A couple I know were 'anti-war protestors', during the early Bush years. Then they figured out what the real angle was, and who was behind the 'movement'. They're both big time conspiracy types, now, when we meet up there's always a great converstion to be had. They're smart people who realized that most of the people they'd surrounded themselves with in the movement were completely clueless as to what it really was all about.
They claim the 'anti-war' movement of the early Bush years was merely an anti-Republican movement, and there's no doubt in their minds that Soros and others were providing the funding for most of the events.
Yeah it was an anti red team movement. The anti blue team movement became a faction of the Tea Party.

You know, I get tired of this revisionist history. The "hippies", TRUE hippies were a very small counter culture phenomenon. However, their outlook had a certain appeal for a cross section of youth in society, again a minority. At the same time you had the ROTC and the jocks who pretty much ran the college show and went on to ruin the country. These people hated the hippies and their philosophy, and it all came to a head when the ROTC and the National Guard began killing protesters at Kent State. It was then that "hippies" relized their worst fears. They found out that what they believed about their government was true, and for the most part, shrank into the woodwork. Very few, if any, became politicians, and very few if any became corporate elites.
So, it is very easy and lazy to paint a whole generation with one brush. You do a diservice to yourself and the people here by doing so. True hippies are more likely to be involved locally rather than nationally, and are insulted by your insinuation that they are responsible for what America has become today. On the contrary, we tried to tell your parents what was happening, but like you, they had taken the blue pill and became part of the matrix, and became slaves to the system.

Thank you for this correct observation. In reality, there were few real hippies, and never clear universal definition of hippie. In the 60's, we had a volitiile mix of sub cultures coming together to fight for personal liberty, and fueled by an intoxicating mix of sex, drugs, & rock & roll. There was the "tune in, turn on, drop out'" faction commonly known as hippies, but then there were other highly involved movements pushing civil rights, anti war, the feminism whose followers were often labeled hippies. In fact, in the South, anyone with facial hair was considered a hippie.
