Kids to Michelle Obama: Here’s Where you can Stick your School Lunch Rules

Politicians have always labored under the entirely mistaken impression that one can keep people from doing what they actually want to do, or that markets can be suppressed by outlawing them. The greatest monument to this folly is the utter failure known as the “war on drugs”. Even those who believe in the notion that the government should look after the “Volksgesundheit”, or, as is far more likely in the case of drug prohibition, should enforce Puritanical morals on people against their will (while ensuring the profitability of officially sanctioned drug pushers in the form of the pharmaceutical industry on the side), must admit by now that the effort has been a spectacular and costly fiasco.

After Germany’s reunification, old medical records and statistics were rediscovered in the former GDR, which allowed researchers to complete the historical record back to 1871, when Germany was first unified. Upon studying these statistics, they inter alia found out that use of the drugs considered most dangerous – assorted derivatives of opium – has been precisely as prevalent among the population after prohibition as it was before it. In other words, the health benefit of prohibition was precisely zero. So who is benefiting? Apart from the already mentioned pill-pushers, this cartoon seems to cover it:

It turns out that kids don’t like to be told how their food should be prepared either. In fact, they absolutely hate it. Congress just received an update on the “unintended consequences” of Michelle Obama’s school lunch rules. Apparently the stuff she wanted to push on children just tastes really crappy and now a black market in salt, pepper and sugar has developed:

“Children are creating their own black markets to trade and sell salt due to First Lady Michelle Obama’s school lunch rules.

During a hearing before the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, chaired by Rep. Todd Rokita (R., Ind.), a school administrator told Congress of the “unintended consequences” of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

“Perhaps the most colorful example in my district is that students have been caught bringing–and even selling–salt, pepper, and sugar in school to add taste to perceived bland and tasteless cafeteria food,” said John S. Payne, the president of Blackford County School Board of Trustees in Hartford City, Indiana.

“This ‘contraband’ economy is just one example of many that reinforce the call for flexibility [with the rules],” he said.

Payne noted other problems with the “one-size-fits-all” approach to providing healthier meals to students, including fewer kids participating in the program and higher food waste. The trend started in 2012, when the school lunch law, which was championed by Mrs. Obama, went into effect.

“Students are avoiding cafeteria food,” Payne said. “More students bring their lunch, and a few parents even ‘check out’ their child from campus, taking them to a local fast-food restaurant or home for lunch.” Payne also said school fundraisers like bake sales, have been canceled due to the rules, and “whole-grain items and most of the broccoli end up in the trash” in his district.

Dr. Lynn Harvey agreed that the whole-grain requirement is not working, as kids refuse to eat dense and dry biscuits, and “unpalatable” grits.

“When it comes to whole grain-rich variations of biscuits, grits, crackers and cornbread, all too often, students simply toss them into the trash cans,” said Harvey, who serves as chief of school nutrition services at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, which oversees lunch programs for schools that enroll 1.5 million students.

“This product dissatisfaction has contributed to a decline in breakfast participation in 60 percent of North Carolina’s school districts,” she said.

“Biscuits and corn muffins are part of the state’s cultural and regional food heritage, just as bagels are traditional in the Northeast and tortillas in the Southwest,” Harvey added. “These foods are very popular breakfast items; the addition of whole grain flour has created products that are dense, compact, dry, and crumbly instead of light, moist, tender, and flaky.”

[…]

More than 1 million students fled the lunch line during the first year the standards went into effect.”

(emphasis added)

Kids have even taken to posting pictures of the inedible school fare on Twitter under the hashtag #thanks Michelle Obama. As one kid remarks in no uncertain terms: “We are going to end these sh*tty lunches/prison food!!!!”

what is this

Any guesses what this is? Or may be about to become? – via Twitter

Conclusion

Government cannot force people to conform to its ideas of what is or isn’t healthy and what they therefore may or may not ingest. This has never worked and never will. Attempts to push through such rules always result in the immediate establishment of an underground market – evidently even when the victims of the State’s “caring interventions” are otherwise helpless children.

Here in N. Florida the teachers sell food/candy/snacks out of the classroom. The bands fundraiser is going great guns, the kids don't even have to sell door to door anymore. The students that have lockers are doing a brisk business. Nobody eats cafeteria food anymore.

Yeah I did the same in Jr high back in the 80's...

I'd buy a couple bags of Jolly Ranchers and took them to school in a hollowed out windbreaker.

I learned about opportunity costs in a big way - altered prices etc till I was close to selling out every day.

Had like a 150% markup if I remember correctly and even gave out free candy on occasion.

Got to the point come lunch time I started having a big line. Even had a couple of imitators start.

I got out at that point, figured the school would "make an example" of someone. Sure enough, a few weeks later they punished someone and came down with a "no candy selling" decree.

Was fun while it lasted, kept me in free candy and spending money for a year. Easiest job I ever had - captive market with readily available cash....

;-)

I follow with interest this bad joke that is the menu of school meals in the US. Here in Brazil it is different. We respect the regional tastes. Each state has its menu. Rice, beans and vegetables are the basics. Meat varies from region in the South, Southeast and Midwest, beef or pork (chicken thing is "poor"). North and Northeast fish, lots of fish with manioc flour and dried meat. Sal? Chili? Sugar? The feeding is done according to the standards, but each puts both as there shakers, pepper pots and sugar bowls on the tables. Everything is much simpler and more prosaic effectively, no knives and forks. A bowl and a plastic spoon, it is easier to wash. In Gourds fit 500 grams of food, enough to ease any stomach. You do not see many fat children in elementary and high school. Breakfast consists of: coffee, milk, bread and butter. The evening courses usually have a very consistent soup that varies from state to state, some with manioc juice, others with flour broth, noodles, potatoes, regional meat. There are items rather "special" but, again, it varies from state to state. Turtle eggs in the northern states, fish eggs along the coast, capybara meat, paca etc. inside are items that parents hunt and bring home and take the children to school. I taught in the state of Goiás three and a half, every Wednesday night there was a crumbly (cassava flour with chicken eggs and Tatú meat). Of course that is not part of the menu of school meals, it's a regional thing. Studied nine years in public schools in Brazil, I taught for eleven years in two states, know what I'm talking about. I visited many states giving courses, which tell you is empirical experience. I have a very great shame of not knowing my entire country, it is too big and my salary does not match. I need about three lives (reincarnation) to know it all. Honestly, I'm afraid to tell you how we Brazilians live sound simplicity. I fear that the invasion continues. hehe.

I can't believe keeping shitty school lunches is the new frontier of freedom in America.

In my kids' high school, there was a kid who used to buy a couple boxes of Pop-Tarts every morning at the discount/stale food grocery store near the school.  He'd sell the Pop-Tarts for a couple bucks apiece.  After a while there was a large crowd of kids waiting for the kid to show up each morning, and it blocked up the hall near his locker.  So the school told the kid to stop selling the Pop-Tarts or they'd suspend him.  Now he just sells pot.  Can't keep an entrepreneur down.

As children, my sister and I were both starved and beaten. Our mother suffered from MSBP (Munchaussen by Proxy). Our father was a highlly-trained (but not ell-educated) 'Senior engineer for Swanson Engineering out of Chicago.

Our mother starved us s kids. When my father came home every few weeks, often we could look foward to a pizza. And a beating, after he got drunk. Kind of a mixed-blessing.

Until alcohol got the best of him, he was a professionally-ranked tennis-player. I remember being 6-7 y.o., with him lobbing 100mph serves my way. When they hit, it was rugburn plus the hit.

I survived by growing older and being able to outrun my dad. My sister slit her wrists and splashed her blood on the walls, and went deeper than our parents were willing to do-- hense, foster-care.

Our mother  got into this "healthy stuff" meaning banana-squash and the like, but she didn't know how to cook. When I tried to join the army at 17 I was over 40# underweight and they wouldn't take me.

I put on enough weight to join the USSF at 19 ( My R.O. did lie like a SOB!) And I went from135# to 200# in the blink of an eyel

At my "healthy-weight" I began to see the world much dfferently than I dd before: I began to think what was beyond the immediate.

Yeah, spare no expensse and feed the kids: the better-off that they are, the better-off we all are.

We have a CYFD agent who's job isn't to look for substandard conditions and snatch children, but simply to teach parents how to do things that are required of parents.  Like how to cook a meal.  I hate CYFD, but think about this person's job being teaching parents how to cook and do some general housework, then realize that this particular position is a response to the fact that people don't know how to fucking cook.  She teaches more than just cooking, but holy shit!  I'll let you digest the implications of all of that yourself.

Sat, 06/27/2015 - 12:54 | 6241624 swmnguy

You're completely right.  My wife and I actually do know how to prepare meals from food.  It took us a while to realize how few people do.  We never fed our kids baby food, either; we just mushed up whatever we were eating and fed it to them.  They didn't like everything the first time they tried it, but neither do I always.  Since when do adults let the kids pick their meals?  We'd have ice cream and Doritos for every meal and die of malnutrition.

We spend a couple hundred bucks a week at the grocery.  Every time I go, I see fat, unhealthy-looking people shuffling around with carts mounded with pre-prepared processed "food."  They spend far more than we do per week.  We buy all meats, produce and dry goods; actual food ingredients; and we make our meals from that.  Our kids are teenagers now and eat constantly.  They're also the skinniest kids in their class, year after year.  No asthma, no food allergies, no autism, no weird conditions.  They'll eat their junk food, no doubt.  But after a couple of days of it, like on family trips or while staying with other families, they complain that they feel weird and unwell and want some fresh food.

Kids will eat food, if they've been presented with it before.  When all they've ever had is soy product tarted up with salt, high-fructose corn syrup and added fat, that's what they think food is.  They must feel sick all the time, and think that's the normal state of being.  Sad.  But hugely profiitable for the corporate ag, food processing, medical, pharmaceutical merry-go-round of maintained dependent misery.

No kids for me, but I learned back when I was 12 or 13 that if I wanted certain food items cooked exactly the way I wanted them, I had best learn how to cook them myself.  I also know from personal experience that it is often best to not kill an animal and eat that same kind of animal on the same day.  Fish, not so much, but with elk, there is a particular smell that gets into your nose, and it takes ~24 hours to "reset."  Have a meal of elk that somebody brought on an elk hunt, and it'll eventually get to me.  I feel that knowing that is having a connection to my food.  Give most families a live chicken and say "here is dinner," and many won't eat that night.  It's like deep down, they probably know that the chicken that they eat probably clucked at one point in time, but they choose to believe that it grows on a tree in the back of the store.  Most people couldn't tell a weed from a bean plant, much less a musk melon vine from a watermelon vine.  Most think that they are above nature, yet we are all part of it, whether we like it or not.

I've never been a hunter, and I'm pretty squeamish so if I had to kill 'em myself, I'd probably be nearly vegetarian.  Or I'd get over it; tough to tell.

It's great to be connected to your food, and to know how to make it the way you like it.  It helps with one's sense of purpose.  It's fun, too.  I just got my mom's potato salad recipe, and I've got potatoes and hard-boiled eggs cooling right now.  I'm really looking forward to making and eating the potato salad I grew up eating, 35-40 years ago.

It's terrrible how Americans cheat ourselves when it comes to the pure pleasure of food.

Destroy the cohesive family.  Inflate the currency so that it takes two incomes to maintain a household.  Turn the education system into government daycare.

Now, the children belong to the government.  Another generation of this and the kids will eat whatever is put on their plate without complaint...just like generations before them adapted to the managed changes in society.

Those who manage society in these ways have more time, focus, and dedication than the population.  2-3 generations is about all it takes to normalize anything...gay rights is a classic example.

I like food too much to have remained unable to cook.

I cook from scratch 90% of the time and when my kids were young I used to get them to help.

My daughter is a great cook and my son is a qualified chef.

I guess I did something right!

I find I feel somehow slightly 'off' for a few hours if I eat processed crap - guess my body isn't used to it.

Never ate lunches at school. Didn't buy'em and didn't bring my own. I was poor. Couldn't afford to eat regularly most of my young life. I spent lunch breaks either sitting outside reading, sketching or sewing.

And my brain worked just fine. None of this "if kids are hungry their minds are distracted" bullshit. I was as concentrated as I needed to be. Had good marks all around. Paid more attention in math and science than any of my well-fed classmates.

Schoolboards say hunger affects concentration. I say too much food (especially the kind that comes from the government) leads to sloth.

So what's new?  Sign in the Annapolis State Legislature Page's Lounge, 1976: "Avoid the cafeteria.  The food there is sterile.  You will be too, if you eat it."

Whole-grain breads are generally delicious -- as a 10-year-old, I regularly traded the Hostess cupcakes from my lunch with the Mormon girl who had whole-wheat bread in hers.  But a school cafeteria can ruin pizza and chocolate brownies, so what COULDN'T they make inedible?  Black-market lunch economies are also a long-standing tradition as see above.

It does no harm to have the school cafeteria bound by health regulations.  A lively free market will always spring up among the students to make  up for its deficiencies.  Simply allow the kids to participate and learn about markets in this natural manner.  I have it on good authority that this is how the Iranians have been educating their businesspeople for the last three thousand years.

I'm not sure I'm getting the argument here :

- Michelle Obama wants junk food out of school cafeterias.

- School cafeterias serve bad food (arguably, although judging it from a picture is pretty stupid).

Therefore Michelle Obama's opinions are bad ... and ...

School cafetarias should go back to serving junk food?

Were there never a significant amount of school cafeterias which served junk food without the requirements to begin with?

Are the ones the USDA requirements unreasonable for some reason and if so how?

First of all, Michelle Obama is an ex-lawyer who gave up her right to practice due to somewhat unknown reasons after only four years. Also remember it was hinted she was a Doctor at the beginning when Obama began his run for President. Actually it was an appointed job where she made $300000 for shuffling poor unable to pay patients to other hospitals along with Valiere Jarrett and David Axlerod.

Yeah, I don't know what the hell is happening on this site lately either.  Actual thought is really not appreciated on most threads here anymore.  It's all about who can make the most scabrous partisan insult, with bonus points for racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.  Mentally lazy expresssions of anger.  Use of words to mean--well, almost anything.  It's like FreeRepublic, Townhall.com, the worse parts of HuffPo in terms of low level of discourse.

Leading to absurdities like people favoring our public schools' siphoning public money to crony corporate interests to feed our kids non-nutritive meals, because Michele Obama favors nutrition, like any competent Mom would.

It's sad.  This site used to reward careful reading, and really challenge the reader.  I'd come away from a well-crafted essay by, say, "Mr. Lennon Hendrix" with a list for additional reading, just so I could keep up and understand.  Now it's stuff like, "Mike Obama should cut off his dick and give it to Reggie Love!  They're fascist liberal communist gay Marxist Islams!  Oh, and NIGGER JOOO!"

The corruption goes to the core of everything these people do. You actually think she cares about the nutrition of the average american? What expertise does she bring to anything other than fleecing someone. My children go to public school, and my wife and I pack their lunches because of the crap they serve there. Any milk they receive in the lunchroom I have to pay in advance, they have an account, and have been refused milk because they fell behind fifty cents or so in said account, and we receive a phone call from the central office telling us that we "owe" money. Around here about 97% get free breakfast, free lunch, and back-packs of food sent home on the week-ends.

This is all about money, not nutrition. Please discuss that because that is the problem, as I am sure since it is being written about it is a problem all over this country.

What would it cost to replace Pilgrim Nuclear Plant with Solar PV?

First we look at the average annual energy Pilgrim has generated
Then we look at how much solar PV would be need to exceed that
Then we look at what that PV would cost
Then we look at what the cost per kWH would be to the PV owner.

Finally, how much wildlife land or agricultural land would we have to take to achieve that (the answer is zero)
