Tsipras Calls For Referendum In Televised Address

Tyler Durden's picture

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras has announced a referendum in a televised speech to the nation after another day of fractious negotiations with creditors closed without a deal.

The dramatic move comes after Athens rejected a proposal from the troika aimed at delivering some €16 billion in aid to Greece as part of an extension of the country's second bailout program. From Kathimerini:

The government is considering a referendum on the substance of the agreement, according to recent reports, during the enlarged meeting taking place from Friday night at the Maximos Mansion. The referendum is expected to be held next Sunday, while the prime minister has already informed the political leaders. The prime minister after returning from Brussels convened the extraordinary Governing Council at the Maximos Mansion, which after 23:00 turned into cabinet by attendance of ministers and party executives to discuss the latest developments and next steps in view of tomorrow's Eurogroup.

EU finance ministers will convene in Brussels tomorrow and it appears as though Tsipras is set to turn the tables by threatening to effectively put euro membership to a popular vote.

Referendum? If Papandreou, a few years ago at the beginning of the Greek Debt crisis, did the same thing, everybody in Europe would’ve been better off by now, i.e. there would’ve been NO MORE EURO. Coulda, woulda, shoulda… ;-)

Attaboy, Tsipras! Attaboy!

Yes Obama would win 58-42 because the Free Shit Army would prefer to string it out for at least another 18 months to get the new tent ready.

The guy's been called a few things by some on Z/H but has done the right thing rather than stay in the job , collect a salary ( and a few brown bags ) and hide in the mansion, towing the Troika/Gestapo Line.

The hubris of the Neocons in thinking they'll get a Stay In and then put in their own Jerk without turning Greece into a burning cauldron is laughable.

Either way PLAN B with Russia and China is a soft-landing.

I have heard of referendums where one had to vote Yes for No, and No for Yes.

Most people who were against the referendum and instinctively voted no, and unfortunately did not read, or comprehend what was going on, were shocked by the result.

"My fellow Greeks!

We, the cradle of Democracy have been presented with an odious proposal and it is time to take a stand!

For years, we have borrowed money at favorable rates AND used this money to build infrastucture, fill our Government, YOUR government buildining with many fellow Greeks and paid them well and promised them - and by them I mean YOU generous pensions, benefits and the like.    We also used the money to line our own pockets - and by that I mean NOT YOUR pockets, but it should feel like your pockets, since WE are YOUR government.

Today, the disgusting Germans and their Arian Northern Brothers want us to PAY THEM BACK.   Can you believe it!    How can we?  How could we?   We spent it all on YOU and on US - but by US I mean YOU too.

Remember, the idiotic Banks -- you know, the BANKSTERS, THEY were stupid enough to buy our debt.   They Kept loaning us more.    Did they not know that we are Greeks - the cradle of Democracy?   Did they not know that we are compulsive spenders and have NEVER paid our debts?   Did they not see that we were spending thier money without any sense of responsibility?

And NOW, they want to Humiliate us!   They want us to pay back what we borrowed!

Well, F*ck them!    We are Greeks, we are Democracy, we are Solidarity!.    We want more money, to continue to pay our bloated pensions, to pad our government offices with more usless staff, to pay our young people to get multiple degrees and stay in school till the reach 55 and then retire.

I tell you, it is OUR RIGHT, as Greeks to have all our loans forgiven AND to receive more money from those Arian bastards AND to continue to live our lives - with DIGNITY.   For only as Debtors who will never pay what we borrow from others, can we truely be a FREE and PROUD people and part of Europe - that owes us everything - WITHOUT QUESTION

THank you

Ah yes, the old "The Devil Made Me Do It" rational

I'll bet you that you think you are a person of Principle.   So, if I were to ask you would you borrow money that you knew you could not pay back IF IT would have terrible consequences for your family, how would you answer?

If I gave you great terms to borrow money to buy weapons to murder _____ (fill in the blank) would you do it?    Would you willingly put your family in harms way because the financing was great?

Would you add massive additions on your house, purchase equipment you didn't need for your business because I have a teaser rate?

But government employees are patsies, eh?    Those fucking snales in the grass that got to where they are by being more ruthless and unethical than the other guy - they are little lambs led to slaughter because of low interest rates, etc...

My eyes are open -- yours should be too.    Both parties are doing a dance - and it has nothing to do with us -- but everything to do with doing it to us

...and the reason why Greece must and will stay in the EU, is that even with the looming defaults, the EU will be required to bail-out the banks courtesy of Euro devaluation...so the parasites need memeber countries to be part of that process.  If Greece leaves, then they won't be responsible for bailing out the banks.  That can't be allowed.

TPP and the like are voted on until passed.  No never means no; it only means that the voting will continue until the result taht the Oligarchy/corporations have already demanded and position to implement and profit from..

I used the term "economic genocide' to describe the tactics the Troika is using against Greece in a previous post and I aslo said that Merckel should shut up, before she gets German re-tarred with this brush. The deal that the Troika is offering Greece is simply using finance as warfare.  The Greeks have nothig to loose, they have been blackmailed, threatened and insulted. Greece should adopt a scorched earth policy and simply aim to take the EU down the drian.
