Russia, Greece Ink Pipeline Deal As Gazprom Boosts Ukraine Bypass

Tyler Durden's picture

Two weeks ago, in “Greece Breaks America’s Heart, Will Sign MOU With Russia For Gas Pipeline,” we highlighted comments from Greek Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis which indicated that Athens was prepared to sign an MOU with Russia on the Turkish Stream pipeline.

As a reminder, The Turkish Stream will allow Gazprom to bypass Bulgaria by piping gas through Turkey, then through Greece, Serbia, and Hungary straight to the Austrian central hub.

Washington urged Greece to spurn the Russians and support an alternative pipeline plan designed to let the EU tap into Caspian gas via a series of connecting pipelines running from Azerbaijan to Italy. The Greeks, seeing no need to view the two pipeline projects as competitors, indicated that they would be open to supporting both. “Greece is no one’s property,” Lafazanis said, adding that Athens would “move based on its national interests.”

As is becoming more apparent by the day, the country’s “national interests” are clearly not aligned with the rest of Europe and to the extent Gazprom would be willing to advance Greece a portion of the projected revenues from its portion of the pipeline, Athens interests very clearly align with Moscow’s which is why no one should be surprised that Greek energy officials indicated Thursday that the MOU was a done deal. WSJ has more:

Greece is expecting to sign a preliminary agreement for the country’s participation in Russia’s planned extension of a gas pipeline through Greek territory, Greek energy ministry officials said Thursday..

The potential Greek-Russian agreement, which wouldn’t be legally binding, is expected to be signed Friday during Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ visit to an economic conference in St. Petersburg.

Mr. Tsipras is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday on the sidelines of the forum.

The agreement on the so-called ’Turkish Stream’ gas pipeline, which would bring Russian gas to Europe through Greece and Turkey, is expected to be signed by the Russian and Greek Energy Ministers, the Greek officials said.

But the Turkish Stream MOU with Greece wasn’t the only preliminary energy deal Gazprom inked on Thursday. The company also signed a memorandum of intent with Shell, E.On and OMV to double the capacity of the Nord Stream pipeline — the shortest route from Russian gas fields to Europe — to 110bcm/year.

Here’s WSJ again:

State-controlled Gazprom said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Royal Dutch Shell, Germany’s E. ON and Austria’s OMV AG to add two lines to the Nord Stream pipeline, opened in 2011 as part of a Russian strategy to circumvent transit countries such as Ukraine.

Gazprom said the additional pipelines in the Baltic would double Nord Stream’s current capacity of 55 billion cubic meters a year. Gazprom accounts for one-third of the European Union’s imports, around half of which is transported through Ukraine.

Gazprom said the companies would form a joint venture for the project. The creation of additional transport infrastructure along the shortest route connecting gas fields in northern Russia and markets in Europe will facilitate an increase in the security and reliability of deliveries under new contracts, said Gazprom Chief Executive Alexei Miller.

(Nord Stream line)

It appears Russia is making progress in efforts to facilitate the unimpeded flow of gas to Europe even as the crisis in Ukraine has escalated recently in the face of conflicting reports about artillery fire and various other violations of the ceasefire struck four months ago in Minsk. Gazprom also faces anti-trust charges filed in April by the EU Commission.

Perphaps Moscow thinks now is a good time to beef up the capacity of existing supply routes considering the increasinly tenuous situation in Ukraine and given that events in the Middle East may eventually conspire to bring a new source of supply for the EU online...

The last map with the Qatar-Turkey Pipeline in purple is a joke. Nobody is going to build a pipeline through that part of Syria - they're going to overthrow Assad and take over the existing (but unused) pipeline from Amman, Jordan to Turkey.

WSJ owners would find it 'uncomfortable' to suggest that Israel has every intention of tapping into the Qatari-Turkey pipeline and eventually use it to ship their Leviathan gas to Turkey/Europe. The Qatari pipeline is going straight to Amman where Israel can control it. Just like the Saudi oil pipeline will go to Amman, where Israel can tap into it and ship it to Haifa. Just like the Blood-for-oil Mosul-Haifa pipeline is going through Amman before going to Haifa.

Israel fully intends for all Mideast oil to trasit through Amman, making it difficult or impossible for Arab countries to boycott oil sales to Israel. They will tap into Amman and take as much as they want, and fuck whatever the Arab world wants or thinks about it. When Leviathan gas starts flowing, they will take over (or just steal) the Amman-Turkey gas pipeline for their use. If Qatar objects to being shut out, Israel will just bomb the shit out of the Saudi part, giving them exclusive use of the now unused Amman-Syria-Turkey portion.

EVERYTHING going on in the Middle East is to ensure Israel's control of oil and gas, and guarantee that they will never be boycotted by anyone again. Saddam Hussein boycotted all oil sales to Israel and would never permit the Blood-for-Oil Mosul-Haifa pipeline. Israel had him killed and his country and military destroyed. They (through their proxy: the U.S.) killed a million Iraqis and eight thousand plus American troops. British SAS guys were send directly to the Blood-for-Oil pumping stations and ordered to guard them. Israel WILL control all the gas and oil in the ME. The purple pipeline is utter B.S. meant to distract the plebes from the real route of any gas or oil pipeline.

Jordan serves as a useful stooge for now. If push came to shove, Israel would just annex Jordan and start building settlements there. After they stold all the oil and gas pipelines for their own use. You'll know when that's starting to happen when ISIS mysteriously shows up in Jordan and starts car-bombing the hell out of it. The King will be a push-over, Jordan will be declared part of some caliphate and then Israel will command U.S. troops to go in and take over. When the smoke clears, Israel will have annexed all the pipelines and ports in Jordan, leaving Saudi Arabia the useless Eastern deserts.

Yeah, weburke, except for this part "...will allow Gazprom to bypass Bulgaria by piping gas through Turkey, then through Greece, Serbia, and Hungary straight to the Austrian central hub."

Take a look at the 1st map. The one the author does not know how to read. Greece to Serbia? You have to go through Macedonia first. The author left out/ forgot about Macedonia ... which is significant ... because the Zio-NeoCons are right now in the process of destabalizing Macedonia, in the same way they just recently destroyed Ukraine.

“We still don't know who stands behind this paramilitary formation. We don't know who organized them”..."The choice of many opposition movements and NGOs, inspired by the West, that favor the logic of the street and the known scenario of a 'colored revolution', is full of dangerous consequences," a Russian government spokesman said.

But there is no reason to bypass Bulgaria, cb, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary.  Practically a straight line.  Shorter pipe.  Serbia and Bulgaria both use the Cyrillic. Both are Eastern Orthodox as is their Big Brother.

Russia prefered this arrangement of countries, pipeline and routing to South Stream which is the reason we heard no objection.

Cyrillic and Eastern Orthodox you can't get any closer to Russia than that.

I'm not German, Russian or American and thus i have no horse in this race. However, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the West (US, UK and France and rest of the western allies) and the Soviets are all guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide for what they've done against the German civilians and prisoners of war, AFTER THE WAR has ended (the number of victims may be as high as 6 million but not lower than 3 million - that'd be DEATHS). Even the Ukraine situation today derives a lot from the deals made at the end of the 2nd world war: Soviet Union stole the western part of Poland (Lvov for instance, historically a Polish province is now in Ukraine). To compensate Poland for the loss of territory in the East, the allies stole hundred of km of German territory. Now we have ancient (1000+ years old, including a former German Palatinate capital) in Poland. Basically Poland's borders were moved hundred of kilometers to the West in Germany's detriment.

P.S.: a lot of the victims in the former German territories in Poland and in the predominantly German areas in Czechoslovakia were caused by CIVILIANS. For that i affirm that these countries should be held to the same standard as Germany is held (including compensations due to harm done to life and property of ethnic Germans in the AFTERMATH of WW 2).

There were massive Soviet losses in first hours.

Agree with you, Germans and Russians are natural allies, but as you can see here in the case of kowalli too many Russians fall prey to Putin´s braindead nationalistic propaganda.

It´s a pitty to see how Russia is making the same mistakes again and engages in a pointless arms race, which will again bleed the Russian economy dry. I hope this will end soon and Russia will become a respected partner of Europe again.

THere´s a deep feeling of humiliation within the Russian society tat has to do with the burst of the Sowjet empire and i have no clue what can be done to overcome this mood. And there are of course a lot of cold war warriors left in the US that want to humiliate Russia even further. The Germans are ready to overcome all this, but BS like the war in eastern Ukraine and some other things have to stop first.

Something to be trumpeted when in the interest of the US and ignored when not in the interest of the US. Doesn't apply to Deutschland because their 'sovereignty' consists of spreading their ass cheeks for Uncle Sam's red, white, and blue boner.

United Nations Charta?

Again, something to be trumpeted when in the interest of the US and ignored when not in the interest of the US. For example, the sanctions against Iran are in violation of the UN charter. This is ignored by Deutschland because Uncle Sam is balls deep in their rectum.

Treaty of 1994?

Please be specific. Which treaty?

Also, if you mistakenly mean the Budapest Memorandum, you are loudly wrong. It was an understanding, not a treaty. The US wiped its ass with it on a regular basis, culminating in the illegal (per the Ukrainian constitution) and violent overthrow of the Ukrainian government in February 2014.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/02/how-gazan-natural-gas-became-epicenter-international-power-struggle

I can see the US killing tens of thousands and using salaifist mercenaries to do it to thwart Russian gas transits/monopoly -

and perhaps that of Iran - recall that the Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline deal was inked weeks before Syria went haywire.

What I have trouble believing is that long standing plans to Balkanize Arab states have nothing to do with the rise of ISIS and proxy war on Assad, and I have trouble believing a heavily Israel lobby influenced US .gov will allow Qatari gas, even if a pipeline could be built through this war zone chaos,  to compete with Israel's huge natural gas find.

I just don't buy it.  Why do you?

You assume that it they build the pipeline, someone will buy your gas.  Austria, even if it decides to buy gas, is too small to cover the cost.

For Putin and Co the pipeline, the Olympics, the World Cup serve 2 purposes:  to "stick it" to the evil yankees, and to enrich Timchenko, Rottenberg brothers, and the rest of the "inner curcle."  There's a reason why winter olympics cost $50 billion, and why russian oil and gas pipelines cost 5-7X more per 1 km than what it cost to build similar pipelines in the rest of the world.

Assad is dead man walking. The Qatari gas will be in Europe years before former "builders of communism" will complete this (yet to be agreed upon and with no clear customers) gig.

If you think a pipeline from Qatar to Europe will be completed, built through Syria, any time in the next 5 years, if not 10 - you are an idiot.  And Assad's removal by the US/Saudi/Turkish axis, with Israeli help, has killed tens of thousands and destroyed much or most of the infrastructure.  If and When Assad falls, it will be far, far worse for the Syrian people, as the US and its allies continue to fuel the fire.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, INC.
Non-profit Delaware Corporation
Incorporation Date: 4/19/89
File No. 2193946
The corporation is registered in the state of Delaware.

De Facto Congressmen, Allen West Confesses U.S. President is CEO!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B8aWGweXoCk

The 14th Amendmnent creates a 'corporate person' aka 'citizen'. That amendment is the root of the fraud that is currently occuring in this country. This amendment defined what a 'citizen' was, is, and could be. It eliminated all rights to property and transfered them to the state. That is why you must 'register' everything with the state. The term 'registration' means to give up all rights and ownership, that is why no one owns anything in this country, because fictions(corporate persons) are dead and 'tell no tales' and 'own nothing'. Senate Report 93-549 confirms that Americans live under a dictatorship, own no property, and never can. This amendment allowed for the creation of the Act of 1871, which then in turn allowed for the creation of The Federal Reserve Act, which in turn lead to the Emergency Banking Act which dissolved the Republician form of government and replaced with a democracy. This amendment needs to gone the way of the Prohibition Amendment. Do your research the Secretary of State(Not the President who is supposed to) signed the Executive Orders in 1868 ratifing the 14th Amendment ahead of the last state and to publish it. The Secretary of State was the one who finalized it and only the President can finalize them. It is a fraud and needs to go.

I may also add, Look this up CRS Report for Congress Order Code 98-611 page 5, and I quote:

"The sixth executive order, dated July 20, 1868, and concerning the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, was also signed by Secretary Seward and has the form of a proclamation. The same was true of the seventh executive order, dated July 28, 1868, certifying the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment and ordering its publication."
Only the President can sign executive orders, and Johnson did not want to sign it. So there is fraud right there, not to mention the fact that 2 states recinded before it was ratified.
