An American Biologist Sums Up Financial Markets Perfectly

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Tim Price via Sovereign man blog,

The great biologist E.O. Wilson once observed:

“The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic emotions; medieval institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall.”

In few arenas are our mental shortcomings thrown into more stark relief than in the investment markets. Our brains evolved ‘fight or flight’ mechanisms to enable us to recognise potential predators in the wild. However, they have not yet had the evolutionary time to help us respond to threats – real or perceived – in the economy, bond or stock markets.

In recent weeks we’ve highlighted the aberrant price and yield volatility of longer dated German government bonds.

Since these instruments represent something close to the ‘risk-free’ rate for the euro zone, the fact that their prices are convulsing like someone in an electric chair hardly bodes well for future price stability across other capital markets.

It’s not fair just to blame Greece – how about the central banks that drove interest rates down to zero, effectively forcing investors into higher risk markets?

The markets cocktail of 2015 is a strong one, and whatever decision you ultimately make involves having to take a sip or two.

Bond prices are high (but we think unlikely to go meaningfully higher – there’s certainly insufficient value there for us).

Most stock market levels are high (but may easily go higher).

Currency volatility is high.

Commodity price volatility is high.

Even deciding to hoard cash is a decision to embrace an unusual level of risk these days – as Greece may confirm in due course.

*  *  *

Empires Rise, they peak, they decline, they collapse, this is the cycle of history.

This historical pattern has formed and is already underway in many parts of the world, including the United States.

Don’t be one of the millions of people who gets their savings, retirement, and investments wiped out.

I am trying to remember the joke about the three clergies.  One a catholic, a baptist and a rabbi.  They were deciding how to split the morning service.  In other words how much for God and how much for themselves.  The catholic priest suggested sending money to a missionary in Africa [okay so I don't remember the joke and I am making this up as I go, you know like our government] The Baptist wanted money for a revival  and that sort of thing.  The Rabbi to send money for starving kids and education.   The problem was they did not know how to split it up between themselves and God.  This went on for a while until the Rabbi came up with an idea.  He said "How about if we put all the money in a big basket.  The other two said yeah and, and we pray for guidance together?  The Rabbi said no, we throw the money up toward the sky as hard and high as we can.  What? said the Baptist. The Rabbi said yes!  And whatever God wants he can keep the rest is for us.

Does that sound like our monetary policies?

""This transcendent searching has been hijacked by the tribal religions. So I would say that for the sake of human progress, the best thing we could possibly do would be to diminish, to the point of eliminating, religious faiths. But certainly not eliminating the natural yearnings of our species or the asking of these great questions.""

I don't consider myself an athiest, but I totally understand- and agree with Wilson's statement.  I'd never heard of the dude before, but IMHO, he's exactly right.  Religion has absolutely nothing to do with what I call God.

If there's a God, and I believe there is, I see no need in the intermediaries we call religion.

Christ founded his Church for a reason. You cannot just avoid it or pretend it's not there. A lot of people confuse the actions of men and get angry at the Church, and reject GOD. This anger, like the fraud E.O. Wilson, is misdirected. Men are always going to be imperfect.

You are, by definition of the Church, an atheist if you reject religion.

Hahahaha.

I'm afraid christians are stuck with their bible which sort of restricts them from making any logical argument.

These guys fully believe that the laws of physics will be suspended in the coming end times or rapture or whatever they call it. This is akin to Galileo arguing with the catholic church that the earth revolved around the sun. It wasn't until 1992 that pope John Paul II conceded that the earth was not stationary.

Now how else can you paint the catholic church as anything but intellectually inferior in such circumstances. There was a man making physical observations PROVING the earth revolved around the sun. Then we launched satellites and rocket ships and used mathematical calculations whose models and predictions held up time and time again. Yet the catholic church still clung to ancient beliefs.

This is moronic, stupid, infantile, dumb, embarrassing in it's foolishness.

How else do you describe this. The word stupid exists to describe the representatives of the catholic church in this example, does it not.

Fast forward to today and we are still arguing about the laws of physics with dummies.

"I'm afraid christians are stuck with their bible which sort of restricts them from making any logical argument."

The Bible is not at odds with logic.

Many things can be inferred from physical observation- but not everything.

The laws of physics, to a large degree, are theoretical in nature. Because mathematical formulae can be derived in order to describe a process does not make it a fact (components and processes may be misunderstood/misdescribed- yet the math still "works.")

Geocencricity vs heliocentricity is still undecided. All the same formulas can be used to describe, and support either model.

I don't know what to say Seek. It's like you are frozen in the ancient past and all the progress science has made in understanding the universe is all for nothing.

"Geocencricity vs heliocentricity is still undecided."

Ahhhh, no, it has been decided a long time ago.

If the earth is at the centre of the universe and the the sun and planets revolve around the earth, yet the planets also revolve around the sun, you need some vastly more complex mathematics than F = G(m1 x m2)/r squared.

You are demonstrating classic brainwashing when the "purported" shepperds of the christian faith (catholic church) admit heliocentricity and you can't.

Bottom line is you are incapable of accepting scientific evidence, even evidence as benign as heliocentricity. The reason is simple, if you do, your whole world view comes crashing down. It's a shame, reality isn't that, that bad.

If old Luca Popovs paper had any mertit whatsoever it would be peer reviewed, it's claims verified by experiement and observation and the entire discipline of physics would be turned on it's head. And you know what? If this could be done scientists would love it because it would be exciting, it would open new avenues for research and discovery, they'd be like kids in a candy shop. But they are adults, they accept the scientific method and the "answers" it unveils, whether they like the answers or not.

Let's forget complex formulas for a moment. The sun is a million times as massive as the earth. If the sun is rotating around the earth at an incredible speed, from where does the force holding the sun in its orbit originate?

In your own words Seek, from where does that force originate? I am afraid you are going to say god because then it alleviates you of any effort or accountability, which pretty much sums up the entire construct of religion.

Yet another area where theists trip over themselves. On one hand they say god created everything perfect and it was man who succumb to temptation and sin that has caused all the problems.

So if god created everything perfect he must have created man perfect.

If god created man perfect then man would not have succumb to temptaion and sin.

But man did succumb to tempation and sin so man is obviously not perfect.

So god did not create man perfect.

Therefore gods creation was not perfect.

Shhhh, you don't want to analyse this stuff too deeply, the poor old christians will have a brain aneurism.

The bottom line is it probably all boils down to right hemispshere predominance over left. Theists are probably more likely to have a dominant righrt hemispere so aren't really that strong on logic. Ever wonder why theists see the face of jesus in the most unlikely of places:

"The right hemisphere is mainly in charge of spatial abilities, face recognition and processing music"

I visited a coptic christian church in Egypt to witness these absolute nut cases revering a patch of mould on the wall of the church. I was standing 6 ft from the wall when these people would walk up to the wall, stroke it, then stroke their babies heads. Crazy stuff. I couldn't see anything that resembled a smiley face let alone an image of jesus. The mere fact that this relates to religious belief forces everybody to just accept it rather that call it for it really is: FUCKING INSANITY.

Right hemisphered people are probably more susceptible to brain washing as well simply because the critical thinking isn't as strong. I've asked these people many times is there anything in the bible they don't believe and more often than not the answer is no. There are exceptions to the rule of course. Tall Tom for example doesn't believe the literal Noah's ark story yet people like Seek_Truth and JLee believe the entire story hook line and sinker.

This, all this, all these debates have got nothing to do with god or jesus, and everything to do with psychology and neuroscience.

I happen to be among them.

I am not a proponent of revering instruments of death (cross) nor relics (your example of the moldy wall), mother of heaven (Mary worship), the immortality of all souls, hell as a place of eternal torment, triune gods, etc

Why? Because if one actually takes the time to study the entire Bible carefully- none of those teachings exist therein (contextually).

These debates have everything to do with God, gods or Jesus, and everything to do with psychology and neuroscience. (FIFY)

2. God created mankind with free will- the ability to decide a course of action.

3. God set 2 trees in the Garden of Eden- the Tree of Life, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. http://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/justintaylor/2011/09/05/the-tree...

4. Eve was deceived by Satan, in the form of a serpent- she was deceived, and ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

5. Adam was not deceived (http://biblehub.com/1_timothy/2-14.htm), yet he ate of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, allowing her to make his decision for him (just like the vast majority of men these days).

That is how humankind came to be in its fallen state.

I think you are on the right page here.  The church is made of people gathering to worship.  The church is not religion, as in, the Catholic Church which is really more of a world wide government that decides who gets to stay and who has to leave, for a fee of course.

The simple minded on both sides are unable to see the distinction.  The clever ones refuse to see it because they are so sophisticated.  Of course most sophisticated types don't believe in conspiracies but rather accidental history.  This brings us back to simplemindedness.

FREEDOM OF RELIGION.  Thank you.

I think the Founding Fathers put Freedom of Religion in the Bill of Rights because their voters demanded protection AGAINST powerful international organized churches.  Voters understood that they needed their smaller, independent churches to organize politically, the same way the powerful international organized churches have ALWAYS organized politically.  Voters without smaller, independent, politically-active churches would see the powerful international organized churches slowly but surely take over the governments.  Just as they had in Europe.  After all, that's what powerful international organized churches do best.  And once they take over, it can take hundreds of years (e.g. The Dark Ages) to regain control from them.

Today many smaller, independent churches have quit working politically, and therefore many governments have been lost to the same powerful international organized churches that ruled Europe during The Dark Ages.

Look Brother, I ain't your enemy, but I wonder why you don't wonder that every religion that has ever existed just might be wrong.

It is physically and demonstrably possible that they might all be wrong.

Conversely, it is quite easily provable that they can't all be right.

Anyone who continues to go to a catholic church is as evil as the priests who have for centuries sodomised boys and as evil as their superiors who have covered up their actions.

The problems of the catholic church are so incredibly simple to solve. All memebers just don't show up on Sunday until all evil doers are rooted out and jailed.

But bleeding hearts don't really give a shit about all the abuse because it doesn't effect them.

What would it take for people to leave the catholic church. I'll tell you. It would take their children to be fucked up the arse until their revulsion with the organisation was sufficient.

Quit supporting one of the most evil empires on the face of the earth.

The former head of the catholic church here in Australia, George Pell, was right in the thick of the cover ups of the boy fuckers. He did such a good job at covering up crimes he was promoted to the vatican as an economic adviser. Just like goldman sachs, if you tow the line you get promoted. More likely he was sent to the vatican as "boy fucking cover up" adviser.

He must wonder what happened to his life when the main topic of discussion in his public appearances in Australia were about sodomy.

It'd be funny if it wasn't so serious.

Call me what you will JLee but if you are here to support the catholic church you are at best just lazy and stupid and at worst a personification of the satan you warn everyone else about.

Boycott the church until the little boy ass fuckers are weeded out and prosecuted along with the superiors who covered their crimes up.

And if you support a Company that has in its employ, pedophiles, it makes you as guilty as them.

It's a slippery slope.

I'm non-denominational, and there are many issues I have with Catholic and Protestant teachings- yet, in the end, they are made up of flawed, fallen humans like you and I.

I am not excusing their behavior- merely pointing out the inconsistancies in your position.

I agree with your observation however, this is particularly easy to deal with., just don't show up to church. We all do things like purchase products from companies that, for example, have a dubious environmental track record, but their products are cheap so it is difficult for people to act. But not showing up to church actually requires less effort than actually going and it would not take long for the problem to be instantly resolved. Additionally, theists have a bit of a moral obligation as they continually paint themselves as having a higher moral ethic than the non believers.

It is so simple and the fact that NOBODY GIVES A SHIT highlights just how screwed humans really are.

Empires don’t collapse overnight.

But mostly the end by invasion.

England and Spain didn’t get invaded.

Spain was invaded by the French, and England was destroyed during Wo2.

And people go broke slowly. Not everybody, the 1% always existed.

So don’t think you’ll be a hero with a few bars of silver if you don’t have a plan.

If gold and silver do explode higher, I’d use my assets to become a PM broker. No way in hell I’d sell it to a broker myself and give him 20% on a single trade.

It’s easy, I know this shit inside out and did I say easy?

The money changers may have always been the bad guys, but they where the bad guys that made money.

How I see it.

The idea of the New World, here in America, was one where anyone from anywhere ( more or less) could come to this land, and try to make his way.
There where rules and some law. But mostly, it was the law of " survival of the fittest " . I like that. Most of you probably like that.

Then we started to mature as a nation. Then crept in the politics. More laws. Taxes. Social safety nets. More laws. Fees. More taxes. Now we, as a society have to, by law, give a break and a helping hand to the fuckwads of this land. And feed these useless pieces of shit. And speak their language, if they don't know ours. And we are all equal, blah, blah, blah.
No. We are not. Some are smart. Some are physically agile and talented. Some can sing and entertain. And some are just cannon fodder that would have died at the first winter.
Darwin would have a fucking field day. He would rewrite his theory, and you would end up with a movie script. Idiocracy. No wonder that does not get a lot of AirPlay.
And me, I'm just a disgruntled old white guy, looking around around and going "WTF???"
Every major US city is a zoo. But nobody knows why.
Our kids come out of high school, and can't read. No one knows why.
Our military is all over the globe, and we are feared and hated. No one knows why.
Our economy is in the toilet. Can't figure it out.
Our borders are wide the fuck open. It's policy.

I'll bet any ten that post here, picked at random, could devise a plan to solve our problems and have us on the right track in two years.
And the wife is hounding me about the bills, again. And I've worked all my life since I was 15. And it's never been this fucked up. I have skills 5 men would take a lifetime to aquire, but no one respects them. Or wants to pay for them. I joked with my buddy today. He is paying an ILLEAGAL ElSalvadoran what I have to fight for, every week. Now that's frickin hilarious.
Maybe, just maybe, if I where a nicer person, things would be better. ???
That turned into a rant. Oh well.

Hi technology and Communications alone have put them in the stratosphere compared to the long ago British past.

Britain may be a model though for how the first world populations will have to have some sort of basic subsistence level of living a life, since jobs, careers, and small businesses that used to employ the masses have and will continue to disappear far faster than the world's human beans continue to propagate with no thought of what their progeny will do with their lives.

I have thought much on this topic, and while I have no formal training in the subject, or even a deep layman's knowledge, it is my opinion that psychopathy has derailed mankind.

What we call psychopathy served mankind well as we evolved out on the plains of Africa and the steppes of Asia. However, with the establishment of civilization, psychopathy turned from a unify force against nature and others, to the enemy within.

Further development of mankind was further arrested, stopped, in 1896, February 14th. to be exact.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

The end is near, everything is a risk, protect your savings.

Sounds like the only thing to do is just spend it all. Every country has a government and FedGov will take the assets people tried to put overseas first by citing forms that weren't filed or filed incorrectly. FedGov will get cooperation of foreign governments and banks through threats or by giving up a piece of the action. They will target the domestic assets of people with assets overseas if they cant' get cooperation. They will take the money overseas first because most americans won't give a shit about people who had foreign assets.

They will always take what they can call a crime or demonize socially first because they need the approval of the masses as long as they can retain it.

With 'Paleolithic Emotions' the 'institutions' cannot be better than mideval - lest they be ignored, subverted, or rebelled against...

And come to think of it, we cannot even have mideval institutions...because we've corrupted even them in the lust to grab the economic juicy fruit now despite the certain capture and destruction clearly attached to it.

The economic theories of Socialism, Communism, Corporateism, with Fiat Currency, Fractional Reserve Banking, and Central Banking central to all three, requires the infinite expansion of credit to continue to function, exactly like any other pyramid scheme.    Moreover, these drawbacks were absolutely crystal clear from the moment when these systems came into existence.    Politically, the common thread between all three systems is that they steal the wealth of the middle and split it amongst the economic bottom rung in return for votes, while conserving the rest for the owners of the system.   Marx actually says this when describing who are the communists in the communist manifesto.

Regardless, in the rush to ill-gotten-gains - theft - the powers that be ignored, and continue to ignore that these drawbacks make any such system into an inescapable trap - essentially a monkey trap,

In fact it is EXACTLY a monkey trap.  They could withdraw from the trap at any time...just not with the proceeds of the theft.  And so they, and we, remain trapped.  It is their lust for larceny that traps them.

Son, you better beware
This world is rough, it can sho' get tough
There's a whole lotta trouble out there
There's women that love you for money
And there ain't no end to the lies
If you wanna live in this old world
Son, you better open your eyes
Wicked ways and wayward hearts

So I hit the road pulling my own load
Keeping my eyes on the signs
Taking my shots, taking those hard knocks
Living along with the times
Until I teamed up with a riverboat gambler
Her name was Sweet Corrine
She cleaned my pockets, she stole my car
She left me in a cloud of steam
Wicked ways and wayward hearts

This road gets long but I've got to roll on
On to my Destiny
I know how to fake that little double-steppin shuffle
And I know what it means to be free
There's a way that's wicked
There's a woman to trickya
You live the life that you choose
But a wayward heart won't get you nothin but trouble
Don't let it make a fool outta you

Wicked ways and wayward hearts

Wicked ways and wayward hearts
