CNBC Demystified

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Doug Litowitz via TheAlphaPages.com,

CNBC presents a paradox in the hedge fund community.

It plays constantly, but hardly anybody watches it.

The channel mostly functions as white noise emanating from wall-mounted monitors on trading floors and in financial firms.

Given its ubiquity, one might think it was highly regarded.

But traders and portfolio managers treat CNBC with scorn or indifference.

Few rely on CNBC for market information, preferring Bloomberg terminals or proprietary data sources.

The situation resembles George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, where the protagonist Winston Smith tuned out the massive telescreen on his apartment wall that issued endless streams of positive news.

As an experiment, I polled several friends who have a combined 100 years of experience in hedge funds. They couldn’t recall anyone saying, “I just got a game-changing idea on CNBC.” And during rare mentions of the channel, the commenter opines on the female anchors’ attractiveness or the quality of the male anchors’ suits.

According to Nielsen, CNBC commands a market share many multiples of its nearest competitor, Fox Business News, and perhaps a dozen times that of its second competitor, the more elite-minded Bloomberg Television.

This is puzzling. How can something so unpopular be so popular?

The answer is complex, and requires a deep dive to find CNBC’s true purpose.

CNBC is a news show, or in other words, it is supposed to provide content, information, and stock market advice.

By journalistic standards, it falls short of its task.

Interviews feature softball sessions bordering on hero worship. The recent coverage in Davos at the World Economic Forum was shameless. Too often, CNBC accepts a devil’s bargain where they gain access to market leaders in return for tacit agreement to refrain from tough questions.

The ‘experts’ are self-anointed. Their predictions are never back-tested.

And whatever news it provides is already stale to market makers.

The screen is full of dizzying information without meaningful analysis, and commentators never broach broader social issues. A hollow, unconvincing conviviality prevails among its anchors, and whenever the market goes down or a guest becomes bearish, the anchors turn incredulous, brittle, defensive, and dumbfounded.

Last Fall, the anchors turned aggressive on Peter Schiff by forcing him to admit he wrongly predicted that Gold prices would rise, and he had to defend himself by noting that he was correct about predicting the housing crisis while CNBC was busy cheerleading. Exasperated, he said what everyone is thinking: “All you do is parade people who are wrong.”

Judged as a news show that is supposed to report objectively on the economy and the stock market – it is grievously flawed.

But at a deeper level, below consciousness, CNBC serves an indispensible shamanistic function, providing a kind of ideological placebo that calms everyone down by offering a series of comforting myths.

At this, it succeeds wildly.

Recall that the function of a shaman is to give puzzled victims a narrative framework for redemption, a story in which their afflictions can be warded off, and blessings bestowed, if they perform a certain ritual, or appease a demon, or ingest a magical substance. A person who consults a shaman does not seek evidence or back-testing. He wants a comforting myth that casts himself as master of his destiny when things go well, and as a blameless victim of the gods when things go wrong.

CNBC is an electronic shaman for investors.

Even with the sound turned off, it sends the underlying message that a master plan exists and we can find redemption in the markets, that there is a golden thread, a controlling logic to the chaos and indeterminacy around us. When we make money, it is because we have been wise and followed their sage advice. And when we don’t make money, when they fail to predict the next collapse, there will be no one to blame, because it was due to unforeseeable and mysterious forces.

This is what we want to hear.

All of us – from amateur investors to the greatest traders at the best hedge funds – on some unconscious level want to believe this. It is not simply that we want to hear that market indexes are rising; that may or may not be good news depending on one’s positions. Rather, we want to hear that whatever our strategy happens to be, there are well-dressed, positive, cheerful and confident people telling us that destiny is in our hands, and that the dream is within reach.

No one wants to hear that we are throwing hard-earned money to the cruel winds of malevolent and opaque forces, that billions, even trillions, are sloshing around vulnerable to unstable geopolitical and sociological events that defy rationality, or that fortunes can be won or lost because of some freak tragedy.

No one wants to hear that the market is propped up by the Federal Reserve, or that we are irrationally exuberant, or that earnings guidance is low-grade fiction.

We want to be reassured by serious men and women in suits who tell us that events are looking up, that problems are solvable, that the market is rational, that we are scientists, not gamblers.

And most important, we can all be winners if we just listen to their experts on shows like Fast Money and Mad Money. Just as the audience at a magic show suspends disbelief while the magician saws a body in half, the CNBC viewers suspend disbelief about whether the ‘experts’ on the screen were correct yesterday, or the day before, or the month before.

To watch CNBC – even volume off – is to be transported to a world where propitious events are on the horizon, where people are busy, serious, and sober. The people are smiling, boarding planes, presenting charts in glass conference rooms, balancing their portfolios and building their nest eggs.

They are me, I am them, we are all watching CNBC together, and we are all in the know.

It’s a nice place to be. And that should be your first clue that it isn’t real.

i confess to watching it occasionally, like I do all news shows. If you see it for what it is- propaganda, it can be interesting, if for no ther reason than to understand why people think the way they do. Its interesting to see how they shape a story, based on their view point. No matter what the story is, it somehow enforces their worldview, no mater how warped it may be.

As an aside, we all agree this charade of a market built on a mountain of debt will come crashing down at some point, and it will be worth it keeping a basic cable subscription to watch it come crashing down live, on CNBC. keep your beer and popcorn handy, bitchez

The yids have controlled TV for a very long time how.   One time there was a saying. All roads lead to Rome.  Now that saying has been replaced . All roads lead to Tel Aviv.  Jews think we should all bow down and kiss jewish ass and jewish feet because we are just cattle and animals in this world according to the Talmud.  But  I will not. Not now, not ever. So where does that leave us?  Let's humbug and get this thing overwith. Its way past time now.

If you want to "reality check" on our modern cultural slide as TV indicates..you got to check out YouTube and watch some some of the  episodes of the number one TV show in Amercia in the 1950's "Life is Worth Living" and number one topic of concern "nuclear war" versus todays number one reality shows "Celebrity Wife Swap" and its number one topic "Bruce Jenner". The stark contrast could not be more different for a nation within a single generation. Today we are a culture of no true God, no true morals, no true ethics and thus we haver no true society/civilization as we do not share common values.  Television has now truely become the "boob tube"

Old cons get recycled with new bogeymen.  Pick your geopolitical Emmanuel Goldstein: Saddam, Ghaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Pooty-poot, Assad...  More recently, we have Agenda 21, the declaration of war against YOU, which means attacking all that makes you strong, from your values and morality to your rights to your financial independence to your health and nutrition, ostensibly "to save the planet" from environmental Al Qaeda in the form of "Global Cooling," subsequently replaced with "Global Warming," finally diluted into strategically ambiguous "Climate Change."  All wars of conquest are started with lies, fraud and deception.

"When you tell a lie, tell big lies... In the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility... In the primitive simplicity of [the mind of the masses] they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying." - Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, 1926, p. 472

CNBC's declining viewer rates imply that the myth about us blond people supposedly being "more appealing" than other people is just that: A myth. Tastes differ, and there is certainly no absolute standard of beauty.

Bloomberg has a more diverse cast, and surpasses CNBC's viewer ratings by a large margin because of it. That is telling, and does not bode well for white supremacy's many delusions.

How far has the market gone up when adjusted for inflation this year?  I do understand your point however.  The market will continue to rise gradually until it doesn't simply because people believe that "everything is awesome" with the economy as long as the market rises.  Fundamentals and technicals no longer matter because there are not many players in the market anymore; movements are the result of Central Banks buying stocks and company stock buybacks on near zero loans.  Most companies are not investing their high profits into new capital projects and the party eventually ends badly for all of us to one degree or another.  If we reach a point where there is a serious correction; there will be so many on the sell side and not enough on the buy side to compensate...the next serious fall will be very serious.  My apologies for the ramble.

The only way CNBC can do what it does is through a high level and secret agreement with the Federal Government.  It was going out of business after the 2nd Great Depression started and so was approached by the Feds to be the economy cheerleader.  Big money talks.

It's far simpler than that.   CNBC is a business attempting to sell commercial airtime to Wall Street firms, many of whom appear as guests on their shows.   They're hardly going to be objective if it affects their bottom line.   Today it's more entertainment than journalism.  It's not just limited to CNBC - it's just about all old media.  As sales continue to die at an alarming rate they're more determined not to lose any clients through something that might be deemed 'journalism'.   That's coming from a broadcast journalist of 20 years. The industry is on is last legs.

Oh and btw, I did have the end of my penis chopped off at birth so I'm very well aware of the fixed moreal codes and how they work.

Is the phrase "Get Christ?" Kind of like "Got Milk?"

I assume you have read none of them; that part is obvious.  You can never remember that which you do not know.  One day you will know for sure when you personally meet face to face with Jesus and you will have what to stand on?  Your goodnesss?  You did not know?  How could I have known? I'm a moral person? or Nothing?  You know in your heart that there is more to life than the present reality, for it is built into the fabric of all men unless you are not a man.  As it is written.  If you are a created being, then you have a Creator just as an automobile has an auto-maker.  If you deny you are a created being, then your reason, logic and intellect must be called into question.

I've read quite a bit in the bible but I'm sure that's the only one you've actually read.  It's pretty boring actually and I'm not huge on genital mutilation or human sacrifices so it really didn't hit home with me.  Also that mass murder thing the israelites do is kind of hard to deal with and I also got the theme that God really likes punishing people, even his own son, for things that he knew they were going to do.  He doesn't seem like a nice man, or woman, or I dunno that Holy Ghost guy is a tranny or something I guess.

I might have been created but I don't think that my creator would want part of my penis to be chopped off.  Does it make sense that a creator would create foreskin so that the parents of the child would pay money to someone who's an expert at chopping off foreskin? If I created a car I wouldn't decide to put a random worthless gear in the engine and expect the person who bought the car to pay for it to be removed upon delivery of the vehicle, that would be insane.

It's all bullshit, and it's bad for me.

I'm glad that you're interested in my immortal soul (although you show no worry about my penis) but maybe you can try and convince me to save it in a less condescending way, I don't think you're going to get anywhere with most people bullying them into believing they were a car created by the God of cars Henry Ford or something weird like that.

I've read quite a bit in the bible

You have claimed to have read quite a bit in the Bible? Then you will understand that there were THREE Covenants or Dispensations if you have ANY READING COMPREHENSION. We are in the Third and the Final. (A Covenant is a CONTRACT, a promise to be fulfilled..)

I might have been created but I don't think that my creator would want part of my penis to be chopped off.

What does the Bible, specifically the New Covenant, have to say about that?

5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 5:2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 5:3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" (Galatians 5:1-7 KJV)

In fact  according to the New Covenant if you are circumcisized and seek justification because of that then you are fallen from grace and have NO HOPE OF SALVATION.

That does not read as if God Almighty wants you to chop off the foreskin of your penis.

Your DISHONESTY is what earned you a RARE JUNK from me. Or was it your SHALLOW THINKING and your LACK OF READING COMPREHENSION that earned you the JUNK?

I REFUSE to make time for the dishonest or the ILLITERATE, both attributes which do not garner respect but are to be reviled as DISGUSTING. I have better activities which are more profitable than to deal with the unworthy.

And when you retort that I am to be patient...well...I am already DAMNED TO HELLFIRE.

But there is a Living God in which there is Life.

Conversely and unfortunately SATAN is also quite alive and real and I am destined for the Second Death.

For many are called but few are chosen. The path to destruction is wide while the path to salvation is narrow and there are very few that find it.

I am not one of those chosen few. But I will still proclaim God's Truth in the hopes that others may avoid my fate.

You may still have a chance but I seriously doubt it.

The problem isn't with the intent of the various faiths, but in the implementation. They never live up to their own ideals. Jesus put it well in Matthew 23. He's a bit long-winded, as usual, but He basically says "You jackasses know all the words and rituals, but you miss the whole damned point!"

He had a lot to say about those who "miss the point" in favor of blind adherence to a complex law code. But it's true of ALL faiths, they begin around a set of noble ideals, but quickly become little man-made constructs that the priestly classes use to enrich themselves, and enslave others.

It's how one LIVES the faith that shows whether they have gotten the point.

Btw, I'm not religious at all, but I am very spiritual...:-)

FIRST PRINCIPLES:  In any "Financial" transaction, there is a Buyer, a Seller, and a Product.  Since this is a Financial transaction, the  Buyer is obviously the one who pays the money.

Since you don't pay any money to CNBC you are not the Buyer.  The Buyers are the Corporate Advertisers, and their needs are number one, not yours.

You (or more properly, your eyeballs) are the Product, which is delivered to the Buyer through the Media of TV.

Put otherwise, since you paid Zero to watch CNBC, it cannot be worth more than Zero.  probably less than Zero since there is a risk you might believe anything that gets said on CNBC whether related to Equity levels, impotence, hair loss etc.

What pharmaceuticals often do before trying to pass a new drug is they fabricate concern over an invented symptom - something that was not considered a disease previously. They plant articles in magazines. Then when the time comes, they tap the pages, to illustrate the need for intervention.

CNBC exists so that there is an official public record of lies and propaganda. Occasionally a time comes when a crook (Rumsfeld, Powell or Paulson etc.) has to defend himself. He goes in front of a bought and paid for judge, speaks in front of a bought and paid for jury, he claims that he acts in accordance to legitimate intel, then points to his own fabricated evidence planted in mainstream media, and walks off the stage handcuff-free. Then he goes down in history like Bernanke - "A Hero!"

In old days you could bribe a cardinal and be washed of your sins. These days the sociopaths employ legal institutions and media to do the same job. They just want to have a clean record in case eternal hell awaits them on the other side.

It doesn't matter if any actual person watches the channel. It's there almost exclusively for people who manufacture its content. All the views might as well be done by phantom Facebook users. It doesn't matter one bit. That's now what the channel is for.

It's a public record reposidory for thieves and murderers.

In the age of shamans, austro-libertarian, monetarist or neo-Keyesian, who cares about reality?

Back testing in the ephemeral age of instant drowning in statistics, and short term BTFD plays conducted via HFT algos, is beyond rational feed back analysis. It is totally in a world of make belief.

And the monopoly players know that. Make, bend and repackage the rules until you close your hold tight and all the sheeple have lost their heads in the cloud of "what you see is not what you'll get but what you'll hope to get".

But in the meantime spin the tale that wags the devil's tail !

As you are in the game just for ONE thing : PROFIT (ah, to hold the devil by his tail and get him to point to the erstwhile pot of gold, what a screamy dream of Faust.) Carl Icahn is running with his 2 billion from Netflix to make his point!

The rest is beyond shamanism, its consequences, and you don't wanna go there until IT IS THERE!
