Caught On Tape - Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Explodes On Take-Off After "Anomaly"
Having been picked by NASA, and funded by US taxpayers, to ship a cargo capsule to the Space Station, Elon Musk's SpaceX 9 Falcon Rocket has exploded shortly after takeoff due to what is being called an "anomaly."
Everything was going well for 20 seconds.

On the bright side, the failure to take-off makes the failure to land issue null-and-void, call it bilateral nettting or something - it always works, just as AIG.
One wonders if The Fed's rate "Lift-Off" will look the same?

Reusable rockets are just like reusable condoms – they blow-up at the worst possible moment. ;-)

Sign of what the markets do tomorrow.
Twenty seconds, eh? Apparently, Elon needs some of that Chinese shark fin space viagra.
In other news; Mr. Musk is looking for human volunteers for the first trial run of his Hyper-Loop...
[PS: So much for that whole "Zero Emissions" thing. Looks like Musk is one of the country's biggest polluters...]
Putin's fault.
Aaaaaannnd ..... It's gone!
Falcon NEIN!!!
This is just another sign of American delusion, thinking they can run a space program without Germans. Or any other program for that matter (like F35). Everything seems to fail these days.
"Successful" financial speculators and bankers, in present "politically correct" environment, are trying to run high-tech and space programs. The results are quite predictable.
The entire blowup of the America economic & political system will follow in not too distant future.
Is it just me, or does the white cat in Musk's avatar make him look like Ernst Stavro Blofeld?
benevolent aliens: "no escape!"
We seem to be hearing about a lot of rockets blowing up prematurely these days.
3 in the last year?
More taxpayer money down the drain. The rich says thank you.
... here's the 'anomaly' >>> SpaceX 9 Falcon Rocket ...
... and here's the hypocrisy ... while the US forced every western ally to continue sanctioning Russia, the US would allow Russian technology into the US if it benefits them ... >>> http://rt.com/usa/270220-us-space-russian-engine/
End times bitches, you are fooked!
No biggee. He'll just use some more of those massive Tesla profits to redesign it.
"He'll just use some more of those massive Tesla [subsidies] to redesign it."
There, fixed that for you...
Tesla engineers on the project too, maybe?
Maybe it collided with one of those menacing curbs that seem to be the downfall of several Tesla cars.
Tesla -- this generation's exploding Pinto
According to early Tesla and SpaceX investor Steve Jurvetson, Musk calculated that the raw materials for building a rocket actually were only 3 percent of the sales price of a rocket at the time. By applying vertical integration and the modular approach from software engineering, SpaceX could cut launch price by a factor of ten and still enjoy a 70 percent gross margin. Ultimately Musk ended up founding SpaceX with the long-term goal of creating a "true spacefaring civilization".
Yes, indeed, " the raw materials for building a rocket actually were only 3 percent of the sales price of a rocket". Isn't it genious? The new American bankers paradism. Just put 15 lb of horse shit together and it will fly like an eagle.
Send it as a question to Mythbusters: "Can you put 15 lb of horse shit together and will it fly like an eagle."
Stranger things did happen......
And how did he create vertical integration? With time honored crony capitalist methods centered around government contracts and central banking. It's easy to create profit without things like the work of finding customers, risk, and overhead that you pay for.
Interesting - the front of the rocket disintegrated first 2:33 into this video

Yup. Looks like the 2nd stage lit off before it separated from the 1st stage.

I wonder if the code said fire 2nd stage explosive bolts at 30,000 meters, ignite 2nd stage motor at 30,001 feet.
Damn software glitch! Bet it was Chinese/Russian haxors.
Don't worry, Germany is still occupied as some sort of backup.
This can be solved with some more tax subsidies for Musk.
I didn't know why I found this funny until you comment.
This can may be solved with some more tax subsidies for Musk and another $60B from NASA.
Russian space based laser took care of that fucker.
Charity is a better occupation if you suddenly became rich. Space is too difficult at this stage and it can only be run by govt.
I'm sure some fuckhead said the same thing about automobiles at the turn of the 20th Century:
Charity is all well and good. But at least some private individuals are trying to get America back into the manned space flight game. Now about those subsidies...
'Failure to Launch' is such a bitch.
But at least they can pull the Rip Chord and use the Government's Whoopi Cushion (the "Profitabilius Contractus") for a cushy landing of the company's books.
Exactly, rewarded for failure.

It appears to me that there is a vapor plume coming off just below the nose cone area (on the highside). This would be indicitave of somethine interfering with the airstream. If this indeed did happen at the point of maximum physical stress on the vehichle I wonder if something came loose (on the high side) or the whole vehichle was flexing (toward the high side) and then failed.

imagine what would happen if humans would be allowed to escape this planet? try to tyrannise or tax anyone in the vastness of space. game over for the establishment. ergo, no accident. we won't be allowed to leave the plantation, ever. doesn't mean we can't pull it off, eventually.
Escape is impossible; the bankers, politicians, priests, military/industrialists, etc will surely follow.

Hey Elon, Design a cockpit/folding wings into the reusable rocket and let a pilot land/glide onto a large floating (reusable) air mattress (or land it somewhere). Then just tie it down and tow it to shore. Get rid of the extra explosive fuels and guidance crap. Give the pilot the ability to eject. KISS
Someone should have told him it's not the 4th of July yet.
He blows so much subsidised American money, the least Americans can get is a good fireworks display.
Maybe he will start selling Tesla s two for the price of one.

The Russians lost a cargo capsule going to the space station. Now the US loses a cargo capsule going to the space station.
???
And those astronauts must be getting pretty nervous about any return flight. Not to mention hungry.
they didnt loose it .

Eloy Musk = total douchebag
Crony capitalism/fascism when govt favorite gets picked to launch rockets that blow up.
Meanwhile the Russian stuff works almost every time.
Why the fuck did he think it was a good idea to land a rocket on a floating platform.
It's the vehicular version of beer pong.
I'm not saying elon musk isn't a crony capitalist , but space x is WAY cheaper than the govt run atlas and delta rockets. Those rockets are something like 1/4 the cost of what the ULA launches the same thing for. As crazy as it sounds, the tax payer saves a ton using space x vs the other guys.
It appears to me there was NO money saved on this rocket.
He is also one of the $1 salary scamsters.
This entire thread is full of bullshiit.
The people who ridicule failure have never and will never achieve anything great.
well said.
and my thoughts entirely.
A bunch of nitwits thoughtfully commenting on the failure of something they couldn't begin to begin to understand.
You'd probably be right if the Space-X event wasn't a chapter in the struggle beteen Putin and Obama, and not a chapter in the history of rocket science.
We fully understand crony capitalism with taxpayer funds as unlimited backstop.
None of my aerospace designs blow up (and for that thousands of airline passengers are no doubt eternally grateful). Nice try, but raw venture capitalist narcissism is not an adequate substitute for actual talent.
He saved a bunch at the expense of the American tax payer.
I wouldnt be surprised if it was sabotaged
Sabotaged by owner stupidity.
You mean Larry Silverstein insured this flight?
"pull it!"
"As crazy as it sounds, the tax payer saves a ton using space x vs the other guys."
I can blow things up cheaper than Space X can...
You guys can downvote away, but you are being stupid. Yes elon musk is a douche bag. But that doesn't change the fact that I am correct. Those rocket launches cost like 1/4 of what the govts former sole method of letting shit up there cost. The ULA and their Atlas V rip taxpayers off, since space x can do it that much cheaper. And yes, this one was obviously a failure, but it is so much cheaper that IT DOESNT MATTER THAT THIS ONE BLEW UP. The next one could blow up too, and even with the two failures IT WOULD STILL BE CHEAPER THAN THE OLD WAY. I live hear there, and follow this stuff, and watched this rocket blow up as well. I can tell you that space x is a step in the right direction on getting rid of the government monopoly on space travel. Even if there is a lot of cronyism on this, it still proves that private companies can do this better and cheaper than the government.
Wouldn't think ZHers would be deriding the one current alternative to govt controlled launches.
"the one current alternative to govt controlled launches"
I don't recall SpaceX building the infrastructure at Cape Canaveral. If not 100% govt controlled and managed it's probably pretty darn close.
Oh no, it's not even close. My point is that SPACE X LAUNCHES ARE A HELL OF A LOT CHEAPER THAN EVERY OTHER WAY WE HAVE BEEN GETTING THINGS INTO SPACE. that is all. It's 1/4 the cost of the atlas rockets, even if one blows up. And it hopefully will open up space exploration to other private entities as well. I don't think space x has a lot of choice on where it can launch those things from. Id imagine it's cheaper to rent the space from nasa, than build an entirely new facility which is what they are doing. I don't support any govt interference in this or any other market place through crony capitalist subsidies, etc. my point is what I put in all caps above. It's a hell of a lot better than it used to be, and there aren't very many areas where we can say that.
The rocket may be cheap but it becomes very expensive when the payloads don't make it.
Picturing the crayon drawings made by third grade rocket scientists....
There's another venture capitalist who's similar to Musk. John Carmack of id Software. He made his fortunes with the Doom series in the 90's. He currently works on the Oculus project. He had his own space company Armadillo Aerospace, but put it into hibernation after a few initial failures. He didn't start a car company and settled for buying a Ferrari instead. Didn't ask for a government bailout either. He plays within his means and unlike Musk he's actually intelligent - a socially awkward mathematical genius as oppose to a "smiles and handshakes" entrepreneur.
funded by US taxpayers
Not to worry - Yellen can spare a few trillion of your money for more rockets after giving trillions to the banksters today.
And yet she/he can't spare $300k to write off Greece.
An old saying comes to mind: "It's not what you know, but who you know and who you blow, that counts."
Premature de-elevation
Maybe it's not as easy as they thought.
Russian heavy lift rockets are looking better and better.
This has been a very, very bad few weeks for USSA.
Not really, the last Russian one blew up too. ZH carried that article as well.
It was one of how many ?
Shit does happen when you try to fly huge bombs, but the Russians have the advantage,
of which there can be no doubt.
That's what happens when you owe people money, sharks start biting people after 2000 years of dormency.
A lot of people are really red-lining on the marriage deal, my personal least favorites recently are TPP and ACA
Unless, the Russians blew up a couple of cheap rockets over the last few months, so they could invoke their authority of what to put up to ISS and when.
In a few weeks the Russians will bring down the 3 astronauts on the ISS and the station will have no crew and Russia will be the only state to have the means of getting up there and back.
"Mr Negro, tear down this wall of 40,000 NATO troops."
Looked like there was a bomb onboard.
Yep.
Great excuse to increase funding for the TSA and Homeland Security...
They don't need to make up any more excuses, they are under fire, they increase spending for their security, simple as that.
Oops
Im sure Elon will ask for another trill. and will get approved
At least he didn't burn something up on the driveway, errrr, ummm, launchpad this time.
Was John McCain controlling this rocket?
lol...no, I don't think he's cleared to be anywhere near a flight deck these days, besides Holder & him are too busy with their gun smuggling operations anyways ;-)
That bastid needs to be on a flight deck picking up FOD. Then again, he probably cant bend over (except when hes around his ISIS buds).
It didn't blow up; it was a "correction."
I heard that Varoufakis was a last minute passenger...

having tons of money and entitled life does not make you a rocket scientist, just a jerkoff without a clue
Should've used a real Russian rocket instead.
No big problem - it's a reusable rocket. They can just re-use it and try again.
While I have no doubt the Space-X rocket is reusable, gathering up all the pieces is going to be a real bitch...
this is why we have the Southern Border immigration, those willing to do those jobs that Americans refuse to do.
When asked for further comment, Musk replied testily:
"No, the event is not a metaphor for the world economy."
What are the really doing in that space station anyway? Is it worth all this effort? Audit please.
Fuck Elon Musk - I just feel bad for the idiots who are being sucked into his narcissism.

I thought they used Russian rockets. They're usually pretty reliable.
Not those damn batteries again...
Must've flown through a cloud or something.
Putins fault.
Russian aggression.
the Neville Chamberlain to the stars.
40,000 NATO troops lining Russia's border from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
Is a Russian mole working for Space X or does Khibiny really work?
Now we know why Putin called Obama.
To tell him to get his troops off the border.
Or watch Americ'a rocket do a MH17 (without the deaths)
Software is hard bitchez!
This proves once again that rockets are hard to design and manufacture. There were, AFAIK, two Russian launch failures earlier this year, now SpaceX.
Maybe 3 failures. Perhaps intentional so to be in the exact position they are in today.
At the moment, the chief objective of Roscosmos, and no one would disagree, is safely bringing down the last of the ISS crew, Kelly, Kornienko, and Padalka.
Leaving the $150,000,000,000 ISS without any crew and only the Russians having the ability -- for now -- for manned travel to and from it.
And bad feelings between Russia and the other four original builders of the space station: US, Canada, Japan and the European Partnership.
If an American Court can tell the Argentinian Treasury the order in which it should pay its debts -- and the US State Department remain silent -- then a Russian Court can certainly sanction the Russian Government's confiscation of the US, Canada, Japan and the European Partnership's assets in space for their wrongful sabotage of the Russian economy.
"Okay. $150,000,000,000 will cover it. But don't do it again."
How is it that Musk is called a genius for making a terribly flawed rocket design? Because SpaceX is supposedly a private company making a garbage rocket? I'm pretty sure a lot of private corporations were involved with the military rocket program over the last 70 years.
We are talking about 1950s tech here. The Russians are still using modified R7 rockets to launch things into space.
We have how many ICBMs again? Shouldn't we just repurpose a few of the ballistic bases into satellite launch bays. Oh I forgot, the fucking tribe can't make billions off an IPO that way.
Musk drew a pod in a fucking tube and is being given the credit for a transportation design thought up by futurists in the 1800s. The man is one of the greatest frauds in history.
We should be working on jet launched space jets.
More than the usaf is now i mean.
Q. How do you know it is a terribly flawed design?
A. You don't.

Why do you comment upon things which you know nothing about?
Seriously?
I am not a rocket scientist but I do know about fraud people and Musk is as real as fake boobs.
He's not a genius. He's using American missile technology - blueprints - released under UN treaties. At least he's not building atom bombs. Bush, Pelosi and Harman saw that those were released too.
Be ready.
Space program went to hell after the Nazis died off. Let the Russians do this stuff. They have the know how and competence.
Can't do that -- those bastards insist on sovereignty.
Rocket has exploded shortly after takeoff due to what is being called an "anomaly."
The irony is thick with a literal "explosive anomaly" occurring leading into this particular week....
At least hes trying.
And not building Terminators for the Anglo-Zionist Banking and Warfare Empire.
Yet.
Another "success" story about the queen of corporate welfare.
Look! Fireworks!!
Pricey ones, at that!
I want a different kind of anomaly. Musk and his billionaries put all their trillions of cash in their space ship .. take off and never come back ... find a different planet.
http://just-a-thought-from-thinair.blogspot.com/
Russia will be the last bastion of Capitalism, Christianity, Clean Food, Real Women, Real Marriage, and a fucking real space program instead of this tax payer subsidized Mickey Mouse Elon Musk bullshit.
You think Elon may be spreading himself a little thin? For what it is worth as a rocket accelerates the aerodynamic forces beome greater, but as it gains altitude the air is thinner so the aerodynamic forces decrease for a given speed. Where these interact to provide the most aero force (sometimes called "Q") is about where this sucker blew.
Putin’s Worst Nightmare -
Nothing says dysfunctional national leadership like bath house lighting on the White House façade.

Fear not, I'm sure Elon got a huge government subsidy just like with his eco-guilt cars and solar panels.
When will the world finally realise that he's not "all that"? Tesla will fail. It can't produce enough cars and the battery idea is just plain stupid.
After government subsidized electric car fiasco, useless and ridiculously expensive battery con, another disaster rocket toy play from apartheid boy but this time entirely for taxpayer money. Boy, he earned every badge of honor from SV technology psychedelic gurus.
Those psychotic, cash bloated, inbred retards and Wall Street perverts, in their wet Ponzi dream are fornicating with those mentally challenged Silicon Valley megalomaniacs, squirting “green” feces off their rotten minds onto faces of hard working US taxpayers, during their cerebral herpes induced seizures of sick imagination, calling it creative disruption.
We see today an example of their creative destruction, of what unemployed NASA engineers built for pittance, and created pile of trash floating in Atlantic Ocean.
I guess, unable to get hard on with sex, booze and drugs they get high of orgasmic chaos, blow up toys and inhumane exploitation of their cheerleading, gadget addicted serfs.
