest it will see health and ecnomic indicator decline.  If the wealthy get too stupid and greedy (and they are getting there) and want too much of the pig, then things can go astray.

Even when there is large enough pushback (on the temporary TPP vote this week), politicians will find a way to drive a wedge between people whether it is race, social issues, etc.

If I had a majic wand and could do it all over again, I'd have loaded my truck with alignment tools, refrigerant scales, drain rooter etc. as soon as the computer quit working to hold as hostage till either the computer started working again or I got laid off with a proper severance package. Another thing I'd have done would have been to download files to a flash drive from a co-workers computer to use in my next job.

“Why is it that Barack Obama has to be on the wrong side of every single issue?”

First, we have to realize that Obama is merely a puppet, like all other politicians and bureaucrats.  We have to identify those who pull his and their strings – and then, we can answer the question, “Why…”

Puppeteers are Judeo-Bolsheviks and the English nobility; and they are engaged in an operation that began shortly before the so-called Treaty of Peace of 1783.  It is a centuries-long aim to annihilate American ideals.  An early mention of it surfaced in the London Times over a century ago,

“If this mischievous financial policy, which has its origin in North America, shall become endurated down to a fixture, then that Government will furnish its own money without cost. It will pay off debts and be without debt. It will have all the money necessary to carry on its commerce. It will become prosperous without precedent in the history of the world. The brains, and wealth of all countries will go to North America. That country must be destroyed or it will destroy every monarchy on the globe.” -- The London Times responding to Lincoln's Greenback notes

Actually, this operation has its origin in debates in the English parliament when the Treaty of Peace of 1783 was forming.

What we are witnessing now is probably the final stage of this English (and their Judeo-Bolshevik money lenders) attempt to “return America to obedience”.

The evidence is all around us, even in publications issued by the Federal Reserve and US Government.

I recently examined a Financial Report of the US Government. I found, for example, that government accountants made 75-year projections as if the government would not pay interest on its debt instruments during that time.

And then there were street gangs and drug cartels, the government’s – and China’s – role in arming, protecting and forming alliances with such gangs and cartels… and a dozen or so other items.  They all point to a conclusion that a vast operation is being perpetrated…  I began this Part 2 (of my examination) with the question, ‘What financial shock do Judeo-Bolsheviks plan?  (Part one and Part two)  Do they plan to inflate the dollar to zero… push stocks to a PE ratio 300, then slam them to a ratio of single digits or even minus numbers… repudiate the federal debt… replace Federal Reserve bank notes with Treasury bank notes…?’  And, how do China’s ghost cities fit into this unprecedented operation?

“How much damage has to be done before people… start waking up?”

A very, very small fraction of Americans will never wake up; they will die or kill rather than face truth.  Americans are a conquered nation; not by ordinary warfare, but by a lethargy induced by medication, an ignorance molded by indoctrination, to name only a few degradations.

“kill them… arrest them… all of them”

So say quite a few who comment on this site.

Of course, it’s probably the worst thing to do – if their cause is the rights of man, that is.

On the other hand, if their cause is the imposition of tyranny, “kill them” is probably the best action possible; for, it gives Judeo-Bolsheviks (JB’s) an acceptable excuse to impose martial law… and smear the cause of man.  What else should we expect from JB’s?  They have been destroying civilizations for at least 5,000 years.  For them, false flags are routine operations; using slow-witted dupes is another specialty they have developed to a high art form.

In other words, he who proposes executing government-protected assassins and thieves is doing the work of Judeo-Bolsheviks.

It doesn’t matter whether he is an unwitting dupe or a conscious counter-intelligence operative – the result is always the same: an excuse for more tyranny; some call it “martial law”.

It happens repeatedly: JB’s 1) lead slow-witted and angry peasants onto streets, block traffic (that is, violate rights of non-protesters); 2) incite peasants to more violence; 3) when police begin shooting, JB’s disappear; 4) peasants take bullets (Did I say, ‘slow-witted’?); and 5) martial law, or soldiers, follow.

No, if our cause is liberty, we don’t want to execute them.

There are at least five reasons.

One: we don’t want to become like them: execution without due process.

Two: it would put them out of their misery too quickly; it is more pleasing to prolong it as long as possible.

Three: instead of “slitting their throats”, we should recover the booty they took and return it to those from whom it was wrongly taken: for example, taxes wrongly imposed or collected (one); the neglect and abuse of children compelled by such taxes (two); among many others.  There are tens of trillions floating around the world (three) in various forms – bank accounts, stocks, bonds, real property – available for recovery.

Four: it would be a pleasure to watch JB’s and their useful idiots scatter as cornered rats as we make them accountable for what they did.

Five: it would lay the foundation for an unprecedented experiment in liberty; for, none other attempted to make tyrants accountable – only to escape them.

We will be the first in this regard; for, we have resources available to us that no one else in prior ages had: a) a heavily armed population (altho greatly hobbled by medication, see this for cure,) b) instant communication, and c)lessons of prior ages to guide us.

Unfortunately, while most Americans are aware of resources a) and b), hardly any are aware of the last… or how to cure a medicated lethargy.

And without this last resource, all will be for naught, actually worse… much worse; for, how can you play the game if you don’t know the rules (law and procedures of redress)?

It all comes to one question: “Will we strive for redress… or leave the task for our children?”

I am engineer that has been laid off 6 times when an H1-b visa recipient replaced me .  I was forced to train them but I trained them wrong ; probably only set them back a few weeks but it was my last revenge .

I been calling/writing  politicians for the last 15 years & the politicians pretend not to understand and reply that they will build a bigger fence at the borger.

I think engineers are an easy target & others don't seem to care .  I am glad to see this issue is starting to get some press

MONEY.....

can buy power, but it can't buy respect

it can't buy you love, but it can buy you sex

it can't buy you sleep, but it can buy a bed

it can buy a bath, but it can't buy purity

it'll buy bodyguards, but it won't buy security

Some feel important cause they're born with

some have the nerve to say they're fortunate (forging) it

truth is you don't need a fortune to be fortunate

...Some even say it doesn't grow on trees

I've heard that said many of times, but  they are wrong, for if it doesn't, then tell    me, where did you get  the paper from?

Does happiness live in a mansion with a swimming pool?

I know people with plenty of money that are miserable

I need papers to live, but never will I live for papers

abolish this scheme, I don't wanna see those clowns' painted faces

Some people 'round the word do anything to get the P's

the society we live in it's a necessity

It's got the power to turn your best friends to enemies

it's funny 'cause money doesn't follow us when we leave...

I think that guy that shot up the police station in Dallas this morning may have reached his tipping point.
