I'm a single dad. Last week, I took my daughter to the local (northern Arkansas) community swimming pool. There was a single mom there who not only was not obese, but had a great body - a real head-turner. She was enjoying playing with her kids, smiled a lot, apparently had good mothering instincts, and seemed to genuinely enjoy being a mom. The South wasn't right, but I do have many southern friends with whom I have a lot in common despite the fact that my ancestors fought honorably for the Union (and the Continent, as well).

I would suggest looking at the rhetoric of southern leaders on the eve of the Civil War before you claim that secession was primarily about states rights.
Also, if the South was such a champion of federalism, how do you explain the Fugitive Slave Act?
The argument that the Civil War was not about slavery because most of the Confederate soldiers didn't own slaves holds very little water for two reasons:
1. There was a fear of the idea of free blacks on the part of poor whites in the south, at least partly because free blacks would clearly compete with the whites for jobs.
2. Just because the little guy doesn't benefit from the system (in this case, the South's slavery-based economic system) doesn't mean that he is never used as a pawn in order to uphold the system.
There are several wrong things in this discussion.
First, it was not a "Civil War." It was a Secession War, which is the precise polar opposite of a Civil War.
Yes, slavery was on the minds of many Southern Leaders. There were also abolitionists in the South. I'd qoute R.E. Lee on the subject, but other commenters have already covered that on related threads. It is also true that there were tens of thousands of Confederate blacks - some slaves, some free - who fought to defend the South against Mr. Lincoln's murdering marauding invaders. They knew that they (and especially their women) would suffer far worse a fate than Southern Whites at the hands of those raping, looting, and burning bastards in the Northern Armies. Regardless, to say that slavery wasn't an issue at all in the minds of Southern secessionists is an error.
But it is also an error to say that the Yanks liked blacks. The Emancipation Propagandaclamation only applied to the seceded Southern States, and excluded Northern slave-owning States from emancipation. What does that tell you? They didn't want the blacks moving north.
The real reason for secession, the straw that broke the camel's back, was the tariff. This was a Yankee invention that would have devastated Southern agri-business while enriching New Englanders. (Sound familiar?) The South seceded over the tariff; the North invaded and attacked us over slavery.
By the year 1900, advances in agricultural implements had made slavery practically obsolete anyway. So the argument that we needed Mr. Lincoln's War to "end slavery," or that slavery would still exist today if those noble Yanks hadn't subjugated us evil rebels is a complete fabrication.
Lets look at this from the Yankee perspective.

The NORTH wasn't 'right', either. Federalism is what they stood for, NOT 'State's Rights' as enumerated in the Constitution. By the way, PLENTY of slaveholders lived in the NORTH.
ACTUALLY, if you do your due diligence research, the South was far more in line with the Constitution than the North was.
T'was the BANKSTERS that decided that the Union should be DIVIDED in order to end the threat of the rise of a FREE PEOPLE (who still happened to have slaves, on both sides of the line).
The burning of Atlanta was 'honorable'? HMMM. 'Carpetbaggers' were HONORABLE? The 'Act' of 1871 was 'HONORABLE'?
The Russian tzar agreed to park his fleet of ships off of both coasts, because HE saw that the BANKER CABAL was looking to see the Union weakened, and was plotting to invade and re-conquor. 52 years or so later, the BANKERS plotted the overthrow of the Russians, and killed the tzar (it was a son of the former one) and his WHOLE FAMILY, in retribution. TRUE EVIL NEVER SLEEPS (until it dies). BY THE WAY, the Russian monarchy actually favored the SOUTH at the time.

The south supported government centralization on many levels, and southern leaders were happy to violate federalist principles as well as liberty when it served their aims.
Examples:
-The Fugitive Slave Act, pushed through Congress by southern Senators in 1850, forced local police forces in the north to return so-called property (i.e. runaway slaves) to the south even though the northern states did not recognize them as property. If the South really cared about states' rights, they never would have supported the Fugitive Slave Act.
-The Dred Scott Case: The Taney Court ruled that Scott had no grounds to sue because he was not a person; he was property. This was clearly at odds with the principle of liberty, upon which the US justified its separation from Britain in the Declaration of Independence.
-The political makeup of both houses of Congress and the executive had favored the slaveholding states, even though the northern states were more populous. The Senate obviously puts the rights of states over the rights of citizens with its two-votes per state design. But, the 3/5ths compromise in the House of Reps. also gave the southern states an advantage in represenation, as they received a higher proportion of congressional reps. than they otherwise would have and the slaves were not allowed any political participation, which in effect meant that voting southerners always had more leverage even in the H.R. than voting northerners. The design of the Senate as well as the 3/5ths compromise gave southern voters 30% more voting power, in terms of the electoral college, than northern voters.
The claim that the Southern states seceeded because they were standing up to an oppressive central government is not supported by the historical evidence wrong. The South seceeded when Lincoln won the election on the platform of halting the spread of slavery into the Western territories.
It was only after the Civil War, once slavery had been abolished and it was clear that it was not coming back, that southern leaders developed the claim that the war was about states rights. The war was primarily about the southern fear that Lincoln's policies would eventually lead to the abolition of slavery. We will never know if they were right or not, as secession changed the course of history and most certainly accelerated the abolition of slavery.
In any case, the claim that the Civil War was primarily about states' rights, and not about slavery, is not supported by the evidence, since the Southern states were quick to use federal power whenever it served their interest and because the South had a disproportionately large voice in the national government, thanks to the design of the Senate, the 3/5ths Compromise, and the advantage that these conferred in terms of more electoral votes for Southern states.

Not being an American, I couldn't really care less about the confederate flag except for my fondness for the "Dukes of Hazard" and Daisy from my youth. BUT I did learn something very interesting and important because of this debacle about history and how it can be usurped by the mainstream to place lies and false narratives into the public consciousness.

It's not all cut and dry as the media would portray that period. It's way more complicated than just the 'slavery' aspect of the Civil War.
Growing up in rural Alabama in the early 90s, I remember as a kid seeing an elegantly-framed picture of Nathan Bedford Forrest hanging on the wall out in the hallway of our little elementary school, with the story underneath of his deeds and courage. Forrest Avenue and Forrest Elementary School still bear his name today, along with other places named after Emma Sansom, the brave young girl who showed Gen. Forrest a shallow place to cross the Coosa River when he was chasing after Colonel Streight.
The brainwashing never did really take down here.

That's about an hour from here, on the backroads highways. Very pleasant drive through some beautiful country.
I worked out my family tree a long ways back on all branches, and there were many Confederate veterans of multiple states, including one Union soldier in a house full of Confederates, who was pissed off about the CSA folks trying to abduct him into duty and so joined the Union instead. He regretted it for the rest of his days. His brothers drew full state pensions; he suffered from various medical ailments and died with no Federal pension granted for himself or his widow.
I happen to know of an unmarked graveyard in this area that contains some of the most prominent names around here, from when these valleys were first settled by white folks. There's at least 50-60 graves in there, many of them with no names, just a stone. The fanciest headstones belong to Jeremiah Walker and kin, who "sent seven sons to the Confederacy." Two or three of them didn't make it back. They were in a regiment of sharpshooters. Like most folks around there, none of them were slaveowners.
One of those Walkers has a Woodsmen of the World gravestone, in a very elaborate design I haven't seen duplicated in the many internet pictures of other WW stones. This graveyard is totally grown up and unmaintained, with cows having roamed through it on occasion and knocked over some of the stones. Tried to buy the land last year but some other asshole bought it right out from under me. One of these days I'm going to get my hands on that property and restore that graveyard. It's in a beautiful spot right on top of a hill with huge trees all around, looking out over the valley.

this is a very sophisticated attack on free speech caused by free speech. it is your right to say anything about the confederate flag to the point of banning it from your store shelves. when most things of all kinds are sold by very few retailers, it is easy to ban some thoughts. criticizing isarael and any aspect of the official holocaust story or 9/11 or anything else that needs or has an official story will soon be illegal because of the harm caused by the questions.
