Israeli Flight Bound For NYC U-Turns Mid-Atlantic
El Al Israel Airlines Flight #7 bound for New York City (from Tel Aviv) has, as AirLive.net reports, U-turn'd abruptly as it entered The Atlantic and appears to be heading back to Israel. Some details are being reported that there is a problem with one engine... which is odd because they are so far from Tel Aviv, why not land "safely" somewhere and seek repairs?

These can still fly safely on one engine. 747 has 4 engines , one down is not that uncommon and certainly not a serious risk.
what if they are flying airbus 320 sharklets ?
A320 has 2 engines so they would have to make an emergency landing at the nearest suitable airfield. Anyways A320 is not suitable for trans-altantic they cannot carry enough fuel.

if just one engine--then they go back to Israel and have a substitte plane and crew , can fix exhine more easily there AAND they cannot fly over ocean with only 3 of 4 engines.

They have protocols to follow.. they returned over land , not water and were never more than xx minutes away from a usable airstrip... I just scanned the FAA regs for a 747-400 http://fsims.faa.gov/wdocs/mmel/b-747-400_r29.htm and found that the requirements for flight differ wildly based on the engines fitted ,, Pratt and GE seem to be more reliable than Rolls... just like all the "British Electrics" jokes we've all heard for the last 50 years the RR engines can fly with various fault codes and failures in the electronic engine management systems ,, seemingly because they seem to put out a lot of false faults...

Good decision of the crew to return, instead of dumping fuel and landing somewhere without adequate maintanance facilities, hotels for the passengers, and requiring a replacement aircraft to be ferried in.
Unfortunately all the "financial experts" here are still pissed off with gold at $1200, so they need a highly emotional story ("mid-Atlantic") and anti-semitism story to vent their frustration.

An engine problem would normaly have you land at nearest safe airfield. A Maintence ferry pilot would then fly the aircraft back to base without passengers. Maintence base is probably not Tel Aviv.
They could have continued to NY instead of turning around at the half way point. Better maintenance in NY. Or even get her to Gander.

I'm not sure 3 engines on a 747 constitutes an emergency. I read about a BA flight that had just taken off from LAX for London when they lost an engine. The flight continued on to London on 3 engines.

Exactly, as long as it's not "severe engine damage" (i.e. fire, smoke, vibrations, no remaining N1, N2 indications, loud bang etc) it's no problem to continue back to Tel Aviv on the 3 remaining engines. Should another engine flame out then this would consitute an emergency, and over the remaining route back to TLV there would be plenty of alternate airports available to land a 747. Continuing over the Atlantic however would not be a safe option.
A simple flame out (perhaps due to a problem with the EEC, Electronic Engine Control), although extremely rare, do happen and the failed engine will just windmill leading to an increased fuel burn. Another reason for the increased fuel burn will be the fact that the optimum altitude can not be reached on those 3 remaining engines with a full load of passengers and cargo.
People here, just like elsewhere, seem to be brainwashed by the mainstream media by reading all those "jet makes emergency landing" headlines and the blatant and emotional anti-semitism here is outright scary. Maintanance, dumping fuel, putting the passengers in hotels, delays, missed connections, flying in a replacement aircraft is very expensive, so from the sound of it it probably was a sensible commercial and safe decision of the crew to burn the excess fuel (instead of dumping) by returning to TLV.

If they had an issue prior to the Equal Time Point (Mechanical, medical, etc.) they will divert to their enroute alternate, perhaps Shannon or Dublin. It happens all of the time.

Well, it's three hours back to Tel Aviv. Maybe there's another aircraft there they can load the passengers into. Or they could land in Paris, fly the plane back to Tel Aviv empty, and fly the empty plane from Tel Aviv to Paris to pick up the passengers and continue to New York.
But that would involve another landing and take-off with a damaged plane. I'm no expert, and I'm sure I wouldn't be a happy passenger either, but I guess this doesn't sound that unlogical. Well, they probably could get it fixed in Paris, or fix it themselves in Paris, but would rather do it back home. Marginal.

IF you look at that flight radar site, for some reason the israeli arcraft seem to be always flying about 100 Kts faster than the equivalents of other nations...
If you just click on a plane that interests you adn it tells you a b lot about it including how fast it is flying adn at what altitude.
