Rent-A-Tent - The Next Silicon Valley Startup
Submitted by Daniel Drew via Dark-Bid.com,
In the modern economy, we share everything: STDs, food stamps, transportation, and housing. It's all facilitated by mobile technology. First there was Rent A Gent. Now, the next part of the sharing economy is upon us: Rent A Tent.
Thanks to rampant NIMBY policies in the San Francisco Bay area, the housing market is rigged and stuck in a perpetual shortage. Hotel prices are higher than in New York and London. AirBnB rentals are hard to find, as the tech crowd is not keen on outsiders interfering with their NIMBY American dream.
One man decided he wanted to monetize a tent in his Mountain View backyard - for $900 per month. About 25 people have expressed interest, with some asking to stay a month or longer.

More than 50 other tents have appeared on AirBnB in California.
In the 1930s, this sort of activity also took place - except they didn't have exciting names for it like Rent A Tent or "the sharing economy." They called them Hoovervilles, named after President Herbert Hoover.

Actually, these Hooverville structures look much more solid than the Silicon Valley tent, and they didn't cost $900. Being homeless is getting expensive.

Hercule Poirot.
Once the bubble bursts, those startup workers are going to feel really silly with all that work and nothing to show for it.
I wonder how many will commit suicide.
"Somewhere between none and all of them."

This whole notion of rent is completely absurd in todays free FED debt/money push. It's absurd.
Anyone should be able to get a 20 year mortgage on a good tent like this and build some equity!!
Transtents.com so you can be PC!
I could never put together the down payment on a spread like that.
Anything else is anti-Semitism. Oh the humanity!
It's the SHARING eCONomy, stupid!
Where you have to share because you can't afford to own. TM (CaliPornia Tech Cartel).
Next up: an exciting new sustainable food product called "Soylent Green"!
An entrepreneur can use this idea for early release for Federal prisoners temporary housing. Then call the new start-up company "ConTent"!
FIXED.
Cheetos.
My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do... http://bit.ly/1LCjofJ
there is only one way all this can conclude - and it'll be unimmagiably ugly.
Uglier than Hillary Clinton pegging Barney Frank while Nanci Pelosi tongue punches her fartbox you think.........??
No, but pretty close.
I negged you for horrific imagery!
Time for the brain bleach.
900$ per month to rent a tent that costs 100$ used on Craigs list.
The $900 is for the land area, not the tent. If you bring your own tent its still gonna be $900.
I wonder if they accept EBT card?
And just like with housing, you can onw as many tents as you like, but not the land they stand on.
Does that include TOA (Tent Owner Association) fees?
In Silicon Valley, there are also probably strong rules about maximum tent height, etc.
It's actually a tent that costs new $49 on target.
put a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet seat on top and charge an extra 10 bucks, call it a suite.
Put in WiFi access and one of those crappy 1-cup coffee makers and call it an apartment.
I see in the picture that it comes with free-range game for the first night's dinner, as an added bonus.
Hey! If you're paying for it, it better be fancy...

Oh hey, and since we're in Silicon Valley, we better throw in a coffee maker too!

There's one thing that needs to be taken care of first in order to rid ourselves of these woes. STOP THESE WARS! >>

Saw this coming years ago and bought up property under overpasses and bridges.
I charge extra for the space under the bridges. Close to the water means better sanitation, which means a higher quality of life. The tenants don't mind too much, their biggest complaints come when it rains suicided banksters.
Next I think I'll invest in pointy steel umbrellas and sell them to the tent folk as insurance.
"And we'll call it your tax base."
Good luck using your "tent City" as collateral...
$900 a month rent for a tent and Yellen says there is no inflation in America - just 0.8% in 2014 per official statistics.
Just look at how we fix inflation in the land of the free:
Chapwood Index shows real inflation in US.
In 2014, it was 9.7% - 1212% of official US inflation (0.8%)
http://www.chapwoodindex.com/
The Chapwood Index reflects the true cost-of-living increase in America. Updated and released twice a year, it reports the unadjusted actual cost and price fluctuation of the top 500 items on which Americans spend their after-tax dollars in the 50 largest cities in the nation.

"$900 a month rent for a tent and Yellen says there is no inflation in America - just 0.8% in 2014 per official statistics. "
$900 a month rent for a single occupancy is a bargain in most major US cities.
The fact that the rental is a tent in stead of a room in a building is merely a matter of hedonic adjustment.
I wonder is if renting a tent as a dwelling is a breach of housing codes or other wise illegal. Some of the people renting these tents might find the local housing authority kicking their 'tenant' out and the 'tenant' suing for breach of contract...
Some renters might just start to get mail delivered to their address and then also have legal rights to occupy the propery proper. 'Improvements' to the property -such as a nice porta potty or a some minor landscaping might also be construable as investment and lead to usurpation of the right to the landspace...
Getting rid of a renter that refuses to pay might be a problem, too. Locking someone out of a house is one thing; but, trying to keep someone out of your yard while you are away at work is quite another...
Who needs a PO Box anymore?
Do they make tents ten stories tall yet?
It probably should be pointed out that many Native Americans lived in Teepees -which are a form of tent.
Many people in the ME lived in tents well into the early 20th century...some probably still do.
Everybody does not need a McMansion with a manicured lawn and a garage full of junk...
Fuck, school year is over: tens of thousands of American Families are going to pay to have their kids housed in tents for weeks at a time as some kind of vacation away from suburbia starting next weekend...
Get down with your existential self.
It's good to see some teat suckling millennials following the boomer footsteps.
Free market rules!!! Stand back and watch the segregation continue.
Sometimes I just get wound up about it. Fuck you money changers!
Who's supplying the water and portable potty services?
The next door neighbors have a swimming pool........
Too funny. Thanks for the laugher. Clorine bleach will be banned next. Green swimming pools are the norm.
My tenant in Ft Myers just called two days ago. The pool pump took a shit. Getting replaced tomorrow. Dump clorine into pool to shock water. PH level returns.
;)
Algae is a wanted by product....
It's good for the complexion and eats CO2

I want to go on record as the guy who invented the term Obamaville™
Came up with it the 1st time I saw tent city in San Jose a few yrs back; seems even more appropriate now.
my next business venture: Obamaville™ Tent Rentals, LLC.
Okay. After that you can branch out into Obamaville Latrine Rentals.
Suggested motto: "Take your dump on the chump". and put a picture of Obama at the bottom of the hole.
Too late
http://unsavoryagents.com/projects/obama-toilet-seat
"I swear taking a dump after installing this toilet seat is like a ride at Magic Mountain EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! I don't even flush my toilet anymore, which is great for the environment because that saves water!"
I just need to make a rent a tent app. It should be worth at least 10 billion.
Like the article said: "Air BnB."
You can buy a house for taxes where I am from.
That would be around five thousand bucks give or take a hundred.
Or..."you can live the dream...
Is there a discount for BYOT? (bring your own tent, cardboard box ect...)
Most of the land in the US West is leased actually.
"Just paying rent to be homeless." Not good if you're trying to be a Bank out that way. "Tent Cities" are poor collateral and don't make for a very good tax base either.
Stockton has in fact gone bankrupt so finding a house to live in there shouldn't be a problem...
Knock 30% off for cleaning up the dogshit in the backyard and ya gotta deal ;-)
lol Too bad the renter didn't realize the dog was of the Equine species.
Solyndra Manufacturing Plant (PLN2009-00017) - City of Fremont
Those owl nesting bastards needed free federal government passage to migrate.
Fly a confederate flag, and the neighbors will pay you $3,000 to move.
Winning.
Now theres an idea...lol.
Let the terms, conditions & covenants of tent rental begin ;-)
Hell, I've got an old unregistered '78 Chevy Malibu 4-door out behind the barn I'll rent for only $850 a month. Back seat is real comfy and the windows roll up if it rains.
I shit you not, in the height of the Bakken frenzy when any newcomer had a fat chance in hell of getting a rental, people were renting out cars, vans, school buses etc. The Walmart was full and a tent city had sprung up in a park. There were also many that lived in their own cars. Negative thirty temps put the kibash on that but not before people died.
I was looking for Robert Kiosaki out there but I never saw him.

Uber Tent .... Uber Ford .... Uber Wife !
yew!! drive some elses Ford?
Jackie Stewart said that Fords are better than Hondas, Toyotas, or Nissans. He's an expert, you know.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Oc6s-9FToA
NOW, if you'd like to buy a nice used (or, 'well-used') Pinto, I have one. It comes WITH a tent (conveniently stored in the back, right above the exploding gas tank).
EEW! Drive ANY Ford?
Effing Ridiculous
As all "sharing" eCONomy concepts are...
I'm sure the company will do a billion dollar ipo. Then investment firms will invest with their 0% cheap money from the Fed. We live in economic fantasy land right now !!
On the bright side the 1/3 full, buy one get one free deodorants are "on sale" at Wally World. They also have a new layaway plan for Mach 3 razors.
"No, there's no inflation you fearmongerer."
FEMA tent death camp Beta? or is it alpha?
does that come with your own biffy?
Can I rent tents on my lawn? I'm sure that that HOA would have a fit, but so what? I could give them month to month rental agreements and kick them out before sanctioned.

KIA is offering free three months and zero interest payment depending on FICO score.

There's a lot of wry, humorous, sarcastic comments that I appreciated, but to me this article exemplifies what is so wrong with the world and resonates so strongly with the part of me that deals with anger, pity, sadness and hopelessness of the human condition.
$900/month for a tent on somebody's patio. Every personal tragedy, every fallen middle class family becomes an opportunity for somebody else to exploit them, to squeeze a little more humiliation and dignity from those who have next to nothing. Greed has no shame and this isn't my fucking idea of capitalism.
This is the fruitage of greed.
The judgment of the greedy was foretold long ago:
"Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter." - James 5:1-5
-Jean Baudrillard
how many homeless are you letting live for free at your place?
Zero. The same number as how many homeless I'm exploiting and humiliating.
Why pay to rent a tent in the Bay Area? There are so many fucking homeless people you trip over them on the sidewalk in San Francisco. Just do what everybody else does... Set up camp for free in the local park or live out of your smelly van down by the beach. Seriously, it's a legit way of life in California and not frowned upon at all. I've never seen so much vagrancy in my entire life.
The upcoming 'Most shared item of all time'. Bullets. (Pointy end first).
there's much cheaper options because There are lots of Tent Cities in AmerKa.
Here is an image of Camp Purgatory, and notice how they proudly display their beloved AmeriCon Flag:

The Flag is Upside down - distress signal
To the wife- what a bunch of filthy animals
To the mistress- but it's clean, and close to all your favorite stores
To the Tinder hook-up- are we cool, then? it's a buddy's man-cave
That's cheaper, and includes the tent, than just a tent pitch on a site in Spain in 2009 (the last time I went to Spain touring on my motorbike, the average was 32 euros a night, and it's why I haven't been back).
if a paying guest falls down can they sue the proprty owner?
Last night I overheard a conversation that was disturbing: Terrorism has done to Islam what Wall St. Jews have don Judiasm. In world history, Jews always seem to be at a flash point where ecomic strife seems to surface. They are with statistical consistancy, always have there hand where they win and everyone else loses. If Jews want to stop anti semitism, stop them. The conversation took place between to white males that attend Stanford University. Not two meth heads incarcerated. I was shocked to hear this view from both parties. Maybe they are correct?
as a jew, i entirely agree with them
when the pitch forks come, they will come for me and my family ..but the ilk of Carl Icahn, David Teppner, Bill Ackman and Dan Loeb will get to fuck off to where-ever just like the elites did in Germany
Well this was entirely predictable and is the main reason why businesses will say they need more H1Bs who would love to live 4-5 ina one bedroom apartment.
This will not stop until US wages are standard of living is on par with the lowest of the third world countries
