Caught On Tape - Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Explodes On Take-Off After "Anomaly"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having been picked by NASA, and funded by US taxpayers, to ship a cargo capsule to the Space Station, Elon Musk's SpaceX 9 Falcon Rocket has exploded shortly after takeoff due to what is being called an "anomaly."

Everything was going well for 20 seconds.

  • *SPACEX SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES CARGO CAPSULE TO SPACE STATION
  • *SPACEX FALCON 9 LIFTS OFF FROM CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA

Yay. Oh wait...

  • *SPACEX FALCON 9 ROCKET EXPLODES DURING FLORIDA LAUNCH
  • *SPACEX CONFIRMS `ANOMALY' DURING FALCON 9 LAUNCH
  • *SPACEX: ANOMALY HAPPENED AFTER ROCKET REACHED `MAXIMUM STRESS'

This does not look "normal"

On the bright side, the failure to take-off makes the failure to land issue null-and-void, call it bilateral nettting or something - it always works, just as AIG.

One wonders if The Fed's rate "Lift-Off" will look the same?

This is just another sign of American delusion, thinking they can run a space program without Germans. Or any other program for that matter (like F35). Everything seems to fail these days.

According to early Tesla and SpaceX investor Steve Jurvetson, Musk calculated that the raw materials for building a rocket actually were only 3 percent of the sales price of a rocket at the time. By applying vertical integration and the modular approach from software engineering, SpaceX could cut launch price by a factor of ten and still enjoy a 70 percent gross margin. Ultimately Musk ended up founding SpaceX with the long-term goal of creating a "true spacefaring civilization".

Yes, indeed, " the raw materials for building a rocket actually were only 3 percent of the sales price of a rocket".   Isn't it  geniousThe new American bankers paradism.  Just put 15 lb of horse shit together and it will fly like an eagle.

You guys can downvote away, but you are being stupid. Yes elon musk is a douche bag. But that doesn't change the fact that I am correct. Those rocket launches cost like 1/4 of what the govts former sole method of letting shit up there cost. The ULA and their Atlas V rip taxpayers off, since space x can do it that much cheaper. And yes, this one was obviously a failure, but it is so much cheaper that IT DOESNT MATTER THAT THIS ONE BLEW UP. The next one could blow up too, and even with the two failures IT WOULD STILL BE CHEAPER THAN THE OLD WAY. I live hear there, and follow this stuff, and watched this rocket blow up as well. I can tell you that space x is a step in the right direction on getting rid of the government monopoly on space travel. Even if there is a lot of cronyism on this, it still proves that private companies can do this better and cheaper than the government.

Wouldn't think ZHers would be deriding the one current alternative to govt controlled launches.

greenskeeper carl's picture

Oh no, it's not even close. My point is that SPACE X LAUNCHES ARE A HELL OF A LOT CHEAPER THAN EVERY OTHER WAY WE HAVE BEEN GETTING THINGS INTO SPACE. that is all. It's 1/4 the cost of the atlas rockets, even if one blows up. And it hopefully will open up space exploration to other private entities as well. I don't think space x has a lot of choice on where it can launch those things from. Id imagine it's cheaper to rent the space from nasa, than build an entirely new facility which is what they are doing. I don't support any govt interference in this or any other market place through crony capitalist subsidies, etc. my point is what I put in all caps above. It's a hell of a lot better than it used to be, and there aren't very many areas where we can say that.

There's another venture capitalist who's similar to Musk. John Carmack of id Software. He made his fortunes with the Doom series in the 90's. He currently works on the Oculus project. He had his own space company Armadillo Aerospace, but put it into hibernation after a few initial failures. He didn't start a car company and settled for buying a Ferrari instead. Didn't ask for a government bailout either. He plays within his means and unlike Musk he's actually intelligent - a socially awkward mathematical genius as oppose to a "smiles and handshakes" entrepreneur.

Maybe 3 failures.  Perhaps intentional so to be in the exact position they are in today.

At the moment, the chief objective of Roscosmos, and no one would disagree, is safely bringing down the last of the ISS crew, Kelly, Kornienko, and Padalka.

Leaving the $150,000,000,000 ISS without any crew and only the Russians having the  ability --  for now  --   for manned travel to and from it.

And bad feelings between Russia and the other four original builders of the space station: US, Canada, Japan and the European Partnership.

If an American Court can tell the Argentinian Treasury the order in which it should pay its debts  --  and the US State Department remain silent  --  then a Russian Court can certainly sanction the Russian Government's confiscation of the US, Canada, Japan and the European Partnership's assets in space for their wrongful sabotage of the Russian economy.

"Okay. $150,000,000,000 will cover it.  But don't do it again."

How is it that Musk is called a genius for making a terribly flawed rocket design? Because SpaceX is supposedly a private company making a garbage rocket? I'm pretty sure a lot of private corporations were involved with the military rocket program over the last 70 years.

We are talking about 1950s tech here. The Russians are still using modified R7 rockets to launch things into space.

We have how many ICBMs again? Shouldn't we just repurpose a few of the ballistic bases into satellite launch bays. Oh I forgot, the fucking tribe can't make billions off an IPO that way.

Musk drew a pod in a fucking tube and is being given the credit for a transportation design thought up by futurists in the 1800s. The man is one of the greatest frauds in history.

You think Elon may be spreading himself a little thin? For what it is worth as a rocket accelerates the aerodynamic forces beome greater, but as it gains altitude the air is thinner so the aerodynamic forces decrease for a given speed. Where these interact to provide the most aero force (sometimes called "Q") is about where this sucker blew.

After government subsidized electric car fiasco, useless and ridiculously expensive battery con, another disaster rocket toy play from apartheid boy but this time entirely for taxpayer money. Boy, he earned every badge of honor from SV technology psychedelic gurus.

Those psychotic, cash bloated, inbred retards and Wall Street perverts, in their wet Ponzi dream are fornicating with those mentally challenged Silicon Valley megalomaniacs, squirting “green” feces off their rotten minds onto faces of hard working US taxpayers, during their cerebral herpes induced seizures of sick imagination, calling it creative disruption.

We see today an example of their creative destruction, of what unemployed NASA engineers built for pittance, and created pile of trash floating in Atlantic Ocean.

I guess, unable to get hard on with sex, booze and drugs they get high of orgasmic chaos, blow up toys and inhumane exploitation of their cheerleading, gadget addicted serfs.

Interesting take on those parasites of reasonable mind I found at:
