Greek Suicide Rate Surges 35% In 2 Years

Tyler Durden's picture

In a disturbing new report confirming "The impact of economic austerity and prosperity events on suicide in Greece," tough financial austerity measures in Greece have led to a 35% jump in suicide rates in a little less than 2 years.

As KeepTalkingGreece reports, George Rachiotis notes this surge in suicides (especially among men) mirrors a very similar increase in suicide rates from 1989-1994 in Russian men when the so-called “shock therapy” programs were being implemented.

Correlation is not causation, but... (please note when we use the word "austerity" we mean in the "we can't spend seriously crazy amounts of money even if we don't have it" way... which, translated, means "living within your means - no longer funded by insurmountable debt.")

Source: BMJOpen.com

Findings from Dr Rachiotis’ study are alarming enough, but they have been corroborated by a number of other studies, including a study by Charles C. Branas, MD, and colleagues that was published February 2, 2015, in BMJ Open.

Having tracked the suicide rate in Greece for more than 30 years, Dr Branas and coworkers found that the highest monthly rates of suicide in Greece occurred in 2012.

“The passage of new austerity measures in June 2011 marked the beginning of significant, abrupt and sustained increases in total suicides (+35.7%) and male suicides (+18.5%),” the investigators write.

Suicides among men in Greece also underwent a significant, abrupt, and sustained increase in October 2008, when the Greek recession began along with an abrupt albeit temporary increase in suicides in April 2012, when a pharmacist publicly shot himself to protest the austerity measures.

The report's conclusion is ominous in light of today's negotiations...

Our analysis points to a significant increase in suicides following austerity-related events in Greece.

As future austerity measures are considered, greater weight should be given to the unintended mental health consequences of these measures.

Greece's solution is pretty simple.

(1) Admit they can't be in a currency untion with countries, like say Germany, that have very different economies.

(2) Shank the creditors.  Almost all of Greece's debt is now owned by the ECB and IMF.  They were dumb enough to take on a bad debt, screw them.  Maybe you offer them 10 cents on the dollar, after negotiating for 4 or 5 years.

(3) Enact the reforms the IMF/EU wanted after defaulting on the debt, that would be the ultimate F-U.

(4) Get your house in order, live within your means, and in 5 years you can go back to the credit markets in a strong position.

Thu, 06/25/2015 - 14:40 | 6234541 Really20
Really20's picture

They shouldn't go back to the credit markets. They should issue their own currency debt-free rather than privatizing it to the banker-vultures. This currency should have a 1:1 fixed exchange rate with the Euro, and while the economy stabilizes currency controls should be implemented in order to ensure that deflation and capital flight does not continue. Soon enough, they should be on a much more solid footing.

4-5 years of Zimbabwe like hell, THEN, sell all their assets, that will make the EU suggested austerity look like a GIFT.

NO risk of contagion after the weak links see what Greece goes thru ALONE.

Even if Greece succumbs to Russia, do you think Spain or France would want that ?

What Greece owes is the equivalent to change lost in the EU sofa cushions compared to continuing the bailout.

Dear God I am so sorry.

A few years ago my brother and I got together and talked about overcoming all the sadness and horror we had as kids. He admitted to me he tried to shoot himself but in the last minute, moved and shot into the ceiling. He made up his mind to do it again, right, the next day. When he went to do it, he couldn't find the gun and was so thankful today because it would have been the worse mistake of his life.

I told him I had a terrible dream he might do such a thing and coerced a friend at college to give me a ride home. At 2AM I got into our appartment and took the gun and gave it to my friend. I never knew anything of this was happening 30 years ago.

We melted into each other's arms and just cried.

I don't know your circumstances or your brother's but please believe me I know despair and hopelessness very well and have contemplated suicide myself. I hope you can find some resolution in this and have others to confide if you need to. I went it alone for most of my life and that was difficult.

Your will be in my thoughts and prayers,

Miffed

So sad.

This is what happens when people put thier faith in money and governments, instead of God.

The Wise and Foolish Builders:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” - Matthew 7:24-27

I usuually try and relax as best as I can.

Sure, religion can be like a bit of lidocaine rubbed on your backside, but it don't stop the fucking.

The Mother of a friend of mine was a German war bride (married a US GI).

She and her loved ones went though some very tough times.

I've heard stories of just how extreme hunger can get.

Tales of endurance through extreme difficulty.

But the power of faith, hope and love can endure any test.

If you're still breathing,

Why, oh why, take your own life?

Because they feel it's hopeless.

They don't feel loved.

They haven't put their faith in what endures.

But it's never hopeless, until you take that last breath.

Then, it may, indeed be hopeless,

Unless you've put faith in Jesus Christ as your personal savior.

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." - 1 Corinthians 13:13

Isn't it a bit hypocritical to blame Merkel for the Greeks getting themselves in a sh!thole of debt?  People need to man up and take responsible for their own problems.

I do agree that people need to man up and take personal responsibility for their debts.

But when you induce others into a fraud to begin with then it does not exonerate you from the fraud which you are...

When are the Germans going to man up and take responsibility for perpetrating the fraud?

Loaning anyone or any entity capital WITHOUT doing the due dilligence of determining if they actually have the ability to repay that which is borrowed is a FRAUD.

And if a corporation or Government is seeking to use debt to enslave a population then that is as immoral as taking the loan.

There is an old adage which states that you cannot fraud an honest man. That is as true today when it was first uttered.

And you, personally, demonstrating YOUR SUPPORT for the Fraud of the Banks, are also just as Fraudulent as you are COMPLICIT after the fact.

When are YOU going to man up and take responsibility for YOUR FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES?

I am not holding my breath.

I will rejoice on the day that YOUR ENTIRE FRAUDULENT AND CORRUPT SYSTEM BURNS DOWN, HOPEFULLY IN A NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST.

And you can be assured that I will do my best to help bring that to fruition.

I read on a popular blog: "You know you're a 90s kid when you have no good source of income and want to die."

People are so much brainwashed in the West that they are in the state of human livestock. They can't tell what is fake; they can't figure out what the true aims of their lives are; they can't even discover what the real pleasures of their lives offer.  They are dumb fucks and they deserve what they've got. The situation is even worse for those self-acclaimed middle-class farm animals.  Fuck them. The continental thinkers of 60s are absolutely right: what we are witnessing is the end/disappearance of man.

Tyranny is not a monolith, but a system. A system can be broken at many points. The more vast a system, the exponentially greater the points by which that system may be broken. Those points are vulnerabilities in tyranny's system, and opportunities for Liberty to take up.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

And a shout out to the NSA, CIA, and FBI: Like someone watching and listening from under a window to the love making of strangers, it is the watcher and the listener that is the criminal.

Thanks.

While I own an arsenal, and expect to be called on one day to utilize it, I believe that my greatest skill is "disassembling" tyranny, and then conveying the what, who, and where of them. Does NOT mean that I am good at it, but believe that I am, and am trying to become better. Writing here sure has made a difference, not that many care what I have to say, but the payoff comes in the face-to-faces with the sheeple.

Regardless, my fall back, when the time comes, is the taking up of arms with my fellow Americans against the tyranny occupying the American country, and oppressing the American people.

See you on the battlefield, or listen for the tapping out of my sign-of-life, "YYZ," from deep in one of Zion's basement cells in some far corner of the empire.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

I'll be going going away, mostly, for a while so as to get caught up in my surveys (research). Got three on tap: WW-I (Currently, I know the beginning, the end, and only a few things in between.), European history (Too much disjointed knowledge of.), and war, insurgency, and counterinsurgency (Starting with Boyd). Looking forward to it, as I haven't done a hardcore survey in a while, well, except learning Python in the past year. And I get to spend a lot of time in cafes, and what not, reading and thinking. Cheers.

Mad old Greece, walking the footsteps of her daughter Medea, is cheerfully slicing open her children's throats and tossing them into the grave she's dug for them, and, when she's done, will turn the knife on herself. Anybody who thinks he can stop her is a fool.

If anybody's reading this in Greece, don't wait for your turn to come around. Run. Now. Don't look back.
