, after a white gunman opened fire inside one of Charleston’s oldest and most well known black churches tonight.
Mayor Joe Riley exclaimed, "this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together.”
As The Post and Courier reports, a bomb threat complicated the investigation and prompted police to ask nearby residents to evacuate. The shooter is still at large...
Police and emergency vehicles swarmed several blocks surrounding Henrietta and Calhoun streets, just east of Marion Square. Barricades blocked off several streets to traffic, and police asked nearby residents to leave their homes.
The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. inside Emanuel AME Church at 110 Calhoun St. Police were seen exiting the 19th century church, and their presence extended blocks beyond the site.
Police were still looking for the gunman late Wednesday, and helicopters are hovering above. Police spokesman Charles Francis described the suspect as a 21-year-old white male in a gray sweatshirt/hoodie and jeans with Timberland boots. He has a slender build.

Around 10:45 p.m., police officers at the scene drew their weapons and later escorted a man in handcuffs, who appeared to match that description.
But officials said later that they were still searching for the gunman.

In a latest update, AP reports,
Charleston police say nine people have been killed in a shooting at a historic black church in what authorities intend to investigate as a hate crime.
Police Chief Greg Mullen says eight people were found dead Wednesday at Emanuel AME Church and another person died later at the hospital.
Mullen says a prayer meeting was going on at the church at the time of the shooting.
The shooter, described as a white male, was not yet in custody.

If there was a specific reason to eliminate one of the individuals shot, attention would be quickly focused on motives for killing that individual, especially if it was done in a specific and professional manner. A mass killling may obscure who the actual target was, and make it easy for the media to say it was a hate crime. Who knows? Although the senator was shot and killed, he may not have been the actual target. It is possible it was a hate crime, however other possibilities should be investigated.

Excuse me but isn't pretty much every murder a hate crime? I mean how many are done by contract killers who are only doing it to get paid?
um. no. You can murder someone in varying degrees (maybe a legal term there you can investigate). Maybe you do it voluntarily or involuntary (shit, that sounds like a legal term as well). I am guessing that murders can also occur during a felony such as a bank robbery where the murder happens when the criminal is jus trying to get away and doesn't hate anybody.
I suspect there are lots of murders that aren't hate crimes at all. But hey that's just me. Maybe next time, I will just jot down what pops into my head without thinking what I am saying is utter bullshit.

Sadly, you are mostly correcrt. I live in a predominantly black neighborhood, and every time (and I do mean every single time) I have a hostile interaction with a black person, one of the first things that spew from the orifice on their face is either 1) they vehemently call me a "MOTHERFUCKING CRACKER!!", or 2) ask me "Why do you hate blacks?". Usually, statement 1 comes from the males and 2 comes from the females. Their ages seem to make little, if any, difference. I should point out that there are many Hispanics in the area as well, and I get similar responses from them most of the time. It would be amusing were it not so sad. Then again, since everytime the interaction degenerates to the point of exchanging blows, they tuck their tails and scurry away like little girls..........so it is amusing. By far, the majority of these incidents have ocurred at the local convenience store when the losers try to cut the line, or commit some other act that demonstrates a total lack of consideration for others. I try to treat others as they treat me. Unfortunately, I am frequently treated very badly by my fellow citizens.
As an aside I have a question for ZH readers, simce it is a global audience. In my considerable experience with black people, they seem to display certain tendencies as a group. Here in central Florida, USA, they tend to only stop at a stop sign if they absolutely must to avoid impact, they never want to wait their turn in any line, and frequently stop their cars in the traffic lanes for any reason that suits them. A trend of defiance of any rules or authority seems to be the underlying motive, but that is speculation on my part. Don't get me wrong, since we are all assorted flavors of HUMAN, we are all severly defective. I am just curious if this is just a local phenomenon.
