Full retard. But what I really want to know is, is Facebook selling cheaply sourced offshore likes, or are these Made in USA likes?

Most are fake. It is used by people who produce no value to society by making bots to click likes for an article all the way to page 1 of google since google algo ranking bot loves social media. People spam their website with this crap and pop on google adsense so people can click the ads for a small revenue which is called CPC or cost per click. Yes the internet is super fucked up.

Revenue doesn't mean shit.

What matters is net profit.

Walmart nets $15-17 bn

Facebook nets $2.9bn

For Facebook to justify its market cap they need to grow their bottom line five fold. Tricky when they have already reached global saturation with their flagship.

But not necessarily the most effective. Who do you think uses facebook advertising anyway? Certainly not anyone selling anything tangible. Do you see Boeing selling airplanes on there? Shit no. The people who get the most use out of FB advertising are those who run websites dependant on ad venue. The xojane and BuzzFeed websites, with their click baity titles about "the 10 mostunbelievable nip-slips" or whatever. Its a cycle of trash. In fact its worse than trash, its completely vapid, hollow, nothingness.

I agree. But it is worldwide and nickels and dimes become billions of dollars. NBC is loaded with fancy multinational companies and it is a money losing pig. Comcast paid less just to take that bitch. The lure of Facebook is that it is truly worldwide and ubiquitous. You don't need to like it or use it, but you must admit that it is a profitable advertising platform.

Citation needed.

The profitable business owners do not waste money on Facebook advertising. It's profitable all right...for Facebook. For now.

This little peon brain of mine cannot comprehend the market caps of corporations such as FB and Google and Amazon when you compare revenue, assets (brick/mortar/inventory) to Walmart or an Oil company or manufacturer.

The latter companies will always be worth something if they are not indebted to the eyeballs and that also affects share value.

Facebook could be gone in a few days and there would be no physical evidence except for a data center here or there.

Hell, a person would be better off playing slots (slowly) :)

"The reason why people can actually do so little with their free time is that the truncation of their imagination deprives them of the faculty which made the state of freedom pleasurable in the first place. People have been refused freedom, and its value belittled, for such a long time that now people no longer like it. They need the shallow entertainment, by means of which cultural conservatism patronizes and humiliates them, in order to summon up the strength for work, which is required of them under the arrangement of society which cultural conservatism defends. This is one good reason why people have remained chained to their work, and to a system which trains them for work, long after that system has ceased to require their labour."

Market Cap (Capitalization) is a Wall Street term that attempts to define the overall value of a company in very simplistic terms. So what is Market Cap, anyway?

Market Cap is calculated is by taking the share price on any given day and then multiplying it by the number of shares outstanding. So if a company has a share price of $55.00 and 100,000,000 shares outstanding then the Market Cap is $55.00 x 100,000,000 or 5.5 Billion dollars.

Now let’s take a look at this concept a bit more closely. Ask yourself what determines the price of an individual stock. Then ask yourself if similar stocks have similar prices. Does IBM have a similar price of say, Apple, or Cisco. The answer is no. There is no relationship between the prices of these stocks although each is in the High Tech or Computer business. As of 6/23/15 IBM’s price was $168.65, Apple’s was $127.03 and Cisco’s was $28.79 so it is clear that computer related companies stock price has no relationship to each other.

The other component of Market Cap is the number of shares outstanding. Again, ask yourself what determines the number of shares outstanding in a company. Using the examples above, as of 6/23/15 IBM had 984 Million shares outstanding, Apple had 5.76 Billion, and Cisco had 5.09 Billion shares outstanding. So you can see that there isn’t any relationship between the number of shares that are outstanding for these three high tech companies.

From a mathematical standpoint each parameter is a variable, that is the number of shares could be any amount, and the price per share could be any amount. So a variable times a variable equals a variable. It’s like saying A x B = C, and that’s OK. But then saying  X x Y = Z and then comparing the values of C and Z as if they are somehow equivalent. Anybody that understands basic math would say this comparison is not valid. Yet on Wall Street it is considered valid and it is used every day to compare one company against another.

It’s also simplistic to assume that multiplying the number of shares times the price of each share determine the actual value of any company. If Wall Street had denominated Market Cap in Glibnicks, then fine. But they use the term Dollars. Now when you think of dollars, you think of real money in your pocket, the kind you can spend to buy things. And that’s what Wall Street want’s you to think about Market Cap. But it’s nonsense to try to value a company the size of IBM using such simplistic methodology.

It would be quite a feat to get your arms around the size of IBM. There are over 400,000 people that work for IBM. They do business in almost every country in the world. They have countless buildings, cars, hundreds of thousands of computers, from PC’s to Mainframes. They have hundreds of thousands of cash registers in thousands of retail stores. The pile of paper required to just list all of the assets IBM has would probably be 10 feet high, and it would take one of their mainframes to crunch all of it together. Yet Wall Street would have you believe that by taking the number of shares that are outstanding and multiplying it by the share price, you can get a fair representation of what IBM is worth. It’s inconceivable that anybody would buy into that notion.

Yet, there are hundreds of Mutual Funds that rely on this calculation to describe the components of Mutual Funds that they try to sell you. There are Large Cap funds, there are Small Cap funds, there are Mid Cap funds, well you get the idea. All of the “Cap” in these funds are calculated using this bogus arithmetic. Hard to believe, but it’s true.
