Now a call to surrender knives, ongoing for years, is in full swing. Via Citizen Action:
The right to bear arms might be under attack here in America–but in the United Kingdom, police are trying to do something even more ridiculous: they’re attempting to ban knives.
The British police have recently joined forces with liberal grassroots activists in the UK, launching the “Save a Life–Surrender Your Knife” program. Knife crime has been climbing recently in major UK cities like London.
The program involved several weeks of “amnesty” for “pointed knives.” Civilians can turn in these apparently dangerous weapons at their local police station in exchange for “amnesty,” apparently, even though knives (rounded or pointed) aren’t illegal in the United Kingdom.
There is, however, a ban on people under 18 buying knives – going so far on the absurdity scale as to ban underage purchases of plastic knives! No joke. One woman in her 20s was even barred from buying spoons without proper ID:
Since knives are used for food preparation and many other basic and essential activities, and virtually any crude material can be transformed into a knife, even police admit the “amnesty” for turning in knives will do nothing to stop knife crimes (but it will do a great deal for instilling a mentality of helplessness while heaping on more and more rules).
Because the problem with knife crime, however, is that it’s pretty much impossible to stop just by banning knives itself. Virtually every person in the United Kingdom owns a knife–and, as long as food needs cutting, that’s not going to change.

Despite the attempt to paint knife crimes as an impulsive issue of short tempers and petty disputes, carjackings, robberies and premeditated murders are frequently committed with knives in the UK… and the system is trying to make sure victims remain defenseless.

If you feel you are in immediate danger from knife crime there are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself:
• Move away from the situation towards a public place (shop, house, restaurant etc.) as quickly as possible.
• Make as much noise as you can.
• Instead of carrying a knife, carry a personal alarm.
• Don’t fight back.
The same “logic” has of course been used in American debates on guns, with Homeland Security training even advising would-be victims at schools and offices to hide or throw cans of soup at active shooters.
It is a good enough assertion at this point to suppose that all the sharpest knives in the drawer have already been turned in or confiscated… as clearly no one in a position of authority has common sense or wits about them at all.

dateline 2025 - after banning guns, then knives, then banning anything with a handle longer than 2 inches, the British government has finally decided, after much hand-wringing by leaders, to ban hands. the wise leaders took their cue from African tribes who cut off their enemies' hands as a defensive measure against any furture violence. all surgically removed hands will be replaced by bionic instruments provided with government programming to refrain from any act of self-defense.

The last time I was threatened in Glasgow in the UK, the assailant used a flat head screwdriver which had been filed slightly to a sharpened edge. It isn't a deadly weapon, it's just a tool someone might carry. Therefore no "intent".
If you're worried about knives you need to know a little bit about how they work. Stabbing, they just punch through even multiple layers of heavy clothing though you have to commit to the stab to get through, casual or "sewing machine" stabs won't make it through heavy clothing.
Cutting or slashing, even light clothing will seriously limit damage to you from a slash and multiple layers of clothing can prevent a slashing type attack from causing damange, completely. This is why historically they wore fabric armours, they're highly effective against slashing or cutting and it's why European medieval swords evolved from choppers to thrusters. It's also why martial arts which use slashing type attacks are prevalent in hot countries and completely useless in cold ones and the "sharpie" tests are similarly useless.
The screwdriver would just punch through clothing, it's as dangerous as any knife. This is going to create a problem for the economy, Without screwdrivers, lots of jobs will become impossible.
So on guns. A 38 special with a 2" barrel has a muzzle energy of about 200 Joules. A 1/2 lb (250 gram) rock thrown at 65mph (30m/s) has about 112 Joules of energy. If you take that rock and use a sling to throw it at 90mph instead of 65, it now has about the same energy as the gun bullet; 200 Joules and it's just as devastating when it hits. Banning rocks is also a bit of a problem. There are lots of them lying around.
WTF, platic knives getting banned?! Madness right there... perhaps ban pens and pencils next, huh? Knife bans as such are idiotic since every household has a kitchen full of knives... even OTF and AO knife regulations make no sense. A speed safe Kershaw opens as fast as Microtech OTF... hell, even manual Benchmade open as fast... so what's the point in these "laws"? Have such regulations actually reduced crime rates?

This is not "News". This stupidity has been going on for quite some time where I live in the outskirts of London. "Knife Amnesty Bins" have been a regular feature infront of police stations and recyling bins for well over a decade at least. It's a fucking pain because knives and swords are a particular hobby of mine, being a member of the BFA.
When I was a boy, I remember when I could carry my 22LR rifle down the high street without a second glance for my school gun club, the only stipulation was a rifle bag. If some kid did that now, it'd be front page news with armed police turning up in APCs. Amazing how things can change in a lifetime.
Was in a gun club in UK way back in 60's.
Never seemed to worry anyone.
People have been educated to live in fear.

I recall a few decades ago UK banned POINTED knives for citizens. They had these TV spots on the Beeb with chefs showing how to carve a roast with a rounded knife end.
I may suggest that the uptick in murderous assaults and what not is linked to the darkening of UK.
