Ignoring Tsipras Plea For Calm, Greeks Storm ATMs, Stores, Gas Stations

Tyler Durden's picture

Just a few hours ago Greek PM Tsipras addressed his nation imploring then to "remain calm" and reassuring them that their "deposits were safe." It appears the Greeks did not believe him. Many were wondering where the Greek bank lines were for the past several months. Turns out the local depositors were merely waiting until just after the last minute to withdraw their funds... horde gas... and stack food. Greece, it appears is Venezuela - the new socialist paradise.

Tsipras implored: "Keep Calm...."

They did not listen...

Call that an ATM line...

Now THIS is an ATM line...

Even at the airports...

And gas stations are overwhelmed...

As grocery stores and general appliance stores come under seige...

We have seen this before - in Russia recently as the Ruble collapsed and citizens spent any and every piece of currency they had on 'assets'.

The great news for Greece is that GDP for Q2 will be sent soaring.

Simply put - it's all about inflation expectations. And unlike The Fed or The BoJ, who keep trying to jawbone higher expectations into their citizens' minds, the Greek government may have achieved it implicitly through devaluation expectations and with it - a spending spree before things get more expensive and implicitly a surge in GDP. Of course, however, the spending surge can only be short-term and will stop as soon as there are no more euros to spend.

Central bankers' self anointed omnipotence is now being questioned -- the Emperor wears no clothes.  Europeans have been living the 'free lunch' mentality and free money from the government fantasy world for way too long.  You can only print so much funny money before people lose faith in it.  The other question I'm keen to see tomorrow morning -- will the contagion spread to US Treasuries?

I always wondered why it is call "socialism" but now I get it. When socialism is working properly everyone is very social, out in the streets, standing in lines. Honestly though, it might be more accurate to call it "queuism".

This is not about socialism, it's about thieving banksters raping the population of a country.

If they get away with it in Greece, it will happen in another country soon, then another ........

Greeks are the mice in the lab as of Monday.

If they roll over for the banksters the banksters win.

This IS about socialism. This is why they borrow to cover their tax revenue shortages. Socialists actually love bankers contrary to popular socialist opinion.

The game is that banks and governments are like bartenders and drunks. The banks are the bar tenders with the booze and knowledge to make the favorite drinks. The drunk is government with a huge taxpayer checkbook and a gun.

Socialists can never tax enough and create enough bureaucracies to solve all world problems as they claim. The end game is a 100% tax rate and infinite regulations.

No it's not. It is about government elites being brought off by the bankers and corporations so the institutions of the State can be used for their benefit. That is NOT socialism. The majority of the debt since 2008 have been created by all the 'printing' to save the stealing banks which has conveniently enriched the 1%. You have no idea and will never understand how the world really works.

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 05:17 | 6248258 Klaatuwept
Klaatuwept's picture

Correct. The bought and paid for government elites have created trillions of new money to save the banks from going under as a result of all those fancy debt assets that were on their balance sheets suddenly finding their true value in 2008. That new money now sits as a huge debt on the balance sheets of the countries that created it and therefore every man woman and child in those countires. Then they and the equally bought and paid for msm make a huge effort to convince everyone its the all the fault of the unemployed, single mothers, widows and invalids who are in receipt of state benefits. Meanwhile the banks are now free to start the game again and make huge profits and, incredibly, are insisting on terrible austerity measures to be inflicted on those countries that bailed them out in the first place.

Wake up people for fuck's sake, stop all this USSA bullshit and lets try to remember who caused the problems to start with instead of swallowing the upside down narrative the elites are putting out there to distract attention from the truth.

To put a straight bat on your facetious comment, the answers are above. They have exerted control over government institutions with their wealth and influence and used the threat of being too big to fail to rob our countries and have been helped to get away with it by the tacit acceptance and swallowing of their narrative by people such as yourself. And yes, lots of people put their faith in those governments and they don't care one little bit.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the average person. Like George Carlin said: "We all know how stupid the average person is - just remember, half of them are even stupider".

This is one reason why I don't subscribe to the "everything is a false flag" meme - Never attriubute anything to malice that can be explained by stupidity.

Just because sometimes it can be both, does not mean that stupidity is not often the underlying reason. One might even posit that perhaps much apparent malice is actually a result or consequence of stupidity.

Any fucking idiot that waited until the negotiations broke down to stockpile at least a few weeks of the necessities of life doesn't deserve to get them, IMO. How stupd does someone have to be to watch this shit going on and not take precautions?

Note to americans, get your shit purchased and put away, right now, before you "need" it. People that "hoard" foodstuffs are going to be the new criminals. If you buy it well before a panic, the store restocks, and now you've not hurt the fucking idiots in life who are incapable of thinking for themselves and basically have helped the community overall since your family is one less in need of food/necessities. So you can't (or shouldn't) be considered a "hoarder". Not that it will stop Obama from trying to take your stuff and claim you are a terrorist.

"purchase an additional month of diapers"

That's the problem here. Consume or die is the message for losers in this game.

Rather the reality is consume -- and die.

You don't need a month's diapers to throw away. You can't afford that anymore and buying a month's time is worth what? Worth nothing. You need 20 cloth diapers can be washed in the toilet and dried on the line and used for a year. And after that you can use them for shop rags for another year.

And all those cars lined up for gas? Are you shitting me? Nobody will be driving to work after Wednesday, and if you are one of the lucky few who do, in another 3 weeks you won't even be able to fill up again at all because nobody with market ties to the eurozone will be selling fuel to Greece. Forget that game, it's over. Don't buy the gas, and sell your car at a loss to the first stupid fuck will buy it. Dust off your bicycle, you are working in construction or the fields now buddy everybody is.

Pull up your lawn or patio, plant vegetables. Doesn't matter if you can't grow enough to feed your family your unproductive property consumes water and effort and doesn't feed anyone, get rid of it use your water and effort growing tomatoes. Grow enough and you can trade them in the market for cash, oligarches gotta eat too.

The game is over. All the games, are over. Everything you thought was a life worth living, was really just a game or a racket, and it's over. Find another life -- something not a game but a right occupation -- and fight for that because even dogs in the streets have a life. And there is no shortage of things want to live.

I gave you a +1, but Greece''s reality is not really so bleak.  If not for interest on existing debt, Greece is close to running a budget surplus. With some modest additional budget cuts they could be sulf sufficient. Then they need only reject their debt (and renegotiate in a couple years at 10 cents on the dollar), and convert back to drachma to re-cap their banks.

BREAKING NEWS Puerto Rico’s Governor Says Island’s Debts Are ‘Not Payable’ Sunday, June 28, 2015 9:01 PM EDT Puerto Rico’s governor, saying he needs to pull the island out of a “death spiral,” has concluded that the commonwealth cannot pay its roughly $72 billion in debts, an admission that will probably have wide-reaching financial repercussions. The governor, Alejandro García Padilla, and senior members of his staff said in an interview last week that they would probably seek significant concessions from as many as all of the island’s creditors, which could include deferring some debt payments for as long as five years or extending the timetable for repayment. “The debt is not payable,” Mr. García Padilla said. “There is no other option. I would love to have an easier option. This is not politics, this is math.”

It will have to blow up at some point.... even with the corrupt system that says that some defaults are "voluntary"....  ( Like I know anyone who just gives up their investments )...   there is a point when it simply can not go on anymore....

I fear we're close and, I've been watching this for a long time....   I know how those in power just change the rules when they don't suit them.... even so... there is a point when the music stops.

I gave up trying to warn others a while back. They just dont care and I dont care if they starve. NASCAR and football are more important...until they cant sit around drinking pissy light beer and eating super-fuckin' cheddar cheetos or what-have you. It annoys them to hear the truth and it annoys me they can be so willfully stupid. I saw a quote the other day but dont recall who said it..."Ordinary people have big tv's...extraordinary people have big libraries" Look around at any of your 'friends' houses and see how many people own any books of import (if any, whatsoever). This country has become absolutely pathetic. Rock on, America!

Funny to think 30 years ago I was so pathetically clueless that I would see the end of our nation in my lifetime. Now I just wonder how I will pay for my lack of vision.

Is there a country left to save? Is it worth fighting for? Everything I see seems to tell me no. I am done manning the oars. When the producers go Galt, the parasites will fight for scraps and eventually consume themselves.

Its all I have left in me.

Was going to a relative's gay wedding reception yesterday afternoon and got a call from our dog sitter that our 14 year old, 140lb Newfoundland/ridgeback mix "Brutus" had died, so we whipped a U turn and came home. Spent the morning digging a grave on his favorite hill and burying him. Sad day for us as we have no children but rescue mutts, and losing this one was tough. I did appreciate his sacrifice in saving us from the event, but we will miss him.

It's something as simple as a dog's death to make you appreciate things you have sometimes. The Greeks will have to go it alone tonight, as I'm not carrying much sympathy.

Sorry to hear about your losses. I lost my 18yr old tabby recently so I know just how you guys feel about losing a good friend - it's not easy to express, but perhaps John Hobhouse/Lord Byron did a good job:

Written on the tomb of Boatswain, Byron's Newfoundland Dog:

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Boatswain, a Dog
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18th, 1808

We talked aobut putting it down and our 27 year old son got all upset.  We know how old the cat is by his age, he was 2 when we got her.

I moved South specifically because I could see the nation headed in this general direction.  Just didn't think things would deteriorate so quickly since the mid-2000's.  Sadly, I am not ready for any seriously adverse scenarios yet.

I look to my right at my bookshelf.  Beyond the college texts, there's a bookcase double stuffed with sci-fi/fantasy shit, a bookcase with the 'Harvard Classics' (five foot shelf of books), a Bible, a Koran, a book of Mormon, and one I haven't read 'Vedas' (saving for boredom when shit collapses).  I also have TM 31-200-1 Unconventional Warfare Devices and Techniques w references, a number of Boy Scout Manual and Handbooks, my Guidebook for Marines (circa 1978), Road to Serfdom, Economics in One Lesson...all set aside (after I read them) to subvert my grandson (currently 1.5).

I've also got a bookshelf that has every disney movie ever made, MAD magazines from late 1950's to present (no not pristine), and copies of my various software copyrights.

My wife and sons are still TV addicts.  Though the younger son does occasionally read (Harry Potter, for instance).  My wife can read and write but avoids it at every chance except at work (and compared to younger people she's Albert Einstein).  Our older son prefers to pour over milspec/drawings/plans and military bullshit than anything else..but his position as a military contractor has kept his ass in Afghanistan for the last 13 years (went back 6/27 after three weeks off.)

When my boys were young I used to do the same to them my folks did when I complained I was 'bored'.  I handed them a book, any book, never even looked at the cover.  What I didn't know was that back in the 80's schools were starting to discourage independent reading.  There was a list of books that they preferred kids to read.  My handing a random book to my sons confused them.  It wasn't approved.  And I was too dumb-assed to even think there was an approval needed.  My younger son even referred to certain books as 'Chapter Books'.  I had no idea what he was talking about until much later and, regretfully, far too late.

Who would have suspected that Webster's Dictionary was never on the list?

Never happen. You will never live to see the day. The media will spew the lie even after there is not one person left believes it, because the media belong to the oligarch .01% and they will never allow any minion under their control to say any single word out of line, ever for evar. When the land is nothing but ashes and there is only one 40" TV out there in an empty sports bar with the last bartender on the planet wiping down over and over endlessly the last bar serving nobody at all ever again, there will still be 400 channels of 24/7 infotainment and not a single syllable -- not a peep -- of truth about all those ashes or how they came to pass.

Wrap your head around that, and you will have turned an important corner.

I'm with you, Miffed!

I've been very busy lately..... Like... I've been messing around for the last 6yrs or so and, this year.... I'm actually making lists and finishing projects that were sort of done.

I have real off grid power now.... enough to run my 3 freezers..... and, I'll stop there... I'm sure I'm already on every list just for reading this site.  LOL

Seems like lately, I'm spending most of my time trying to get the stuff I've been considering for a long time finished up....   It's like I'm being prompted to do so.... whether it's by news or something else ( which is what I believe ).... I feel like it's important now and no longer a game or hobby.

It could be a quck reset.... it could be much worse....   I've come to love living outsite of town....   I work a high tech job too.... working in the cloud now.... programming an automating the orchestration layer of it and lucky enough to work wherever I want to and go in to town every now and then.... I'm seculded now... 7mi from the gas station...   when I moved out here I didn't even realize how it would to be away from things.....

when I see folks saying things like, "bring it on"... I'm sad for them....  I thought I knew something when I got way away from things and everybody.... I didn't......

One example.... do you know how dark it gets when there is NO light around?  If power were out..... you'd see every star in the sky except you'd be in town..... or, how much gas it takes to get stuff done... how you need working machines to make things happen.... without a tractor and an auger.... it'd be hard to drill a hole to crap in...... In Texas...  if you can't cool yourself off in august, you may die of heat exhaustion trying to do simple work.  It takes 3ga of gas to mow my front 4 acres....  6fa of diesel to shred my pasture...... no.... I don't hope things change.... I love a simple life away from folks..... but, these days, you're labled a terrorist to even prepare for if anything goes bad.....

I've tried to address the power situation....  we'll see... may not matter but, if the grid failed, I'm producing an average of 45kwh / day with about 830ah at 48v. of battery backup.... I'm grid tied but, when the grid fails, the other thing takes over.  LOL 36 panels and over 2k pounds of AGM batteries.

No... I hope everything will stay in tact.... I'm not counting on it but, I hope it does or... I hope that it's not as bad as I think it could be.... it's been a long time since the world has gone off it rockers and, we're overdue... the WWII generation that could at least remember it... even when war never came here understood it.....  my father  and uncle fought in WWII... they're both buried now but, I've heard some stories.... even my mother would tell me about rations and... we never saw fighting on this land.

sorry for venting.... I've got to get some sleep tonight... I have a big presentation to give tomorrow.  I have a very new presentation of something I've been working on since Jan.... to a VERY old phone company VP.

Once you have a CDO, supposedly made up of 100's of pieces of pieces of "real" property that the paper can never be easily tracked back to, the next easy step was to sell CDO, MBS backed by phantom nothing. The there's the whole issue with these things changing hands left and right but nobody ever told the county clerk or paid the transfer tax so in reality, a lot of nothing changed hands for a lot of money. Banksters committed bond fraud an poisoned their own golden egg laying goose. Now the casino is crashing.

They deserve it all.

If they actually cared about their country and knew what was happening, they would have pulled it all out and would already have made preperations to move out of the country.

No pitty here.

Come on, it actually needed to be said 1000 times that the jig is up before they started to act.

And the poor people will still be able to withdraw 80 euro’s a day. Most don’t make that per day.

I have an enormous amount of pity for the Greeks - their government exchanged debt that could be evaded for debt that could not be evaded, all so European banks could be made whole.

And how does the EU thank mom and pop in Greece - by demanding pensions be given up, taxes be raised to the point of killing the rest of the Greek economy.

It's always the little guy who suffers.
